• Sure, many of us lament the end of summer and the energy of the season here in Buck Hill Falls. But when fall comes in, with her brilliant colors and crisp air, it’s a refreshing change of pace, don’t you think? This is the season for cashmere, hikes along the vibrant trails, apples, stoked-up fireplaces, and a return to “real-life” routines. Here’s to embracing fall with abandonment.

• Jillian Graff, granddaughter of Hank and Sue Walker, Dogwood Camp Cottage 54, will be a senior at Downingtown STEM Academy, where she was required to complete a Senior Graduation Project of 40 hours of volunteer service.

For her project she decided to build a little library, one filled with Jillian Graff built this little free books for kids and designed library located on the porch especially for Buck Hill—her of the Company office as favorite place. After a carpentry part of her senior project. assist from her dad, her painted, decorated (on three sides), and full-of-books little library sits on the porch of the BHF Office (with their permission). She hopes it will encourage children to find “happiness with a good book.”

• Meet Wesley, a stately (as you can see) black Labrador retriever, born on Valentine’s Day nine years ago. He lives in Upper Montclair, NJ and on Pheasant Lane with his peeps Margaret and Ed Post. Wesley loves food, especially bananas and treats, loves to swim at Red Rock, and knows where all of his tennis balls are hidden. Look for him around campus on walks with Wesley is as sweet as the day he was born—February 14.

• At the Camp Club Award Ceremony in mid-August, Chrissy Caiazzo Pritchard was honored for her twentieth anniversary as the director of Camp Club.

Kids and parents alike recognized her outstanding leadership and the impact she has had on many generations of children at Buck Hill. Thanks Chrissy, for making every summer Chrissy Caiazzo Pritchard has been Camp Club director for 20 years now. better than the last.

Caroline Salvino’s garden is a treat for the senses: visually stunning, fragrant, and peaceful. Wander the path, or sit and relax for a bit.

• If you can somehow wrangle an invitation to see Caroline Salvino’s garden at Cottage 272 on Honeysuckle Lane, take it.

For tucked into the back of her cottage, among the towering trees, is a secret garden of many charms. Over the past 12 years she has cultivated it with the help of Penny Wicks and, more recently Karen Forte, who designed wandering paths, seating areas, and beautiful plantings including peegee hydrangeas, brown-eyed Susans, impatiens, and a host of other flowers. Our own Ian Sopko built the pergola; adorned with climbing vines it’s a magical place to sit a spell and enjoy the night air or watch the clouds drift above. Naturally, it is completely fenced to keep out the deer and keep in her two standard poodles, Nelly and Pearl. The garden adds an outdoor living space to her cottage from May through October. Lovely.

• We’ve noticed some of our kids riding bikes around campus without helmets. Please, parents, make sure your children are protected. In the state of Pennsylvania children under 12 are required to wear helmets. But everyone, regardless of age, should wear one. According to the Centers for Disease Control, when used properly, “a bike helmet can help protect your child or teen from a serious brain or head injury.” For more info visit: https://www.cdc.gov/headsup/helmets/index.html

• This prehistoric-looking creature was spotted on the golf course by Ann Caggiano and Sue Ketigian. Clever girls added a golf ball to the photo for scale purposes (thank you). We suspect this reptile is a tortoise with all of that mud on his carapace.

And for those of you who don’t know, turtles are basically water babies whereas their tortoise cousins dwell on land.

• During the transition from summer to fall, mah jongg players still gather at Kerby Library on Mondays at 2pm and Fridays at 1pm. As fall digs in, play moves to Saturdays at 1pm at the Fairway Grille. In fact, there’s a devoted group who regularly Tortoises are basically shy and live on meet up at the Grille land like this guy on the golf course. for lunch and libation followed by some hotly contested games. Camp Club

I

t’s a fact—kids love camp. For eight weeks every summer, days spent in camp just might be some of the best of our kids’

Doing Good

T

he Bullfrog and Bear campers hosted a car wash to raise funds for others in need. They accepted donations of lotions, lip balm, fun pens, journals, and blankets for children who are undergoing chemotherapy at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. These donations, plus a monetary contribution, went to the LIV Foundation, which creates swag bags filled with these goodies for the children. Thanks to all who came out to support this wonderful charity. Some guest appearances from Chief Andy Andrejcisk and President of the Company Mike O’Shea made the day extra special. The campers raised over $230 for the Liv Foundation and Animal Welfare Society of Monroe.

