Beautiful weather on Memorial Day weekend encouraged budding artists to get out and sketch during BHAA’s Sketching the Seasons event at the East fireplace of the old Inn. Sketching the Seasons occurs quarterly in the same location so that sketchers can make four sketches capturing the four seasons. To assist the sketchers, an art mentor is on hand to offer tips and to provide tools (boards, paper, pencils, chalk). The Summer Season Sketch will be the last of the season at the fireplace on July 27 at 11am. We hope to see many budding artists join us then.

Music In The Hills

T

he Pocono Mountains Music Festival is celebrating its tenth year with a boffo lineup of music to delight kids and adults alike. Tickets are on sale now for the performances from July 24July 28. This year’s venues are Buck Hill Falls, Skytop, and Pocono Mountain East High School—so you can enjoy every one of the events truly in your own back yard!

The specific offerings are: Wednesday, July 24: Opening night is right here in Buck Hill with a spectacular cabaret performance by two-time Tony Award nominee Kate Baldwin at the Fairway Grille at 6pm or 8:30pm. Tickets are $45 for premium seating; $35 general admission. Beverages and a special dinner menu will be available.

Thursday, July 25: The festival continues with the world premiere of Cirque d’Oz. Daring acrobats, world-class musicians, and singers mix whimsy and theatrics as they follow the yellow brick road through the beloved music of The Wizard of Oz.

This performance, at 7:30pm at Pocono Mountain East High School in Swiftwater (about 15 minutes away), is one for the entire family to enjoy. Tickets are $35 Premium; $20 General Admission; $10 Students and Children under 18.

Friday, July 26: A festival favorite comes back to the Poconos. Carole J. Bufford, one of New York’s most sought-after performers will appear at the Evergreen Ballroom at Skytop with her act: The Fearless Females of the 60s & 70s. Carole puts her own spin on the music of Dusty Springfield, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, and more. Lost Inn Murals

he new main wing of the Buck Hill Inn was designed from the start to live in harmony with the beauty of its natural surroundings. Decoration was conservative, as you would expect from our Quaker forefathers, but for the decorative elements that were chosen, no cost was spared nor detail too small. This was evident in the decision to enlist the Olmstead Brothers for landscape design. Similar attention was paid to the artists and elements that were selected to decorate the new inn. We were aware of the magnificent, hand-painted wallpaper of the main dining room. The beautifully detailed wild birds and foliage painted on site, in an Asian motif, have long been a source of inspiration to those fortunate enough to recall. Lucky for us, there was more to the story.

Prior to the start of the inn demolition, I, along with John Styk and a group of volunteers, spent several months photographing the inn and searching for historical documents and elements that could be saved for the community. As we searched the upper floors of the main wing, I would sometimes find fragments of beautifully crafted wallpaper buried inside walls under layers of paint. The paper seemed to be detailed floral and nature designs done in watercolor. I was never able to salvage more than a couple tiny fragments.

One hot afternoon, John Styk and I were on the fifth floor guest room hall of the main wing, covered in mold and sweating through our respirators. I had been there countless times before, but this time I took notice of a small detail. All of the halls had the same thin chair rail molding, but as I looked down this hall, I noticed that the molding had been used to create two thin frames. The hallways were dark and the air was thick with dust and mold. On this floor, the walls were still covered with a hideous, unnatural 1980s-era floral wallpaper. It occurred to me that the frames must be there for a reason. I ran my knife around the inside of one of the frames and used the edge to peel back the wallpaper.

There it was, a beautiful mural depicting the various landscape vignettes of the early American countryside. We had revealed in two sections an art piece totaling more than eighteen feet in length and five feet in height.

I would come to learn that the artist Ilonka Karasz, who studied at the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Budapest before arriving in New York in 1913, created the mural. At the age of 17, she began her artistic career in Greenwich Village. There, she established herself as an influential practitioner of modern art and design. She gained fame for her whimsical wallpaper and her 186 published covers of The New Yorker magazine. The public was enamored of her ability to depict the simple grace and beauty in everyday Ameri-

can life through her cityscapes, townscapes, and naturescapes of the era.

On the fifth floor, we had found her mural titled “American Landscape.� This mural is a collection of six scenes: The Village, The Farmyard, The Pasture, Harvesting, The Farm Wagon, and The Train. It would appear, from my limited research, that our mural is the only known full-size copy to have survived. The Smithsonian Institute has an original miniature version in their Cooper Hewitt Collection in New York City.

In August of 2016, John Styk and our volunteers helped me remove the mural from the wall in pieces.

