Roy Austin dreamed of seeing the big animals in Africa. His late wife, Sharon, convinced him to go. When he finally went, his life changed.

Though he loved the animals he saw, he was compelled by a trip to a rural school. “Someone in the group asked if the school had a library,” he said. “The teacher’s eyes lit up! She said, ‘No, but we’d love to!’”

Back at home, Austin, a long-time Sun City resident, could not stop thinking about that comment, the school and the teacher. He began collecting books to send back to Kenya.

As a kid, Austin said, he didn’t even

have a library card, and didn’t particularly enjoy reading. “My brother and I liked to wander in the woods and play baseball,” he said. “I was a left fielder.”

Ultimately, he went from his Pittsburgh home to Bethany College in West Virginia, and then the Army. In the 25th Infantry Division, he was an artillery forward observer, in the days before GPS. “When you looked at a map, you always hoped you were where you thought you were,” he said.

Through serendipity, Austin ended up working in an office and then managing 15 officers’ clubs on his base in Vietnam. “While I was there, I got to know Vietnamese people, and

After the Army, Austin worked in various accounting jobs, got an MBA, and discovered that he loved learning strategies that caused positive results in businesses.

His interest led to a career as a consultant and business coach, and eventually he wrote a book, “The Alligator Business Solution.”

“It makes sense when you think about it,” he said. “What does an alligator do? He lurks, lunges and chomps.” Austin explained that often small business owners know their business, whatever it is they do, but they don’t know ABOUT business.

He said his book was designed to “provide the reader with a mini-MBA. It’s what you need to know to start a small business.”

Three years ago, Austin started another venture. He had never forgotten about that teacher in Kenya and her wish for a library in the school.

Austin envisioned and then created Libraries For Kids International, a 501(c)(3) organization that provides books for children across Kenya.

The project started small but, he said, “Now more than 360,000 children have libraries in their schools, the teachers say that enrollment in these schools has skyrocketed, and the scores on national exams are up.”

He is dedicated to realizing his dream of libraries in all 6,700 rural Kenyan schools, and Libraries For Kids is well on the way. There are 1,613 libraries in place now.

Here’s how it works: Libraries For Kids funds the shipping of containers full of books through Books for Africa, an organization that collects and ships books. “You give them the address and the money to fund it and they send it,” Austin explained. “In our case, it goes to a warehouse in Kitui, Kenya. It costs about $19,000 to fund a container of 38,000 to 42,000 books.”

Books for Africa is another 501(c) (3) that has shipped 55 million books to Africa over the past 33 years.

Kids operations coordinator in Kenya, has helped Austin as his contact “on the ground.”

“To me, this project is personal,” she said. “I see myself in the children when we visit the schools.”

Austin describes Wanjiku as “remarkably resourceful.” She searched for and found a warehouse for the organization to use in Kitui, and she oversees the entire process of getting the books to the kids.

First, when the books arrive at the warehouse, every one of them must be stamped Libraries For Kids, Not For Sale. “We sort them to fit whether they will go to a primary school or a high school. We take truck loads to a central location, and then teams deliver them,” Wanjiku said. “They are delivered mostly on the backs of motor bikes. At times the delivery boys have to leave the bikes behind and carry the boxes on their shoulders.

They are always our heroes when they finally bring in stamped delivery notes as confirmation that the books have been delivered to the schools.”

To add fire-power to this remarkable organization, Libraries For Kids has recently announced an exquisitely qualified spokesperson, U.S. Olympic team long-distance runner Aliphine Tuliamuk, who was born in Kenya and went to school there. She later went to Wichita State University in Kansas, where she was an All-American athlete. Tuliamuk was the first from her village to graduate from college.

The needs for Libraries For Kids are many, and Austin is always seeking support for the organization. “We need money to ship the books,” he said. “One hundred percent of donations go to the program unless designated for administration.”

April brings two special Earth Day events to Sun City

As it happens every year since 1970, Earth Day will be celebrated April 22 around the planet.

Here in Sun City, residents will have two opportunities to do their part to help save Mother Earth.

A Community Cleanup will be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 22 on Okatie Center Blvd. North.

Jasper County Conservation District will provide trash bags, trash grabbers and safety vests. Participants will meet behind Cracker Barrel at 10 a.m.

The event is sponsored by Sun City’s Environmental Action Group (EAG). It’s a fun way to get together outdoors and do a little something to beautify our surroundings.

Then, on April 24, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Sun City 2022 Earth Day Celebration will be held at the Pavilion.

We join nearly 200 nations to celebrate Earth Day’s 52nd anniversary, when more than a billion people worldwide will gather to honor the foundation of all life, our Earth.

The idea of the first Earth Day came from the after-effects of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, Calif. A call went out to take a stand for our environment, and thousands rallied for a healthy, sustainable Earth.

