It gives me immense pleasure to introduce this wonderful collection of work. The

contributing artists have been moved to

great things, showcasing the islands and

their own unique talent in equal measure.

This tiny archipelago has inspired,

impassioned and elucidated the finest

response from all. Nature at its most

sublime has been captured; a sense of freedom made tangible, leaving the

viewer with a wistful longing, a desire to

experience the magic of the islands again.

My trip to Scilly this year coincided

with a super low spring tide revealing

sands that normally lie beneath the

sea. I was able to wander down the

channel and stand on seabed that is

not usually accessible.

Northerly winds blew over an array

of cloud formations that fleetingly

cast shadows on the white sand and

turquoise water.

These works are a spontaneous

reflection of a natural environment in

swift climatic swirl. Places that inspire

the darting movement of light, the

’’

fleeting glimpses of colour. Hence my

attraction to islands; islands in which

the congregation of sky, sea and land

manifest themselves in a heady

symphony and the lusty harmony of

blossoms awaken the senses. Tresco is one such, brooding in sanguine

revolt, imbued with mystic

associations of ancient civilisation and

thrumming with theatrical flourish. It is an historic sense of nature unfurling.

Paintings, at best, speak for

themselves. What they say depends

on what we feel when we look at

them, and if we look at them with our

hearts and souls, as well as with our

eyes. I try to paint with my heart and

soul too, which isn’t difficult when the

subject is Tresco.

Painting everyday is almost as essential

to me as eating and sleeping! In fact I

’’

find myself sleeping less these days!

Which suits me fine as I get so much

done in the early hours. I am a messy

worker, using oils to their maximum

potential, layer after layer, scraping and

adding more layers! I use pallet knives,

brushes, fingers and oil bar. This is all

done rapidly so as not to lose the

spontaneity and to capture the beautiful chaos that is our living landscape.

I have long loved Tresco Abbey

Garden ... who would not. It's a

haven of peace and quiet in this

troubled world. I was there in

November, the flowers were

blooming and the sun was shining

... a glimpse of summer in winter.

Painting on Tresco in mid March was so lovely as I experienced the whole range of weather as well as the off season calm. I decided this time to

’’

study colour predominantly - a decision inspired by my many trips to the Abbey Gardens. The Majorelle blue plays a significant role in this series of paintings and really caught my attention during my stay. The muted backdrops are often greys and darker blues, but the vivid colours are always present, even on the dullest of early spring days.