Cake Wars

D

on’t let the name fool you— Cake Wars was a fun-filled evening of friends and sweets.

Eighteen Senior campers broke into six groups to decorate cakes based on the theme, “Buck Hill Falls.” Cakes were decorated as Red Rock, The Big Falls, The Golf Course, The Buck Hill Creek, Fly Fishing, and Paiste Pond. Parents and campers voted for their favorites. The votes were tallied. The race was close, but a winner was determined and then the cakes were devoured. The winning team received a $50 gift card to have dinner at the Fairway Grille. It was a great night that will surely turn into a teen tradition.

Labor Day weekend marks the end of the ArtPaths trail. The trail had many visitors over the summer, including some four-legged ones, and by all accounts was considered the art association’s capstone project for 2019. We could not have done the project without the consent of the Conservation Foundation and the Buck Hill Falls Company. We appreciate their support.

ummer at Buck Hill Falls comes to a close with the Foxhowe Annual Labor Day Picnic at Metzgar’s Farm, Sunday, September 1, at 6pm.

All are invited for this grand end-of-summer celebration at one of the most scenic spots in our community.

Maybe you’re not ready to let go of summer just yet? What will you miss most—the pace, vibe, and spirit, cocktails on the porch with friends, beautiful Buck Hill sunsets? Spend some time reminiscing and being entertained by our own Barrett troubadour, Joe O’Malley. It’s impossible not to sing along, and maybe even dance, when Joe is at the microphone. Anyone remember all the kids sitting around and singing with Joe last year? Such a special time. So, pack up that gourmet picnic basket and head up to Metzgar’s for our last summer hurrah!

Music In The Hills

T

he Pocono Mountains Music Festival concluded its 10th Anniversary season on August 2.

Over five nights, the festival brought more world-class artists straight to the Pocono Mountains: • Two-time Tony award nominee, Kate Baldwin, sold out the Fairway Grille with her spectacular cabaret act.

• Festival favorite and cabaret singer extraordinaire, Carole J. Bufford, brought the house down at Skytop with The Fearless Females of the 60s & 70s.

• Adults and children were wowed by the world premiere of Cirque d’Oz featuring aerialists, contortionists, members of the Flying Wallenda family and the soaring vocal performances of Chris Blem, John Boswell, Kelli Rabke, and Campbell Walker-Fields.

• The entertainment continued with Music of the Knights featuring the work of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sir Elton John, and Sir Paul McCartney with stellar vocalists

• Our final afternoon brought “hot jazz” to Pocono Mountain East High School with The Hot Sardines, straight from their world tour, performing tunes made famous by legends like Sophie Tucker and Fats Waller, accompanied not only by piano, horns, and percussion, but also rousing tap dancing.

Education once again played a big part in the festival. The Library Program, our partnership with the seven regional libraries of Monroe County, and headed by former Broadway dancer and educator, Conny Andres, engaged children with There’s No Place Like the Library: Dancing Beyond the Yellow Brick Road, encouraging reading, learning, and creative expression. The 32 students of the festival’s Performing Arts Camp spent two weeks learning from working professionals Chris Blem, John Boswell, Vebecke Dahle, and Germaine Goodson. Their exhilarating showcase: The Room Where It Happens! highlighted each student’s unique gifts.

Live Performance At The Tea

T

he Pocono Mountains Theater Company will bring a staged reading of Anne Nelson’s The Guys to the Tennis Tea in Buck Hill Falls for one night only on Saturday, September 7 at 7pm.

This is a play that honors those first responders after the September 11 attacks. It also reminds us that our strength as a civilization lies within our ability to focus on the things that bring us together, not tear us apart. – Brian Long, Artistic Director.

The festival was proud to honor David Ottaway, Ph.D, with the Richard K. Helmbrecht Award for his service on the board and steady guidance over our last ten years. In addition, we awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award to Patrick Vaccariello, former Artistic Director of the Festival and music director of over 25 Broadway shows and the Tony Awards presentation. Patrick will be music director for the upcoming revival of The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman.

None of this would be possible without our donors who are the foundation that make the festival a reality. Thank you for your support. We are thrilled to report that we reached our $20,000 goal for the Drs. David and Marina Ottaway Matching Grant. In addition, donations from Susan and Tony Roberts, and Kay and Jock Miller, in honor of our founder and president, David S. We’re looking forward to 2020 and all future seasons as we celebrate the value and importance of the arts.

