eservedly the Silver Coast, given that name because as the sun goes down the sea becomes a dazzling, shimmering display of silver, never fails to get attention, summer or winter. During the day with miles of beautiful unspoilt (almost empty apart from the surfers and the odd fisherman) golden sandy beaches, a warm sun pouring out of the winter sky it makes you feel relaxed and at peace with the world, no hustle and bustle, just chill 24/7.

Costa de Prata deve o seu nome ao facto de quando o Sol se põe é tão brilhante que parece prata nunca passando despercebido, quer no verão ou no inverno. Durante o dia, com quilómetros de terra intocada (praticamente vazia com exceção de alguns surfistas e um ou outro pescador), praias de areia dourada um Sol morno a espreitar no céu de inverno, faz-nos sentir relaxados e em paz com o mundo.

Não há correrias, é calmo, muito calmo 24/7.

So can you cope with the difference? Are you ready for your Christmas dinner (made with fresh picked produce from the many daily farmers markets) in the garden, by the pool, or on the beach? woollies at dusk and perhaps want to sit by the fire in the evening, but of course with a tasty glass of Porto, (or two) that’s the nice bit about winter. And then there are the many delicious seafood restaurants especially in Peniche, which is a main fishing port. They make wonderful seafood stews like Cataplan or Caldeirada, you won’t find a fresher catch and great value for money.

With the year rushing by, if you want to get into the festive spirit visit Óbidos and you will see all the castle draped in beautiful fairy lights. It can be seen for miles around and you can wander along the cobbled streets with its Christmas market full of entertainment; view the individually decorated Christmas trees with festively adorned window boxes in nearly every house. There are lots of festive treats with locally produced gifts to buy. Not to mention the flurries of snow that cascade down from the roof top every 15 minutes. It’s not Disneyland but it certainly is its own special wonderland.

Aprecie as decorações das casas particulares. Há muitas coisas para poder comprar, feitas na região. E isto para não mencionar a cascada de neve que cai do cimo do telhado todos os 15minutos. Não é a Disneyland mas tem de certeza a sua magia.

Even in winter there are still loads of activities and sports you can take part in all along the coastline. Surfing here in winter is now getting worldwide attention. And for the more adventurous, there’s the thrills and excitement of kite surfing and paragliding growing rapidly in popularity. As well as the other more regular sports that can be done all year round here like canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, golf, with its world class courses, especially at Praia D’El Rey, Bom Sucesso and the new contender designed

Winter Surf Surf do inverno

W

ow! Just want to surf, any day, every day, all day!! With winter fast approaching, you would think a holiday resort on the Atlantic coast would start to quieten down and shut up shutters, ready for the winter storms that roll in off the sea to batter its shores. Well not the Silver Coast of Portugal, and especially not Baleal and Peniche. With surf breaks in three different directions, more and more people are flocking to this naturally, breathtakingly beautiful area. Every year its waves become more exciting and creative, calling out to be danced upon and surfed by enthusiastic, brave, often daring surfers. Not to say there isn’t surf for beginners because there are waves for everyone. With over 30 surf spots along a 20km strip of beach stretching the Baleal coastline alone and with many great surf schools to choose from, it’s perfectly safe for beginners as well.

Com o inverno a aproximar, ainda pensariam que um Resort de férias na costa Atlântica estaria a acalmar e a fechar estores a preparar para tempestades que se desenrolam das ondas do mar batendo violentamente na beira-mar. Bem, isso não acontece aqui no Silver Coast em Portugal, especialmente nas praias de Baleal e Peniche. Com intervalos em três direcções diferentes, mais e mais pessoas reúnam para esta natural e bela área que deixa sem folego.

Todos os anos as ondas são mais excitantes e criativos, a chamar pelos entusiasmados e corajosos surfistas que se atrevam a dançar e surfar sobre elas. Também há surf para iniciantes, pois existem ondas para todos.

