LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Dance is about possibility, imagination and heart. In this, our 50th anniversary season, Director’s Choice magnificently represents Orlando Ballet’s decades of creativity, artistry and dancing outside the box. From guest choreographer Stephanie Martinez’s “Dos Lados” and our own Heath Gill’s “Memento” to one of my personal favorites, “Deverell”, audiences will be treated to an authentically mixed repertoire that addresses some of the ways we all live in this world.
The fun of mixed rep is that these are shorter productions allowing for lots of variety in terms of dance and dance innovation. Choreographers enjoy a bit of freedom and are able to take chances here and there creating choreography and stories that are special and often unexpected. Choreographers, as well as dancers, experience some of their most creative opportunities in a mixed rep structure.
I am especially happy about this season’s Director’s Choice because we’re including the world premiere of Heath Gill’s “Memento”, an extraordinary and twisty blend of classical and modern dance founded in the power of one’s memories tied to what lies ahead in life and how to make the most of life and precious time, which is simply not to be wasted.
In Dos Lados, which translates to “both sides”, Martinez presents a gorgeous eight-member ensemble that is inspired by, and moves elegantly, to Spanish vocals and symphonic music, revealing a look at the issues of duality and our differences and similarities.
My own contribution includes “Deverell”, a personal homage to my Celtic roots. I created this lively dance in 2005 when I was still living in Canada; this production now enjoys a 20-year-old fan following. Light and magical, I lovingly describe this as my balletic version of “Riverdance”.
Thank you for choosing to join Orlando Ballet in this unique performance. Our dancers have worked hard and are eager to share these varied stories with you through their artistry, athleticism, and the love of dance they share with you.

SYNOPSIS
Inspired by the Latin phrases memento mori and memento vivere, meaning “remember you are mortal” and “remember to live”, “Memento” explores the temporary nature of life. Hauntingly elegant and energetic music from the baroque period propels a search for the beauty in endings. It is the flower, the hourglass, and the candle that provide an impermanent lens through which “Memento” ponders and remembers.
“The things that are hardest to bear are sweetest to remember.”

“Dos Lados” attempts to explore the reality that there lies duality within every story. There are at least two distinct sides of every person - the public presentation of the self and the private that holds truths that we don't dare to share.