Ladies’ Green and White Helenanne Lasher and Barbara Herkner served as co-chairs of this annual affair, which has always raised money for CAME (our local food bank) but had an added bonus this year. It was held in honor of former cottager Pat Consiglio who passed away last fall. Pat was a devoted golfer and played in both the 18- and 9-hole divisions and served as Secretary of the Ladies’ Golf Association at one time. She became known as one of the better “greens readers” and thus one of the better putters!

Junior Golf consisted of a weekly tournament for kids 7-15 years old each Monday from 3-3:30pm. The kids were divided in groups: 4 Hole for 7-8 year olds; 6 Hole for 9-11 year olds; and 9 Hole for 12-15 year olds. The 4-holers and 6-holers would go out with supervisors—either parents, siblings, or one of the golf staff. I want to extend a huge thanks to parents and volunteers, like John Olser. Next season, we’d love to have more adults or anyone who played in Junior Golf in

the past to help mentor and get the next generation of golfers excited about the game. We encourage kids to have their own clubs and to play a little bit of golf before jumping straight into Junior Golf. This year some of the golfers like Kaitlin Donapria, Carson Henry, Evan and Maddie Fretz, William and Mary Kate Carroccio, Owen and Elias Chun, Sophia Miller, Luke and Cole Powers, Jack and Penny Preston, and Brady Conlon played well and came out almost every Monday. In fact, each week we gave out some of “Coach Chris’ Cash” to every player who could use it to buy anything in the pro shop!

The campers first put over 200 trout, 16- to 24-inches long, into the seven trout pools between the two bridges at the golf club. The trout were golden (a rainbow hybrid), rainbow, brook, brown, and tiger (a hybrid between a brook and brown trout). Then the 18 campers were taught

the art of fly-fishing and were shown dry and wet fly selections. A lot of fish were caught and eight were cleaned for a nice trout meal. John Styk helped dam each pool before the stocking began.

t was a perfect day for the 2019 Nelson Memorial Buck Hill Falls Lawn Bowling Club (BHFLBC) Pairs Tournament on August 3. This annual tournament is in honor of Betty and George Nelson, former cottagers who loved and championed the sport of lawn bowling at Buck Hill and were active members of the club. Through the generosity of their son, Bob Nelson, the Nelson Memorial Pairs Tournament continues the legacy of his parents, their love of lawn bowling, and the continued enhancement of lawn bowling at Buck Hill.

Historic Inn Map

n 1925, in conjunction with the planning of the new main wing of the Inn at Buck Hill Falls, the Buck Hill Falls Company commissioned a monumental painting to be installed over the fireplace in the new main lobby. This main gathering area was called The Exchange.

The commission was for an elaborate three-view map, also known as a “triptych�, illustrating Buck Hill and its surroundings, with its natural features and trails in the center and the roads and communities to the west and east on either side. The map was beautifully painted and full of whimsical, charming details. The painting stretched twelve feet in length by four feet high, and it hung in The Exchange for more than 84 years.

over-painted by an artist to faithfully reproduce the original image. The cost of this process, although expensive, would be a fraction of the price of having this work fully restored by a fine art conservator.

An additional benefit of this process is that the Conservation Foundation would then have a high-resolution image that could be reproduced on a smaller scale for marketing and fundraising

purposes. Once complete, the community would be treated to a full-size reproduction that, for all intents and purposes, would appear hand-painted with all of the vibrant color and detail of the original.

In trying to find a suitable location to display the map within our community there were several considerations. The map, when commissioned, was to be the largest and most important piece of art in the new inn, and it was given the most prominent spot above the massive main fireplace of The Exchange. It seems only appropriate that the map should once again hang in the center of the community. The main meeting room of the Tennis Tea is essentially our most important public meeting space, and is arguably the center of the community. The map will be hung temporarily at the Fairway Grille and, for a period this fall, on loan for display at the Barrett Friendly Library. Over the winter the area above the Tennis Tea fireplace will be redesigned to accept the map. The map will then be moved to its place at the center of the community,

In 2012, long after the Inn had been closed, John Styk, while on patrol, noticed the map had been dislodged from above the main fireplace by vandals. Knowing the importance of the piece, John carefully removed the map and placed it in storage for safekeeping.