Com mais de 30 sítios para surfar ao longo de uma faixa de 20 km de praia só pela costa de Baleal, com várias grandes escolas de surf por onde escolher.

Winter Surf Surf do inverno

October at Supertubos beach. It has the best barrel beach break in Europe and it is considered one of the most daring and exciting places to surf. The Meo Pro is followed by one of the most prestigious surfing events in the world. The Rip Curl World Surfing Championships in mid October, which has firmly established itself on the beaches of Supertubos and Baleal.

In fact depending on the swell the event can be held anywhere along the Baleal beach from Lagido right up to Belgas near Praia del Rey. It attracts the best surfers from every corner of the globe and many new contenders to challenge for the title. It also brings between 30-40 thousand spectators each day to watch the events and be part of all the excitement.

The Moche Music festival has even put Peniche on its music hit list. This year October has seen many famous acts, singers and DJs performing live at Supertubos beach, all to coincide with the championships. Peniche fishermen rubbing

De facto, dependendo da ondulação o evento pode tomar lugar em qualquer sítio ao longo da praia de Baleal desde o Lagido até às Belgas perto da praia Del Rey. Atraia os melhores surfistas de todos os cantos do mundo e vários novos concorrentes a lutar pelo título. Este também traz cerca de 30 a 40 espectadores todos os dias para assistir aos eventos e fazer parte da diversão.

O festival Moche Music até pôs Peniche na sua lista. Este ano, Outubro viu vários atos famosos, cantores e Dj´s ao vivo na praia de Supertubos, tudo para coincidir com os campeonatos. Pescadores de Peniche a discover 11

shoulders with the famous and elite of Portugal, times really are changing. It’s good spirits all around, everyone recognises the benefits it brings and we look forward to this part of the surf season.

socializar com os famosos de Portugal, os tempos estão mesmo a mudar. É um grande sentimento de bem-estar por todo o lado, e toda a gente reconhece os benefícios que traz e ansiamos a época de surf.

Word has it that Garrett McNamara, the 44 year old Hawaiian surfer who broke the world record last November by riding a 78ft wave in Nazaré, has now had a very special wetsuit commissioned that is equipped with an oxygen pocket. This will help save his life in the future should he ever be blessed enough to meet another epic wave here on the exhilarating coastline we call home. He doesn’t expect it to happen in his native Hawaii, he believes it will happen right here and he’s looking for a 120ft monster. He is hoping and praying that day will come soon.

So to be prepared he has military-grade swell monitoring equipment and a private jet to bring him to the Silver Coast wave, that he hopes to break his own world record on.

We think we are going to hear more from this guy real soon.

Isto ajudará a salvar lhe a vida, em caso no futuro será abençoado para conhecer outra onda épica na nossa costa que chamamos de casa. Ele não espera que isso acontecerá na sua terra nativa Havai, acredita que será aqui na nossa costa e espera encontrar-se com uma onda monstruosa de quase 40m.

Ele espera e reza que esse dia chegue.

Undeniably, Óbidos the hillside Silver Coast town is a Portuguese treasure, a national monument and a site that is genuinely unique! This gem of a town, beautiful and charming, dreamy and romantic is a place where the Renaissance met the Baroque and lived happily ever after. Its romance was sealed with a kiss in history ever since the town that time forgot, was gifted through marriage by a King to his adoring Queen.

Today, this gift is more of a magical artistic legacy.

Daí evoluí para design de interiores e planeamento de espaços. Também ensinei arte. Desde que moro aqui, tem sido ótimo para voltar à pintura pura.

A Lagoa de Óbidos, it’s never the same twice, there is always some kind of activity and the light is just spectacular. If I lived overlooking the lagoon I’d never be out of the studio!

qual é o seu local de maior inspiração na Costa de prata? É a Lagoa de Óbidos. Nunca é o igual duas vezes, há sempre algum tipo de atividade e a luz é simplesmente espetacular.

