Book Exchange starts new chapter in yet another space

The Sun City Book Exchange has moved four times in the past 15 years, and Joan Ruffino, resident and volunteer, has worked on them all.

The iconic Book Exchange has an official membership of 2,460 and has been part of the Sun City landscape since 1998. Ruffino described the recent move into a newly renovated space in Palmetto Commons and explained that there was a sense of déjà vu.

“The moves took us from Palmetto Commons to Pinckney Hall, and back again,” Ruffino said.

To accomplish this move, the Book Exchange closed on March 24 and the new facility had a soft opening May 2. There might be a big splash when they (the Sun City Hilton Head Community Association) hold the Palmetto Commons reopening. No date for that has been set.

What is a book exchange? According to the president, Kathy Lewis, it’s different

from a library. “All books, puzzles, DVDs and audio books are donated by members and residents,” Lewis said. “There is no need to return (items) on a designated date; thus, no late fee.”

If a patron is looking for a certain book, he or she fills out a form and when it comes in, a phone call is made to let the person know the book is ready for pick-up.

Sandy Holz, Book Exchange volunteer, board member at large, and a long-time librarian from northern New Hampshire, hastens to clarify that the exchange is different but similar to a typical library.

“It is set up like a library. Everything is in order,” Holz said.

Many of the more than 100 volunteers are former school librarians. “All librarians love their jobs, and cannot get enough of books,” Holz said. “The move was quite a project.

Sun City helped us move 500 boxes. Volunteers did all the packing and unpacking.”

have great natural lighting, since we have a skylight and a window. It’s beautiful, and you can really see the titles. More people will read different types of books, since they are all so visible.”

Holz noted that the space has wider aisles and an accessible bathroom. “We’re hoping for some benches out in front so there will be a place to sit,” she said.

The new Book Exchange is tucked in on the right side of Palmetto Commons, as one approaches it. Holz thinks that eventually there will be signs.

Volunteer Niles Bernick salvaged beautiful wood from the Pinckney Book Exchange rooms to refine the new shelves. He is making ends and backstops, which will be notched to fit exactly, so books won’t slide off the shelves.

This way, the books will be safe, and the volunteers will have a little part of the Pinckney Book Exchange in the new space.

Book Exchange dues are a real bargain at $1 a year. “For that, you are kept informed by email concerning what is going on at the Book Exchange,” Lewis said. “We love the Pulte salesman who brings in a potential homeowner and says, ‘Best amenity in Sun City and it only costs one dollar a year.’”

The Book Exchange is a huge operation, and a force in the community. They receive lots of donated books, and there is literally no room for them.

Last year Sun City Book Exchange volunteers facilitated the donation of 15,000 books. According to Ruffino, they went to “a variety of nursing homes, prisons, charity groups, vet’s hospitals, and libraries. When Hardeeville built the new library, we gave

them lots of books.”

Last year, the group also donated $500 each to literacy specialty groups including Jasper County First Step/Little Libraries, Born to Read, the Lowcountry Neighborhood Outreach Connection, and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ program called Mr. Pig’s Book Nooks, which can be found in Piggly Wiggly stores. Kids can take out a book, read it, and bring it back.

One of the popular things about the Book Exchange is the volunteer recommendation shelf. Patrons often go to that first, to see what the volunteers and Sun City residents are reading.

What is this group of volunteers reading now?

Ruffino, who prefers nonfiction, is reading the “Accidental President” about Harry Truman, by A.J. Baime. Bernick’s current read is “Lincoln in the Bardo” by George Saunders, which he says is very strange.

by Paula McLain. Holz is reading “The Lincoln Highway” by Amor Towles, which she says she waited for months to get.

Holz noted that she goes to the bookmobile, the public library and the Book Exchange for her books, and says they all complement one another.

Hours at the Sun City Book Exchange are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.

“The dedicated volunteers worked very, very hard so we could reopen,” Holz said.

The Environmental Action Group was busy over Earth Day weekend organizing and participating in a Roadside Cleanup on Friday and the Sun City Earth Day Celebration on Sunday.

The cleanup saw 20 residents armed with grabbers and orange trash bags, supplied by Jasper County Conservation District, pick up debris along both sides and the median strip of Okatie Center Boulevard North from Palmer Grace to Okatie Highway 170. The EAG is adopting this road and will continue to pick up litter there on a routine basis.

Baylor Brook Drive and Tidewatch Blvd. were also cleaned. More than 50 bags were filled with litter; numerous large items, including a bed frame, a carpet, and several tires, were collected and set out for Jasper County collection.

Mother Nature blessed us with a beautiful day to commemorate her as

eight Sun City clubs and 15 outside groups and vendors came together for the Celebration at the Pavilion, where several hundred residents came for ideas on how they could “Invest in Our Planet,” the theme of the day.

The EAG’s 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Replace, Recycle) Action Team gave out earth-friendly sample toiletries, household products, and shopping bags as well as tips on ways to be kinder to our planet. The team’s takeaway was that “people really want to learn more about sustainable alternatives and are surprised at how easy and affordable adopting them can be.” Savannah Refillery offered advice on getting away from toxic household products.

Avant Gardeners and Bird Clubs explained how native plants benefit the earth while requiring little water, no fertilizers, and minimal upkeep. Natives are not damaged by our weather’s dry spells or occasional frosts.

Beaufort Jasper Water offered ideas on saving water, while Palmetto Electric gave tips on conserving energy. Waste Management made suggestions for more efficient recycling.

Many of the community’s solar homeowners gathered for a group photo. Several wearing “Ask Me About My Solar Home” T-shirts were available to explain how their solar installations were saving them money while investing in a healthier planet.

Sun City residents Bob Coughlin and Phil Mastman shared the wonders of their Tesla Electric Vehicles. Visitors got to see these revolutionary cars up close.

A lucky few took test drives.

Gene and Andrea Bigelow demonstrated their vast array of battery-powered landscaping equipment and were frequently asked, “When will Sun City join the growing number of commu-

nities that restrict the use of air- and noise-polluting gas-powered equipment?”

Beaufort Conservation District, Coastal Conservation League, and Conservation Voters of South Carolina shared concerns regarding the health of our natural resources and how their organizations work to protect them.

The Eat Smart, Live Longer Club’s idea of finding a food truck willing to offer some vegan items was a good one.

Mother Smokin’ Good came through in a big way, pleasing some with their conventional BBQ’d meats and others with their vegan fare. Those who enjoy pulled pork should try a BBQ Jackfruit sandwich. A plant-based diet is not only better for you, but for the earth as well!