With thoughts toward restoration, we consulted our inhouse art experts, JR Robbins and Christopher Gaillard, who determined that the cost to fully conserve the original map, due to the high level of deterioration and its size, would be far too expensive to be justified as a reasonable investment by the Conservation Foundation. They suggested an alternative to conservation. We would hire a fine art photographer to take high-resolution digital photographs of the map. The image could be digitally corrected to reverse the damage. It would then be printed on canvas at the original twelve-foot

purchased Cottage 265 on Ledge Drive, as they needed more space to accommodate their blended family. Mike and Libby live with their combined four kids and two dogs on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Mike is a director at Baillie Gifford, an investment management partnership based in Scotland, after spending almost 20 years at BlackRock.

Libby is the Global President of Optaros, which is the ecommerce agency owned

by McCann. Daughter Olivia is heading to boarding school in the fall; she likes swimming and skiing. Michael is in the 7th grade at The Town School; he likes ice hockey, golf, and tennis. Henry is in 6th grade at The Town School; he likes football and skateboarding. Harrison is in the 5th grade at Basis Independent; he likes video games, coding, and swimming. They also have two dogs, Schnuggs and Rocky.

Judy Stillinger Judy is a old-time Buck Hiller, but is changing cottages. In her own words, here is her story.

After owning a home in Buck Hill for 36 years, I was delighted to receive a newcomer’s package from the Buck Hill Welcoming Committee. I am a newcomer because I am selling my house in the “old” community and have just purchased a golf cottage.

In the summer of 1983, my husband, Dick, and I rented a house in Buck Hill at the suggestion of Charlie Lott. Shortly after we arrived, we were told that a house with fabulous views was for sale. Out of idle curiosity we wanted to see the house; we fell in love with it and the next day put in a bid to buy. We didn’t even know if we liked Buck Hill. Well, that spontaneous, totally unplanned decision could not have been better. Together we spent 34 years here. We formed wonderful friendships and enjoyed the amenities and were in awe of the beauty of Buck Hill.

In 1998, Dick was in an accident which left him incapacitated. During the many years after that, the kindness and support we received from the community was heart-warming. Following his July 2017 death, I knew I wanted to remain in this unique community, but our house was just too big for one person. I will soon be settling into a charming golf cottage on Oak Hill, and now I am a newcomer again.

Dylan Garofalo, Sally Caswell, Janet Caswell, and Jim Reichert This new family just purchased Cottage 760 on Fawn Circle.

They got to know Buck Hill Falls through grandmother Sally Caswell, who grew up outside of Philly and spent a month each summer with her family at the Inn. Her daughter Janet came once as a two-year-old and apparently loved the “jelly girl” at the dining room. Last year, Janet and her son Dylan spent a weekend at Skytop and decided to drive over to check out Buck Hill and see the place that her mom would talk about so fondly. She didn’t expect to find much except the site of the old hotel, but once she made the turn at the stone pillars and drove through the neighborhood, she fell in love, immediately called her partner Jim, and told him she’d found the place to buy a second home!

The family is small but very close. Sally just turned 80 and lived with her husband in the DC area until his death. She moved to Greenwich, CT to be closer to her family. She’s very active and loves gardening, the pool, lectures, and just about anything that involves her grandson. She has a very bossy, but cute, Corgi named Lucy. Janet is an only child, has a son Dylan, and a golden retriever Maggie. Both love play dates. Dylan rows crew in Connecticut and is learning to play golf. Janet loves sports and played soccer at the University of Virginia where she earned an undergrad and master’s degree.

She works for a bank in NYC and has spent the last year traveling to London every two or three weeks. With such a busy work life, she hasn’t had time to play tennis and golf as much as she’d like, but she’s hoping that will soon change. Learning to lawn bowl, making new friends, and embracing all that BHF has to offer is also part of her plan.

Janet and Jim have been together for several years. Jim grew up in Cincinnati but went to grad school at Penn and settled into the NY metro area in the 90s. He has two grown children—a daughter who is hiking the Appalachian trail and a son who is a student at Northeastern. They hope to get them to Buck Hill but they are busy being in their 20s.

Jim played golf and tennis at Miami University of Ohio and also loves fly fishing.

He’s an author and is currently working on a play about his grandfather’s deep friendship with Robert Frost and a book about golfing in Scotland.

Cottager Of The Month Mary Kate Reeves-Hoche

What brought you to Buck Hill?

I followed the man I love, my husband Fred Ruben! But I also accepted a position at Sanofi Pasteur (in Swiftwater, PA), which at the time was Pasteur Merieux Connaught.

