• Sweet August. Yes, it’s the last of summer, but we’ve still got a full 31 days to get in as much fun as possible before we leave this Shangri La and head back to our “other” lives. Sports, culture, dining, learning, and games are all on the agenda. So, cottagers, take advantage of this summer bounty.

• With temps in the 80s and 90s it’s hard to imagine the days when the thermometer plummets to below freezing. But you can count on it, anticipate it, and prepare for it.

• Annie Huffman lives at 105 Rhodora Lane with Susan and Richard, whom she rescued when she was just three years old.

During her early years at Buck Hill Falls, Annie developed some serious chipmunk hunting creds, but recently has moved into toy attacking, doggie yoga, and sunbathing on her deck. Annie loves the endless variety of smells at Buck Hill, which she finds far superior to the stale sidewalks of Center City Philadelphia where she lives when not in residence. While Annie finds most dogs frivolous and immature, she would love to make your acquaintance on her many Buck Hill walks.

• Dr. Susie O’Mara (wife of Tim O’Mara and daughter-in-law of Barbara Herkner) serves on the medical staff for the DC Capitals hockey team. After the team’s victory, the Stanley Cup made the rounds to all sorts of people connected with the Capitals. Included in the celebration was the medical staff who got their day with the Stanley Cup. Susie reports that drinking champagne from the Stanley Cup went way beyond a typical bucket-list experience: “Awesome!”

• The night sky of the summer solstice on June 21 this year was captured on film by Dave Mittereder who was atop the Inn site hill. For those who have forgotten the definition, the summer solstice (also known as midsummer) is the longest day of the year and occurs either on June 20, 21, or 22 depending on the time zone. Dave shot this at exactly 8:53pm.

• We were happy to welcome back Nick and Betty Sivolella for the summer.

They recently took up residence in Connecticut, but will spend most of the summer in beautiful Buck Hill where Nick plays in the Twilights and Betty joins the mah jongg and They’re back! Nick and Betty Sivolella. canasta games.

• Nine-month-old Nathaniel Hudde, grandson of Barbara and Jeff Smith, Cottage 148, proves you can never start lawn bowling too early. Nathaniel lives in California with his mom, dad and big sister but recently visited Buck Hill to spend quality time with grandpa and grandma.

• As cottagers have done for generations, Buck Hill kids head to Red Rock on the dog days of summer to cool off in the mountain stream. Natural opportunities for cooling down are plentiful here: Margaret’s Falls, Red Rock, and the lower falls’ pool.

But the human-built pool and baby pool are major attractions, too. Take your pick.

It’s an easy bike ride from their Cottage 111 to the new community garden where he attends to the family group plot—Bunny Hop. As assistant to JR Robbins, he checks the garden regularly, waters any droopy plots, and gives garden tours.

• On Saturday, July 8, eight cottagers attended the CPR class in the Urice Room, arranged by the Safety Committee of Lot and Cot. Participants learned the basics of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and use of the AED (automated external defibrillator) device. Each participant received a booklet and a certificate from the American Heart Association.

Camp Club Happenings Our campers were completely enthralled and excited by a visit with six exotic animals and reptiles on the first Friday in July. Barn Hill Preserve is a small animal preserve located in Delaware, about a four-hour drive from Buck Hill Falls. One awesome staffer from Barn Hill packed a car full of those six exotics and eagerly took a road trip to Camp Club. Our new friends include: • Simba, a five-year old tortoise from Africa: His favorite meal consists of yellow, yes, yellow flowers.

When it’s hot outside, this little guy can dig ten feet underground to hide and keep cool.

Art Association News The Buck Hill Art Association held its annual membership party at Pembroke Cottage, the home of Christopher Gaillard and JR Robbins. Over 100 members attended and enthusiastically responded to the introduction of Art Week (a week of art lessons included in membership), the house tour, and curated art at the new Club Room annex to the Tennis Tea. Be sure to stop by the Club Room throughout the summer as the art work hanging there will be ever changing and will include pieces such as the community collage created with Artist-in-Residence Aaron Krach. e are pleased to announce that three Buck Hill Art Association Scholarships have been awarded to local students:

Golf News aturally, this is the time of year when the Buck Hill course is busy with casual play and tournaments alike. Twilights (aka Nine and Dine) continue to draw large fields, the women’s 9- and 18-holers head out on Mondays and Wednesdays respectively, while the MOLs, Vultures, and Bandits play on several days each week.

W

e often measure Buck Hill Falls history by decades, even by a century. But not all history is ancient.

Such is the case with golf groups that have developed since the millennium, with the infamous Vultures at the forefront. The men’s group, 40 strong and counting, plays twice weekly.

