ANNUAL REVIEW 2014/2015

FAITH IN YOUNG PEOPLE

FAITH IN YOUNG PEOPLE The Boys’ Brigade continues to be a bridge into communities and through its activities thousands of children and young people, many of whom have no other connection with the church, hear the christian message each week. BB serves as a central part in the mission and outreach of the local church working in partnership with over 1400 churches of many denominations across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Following 11 years as Chief Executive and Brigade Secretary, the movement paid tribute to Steve Dickinson who at the end of July moved on to become CEO of The Global Fellowship - the international family of uniformed Christian youth organisations of which The Boys’ Brigade is a part. Starting in July 2015 Andrew Johnston was appointed Chief Executive and Brigade Secretary, having previously served as CEO of Action on Poverty. Whilst this review seeks to showcase a year in the life of the Brigade, naturally it can only provide a glimpse of the movement. As you read the following pages we hope you will agree that much is being achieved and that we have continued to deliver quality youth work to our children and young people.

GROWTH We have continued to explore ways to start new work and to grow existing Companies to provide every child or young person with the opportunity to join BB regardless of where they live.

The Brigade has continued to receive support from the Youth United Foundation and the Uniformed Youth Social Action Fund has enabled Development Workers to be employed throughout the United Kingdom. The funding is targeted at increasing provision in areas of deprivation and as well as establishing new groups, existing Companies have been supported to increase capacity.

Working in partnership with The City of Stoke-onTrent the BB provides activities for young carers on a Saturday morning along with day trips in the summer. Membership of the Company enables young carers to have time to themselves, a break from their responsibilities, to make new friends and to join in fun activities with other young carers in the City.

FACT #2

FACT #1

New work has started in all areas and as well as the traditional model of BB being the outreach of an individual church, Companies have started within ecumenical partnerships, within schools, within prisons and as a group specifically for young carers.

As part of funding targeted to support hard to reach young people, the Brigade is working in rural communities in North Wales and the Yorkshire Dales to establish work where often transport issues have resulted in young people not having access to after-school provision.

new churches have chosen BB as their partner in outreach and mission with children & young people in the local community

FACT #3

Key to growth is recruitment and retention of adult volunteers and this year 1,148 new volunteers have joined the BB.

Our learning and development strategy for leaders focuses on best practice in Youth and Children’s Work, and reflects the occupational standards for these areas of work. We continue to emphasise the importance of participation for all ages and support our trainers in this aim with targeted training materials. Investment in Captains is an ongoing and key part of our strategy with a total of 240 Captains having attended learning events. Evaluations have shown evidence of real changes occurring as a result of attending these weekends; we are

VOICE Putting our “Faith in Young People” strapline into practice, ensuring that our members’ voices are heard both inside and outside of the organisation. Launched by HRH The Prince of Wales, Step Up To Serve, is a campaign to double the number of young people involved in youth social action by 2020. Youth social action is defined as: Young people taking practical action in the service of others in order to create positive social change that is of benefit to the wider community as well as to the young person themselves. The Brigade has involved its members in serving the community since its inception and has pledged to support the #iwill campaign by increasing accessibility and promoting social action across all age groups.

So what have our young people been involved with?

FACT #6

More young people have achieved the Brigade’s top award, the Queen’s Badge, contributing over 65,000 hours of volunteering in the Brigade and wider community.

= 866 Queen’s Badges awarded

Many of our young people have been contributing to their local communities and making a real difference. We have seen examples of supporting local charities, running a food bank collection point and cleaning up local spaces to mention just a few projects. Young people from the UK joined with others from across Europe at European Fellowship’s

Easter Course held in Malta. The theme was ‘Closer To...’ and explored aspects of free speech and conflict resolution. Companies have also been involved in overseas’ ventures giving Seniors opportunities to make a real difference in communities across the globe. 16 Seniors and young leaders from across Scotland became Official Guinness World Record Holders for the longest ever game of five-a-side football during the session, after playing for 55 hours straight. Unite, a new venture organised by and for young people in England attracted 250 members to Felden Lodge in May. The event was advertised as a camp with a difference and provided a unique opportunity for young people and leaders to meet, explore their faith and enjoy a range of activities together.

Registered COMPANY / Charity The Boys’ Brigade is a Company limited by

Practically Many of our Companies need more volunteer leaders and there are groups that have to operate waiting lists. With the support of more adults, the BB experience could be offered to more children and young people. Could you help us by sharing some of your time to support a local Company? Full support and training is given to all of our volunteers. Please contact us for details of a local group. Prayerfully Each week thousands of young people come into the church environment through the activities of The Boys’ Brigade. Many have no other connection with the church. The support of prayer for leaders and members is vital in our ongoing commitment to advance Christ’s Kingdom. There are also details of specific projects that you may wish to pray for on our website. Financially The Boys’ Brigade is mainly dependent on raising finances through its membership. We do not feel that we can ask more of those that give so freely of their time week by week. With greater financial resources, the Brigade could offer more support to its Companies and expand its work to attract more young people into the life of the church. Can you help by means of a single donation or through a regular financial giving? For details of our “Friends” scheme, please contact us.