You left for a while, what made you return? I was assigned a position to oversee Medical Compliance for all of the Asia Pacific for Sanofi Pasteur. Returning to BHF was an easy decision. We have the sense that this is where we belong; we were active in many of the organizations; we have many friends here; and, it just made sense to “come home.”

You have done a lot of traveling in your various careers.

What has been your favorite destination? In my first career, I was in the Air Force as an RN and I traveled both by way of duty station transfers and because I flew Aeromedical Evacuation. One of the best aeromedical evac trips was to the Azores off Spain where we were marooned for a few days because of volcanic activity in Iceland. Since I never leave home without my bathing suit, I spent those three days on the beach.

My middle career was in academia teaching and doing research at Penn State Hershey. That job had little travel, but my sabbatical from there allowed me to complete my PhD in Physiology and Behavioral Health, which launched me into my third career as a vaccine scientist. That’s when I joined Sanofi Pasteur in 1998.

As a vaccine scientist, I traveled all over the world because we did research in different areas to research (or teach about) vaccine responses in different geographic locations. So I have been to India and Thailand, South America, and France for research purposes, and have taught in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. But my favorite place to visit is Vietnam. The people are so friendly, the culture differences from north to south are diverse, and the food is fresh.

What is your goal for the Buck Hill Art Association?

As chairperson of the art association, my goal has been to “bring the art to the people,” and to “return to our roots.”

Sixty-five years ago, the art association had people painting on the porch of the Inn. I wanted to see people taking classes and getting involved in art. Our board has a broad range of people who have helped to make that happen. We have initiated various programs: “Sketching the Seasons,” the annual children’s art project, Fireside Chats, Artist-in-Residence, Art Week with different art classes, and this year we supported the ArtPaths, a sculpture trail that incorporates art into nature. We have had very positive responses to the programs and hope to grow them over the years.

Now that you are retired, what are your favorite activities?

Since retirement in 2017, we restored our cottage, Wren House, which was a huge undertaking. Now that the cottage is done, I can spend time on my passions of art (the fusion of canvas, fabric, and paint), cooking, and being a chocolatier, and I also have time to spend with the love of my life, Fred Ruben. I am also in full volunteer mode as a Nurse Practitioner for a humanitarian group, Heart to Heart International, that does Disaster Response work.

A Woulda Coulda Shoulda-er

A

s I prepare to pack up and pack in Buck Hill Falls—yes, dear readers, Cottage 40 will be on the market this fall, thus this Diary Of is my penultimate—I have been listing in my head the upgrades I implemented over the years, like the new furnace, refinished floors, and shiny new kitchen appliances. But then, I find my mind pulled away by a giant Home-Improvement Guilt Magnet. There are so, so many projects left undone. Trusting that a potential buyer won’t read this, here are a few fix-ups I have long longed to do but just never got done.

• Forgive me, but when I bought Cottage 40, I was totally oblivious to The Great Unfinished Cottage 40. its vinyl siding. I only learned of this four or five months into ownership, when a large piece fell off the side of the house and Cottage 113’s Dan McCoubrey bravely mounted a rickety ladder to shove it back in place. There’s no two ways about it, my cottage is covered in plastic. I have long yearned to rip it down, reinsulate, and install wood over it, and have bought many a Mega Millions ticket over the years toward this end.

• The roof is at the end of its chronological, biological, and teleological life, and would have been replaced had that lottery ticket paid off. I have dithered for years over the pricey copper flashings and whether to just go with aluminum, the functional equivalent of…vinyl siding. The debate remains unsolved.

• I moved in with all sorts of ambitions to rebuild the porch in front, the deck in back, add a screened section, and get rid of the balconette in the front of the first-floor window where I am writing this now (installed for some unfathomable reason).

• Just who thought it was okay to coat the living room ceiling with high gloss paint? Repainting it has been a top priority, now five and a half years.

• It was my intent to replace the front door since I first crossed the threshold. The paint is cracked and if I twist the doorknob lock the wrong way it locks me out. Over the balconette I climb (ah, that’s why it was installed), in through the window.

• My tri-tiered backyard is the stuff of landscape renovation fantasies. I have harbored a bad case of Provençal Patioenvy since visiting the Walden/Rubin’s groovy sub-deck

grotto. I’d install string lights, couches, hanging plants, and a Nuova Simonelli Aurelia Semi-Auto Espresso Machine ($13,500). One level down, the pond leaks and another level below is perfect for an Adirondack-chair-surrounded firepit. Sadly, you can’t get thar from heah. The treacherous stone steps require a full complement of rappelling gear: carabiners, harnesses, belays, helmets, and liability waivers. Yes, I’d even make that Free Solo dude Alex Honnold sign it.