Se eu morasse com vista para a lagoa nunca sairia fora do estúdio!

What wouldn’t you do without? Space and light. o que não consegue dispensar? Espaço e luz.

Do you paint outside? Yes, sometimes.

Where else do you like to paint? I love the old parts of Caldas da Rainha, notably the park with it’s pavilhões and boating lake, and the Praça da Fruta. Ó́bidos is also a font of inspiration. onde mais gosta de pintar? Eu amo as zonas antigas das Caldas da Rainha, nomeadamente o parque com os seus pavilhões e passeios de barco no lago, e da Praça da Fruta. Óbidos é uma fonte de inspiração também. if you had a superpower what would it be? To fly.

Se tivesse um superpoder, qual desejaria? De voar.

Favourite city? It’s a toss up between Paris, San Francisco and Sydney.

here is a lovely candle shop in the Zona Industrial, Promol, Loja das Velas! It’s a little gem of a shop, right across the road from Restaurant Lisboa. What’s even better is the prices are great, every week they have special offers and candles which are slight seconds that they sell by the weight. They are one of the biggest candle manufacturers in Europe producing a whopping 1 million candles per day. Their Portuguese market is small, around 6% of what they sell globally. 70% of their market is German, but they do sell to good old M&S so that is definitely a bench mark of quality and reassurance. All their products are manufactured under the RAL quality safety standard requirements for candles and their packaging carries that labelling. The shop sells a great selection of candles for every occasion, weddings, birthdays, dinner parties, gifts or simply to have around the house. They have a pretty selection for Christmas, gold, silver, sparkly filled glass candles as well as the traditional red ones in many different shapes and sizes.

Promol are now owned by a large Swedish company ALG who are always developing new ideas. Currently they are producing their new completely natural range, which is really exciting, and many global companies are racing to put their orders in for these new products. Promol is certainly a shining light in the area.

e run a shop in Óbidos, where we sell all kinds of products that are made locally.

What better way of getting to know the region in which we live, than to go and visit the talented artists, the skilled wine makers, family jam makers, nouveau chocolatiers, experts in fused glass and families steeped in the history of making liqueurs. Then we found exceptional talents such as a self taught wood carver who has won awards in Paris for his incredible sculptures.

We have a passion for fine food and wine, we really appreciate the skills of artists and crafts people and we love to find traditional methods and knowledge. Naturally we visit all of the regional fairs, gastronomic events, shows and exhibitions. There we have the opportunity to meet the people behind the products, to taste the new flavours and to meet the artists. We visit their studios and see their work; we go to the biscuit makers and smell the freshly cooked biscuits coming out of the oven; we visit the wineries and have to undergo the obligatory tasting sessions; we have even done an olive oil tasting.

We choose the things that we like, that we can honestly say are made in a traditional manner or made with locally grown produce or by local artists; we hope that our customers appreciate our choices and will come back for more. vinhos Cortém is a young vineyard that has been slowly developed by Chris price and his wife Helga, turning what was once a hobby into a lifestyle.

Vinhos Cortém é uma vinha jovem que tem-se desenvolvido lentamente pelo Chris Price e a sua mulher Helga, tornando o que era uma vez um hobby num estilo de vida.

Why did you setup a vineyard in the Silver Coast? In 1993 Helga and I had recently met and decided to come to Portugal for a holiday. We fell in love with the area and towards the end of the holiday decided to buy a house. After a number of viewings using a local estate agent, we found this place in Cortém, which was a ruin with a fantastic view over an unspoilt valley. Helga took one look at the view and said she wanted to die here. So that was the start of our adventure.

When did you produce your first wine?

In 2006 we sold our first bottles of wine, we were still in an experimental stage learning as we went along, going to seminars, talking to people and of course with local help.

