BRANDYWINE CONSERVANCY & MUSEUM OF ART

Dear Friends, With much anticipation and support, fiscal year 2017 will go down in history for the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art. Celebrating a special milestone— our 50th anniversary—we commemorated the year with a full slate of art exhibitions, programs, trail openings, special events, land and art acquisitions, as well as a memorable Gala weekend in April. The year also marked the 100th anniversary of Andrew Wyeth’s birth, which we honored with the opening of a landmark exhibition that brought fresh perspectives to the artist’s work and thousands of visitors in from across the country and around the globe.

While reflecting on fifty years of incredible accomplishments, we also created momentum for the future with exciting opportunities that engaged new audiences and partners.

The Brandywine River Museum of Art has long been associated with illustration, as highlighted in our extensive collection of Howard Pyle, N. C. Wyeth and other important American illustrators. With the special exhibition Get The Picture!

Contemporary Children’s Book Illustration we had an opportunity to look at the most compelling artists working for the attention of young audiences today.

It was a creative and playful exhibition presented with robust and interactive programs that attracted some of our youngest and most diverse audiences ever.

Further engaging new audiences, the Brandywine Conservancy celebrated its inaugural Bike the Brandywine event. Over 360 cyclists joined us for a perfect September day riding along the roads and trails of the Brandywine Creek Greenway. This scenic but challenging ride highlighted the beauty of the Brandywine Valley and connected riders to the land the Conservancy has protected over the decades.

The Brandywine also welcomed its first-ever Artist-in-Residence, Dylan Gauthier, who spent a year with us exploring the intersection between art and nature.

Working on projects relating to his interest in ecology and the relationship between waterways and their surrounding communities, Dylan partnered closely with the Conservancy staff to better understand the Brandywine Valley. During his residency, Dylan’s programs, projects and ultimately his immersive video beautifully brought together both halves of our organization through his artistic and contemplative works.

We were thrilled to invite friends from near and far to celebrate our anniversary Gala weekend, which included a black-tie ball and the dedication of “Founders Grove,” an inviting spot to reflect while surrounded by a stand of newlyplanted sycamore trees on the land that was the catalyst for Brandywine’s

founding. This well attended and memorable weekend which brought together old and new members of the Brandywine family raised more than $520,000.

Celebrations included the planting of the 50,000th tree in the Conservancy’s reforestation campaign and the ribbon cutting of the new Harvey Run & Studio Trails, an exciting collaboration with Chadds Ford Township. Additionally, a new trail network was also officially opened on the Brandywine campus enhanced by interpretive signs placed throughout the grounds.

Working closely with Mt. Cuba Center, The Conservation Fund and many other organizations and individuals, the Brandywine was able to help permanently protect 240 acres of open space in Concord Township, Pennsylvania. Adjacent to the 1,100-acre First State Heritage National Park, this key property will bring enormous benefits to the watershed by helping to mitigate stormwater runoff, protecting habitat for native flora and fauna and providing trails for local residents.

To help us move forward strategically in the coming years, the Brandywine was thrilled to hire three talented executives. Wade Abnett was named director of facilities, responsible for the stewardship of the buildings, and for the security of the collections and the public. Ellen S. Ferretti was named the director of the Brandywine Conservancy, overseeing its three programs—Land Conservation, Land Stewardship and Municipal Assistance. Kimberly A. Reynolds joined the Brandywine as director of development, supervising membership, corporate and foundation relations and major gifts. All of these skilled and experienced leaders have hit the ground running and already made significant contributions, including the development of a new Conservancy Strategic Plan, completing a major HVAC and fire suppression project on-time and on-budget, and closing out a stellar year of fundraising with $17 million raised.

Looking back at everything accomplished in this milestone year, we are most thankful for our donors, members, volunteers, Board of Trustees and entire staff whose generosity and dedication make our work possible every day. Both of us are honored and inspired to be working with all of you. With a solid foundation and momentum to propel us forward, we are truly excited about what the next five decades will bring.

Brandywine Heritage Society Founded in 1999, the Brandywine Heritage Society is dedicated to those very special individuals who have provided for the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art in their estate plans or planned a future gift.