• About those “shiny new appliances.” The Verona stove is un bel forno but it takes per sempre to heat up and then, like una bellissima donna italiana, has a mind of its own. The French-door fridge’s bottom freezer door often appears closed when it isn’t, resulting in a winter wonderland of snowbound food. And my Samsung dishwasher has long been a topic of philosophical discussion between myself and other owners of this model. Why does it take three hours to complete the cycle? Why are the dishes still wet after that? Why can’t it work half as well as my New York dishwasher, a $299 Frigidaire from Home Depot? In my next life, I’m going full Kenmore.

• The second-floor landing is darker than the Black Hole of Calcutta. First, I planned to punch a hole in the wall to create a window or two. Then I learned about Velux Tubular Skylights, essentially a tunnel transporting sunlight from the roof through the attic to the second-floor ceiling. Sadly, it never happened.

• Then there’s the basement. The cottage will be sold with a set of meticulously crafted architectural drawings to reimagine the garage as a playroom, a studio, or a man cave—take your pick. Had I world enough and time, I would also have busted through the wall in the lower level bedroom creating a door into...my fantasy Provençal Patio.

Refinishing the picnic table. Installing handrails for the stairs from my driveway to the front yard. The heating system ductwork, the knob-and-tube wiring, the water that accumulates in the garage after a storm.... It seems that Cottage 40 is a regular Pocono incarnation of Sagrada Familia—which is within years of completion after 130 years of construction. Which is nothing, of course, compared to the Cologne Cathedral, 632 years in the making. You can’t rush art. Or cottages.

ne of the best things about a public library is that it offers so many opportunities for lifelong learning free of charge. Library users of all ages have access to all kinds of activities and subjects that may create passions and lead to professions. For September, our staff has scheduled a number of programs that I trust will interest you. A few are listed here, but check out our website calendar for a complete listing at www.barrettlibrary.org.

For one night each month the library will open The Library Coffee House in the Weiler Family Community Room. Come join us to listen, relax and/or Don and Dan Lane, song- perform. Come writer-guitarists-vocalists. to sing, play your instrument, recite a piece of your poetry, or read some of your prose. We need performers and they need an audience! The Library Coffee House will be hosted by Dan Lane. We plan to have four to eight performers each evening.

Rehearsals will take place in the Ottaway Family Reading Room with a mic and staging area for practice. Admittance is free as are light refreshments. Please sign up or call the library to perform; audience members are welcome to sign up or just drop in on Wednesday, September 11 from 7-9pm.

Share The Bounty

he Buck Hill Community Services Committee raised $40,000 in funds last year from within Buck Hill Falls to support various charities that directly improve the lives of our Barrett Township and Monroe County neighbors. This year, we hope to continue that community support, but are short in our efforts so far. We appreciate that many of you donate to multiple fundraising campaigns and understand we are one more group asking for a donation. Pat McCain Williams will be teaching a course on Greek tragedy by readings and discussions of Oedipus the King. The weekly class begins on September 25 in the Weiler Family Community Room at 1pm. Pat is an exceptional teacher who has been teaching Shakespeare in Barrett Paradise Friendly Library for over ten years.

Our Searchable History Project is moving along. We are interviewing for a position for a consulting archival librarian; we’ve installed a scanner and connected it through wi-fi to several computers; the software that will enable the searching capabilities was purchased. We are continuing to raise funds for the project and we’re grateful to all who have contributed to date. BHFCO Update

T

he annual meeting of shareholders of The Buck Hill Falls Co. was held on Sunday, July 28, 2019 at the Tennis Tea. Many of the topics the Board has been working on over the last year were discussed.

The Board feels it is the Company’s responsibility to properly maintain its assets for the enjoyment of the Community. The golf course is our most widely used recreational amenity. In fact, Buck Hill receives $175,000 in revenue annually from non-resident play. Forty-three percent of new cottagers in the last five years have cited golf as an important factor in their decision to make a purchase in Buck Hill. With this in mind, both the Company and Lot and Cot Boards of Directors have unanimously endorsed a plan to address deferred maintenance and to enhance the appearance and playability of the white and blue courses.