Longtime cottager Dick Johnson spearheaded the formation of the group in 2007, beginning innocuously as the Buck Hill Golf Group, and adopting the Vultures moniker a year later.

Why Vultures? Dick explains, “Birdies and eagles are for good golfers. We’re bad golfers. Vultures seemed to fit.”

Indeed, it’s a rough and tumble bunch. Rolling out early on Mondays and Thursdays, anyone who wants to play is welcome. Play includes 18-hole games and a modest purse. Coveted points are awarded based on the order of finish and accumulate throughout the season. September features the annual Vulture Dinner, where the points leader ceremoniously is presented with—what else—the Carrion Cup! First awarded in 2011, winners have included Wendell Ehinger, Frank May, Frank Papeo, Jim Sherratt, and founder Dick Johnson himself.

The annual season-long race to the Carrion Cup has had a meaningful impact on golf at Buck Hill. Vultures play

Junior Golf • The junior golf season continues into August every Monday at 3pm for 4-, 6-, and 9-holers.

• For Camp Club, we feature our Starting New At Golf (SNAG) program. This is a fun and entertaining way for beginners to learn the game using simplified terminology and age-appropriate equipment. We even have our “sticky suit,” a Velcro outfit that juniors can attempt to hit with sticky balls, while one unlucky instructor tries to avoid being hit by those flying orbs.

• Don’t forget about the Junior Club Championship held on August 6-7 at 12pm for the 9- and 18-hole divisions and at 3pm for the 4- and 6-hole divisions.

Better yet, spinoffs from the Vultures have spawned two additional groups: the “Thank God it’s Golfing Friday” (TGIGF) group and the Bogey Bandits on Saturday. And let’s not forget the MOLS (Men of Leisure), who actually pre-date the Vultures and play on Tuesdays.

Organized groups now tee off on five of seven days, and the overlap between them results in more golf and lasting friendships among all who play. History will smile warmly on the Vultures, MOLS, and their offshoots for contributing to the spirit, camaraderie, and growth of Buck Hill golf.

n June 30, despite intense heat, more than 30 hardy players battled for top honors in our sixteenth annual Davis Cup tournament. The teams this year were USA, Poland, Mexico, and China. After many hard-fought points on the court, Team Poland emerged as the champions, with Team USA taking second place. Thanks to all of our participants.

Cool Pool he Buck Hill Falls pool is in full swing. Camp club lessons and swim team are going swimmingly. There are night swims this month, on August 10 and 30, and movie night at the pool on August 16. And don’t forget the pool grill is open daily for lunch and dinner, 11am-6pm.

Lawn Bowling Brief • The Northeast Division (NED) Bowls USA Drevitch Pairs tournament was held right here in beautiful Buck Hill Falls on June 22-24. There were amazing lawn bowling skills and strategies demonstrated with Ryan Hastu and Joe Kelly of New York City taking top honors. Our local boys—Jim Price and Rick Birchen—representing the BHFLBC performed well, too, ending up 3-2 at the close of the tournament. Thanks to volunteers: Sue Walker for coordinating the food/meals for the tournament; BHFLBC members Hank Walker, Karen Chase, Charlie Dickson, Lucy Stone, and Mayson Moore Price; and to Jim Price for his coordination with the NED. Thanks also to Mike O’Shea, Chastity Hamill, Tim Stem, and Jessica Dyer for their assistance.

Jeannine Robbins and Lot and Cot put together an amazing evening, channeling a bygone era with ice cream sundaes and floats, fifties music, badminton and other games on the lawn and, of course, night swimming. It was a beautiful night to kick off the Inn Celebration weekend.

• The NED Bowls USA Open–Singles, Doubles, and Triples, co-hosted by the Skytop Lawn Bowling Club, the BHFLBC, and the Buck Hill Falls Company, is fast approaching. O

n the night of June 30 at the Conservation Dinner Dance, a few fairies, jesters, and guests in Athenian garb (or not) gathered at the top of the hill where the old Inn once stood. Celebrating a monumental achievement to remove the Inn, participants danced the night away, bid on auction items, and enjoyed dinner provided by the Fairway Grille. The BHCF was established in 1993, and proceeds from the event will help replenish the Conservation treasury. As a special treat, new cottager Robert Woodward provided artists from his company, Peanutbutter, to help those fairies, jesters, and Greeks achieve their best personas. he Buck Hill Falls Company board of directors has not met since the last issue of The Breeze was published. The next board meeting will take place on July 29 — the same day that the annual meeting of shareholders will be held at 4pm in the Tennis Tea. Please plan to attend.

