The Education Space
In the current educational climate, where budget constraints frequently lead to school restructures and place valued staff at risk of redundancy, The Education Space offers crucial, practical support through its targeted Redeployment Training Packages. Recognising the immediate need to get affected educators back into work as quickly as possible, this training equips staff with the tools required to navigate the modern job market confidently. By providing handson workshops focused on mastering CVs and cover letters, identifying transferable skills, and navigating digital interviews, the programme ensures individuals are fully prepared for the recruitment process. Furthermore, the inclusion of dedicated, personalised coaching and

one-to-one document reviews provides genuine, tailored guidance, empowering transitioning staff to successfully adapt and secure their next role.
On 7th May 2026, The Education Space hosted a comprehensive Redeployment Training Package at Calverton Primary School. Designed to support staff through career transitions, the day was packed with practical workshops and expert-led coaching aimed at “preparing staff for the next steps in their career”.
The morning sessions focused on the fundamental “how-to” of the modern job search. Led by trainers Sarah Pluckrose, Stewart Kiddell, and Danielle Walker, delegates were organised into groups to ensure personalised attention across three core areas:
y The Paperwork: This workshop focused on mastering applications, CVs, and cover letters to ensure a great first impression on paper.
y Interview and Transferable Skills: Delegates learned how to speak the language of recruiters and identified how their current skills fit into new roles.
y Pathways and Progression: These sessions were dedicated to mapping out where staff want to go and how to actually get there.
Following the morning workshops, the entire cohort gathered for a Digital

Literacy plenary. Led by Stewart Kiddell, this group session focused on mastering online meeting tools, which are now considered essential for the modern “Teams/Zoom” era of interviewing.
The afternoon shifted from listening to doing, providing a space where “the rubber meets the road”. The Practical Interview Workshop transformed the school into a hub of professional development:
y Open Forum Document Review: Trainers provided one-on-one feedback on CVs, cover letters, and active job applications.
y The Interview Room: Working in pairs, delegates selected job descriptions and conducted mock interviews to burn off pre-interview nerves.
The Education Space remains committed to supporting our school communities through every stage of their professional journey. For more information on upcoming training opportunities, visit theeducationspace.co.uk or call 0208 249 6900, option 1
For 24 pupils from Tollgate Primary School, a recent trip to Johannesburg was far more than a visit overseas. It was a moment of discovery, connection and possibility - a nine-day experience that widened horizons, built confidence and created memories that will last a lifetime.
Tollgate Primary School, part of The Boleyn Trust, serves a community in the West Ham and Beckton Parliamentary Constituency in the London Borough of Newham. It is a community marked by significant disadvantage, where many families face real and persistent pressures. For children growing up in these circumstances, opportunities to travel internationally and experience the wider world first-hand are rare. That is what made this journey to South Africa so powerful.

Just before the Easter break, the school took 24 pupils, many of them among the most disadvantaged in the school community and including children with complex needs, on an extraordinary educational visit to Johannesburg.
Accompanied by eight members of staff, the group embarked on a trip that many could scarcely have imagined possible. Thanks to funding from the Department for Education’s Turing Scheme, that opportunity became real.
From the start, the visit was designed to do more than take pupils somewhere new. It aimed to immerse them in another culture, deepen their understanding of history and identity, and allow them to build meaningful relationships with children on the other side of the world. At the centre of the experience was Tollgate’s partnership
with Cedarwood School in Johannesburg.
Cedarwood School proved to be a remarkable host. An inclusive, coeducational remedial Preparatory School and College for children with mild to moderate support needs, Cedarwood welcomed Tollgate pupils with exceptional care, warmth and generosity. The school created a programme that was rich in culture, learning and shared experience, making every child feel valued from the moment they arrived.
Throughout their time at Cedarwood, Tollgate pupils were immersed in the sights, sounds and stories of South Africa. They took part in African drumming and marimba sessions, explored Ndebele beading, and learned greetings and language introductions in isiZulu, Afrikaans and other South African