The Board will be reviewing the current rental policy this fall and potentially revisiting the rental rules. The Board is looking for comments about rentals: what community members believe the rental rules should be and how they should be enforced. The Board recognizes this is a complicated but important issue with many points of view.

As discussed at the community-wide meeting in June, nine miles of road conditions were evaluated by Borton-Lawson engineers. We hope to start resurfacing the roads in 2020.

Buck Hill is in its best financial shape in more than a decade. Reserves are up, properties are selling, we are addressing deferred maintenance, and recovering bad debts. There are several initiatives in the community that reflect our visible progress: our fitness center, the barre area in the Urice Room, The Tennis Tea Club Room, and the Pool Patio. will be the new Vice President, and James McClammy will take on the role of Treasurer. The Board also welcomes new member Jean Kofol. Other returning board members include Susan Frehse, Beth Haser, George Ketigian, Jeannine Robbins, and Steve Vosburgh.

These are the folks who will be bringing you the fall’s events starting Columbus Day weekend with Oktoberfest—a family event with beer for the grownups and cider for the kids on Saturday afternoon, October 12. Activities include scarecrow construction, bobbing for apples, bobbing for donuts (yum!), pony rides, and pumpkin decorating. Please go through your closets to find scarecrow-appropriate throwaways and drop them off at the security office behind the post office (coordinate drop off through Jess in the company office). Belts, neck ties, floppy brimmed hats, long sleeved shirts and long pants, gloves, and boots are all welcomed items.

After the helter-skelter of Thanksgiving and Black Friday shopping, Lot & Cot will host a Meet & Greet “recharging” event (as in batteries, not credit cards) at the Fairway Grille on Friday, November 29, starting at 5:30. We will also be collecting

Call Of The Wild

he Buck Hill Conservation Foundation had another very busy and productive year, as reported at the annual meeting on August 11. The foundation continues its work “preserving and protecting land in and around Buck Hill Falls” by administering several key projects. In 2019, these included: • Treatment of an additional 3,000 feet of knotweed on the Buck Hill Creek all the way downstream to the golf club. The CF Stewardship committee (and many BHF volunteers) also removed previously sprayed invasive barberry and planted 2,000 native species seedlings.

• Gaining a positive vote from BHF shareholders to endorse the land swap of core Inn properties for easements over Buck Hill Falls Company-owned land, including Metzgar’s Farm.

• Ongoing work at the Senior Lodge, which includes creating permanent office space for the foundation in the building. Other BHF not-for-profit groups have expressed interest in utilizing the space. President Emeritus, Frank May, has served as our key liaison on this project.

• The beautiful and abundant Community Garden, with all signs pointing to a bumper crop of vegetables and flowers.

In 2019, the garden expanded from 14 to 23 garden plots and, given a small waiting list, may need to expand further.

• Continuing to develop and finalize agreements on various trail systems, including Chestnut Mountain and Spruce Mountain.

The Conservation Foundation’s signature fundraising event, “A Night in the Tropics” dinner dance and auction, was attended by more than 350 guests despite torrential rains. The revelers enjoyed tropical-themed décor, a photo booth, ice cream truck, and dancing. The event was highly successful and fun for all, raising over $50,000 to support the operating expenses of the foundation. Making its debut at the dinner dance was Buck Hill Honey straight from hives at Metzgar’s Farm. The honeybee hives are a partnership with the Robbins/Reilly families.

Partnerships played an important role in the work of the foundation, showcasing the beauty of Buck Hill and continuing to expand outreach with our neighbors in Barrett and like-minded organizations in Northeast PA. Pennsylvania Land Trust Association Conference attendees, the Brodhead Watershed Association, and Pocono Lake Preserve and Nature Conservancy were just some of the organizations that participated in tours of Jenkins Woods, the falls, and the Inn property. An art installation along the Glade Trail is the result of our partnership with the Buck Hill Art Association.

Additionally, Conservation partnered with the Robbins family to restore and reproduce the historic triptych map salvaged from the Inn (see story on page 14).

Carol Klatt was awarded the 2019 Jack Dugan Award given to a cottager who demonstrates exemplary service to the natural environment. Although Carol was unable to accept the award in person (she was attending her son’s wedding in Utah), she said she was completely overwhelmed by the honor.

The Buck Hill Conservation Foundation is very proud of our achievements and stewardship of the beautiful Buck Hill legacy. With the participation and support of our Buck Hill community, we can continue to run our conservation projects and protect our area for generations to come.