The annual event has grown exponentially, and the celebrations helped bring about an awareness that led to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency and to the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts.

Sun City swimmers splash to top Sun City Hilton Head Masters swimmers won Top Ten Awards in both Relays and Individual Events in 2021.

The U.S. Masters Swimming organization tracks all swim competitions under its jurisdiction and publishes an annual listing of the fastest Top 10 swimmers in each event and distance for individuals and relay teams.

Each swimmer is rated against others in the same 5-year age bracket, and not against younger or older swimmers.

In Individual events, Ann Tullie swam US Masters Top Ten times in 400 Free, 200 Back, 100 Fly, 200 IM and 400 IM events. Chet Richards earned Top Ten status in 100 Fly, 200 IM and 400 IM. Pete Gordon swam Top Ten times in 400 Free and 1500 Free events.

In Relay events, the team of Ellen Bertram, Pete Gordon, Cynthia Smith, and Rick McFadden earned First in the country in the 200 Mixed Medley Re-

lay. The same team also placed in the Top Ten in the 200 Mixed Free Relay and 400 Mixed Free Relay events.

In the 400 Men’s Medley Relay, the team of Don Sealey, Rick McFadden, Chet Richards, Mike Farnham earned Top Ten honors. Ruth Dvorscak, Cynthia Smith, Debra Walsh, Ginny Taylor swam a Top Ten time in the 400 Women’s Medley Relay.

In the 200 Mixed Free Relay, Ginny Taylor, Cynthia Smith, Rick McFadden, and Mike Farnham earned a Top Ten Award.

Ruth Dvorscak, Rick McFadden, Cynthia Smith, and Mike Farnham swam a Top Ten time in the 400 Mixed Medley Relay. In the 400 Mixed Medley Relay, Debra Walsh, Don Sealey, Ann Tullie, and Chet Richards also achieved a Top Ten time.

The Sun City Hilton Head Masters team is a part of the Sun City Hilton Head Swim club. Congratulations to all the swimmers!

Fur babies have a sneaky way of taking over our lives

My friend recently purchased an 8-weekold adorably docile Golden Retriever puppy.

This fluffy little bundle would snuggle into a furry mound after her daily routine of eating, going outside and napping the afternoon away.

By 13 weeks, that same canine fuzz ball had been energized into a hyper little rug rat, zooming around the house like someone had inserted an EverReady battery inside her rapidly growing body.

She’d briskly flash by like her tail was ablaze. A glimpse of gold fur would zoom from room to room. She thought she was being chased by the bathroom tissue that dangled from her drooling mouth. Do you realize how many rooms one super-size roll of toilet paper can cover?

New play toys are scattered through the house, yet that toilet paper roll, or even the wood in the bathroom cabinets, held far more fascination than any competing

purchase from a pet store. Toys were strewn around the house while she played ball in the bathroom shower-stall or intently pulled a thread on the Berber carpeting and ran with it.

I once had two Maltese puppies that took delight in chewing the fabric off my new chair and ottoman. That mishap was superseded only by my Aussie pup grabbing hold of the seam of our newly installed linoleum and running 20 feet.

That same Aussie, which is bred as a herding dog, would sprint over our 10 acres chasing the ducks and geese until they were fearful to leave the pond without first checking the terrain.

One year, bluing was added to the pond water to give it a lovely hue of the deep ocean tranquility. Unfortunately, the white ducks and Pilgrim geese turned pale blue and the tri-colored Aussie was midnight black, blue and forest green.

The neighbors often stopped to admire what looked like a pasture undergoing an Easter egg hunt with blue flapping-winged

fowl being chased by a multi-colored Australian Shepherd idiot.

One beautiful summer day the Aussie decided to herd my quarter horse. I had noticed that the gelding’s long flowing tail, which normally touched the ground, was getting shorter each week. I couldn’t figure out what was happening as I took pride on his gorgeous full extension.

As I was cleaning the kitchen, I happened to look out the window. At that exact moment I watched that goofy Aussie run alongside the quarter horse, leap up and grab hold of his swishing agitated tail.

The Aussie sailed through the air, riding

that tail all the way around to the other side of the horse’s belly. Once he’d swing up against that barrel, he’d jump off to begin the game again.

Short tail? Mystery solved!

Today our two dogs are as old as we are.

The 13- old is blind and deaf. She could use a seeing-eye dog – and hearing aids, like my husband. The 9-year-old is still puppylike in her actions, but both animals have reverted to that puppy stage when they sleep about 22 hours a day.

We have a large box full of retired toys that no longer have to worry about being chewed apart. We mechanically jump up every two hours throughout the day for their bathroom breaks.

From puppy, to youngster, to middle age, to old canine, I’ve lived through 58 years of laughs, personalities and love of each breed.

The only change, from then to now, is that I live in a household full of geriatrics.