languages. They enjoyed African folktales and an African sensory walk, discovering new traditions through hands-on experiences that brought learning vividly to life.
There were moments of joy and creativity, but also moments of reflection and real depth. At Inyamazane Farm, pupils learned about farming practices and tasted local produce. During a Gecko Biodiversity Talk, they explored ecosystems, wildlife and wetlands, gaining a direct understanding of South Africa’s natural environment. For many, this kind of learning outdoors, in a totally different landscape, was exciting in itself.
One especially memorable moment came with The Mandela Show, an interactive performance exploring the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela. For pupils who may previously have encountered his story only
in books or lessons, this was something different - immediate, human and moving. History felt real.
Cedarwood also made sure the cultural exchange was joyful. Pupils joined in traditional Boer sports, sang African calland-response songs, and took part in shared activities that brought children together not as visitors and hosts, but as friends learning alongside one another.
The final day at Cedarwood captured the spirit of the whole visit. A Heritage Assembly gave pupils the chance to reflect on what they had learned and celebrate the connection between South Africa and the UK. Cedarwood also showcased South Africa’s 11 official languages, helping Tollgate pupils appreciate the extraordinary diversity of the country.
Food, too, became part of the learning. Pupils sampled traditional South African dishes and treats including vetkoek (a traditional South African fried dough bread), melktert (a traditional South African sweet tart), koeksisters (a South African sticky donut treat), boerewors (a traditional South African sausage), and Gonimbrasia belina (Mopane Worms). For many, these were completely new tastes, and they became another way of understanding culture through experience rather than description.
One of the trip’s most memorable highlights was the Potjie Kos Competition, where mixed teams cooked together to compete for Cedarwood’s Golden Wooden Spoon Trophy. It was fun, energetic and full of laughter, but it also reflected something bigger about the visit itself - collaboration, friendship and the confidence to try something unfamiliar.
The visit closed with a Cultural Exchange Circle Around the Braai, where pupils shared what had surprised them most about South Africa and what they would tell their families when they returned home. It was a simple but powerful ending. By that point, the trip had clearly become something much bigger than a school visit. It had become a shared story.
Alongside their time at Cedarwood, Tollgate pupils also explored the wider history and reality of Johannesburg and South Africa. They went on a twohour game drive at the Bothongo Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, experiencing wildlife in a way that was thrilling and unforgettable. They visited Soweto on a full-day guided tour, including the Motsoaledi Settlement, which gave them insight into different communities and living conditions.
A visit to Vilakazi Street, home to both Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, brought them faceto-face with a place of immense historical importance. At the Nelson Mandela House Museum and the Apartheid Museum, pupils deepened their understanding of South Africa’s struggle, resilience and journey towards democracy. These were not abstract lessons. They were real places, real stories and real histories.
For Tollgate’s pupils, the impact of the visit has been profound. They returned with broader knowledge, greater independence and stronger confidence. They experienced what it means to represent their school and community with pride. They discovered that the world is bigger than they may have imagined, and that they have a place within it.
For the staff who accompanied them, the value of the trip was equally clear. Educational visits can always be memorable, but some are genuinely transformative. This was one of them. It offered pupils not just enrichment, but perspective. Not just excitement, but aspiration.
Tom Canning CBE, Chief Executive Officer of The Boleyn Trust, described the experience as “genuinely transformational” for the children involved.
Emma O’Connor, Headteacher of Tollgate Primary School, spoke of her pride in the pupils and the way they embraced every part of the visit with curiosity, courage and joy.
That sense of lasting connection may be one of the most important outcomes of all. This was not simply a visit to another country. It was the beginning of an international relationship built on shared learning, mutual respect and inclusion.
Without the Department for Education’s Turing Scheme, the trip would not have happened. For schools serving disadvantaged communities, funding of this kind can make the difference between an idea and a life-changing reality. In this case, it gave children access to an opportunity that expanded not only their knowledge, but their sense of who they are and what might be possible for their future.
For the pupils of Tollgate Primary, Johannesburg was not just a destination on a map. It was a world opened up.