Eventually we ended up with a 5 hectares of vines planted and a fully equipped winery, and it was at this point, with all the annual

Em 1993 Helga e eu conhecemos há pouco tempo e decidimos passar férias em Portugal. Apaixonamos com a área e para o fim das férias decidimos comprar uma casa. Após visitarmos vários imóveis, utilizando um imobiliário local, encontramos este sítio em Cortém, que era uma ruína com vista sobre o vale preservado.

Helga olhou sobre esta vista e disse que era aqui onde ela queria falecer. Então foi aqui que a aventura iniciou.

Quando é que produziram o vosso primeiro vinho?

Em 2006 vendemos as nossas primeiras garrafas de vinho, ainda estávamos num período experimental a aprender pelo caminho, fomos até seminários, a falar com pessoas e claro com ajuda da localidade.

So I suppose at this point we began to figure out that making good and above all different tasting wines would be the key to our success.

When did you decide to go organic?

In 2007 we started the process of achieving the Organic certificate which takes 3 years.

This means we do not use any pesticides, herbicides or industrial fertilisers on our fields. In 2010 we received our certificate for Certified Organic Grapes.

How would you describe your wines now?

Well some of the feedback we have had from clients is that they are dry, smooth wines and have more of a French style to them, but my opinion is that our Syrah and Jaen grapes produce a light and elegant red wine and our Cabernet Sauvignon is a heavier wine to be enjoyed by itself in a big glass. We have always made our wines in the same way, fermenting in small partly open tubs with hand stirring for at least two

Quando é que decidiram tornar orgânico?

Em 2007 decidimos tornar orgânico e iniciamos o processo necessário para alcançar o certificado Orgânico, que demora 3 anos. Isto quer dizer que os nossos terrenos na levavam pesticidas, herbicidas nem fertilizantes industriais.

Como descreve os seus vinhos actualmente? O feedback que recebemos de alguns clientes é que o vinho é seco e suave, e tem mais parecença com o estilo Francês. Na minha opinião os nossos castos de Syrah e Jaen produzem um vinho tinto leve e elegante e o nosso Cabernet Sauvignon é um vinho mais pesado para ser apreciado sozinho num copo grande.

FOOD & DRINK. CoMiDa e bebiDa weeks. All sugars are fermented in the tub and the wine has time to extract tannins and colour from the skins. We only use a yeast from the champagne district and bacteria for the malolactic fermentation. In January and February of the following year we blend the wines into lots of 1500 or 2000 litres where they stay for 2 years in stainless steel tanks.

So in the end we have up to 5 different red wines each year with about 2000-3000 bottles of each wine available.

Have you won any awards for your wines?

Yes, We have won a silver medal for our Jaen 2008 at the IWC 2011 in London and a silver at the Mundus Vini 2011 and bronze at the IWC 2011 for our Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009. Our most recent award was a ‘Commended’ at the IWC 2012 with our Syrah 2009.

What was this year’s harvest like?

This year due to the strange weather we had, very dry, cold winter and late spring, it was a very late harvest and we only finished harvesting on the 26th October, where as in previous years we would have finished 3 weeks earlier. We had to wait another three weeks for the grapes to ripen. They seem to be good and we have had double the volume of wine this year at 13000 litres. Let us see how they the wines turn out. The malolactic fermantation has to take place first, there is a lot of acidity this year.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

At the moment the winery is suffering from lack of space and we really need more to function efficiently. We have an old adega that needs to be renovated and this could become our winery of the future. Also in 5 years I will be 76 and we think it is time to look for a business partner to help with investment and the future of Cortém wines.

We feel that we have built up the business to a respectable level and it is now a going concern for a young wine enthusiast looking to live in Portugal. We will certainly take part in the winemaking process in the coming years as it is still our passion!

Só utilizamos levaduras do distrito de Champagne e bactérias para a fermentação malolática. Em Janeiro e Fevereiro do ano seguinte misturamos os vinhos em lotes de 1500 a 2000 litros, onde permanecem durante 2 anos em tanques de aço inoxidáveis. No fim temos 5 vinhos tintos diferentes todos os anos com aproximadamente 2000 a 3000 garrafas de cada vinho disponíveis.

