Amateur radio operators step up to help fire department

During a community emergency, such as a hurricane, having all possible hands on deck can make a difference in how smoothly operations can proceed to keep citizens as safe as possible. The sharing of information is critical.

The Sun City Amateur Radio Club (SCARC) is one civilian group that has offered its expertise and experience to assist in that effort.

In an emergency, “We need to get the right information to the right people in a timely fashion,” said Dan McLaughlin of the SCARC. Thanks to a recent collaboration, club members will be available to assist Bluffton Township Fire District (BTFD) with communications via the radio network.

McLaughlin said the fire department approached the club several years ago.

“The chief at the time wondered if he could find money for amateur radios (sometimes called ‘ham radios’) for all the BTFD fire stations,” he said. “The fire chief felt they needed to equip all the stations to provide redundancy in case of a failure in the communication systems during an emergency.”

According to Capt. Randy Hunter, public information officer for BTFD, the department has had ham radios at all fire

stations and in all the emergency vehicles ever since.

The brand new BTFD Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is now open and ready for use. The new facility, situated just off of Bluffton Parkway adjacent to River Ridge Academy, will be used as the BTFD command center for large-scale emergencies, like hurricanes and earthquakes. (Yes, earthquakes can, and do, happen here.)

At the heart of this state-of-the-art facility is a large room lined with wall-hung monitors, and desks with computers. In that room, SCARC has a fully equipped work station.

Beaufort County Council approved the construction of the new fire house, No. 38, and the EOC in the spring of 2019.

The buildings, which are adjacent to each other, were completed during the COVID pandemic.

McLaughlin is enthusiastic about the new EOC and the collaborative effort between the SCARC and the BTFD. “We have forward thinking leaders who have done amazing planning,” he said. “If there is an emergency, and if the amateur radio system needs to be activated, we will be able to maintain communication with each of the fire stations in the BTFD. We just had an emergency test on May 26,

Capt. Brian Cleland, the BTFD EOC communications manager, has been with the department for 29 years. When asked what it is like to work with the Sun City amateur radio operators, Cleland said, “It’s great! Their experience and expertise with ham radios is invaluable.”

McLaughlin is the chair of the public service committee for SCARC. He served in the Air Force, and then worked as a firefighter in Yuba City, Calif., before working as a police officer for the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York City. “I’m sort of like an old fire horse,” he said. “My ears perk up when there is an emergency. My life has been emergency service.”

When he moved to Sun City, McLaughlin became a licensed amateur radio operator. “Mine is a unique hobby,” he said.

“In amateur radio there are ‘contesters.’

Those are the folks who like to see how many places they can contact. I’m more into the public service aspects of it.”

How does an amateur radio work? “Ra-

dio operators connect by using a variety of different radio stations and repeating stations,” McLaughlin said. “Many of those stations can be linked together to cover a wide area such as states, regions and even worldwide. Certain frequencies allow for using the ionosphere to ‘bounce’ signals around the world.”

At the EOC, the personnel and fully equipped building can function self-sufficiently for an extended period of time.

There is a room for sleeping cots, and a plan in place for feeding the crew.

The building, which is built to withstand a Category 4 hurricane, sits on land that is 45 feet above sea level, so it will be safe against storm surges and flooding.

Hunter has a reminder about hurricanes and evacuation orders: “We cannot respond to an emergency call if there are sustained winds over 45 miles per hour … and there will be no response until the wind speed goes down. Please evacuate if you are told to do so.”

April 28 was a beautiful day for gardening.

A group of Sun City residents, members of the Nature Tours Guides/Drivers, Sun City Golf Club and the Environmental Action Group gathered at hole No. 14 at Hidden Cypress to spread some beautiful soil and scatter wildflower seed.

In May, native grasses were planted to provide four-season interest. (Normally when planting a meadow, the grasses go in first. However, due to Covid-19 disruptions in supply chains, the grasses could not be shipped until late May – too late to scatter the seeds.)

The Sun City Golf Club was looking for a project to help beautify the golf courses and decided adding a new wildflower area would be the perfect solution. Thanks to their support, this will now be a reality.

This new bed was designed to be enjoyed both by golfers and those walking on the pathway along Landing Lane.

A meadow is defined as an area of land covered by grasses, wildflowers and other non-woody plants such as herbs. Trees and shrubs are generally not found in a meadow.