In the meantime, board members have received enthusiastic feedback on the most recent enhancements to the day-to-day experience in Buck Hill. If you haven’t already visited the new fitness center in the Paiste Pond Chalet, pick up your key fob in the Company office and head down there.

You will find a compact but extensive selection of aerobic, strength training, and stretching equipment.

room seemed to be in particularly high demand over the July 4th weekend—perhaps because it was in the mid-nineties outside and pleasantly air-conditioned inside.

Members of the Company board are grateful to those cottagers who attended one of the first two Idea Share sessions.

Intended to serve as a forum in which cottagers can express areas of concern and suggestions for improvement, the meetings have yielded several useful and constructive action items, which are already being implemented by Company management. The last of these meetings will take place on Friday, August 31 at 9:30am in Kerby Library.

The Club Room is fully furnished and ready for your visit any day from 5:30am-10pm (no overnights, please!).

• The following morning, Sunday August 6, is the annual Fishing Derby at Paiste Pond. All children are welcome and adults are encouraged to attend to untangle fishing lines and help reel in the big catch.

• Lot and Cot has adopted the pool as our summer party venue for many of our events, including a night swim plus dinner and drinks at the pool grill on Friday, August 10. Replay that One happy winner on Thursday, from the annual August 30, but add Fishing Derby. s’mores roasting around the fire pits to fight off the late August chill.

• August 16 is movie night at the pool. Depending on the weather, in-pool seating may be available.

Idea Share is a result of feedback obtained from last year’s Focus Groups conducted by Fran Durst and Adrienne Fretz of the Buck Hill Falls Company Board. One of the action items that resulted from the Focus Groups was the desire for cottagers to have more of an opportunity to share and receive information from the Buck Hill Board and Lot and Cot. In return, both Boards have a mission to remain transparent to the community. Cottager of the Month: David Toomey

A

Up Close & Personal

Buck Hill Falls visitor since 1963 and a resident since 1993, David Toomey has long been one of Buck Hill’s citoyens extraordinaires. He and his wife Ginger are avid golfers, but far beyond his participation in Buck Hill recreation, David served twelve years (count ’em, twelve!) on the Company Board, four as Chairman. David celebrates his 80th birthday this summer, so it is only fitting and proper that we highlight him and wish him the happiest of birthdays. Here is what he’s got to say: First Visit to Buck Hill: I first came to Buck Hill in October 1963 as a first-year lawyer at Duane Morris and Heckscher in Philadelphia. The firm had been holding yearly retreats since the thirties, but this was my first. Thirty lawyers stayed in two cottages—half Ginger and Dave Toomey head out in Cottage 242, for a round of golf. owned by our senior partner, Claude Smith (now owned by his grandson, Corey and wife, Jonne); the other half of us in the Colket cottage (now the Mutch cottage). It was like summer camp. In those days we couldn’t drink in Buck Hill, but we managed to sneak bottles of liquor into the Smith cottage! The re-

treats continued until 1990 by which time we had become so large that we had to stay at the Inn.

Life Outside Buck Hill: I became a partner at Duane Morris and Heckscher in 1970 and continued with the firm until my retirement in 1998.

While at the firm I chaired a department and served on the Partners’ Board. I also served a term on the board of the Philadelphia Bar Association and for many years was a board member of Community Legal Services, including four years as President. Since retirement, I have chaired a nature conservancy in Radnor, PA. Last Book Read: Fascism, a Warning by Madeleine Albright. A very thoughtful and frightening essay on today’s political climate.

Childhood Nickname: “Tucker,” dubbed when I was six. This came from a Boston College football player named Tucker Toomey, who was the best friend of my summer camp counselor.

Pet Peeve: People who invade your space when you’re having a conversation.

Favorite Thing about Buck Hill: That’s an easy one: the people. The friendliness and warmth of the residents can’t be beat.

Changes I Would Like to See at Buck Hill: I hope that the efforts to convert Buck Hill to a Home Owners Association will be revisited at the proper time and brought to fruition.

Words of Wisdom about Buck Hill: I think it’s important that we strive to maintain the cordiality that exists among people at Buck Hill. And I hope that, in the future, any resident with contrary views (and there will always be some as there are in any neighborhood) will find constructive way to work within the community to address their concerns.