Já receberam prémios para os seus vinhos?

Como foi a vindima este ano?

Este ano dado estas grandes mudanças de tempo tivemos uma vindima muita tardia, só acabando no dia 26 de Outubro, pois noutros anos conseguíamos acabar 3 semanas antes.

Tivemos que esperar 3 semanas para que as uvas amadurecessem. Parecem estar boas e tivemos o dobro do volume este ano com 13000 litros. A fermentação malolática é o primeiro processo e este ano vimos que existe muita acidez.

Onde acham estar daqui a 5 anos?

Neste momento a nossa adega está a sofrer por falta de espaço e precisamos mesmo de mais para funcionar de modo eficiente.

Temos uma adega antiga que precisa de ser remodelada e pode vir a ser a adega do futuro. Também daqui a 5 anos eu já terei 76 anos e achamos que já está na altura de procurar um sócio para ajudar com o investimento e o futuro de Vinhos Cortém.

We have had good success in selling our wines through wine tasting sessions for groups of local ex-pats or tourists, who after enjoying our wines, the slide show and Helga’s wonderful food, always seem to buy a few bottles from us. We can ship our wines all across Europe and shipping to Portugal is free. We also have a website where clients can order online or we welcome anyone who wants to pay us a visit here at the vineyard to taste and buy wine .

roasted pork tender loin and baked potatoes with rosemary olive oil Marinate the pork for 3 to 4 hours in white wine, white port wine, garlic, ginger, bay leaf, coriander, red chilli, olive oil, salt and pepper. Begin by pan searing the loin, next finish in the oven for 20 min at 200ºC. Slice small potatoes, add salt, pepper and fresh rosemary, then cook in the oven for 40 min at 200ºC and finish with rosemary infused olive oil. lombinho do porco assado com batatas no forno com azeite de alecrim. ortugal has long been famous for Port from the Douro Valley, but did you know that it was the Silver Coast region that was the main source of Brandy for the Port houses? This was because the Silver Coast was primarily a white wine growing reqion and was even named as one of the three regions in Europe for Brandy production along with Cognac and Armagnac! Interesting, well you will find a wealth of knowledge and facts about Portuguese wine, its history, the grapes and above all learn the different tastes and flavours available from the wine touring experience at the Quinta do Sanguinhal.

Hosted by Ana Reis who is a 4th generation family member and in fact she told me ‘my grandfather planted the first vines here’ deliver a fantastic wine tasting program that costs as little as €15 per person and they are able to cater for couples to large groups and even events.

Sana Silver Coast Hotel D H aving stayed in several Silver Coast Hotels over the years, what can I tell you that is anything different or more inviting about the Sana Silver Coast Hotel in Caldas da Rainha above the other local establishments?

It’s the new boy on the block, with a restored 19th century pink Neoclassical façade and a contemporary twist on an Art Deco interior.

It is definitely working flat out, in these especially tough times in Portugal’s history, to make a five star impression, even though it’s a four star hotel. It has a perfect city location opposite one of the most beautiful parks in central Portugal, Parque Don Juan Carlos I. And there is comfy outdoor seating to have a drink, meal or snack at the Lisbonese bar and happily watch the world go by.

The staff are exceptionally helpful, friendly and attentive to your every need, nothing is too much trouble. It makes it great value for 38

urante muitos anos já fiquei em vários hotéis na Costa de Prata, por isso, o que vos que vos posso dizer que seja de diferente ou até convidativo no Sana Silver Coast Hotel de Caldas da Rainha?