SYNOPSIS
Deverell means “the bank of the river”, and is a ballet I created in 2005. I wanted to pay tribute to my families Celtic roots, and “Deverell” was the outcome of that creative endeavor. There is a leading lady and man that appear solo or together in several of the movements – they are the iconic and magical vision of the Celts. The ballet begins with the women who worked the fields, or the shores and boats on the coastlines. The second movement is the men, camaraderie and loyalty whether in peace or war always prevailed. The third movement is an ode to the mythical spirits and deep connection to the earth, sea and sky. The fourth movement is a pas de deux for the lead couple to the famous Welsh folk song “The Ash Grove”. The fifth movement weaves all the sections together in a true celebration of our music and dance.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
JORDEN MORRIS Artistic Director
The obvious transition for a professional ballet dancer after a performance career, is teaching and choreography. After retiring from the stage, Jorden Morris followed an academic path that included studying teaching and choreography at Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) and later dance and theatre arts at New York University. Morris focused on early French choreography and pedagogy by training with Claude Bessy and Serge Golovine at the prestigious Paris Opera, and continued his studies with Russian masters Sergei Berejnoi and Tatiana Terekhova at Boston Ballet.
Morris’ elite training steered his trajectory toward artistic leadership and choreography at the RWB where he premiered his first work – a one-act interpretation of Alexander Dumas’ The Three Musketeers.
In 1999, he joined Boston Ballet’s artistic staff and thrived working with choreographers Nach Duato, William Forsythe, Chris Wheeldon and Rudi Van Dantzig. There, he choreographed two pieces for Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Canada. Ultimately, Morris became Chief Ballet Master, lighting a route for his return to Canada as demand for his creativity grew.
From 2002 to 2013, Morris served as RWB’s associate school director and was commissioned to create his first, full-length production – the charming and whimsical, which premiered in 2006, to become the company’s best-selling production, surpassed three years later by Morris’ own Moulin Rouge® the Ballet, whose debut was so grand that performances had to be added.
Never content to work on just one thing, in 2002 Morris directed and choreographed “Head Start/ Feet First,” a collaboration between the RWB and four intercity academic schools, which transformed Canada’s popular children’s television show, he Toy Castle.” Repurposing the program as an interactive performance with a live host and interactive dance for pre-school children, Morris also starred in the series.
The RWB later premiered two other new works by Morris - The Doorway, set to the music, poetry and voice of Leonard Cohen; and MOA, a work inspired by the artist Egon Schiele.
Meanwhile, in 2013/2014, Moulin Rouge® the Ballet returned to Canada after a successful world tour before 240,000 people throughout North America and Europe, inspiring Morris to translate his live dance production into a feature film. The sweeping romance later toured through China, Europe and again in the US while Peter Pan was being performed by the RWB, Pittsburgh Ballet and Nevada Ballet Theatre.
While Morris’ creations traveled, he was serving as Artistic Director of Edmonton’s Citie Ballet where he premiered more new work, including Ophelia and Mozart 42 and Jacinto and Tierra. He also choreographed Turas and Bach to Bach. While in Edmonton, Morris held another title, that of Senior Creative Director with Canada’s Shumka Ukrainian Dance company.
In 2019, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre premiered The Great Gatsby, Morris’ new glamorous epic ballet with an original score by composer Carl Davis. Soon after, Morris came to Orlando Ballet in 2020 as Artist in Residence and where he staged his trio of grand ballets. In 2021 he became the ballet’s Artistic Director. As Orlando Ballet celebrates its 50th year, the season’s highlight will be Morris’ newest creation, a completely reimagined and newly choreographed production of The Nutcracker.

HEATH GILL Rehearsal Director
Originally from a small town in Southern Illinois, Heath Gill, spent much of his performance career at Atlanta Ballet. In his tenure with the organization, he quickly rose to performing featured and principal roles in Atlanta Ballet’s widely varied repertoire that included renowned creators such as John McFall, Jorden Morris, Christopher Wheeldon, James Kudelka, Twyla Tharp, David Bintley, Jean-Christophe Maillot, Jorma Elo, Val Caniparoli, Helen Pickett, Liam Scarlett, Jiri Kylian, Alex Eckman, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Michael Pink, and Ohad Naharin. Heath received critical acclaim for his performances and was recognized as one of ArtsATL’s “30 under 30” and Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch”.
While still performing for Atlanta Ballet, Heath had opportunities to step into leadership roles by assisting in restaging ballets and creating his first choreographic works for Atlanta Ballet’s summer company Wabi Sabi, where he also helped produce the performances in a production manager role. In 2017 Heath co-founded Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre in Atlanta Georgia. The new contemporary ballet company quickly boomed into a year-round company with a strong school. Beyond bringing his skills to the stage for the company, Gill served on the board of directors and as the company’s Production Director and Resident Choreographer. In his time at Terminus, he choreographed many full evening dance works. His production, Marley Was Dead, To Begin With was named “Best Dance Production of 2020 by ArtsATL.”
Gill received acclaim in Orlando in 2022 when his production “Confronting Genius” was performed by Orlando Ballet as part of The Premiere Collection. Following the success of his previous visit, in 2023 he was thrilled to join the artistic team at Orlando Ballet as the Rehearsal Director. In his new role, Heath brings with him his wide net of knowledge on movement including ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap, gymnastics, musical theater, and martial arts, as well as a background in music, experience in production design, and a deep understanding of the needs of a non-profit organization. Heath has a sincere love for coaching and is thrilled to be passing his skill and love of the art form on to the next generation.