Meadows provide habitat for pollinators and other insects, birds and small mammals.

Even a small meadow can provide a significant increase in biodiversity by providing food and shelter.

The flower seed scattered here is primarily native with some non-native mixed in. There is a mix of annuals – which will bloom this summer – and perennials that will establish roots this year and bloom next year and beyond.

Meadows require patience. The first year,

the space might look a little sparse, with small plants and scattered flowers, and maybe a few weeds here and there. The second year, and every year after, will continue to improve, with more flowers and more mature grasses.

There will be three different varieties of grasses, one tall and two short, planted in the center of the bed and on either end, with some of the shorter varieties scattered throughout.

The tall variety is called Indian Grass, which is one of the most beautiful of the native grasses, with upright blue-green blades. It will develop towering feathery golden-brown seed fronds in the fall while the blades turn a golden tan.

The two smaller varieties are Little Bluestem and Prairie Dropseed. Little Bluestem also has bluish-green stems which transition to orange, red and yellow in the fall. Prairie Dropseed has deep green foliage topped with fragrant airy golden plumes in late summer.

These should provide a lot of fall and winter interest when the flowers are dormant.

Meadows are generally mowed once a year, in late winter or early spring, to prevent woody plants from becoming established while allowing the seed heads and other plant material to remain over the winter to support birds and insects.

We are hoping to add additional planting areas on the golf courses and will let everyone know when we do. In the meantime, enjoy the flowers blooming in the garden on Hidden Cypress No. 3 to the right of the green and the large area on Okatie Creek No. 4 to the left of the tee boxes.

I am the first to admit that I have always hated cold weather. As a youngster I never wanted to play outside in the winter.

My poor mother would take the time to dress me up in my pink snowsuit with white boots, scarf and mittens. Then she’d send me off to play in the cold freezing flurries.

I would be crying as soon as I got shoved out the back door. I’d plunk myself down in that fluffy white powder and purposely wet through my pants and snowsuit. I knew my mother would allow me back inside the warmth of the house. It worked every time!

So, when my husband mentioned that it was his longtime dream to live in Phoenix, I was on board. He had been stationed there while in the Navy in the late 1950s and fell in love with the area.

In the ’70s we decided to head west with the prospect of finding paradise.

We were driving a big hog of a Pontiac convertible. Our intention was to check out the area, price housing and spend four days in our future dream area – in July.

I was such a perfectionist that I would never dream of leaving the house without a full face of makeup.

Hair had to be perfectly groomed and the “uniform of the times” was a mini skirt and go-go boots. So there I was, dressed to kill, when our car overheated in the desert in 120-degree weather.

I could have fried chicken inside that vehicle, while we sat there waiting for the engine to cool down. I was beyond hot by the time we were back on the road.

However, the second time we overheated, I was getting a little testy, to say the least.

I had a human hair wig neatly

plopped on my head. My natural bangs and exposed sides were soaking wet from sweat dripping off my forehead, nose and chin.

The next thing I knew some big black bug had landed on my cheek.

I was freaking out! I pulled down the visor mirror to see if it was a scorpion.

Heavy black mascara was slowly running down my flushed cheeks and that “bug” ended up being one of my false eyelashes, which had come unglued.

My hair and wig were so plastered to my face that I had the appearance of just exiting the shower.

Half an hour later, hubby got the car going again – but now our air-conditioner wasn’t working.

I insisted on stopping for something cold to drink. We pulled off the freeway when we saw a restaurant. I could hardly wait to get inside the cool diner to order a nice tall ice tea.

Within 10 minutes I was shivering so badly my teeth were chattering. My wet clothing was stuck to my overheated body that was being blasted with extremely cold air-conditioning. I could hardly wait to return to our hot car.

We pulled into Phoenix that evening. It was 117 degrees at 6 p.m. – in the shade. I was like a raving maniac with soaked clothing, mascara all over my face, one eyelash and a sopping wet wig plastered to my head.

We cut our trip short, by spending only that night, and went on to California for a vacation. Phoenix was never mentioned again.

A few years later we were transferred to Houston. What was the difference? Phoenix was like living inside an oven. Houston was like living in a damp smoldering sauna.

What did I learn? South Carolina is perfect!