É como o menino bonito do bairro, com a sua fachada do século XIX, rosa neoclássica toda restaurada e no seu interior, um toque de Art Deco. Está a funcionar muito bem mesmo com a conjuntura atual que se vive em Portugal, dando a sensação de ser 5 estrelas quando é apenas 4. Fica num local central, em frente a um dos mais bonitos parques do centro de Portugal, o parque D. Carlos I. Tem uma explanada do Lisbonense Bar, bastante confortável, onde se pode sentar para tomar uma bebida, comer um snack ou até uma refeição e relaxar vendo o resto do mundo a girar.

Os empregados, excecionalmente atenciosos a tudo o que possa precisar, nada parece ser um esforço. O preço também é convidativo, 120€ por pessoa, três noites e 12€ por uma refeição tradicional de três pratos. Isso é o valor que se paga num

money when the average three night stay works out at around 120€ per person, and only 12€ for a wonderful, traditional 3 course meal, you can nearly pay that in a certain famous hamburger restaurant these days!

Portugal has a great reputation for wines, cheeses, fish, many different styles of local fresh breads and yummy pastries. The selection here is gastronomical. Not to mention nearly every time you order a drink it comes with some sort of side order treat of nuts, popcorn and a local sweet called Cavacas, which is served with the coffee.

Many people stay in Óbidos when visiting the area, which is wonderful but often it is packed with events and tourists. The Sana is less than 10 minutes away from Óbidos, or the great beaches of Foz do Arelho, and the Óbidos Lagoon. The hotel can organise trips and sightseeing tours to one of the beautiful monasteries or churches of Alcobaça, Batalha or Fatima and the

Muitas pessoas ficam hospedadas em Óbidos, quando visitam a área, o que é maravilhoso, mas muitas vezes ficam rodeados com eventos e turistas. O Sana, fica a menos de 10 minutos de distância de Óbidos, ou das bonitas praias da Foz do Arelho e da Lagoa de Óbidos. O hotel organiza passeios e visitas guiadas às bonitas igrejas e mosteiros de Alcobaça, Batalha e de Fátima, assim como aos incríveis palácios de Sintra, já para não mencionar das inúmeras excursões de degustação de vinhos. O Hotel tem uma excelente localização para a maioria dos locais de interesse turístico.

Sana Silver Coast Hotel amazing palaces of Sintra, not to mention numerous wine tasting excursions. The Hotel really is a great central location for all the top tourists’ spots.

Then we must not forget the other local doorstep trips, which after all the wonderful food on offer, are a happy, yet necessary activity to walk off a few calories. Wander its streets and see what gives Caldas its supreme artistic and historical status among many Portuguese towns and cities. There is the wonderful Thermal Spa Hospital, one of the oldest in the world with its history of healing waters. Built back in 1485, by the then Queen Dona Leonor, after the spa waters healed a very problematic wound she had. Today the place is as busy as ever with people visiting it from all over the world.

Just up from there is the Nossa Senhora do Populo Gothic church, definitely worth a visit before venturing out into the daily fruit market, one of the oldest in Portugal, held 40

locais mesmo ao virar da esquina que, depois de toda a comida maravilhosa, são uma atividade necessária para queimas algumas calorias. Vaguear nas ruas das Caldas para conhecer os seus recantos históricos e artísticos que prestigiam esta cidade entre muitas outras cidades e vilas portuguesas.

Há o extraordinário Hospital termal, um dos mais antigos do mundo, com o seu historial de águas curativas. Construído em 1485, pela Rainha Dona Leonor, depois de as águas termais a terem curado de uma doença muito problemática que tinha. Hoje, o lugar é ocupado como nunca por pessoas que o visitam vindo de todos os cantos do mundo. Mesmo contiguo está a igreja gótica de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo, que definitivamente vale a pena fazer uma visita antes de se aventurar para o mercado diário de frutas, um dos mercados mais antigas em Portugal que se realiza todas as manhãs na Praça de Republica.

He is famous for his large cabbage patch soup tureen and another very prominent, popular, heavily glazed pottery symbol, but maybe you need to take a walk to discover the hidden treasures of Caldas da Rainha.