The trek down five flights took its toll, and by the time we were outside, the fragments numbered several dozen. We put the pieces in storage while I researched restoration methods. John introduced me to a skilled local craftsman, Dan Coolbaugh. Dan was able to re-assemble all of the fragments on a bed of plaster, creating a sturdy backing. Our own Ann Mitchell repainted all of the damaged areas, bringing this monumental landscape back to life. This remarkable mural will be on display in the Club Room at the Tennis Tea in July. e Duffers and proficients alike are showing up on the course this year and are eager to follow the new rules of golf. If you don’t know them, just stop by the Pro Shop and we’ll be happy to give you the condensed version. The rules have been streamlined to streamline the game—to pick up the pace of play and make your round more enjoyable. (For example, the time allotted to find a lost ball is now three minutes versus the former five minutes.) We’ve got instruction to get you to the top of your game (see adjacent article) and tournaments to keep your competitive edge. Our first Twilight of the season on May 24 included over 60 contestants, who covered the fairways of Buck Hill Golf Course and afterward moved on to The Fairway Grille for some excellent food and drink. Tip Of The Month: Lofted chip shots around the green: • To hit a lofted shot, use the proper club—usually a sand wedge or lob wedge is the better choice.

• Play the ball forward in your stance—just off the forward heel.

• Stance should be on the narrow side.

• Distribute slightly more weight on the forward side of your stance.

Highlights of the Memorial Day weekend were the Adult Mixer on Saturday, May 25 with competition on four courts.

Amanda Wilson emerged as the champion, Robert Woodward was runner-up, and John Rodgers finished third. On Sunday, the first Men’s Round Robin kicked off at 3pm. It was a bit dodgy in terms of weather, but we got our three rounds in as we finished playing in the rain. We also held various well-attended clinics over the weekend for both adults and juniors.

GONE FISHING

spent about two hours fishing in the beaver pond recently. Using a #16 Caddis dry fly, and a #18 Copper John wet fly, I caught and released 26 brook and brown trout ranging in size from four to 11 inches. They are beautifully active fish all born in the upper beaver pond and most of them jumped out of the water after taking the fly. Note the brilliant colors which confirm they are all born in the stream versus hatchery stocked fish which do not have such vivid colors.

• Sunday, July 14, 9am to noon—Wimbledon Brunch. The Tennis Tea is where the action takes place and the entire community is invited to participate. Enjoy some tasty bites while the Wimbledon final plays on the big television screen or watch our Woods & Whites final on Court One at 11am.

This event promises to be a great time for the entire family.

I didn’t see any beavers because it was early afternoon and they normally come out of their den between four and five o’clock. But I did see many beautiful birds: Cedar Waxwings, Red Winged Blackbirds, Purple Martins, Song Sparrows, and a Great Blue Heron.

We are developing plans for a nature boardwalk project which, if successful, will enable the Buck Hill community to have access to the Deer Lake area, including a dock leading out into the beaver pond to appreciate the full splendid nature of the site.

• Sunday, July 21, 9am—Doubles Club Championship Tournament.

Also, as a reminder to all members and their guests, the Tennis Club has a dress code for the courts: tennis shoes are a must to keep our Har-Tru courts in shape and no T-shirts, cut off shorts, bathing suits, or other non-tennis clothing are allowed. We are not an “all-white clothing” club, but we make every effort to maintain a dress code standard for all players.

ur beautiful rinks will be the site of The Northeast Division (NED) Singles Playdown on Saturday July 20, and Sunday July 21 from 8:30am4:30pm. The Playdown determines who will represent the NED at the 2019 National Bowls USA Tournament.

Lawn bowlers from throughout the NED will be participating—from New England to Southern Virginia and back out to Western Pennsylvania. Practice for the bowlers will be on Friday, July 19.

The NED is the birthplace of lawn bowls in the U.S. In Buffalo, NY in the early 1900’s, the American Lawn Bowls Association was formed and continues today as BOWLS USA with clubs from the entire U.S. This exciting Playdown is sponsored by the Buck Hill Falls Lawn Bowling Club and the Buck Hill Falls Company.

Dramatically changing almost every decade from the 1980s, the library’s collection evolved through 8-tracks, cassettes, books on CDs, and floppy discs to our 21st century formats, which include e-materials: e-books, e-magazines, e-audio books, and other online digital resources, plus our traditional print resources.

Fun Fundraiser

hether a resident Buck Hiller or a newcomer enjoying an extended July 4 weekend here in the Poconos, shuttle yourself over to the top of the Inn property for an exciting “Night in the Tropics” on Saturday, July 6. Cocktails start at 6:30pm.