New Life

B

uck Hill Falls cottages started popping up as early as 1901, shortly after the community was established. Most of the original cottages were located nearby the inn, so cottagers had an easy walk for meals or social events. After more than 100 years, our cottages are now spread all over the community, with a whole new stand of homes situated around the golf course. The beauty and challenge of buying either an old cottage or new golf cottage is to put your own stamp on it. Some people want to move into turnkey homes, but many of us love the adventure of reimagining a house to fit our modern-day needs. Such is the case of this golf cottage owned by Mary and Norm Rosenberg. Built in 1991, it was in need of a major renovation, but the new owners tackled it knowing that they could turn an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan. And so they did, as these before and after photos attest.

The house was basically sound, but Mary and Norm did more than cosmetic work. The biggest hidden improvement was the HVAC system. They removed the old baseboard heating and installed two heat pumps with new floor and ceiling ducts—a big chunk of change went into this upgrade. Other non-sexy changes include a new roof, gutters, and water heater. But, as Mary says, the cosmetic enhancements were the fun stuff that

Before & After paid the biggest dividends for her. Especially dramatic was removing a half wall and co-opting an adjacent TV room to add space for the new kitchen. That afforded more cabinets and a huge island for entertaining and prep. It also paved the way for an open-concept floor plan (key words on virtually every television renovation program). When Mary walked into the refurbished space she couldn’t believe how big and beautiful it was.

The Rosenbergs also refinished all of the floors, replaced worn and dated carpeting, removed six rooms of wallpaper, painted the entire house, and changed the cabinets, sinks, toilets, and mirrors in the bathrooms. They also trimmed some trees hanging over the cottage to welcome sunshine and light. The renovation took the Rosenbergs about a year. Well done, we say!

After bath: Simple changes reap big rewards: a new vanity, sinks, framed mirror and fresh coat of paint completely transform the bath.

Before kitchen: a cramped floor plan, plus dated cabinets, appliances, and colors screamed “help.”

Before living room: A nice space was hampered by out-of-style window treatments and a blah color palette.

After kitchen: New cabinets, appliances, and fixtures were added. Taking space from an adjacent tv room made way for a huge kitchen island.

The Inn Celebration

ot summer temperatures seemed to fire up the spectacular crowds that flocked to the three-day celebration of the Inn at Buck Hill Falls on June 29 to July 1. Years of the Inn demolition project culminated in events that brought laughter, dancing, memories, friendship, and feasting to the site that has welcomed guests to those same pleasures since 1901. The BH Conservation Foundation, Foxhowe, and the Lot and Cot Owner’s Association worked together for the commemorative days.

• Friday night was perfect for the burgers and checkered tablecloths reminiscent of the Bluestone Room in the Inn, but the actual venue was poolside—perfect for attendees who popped into the pool to cap off an evening of family fun.

• The Conservation Foundation Dinner Dance on Saturday night, with its lively Midsummer Night’s Dream theme, notched a record-setting 350+ attendees. Peanutbutter’s body-painting artists embellished revelers adorned in fairy wings, laurel garlands, and sparkling baubles, as the popular band Smooth packed the dance floor. Auction bidders snagged a New York City getaway, Buck Hill Inn memorabilia, etchings and art, a two-hour plane ride aboard a Cessna 185, and season tickets to the Pocono Mountains Music Festival. The revenue generated from the auction of these and all the other items goes for a good cause— replenishing the coffers of the Buck Hill Conservation Foundation.

• Sunday was as celebratory as it was reminiscent, as children flew their handmade kites on the site where horse-drawn carriages once brought Inn guests from the Cresco Train Station.

An 18-piece jazz orchestra, Pop-Up Museum in Senior Lodge, and Inn film documentary had hundreds of people recalling the grand days of the hotel while enjoying the beautiful setting on top of the mountain. The activities drew visitors from the greater Pocono area as well as from afar. One surprise attendee was David Jenkins Morrison, the great-grandson of Charles Jenkins, a founder of Buck Hill Falls. David came to reminisce about his family’s legacy, including his grandmother, who he says

“lived here until her death in 1975.

She died when Balloon art was part of the festivities. she was 106 years old.” Barbara Broomell Parry, whose grandmother was Anna Pettit Broomell, a pillar of Foxhowe heritage, came all the way from New Hampshire. She loved seeing her grandmother’s stories of Foxhowe in the museum’s display, and she took a front-row seat for the film documentary that aired in the tents later in the afternoon. The Inn celebration closed with a standing ovation for the documentary film that brought to life the beauty and history of the Inn at Buck Hill Falls. Rob Frehse, On Sunday, kids played on the who commissioned the film, cleared site and flew kites they thanked all of those who made themselves. made the entire Inn project possible, as the audience embraced the film that so poignantly captured the hotel’s story.

The Pop Up Museum attracted a big crowd. With enough volunteers, hopefully it will be open Sunday mornings from 10amnoon through the season.
