“It’ll add 10 years to your life!”

So said Dennis Morris, one of many Sun City residents who has been “grooming” trees for about 10 years is enthusiastic about the benefits of bonsai. Morris’s wife, Gloria said, “It keeps him calm.”

The art of grooming, or training, trees using techniques that include careful pruning and wiring has roots in China and Japan, and goes back thousands of years. Bonsai is a Japanese word made up of two characters or word phrases, “bon” and “sai,” which translates to mean “tree in a pot.”

Chinese bonsai emphasizes having just the right pot and accepts the use of appropriate rocks or small figures to enhance the scene.

Japanese bonsai is thought to have been brought from China, and adheres to more rigid guidelines. The Japanese style is less likely to use any additional items to enhance the tree.

The art of bonsai spread to the rest of the world in the early 1900s.

Some say they are shaping, styling, or grooming bonsais; others say the tree is in training.

“These are not house plants, and these are not dwarf trees,” said Mary Romano, who is the bonsai special interest group (SIG) leader for the Avant Gardeners in Sun City. “They are potentially full-sized trees that are trained to grow small. Any plant that ultimately grows woody can be a bonsai. We say the plant is in training.”

Romano said that often trees are marked or tagged “in training” and then marks the year the training began.

Among enthusiasts, rarely does one have just one bonsai. Romano has around 30.

There are bonsai trees that belong to the SIG and are rotated among members. That way new members can learn, and many people have a hand in training the tree.

Some members have bonsai that are already on the way. Pete Kellos has one that he got from his father 12 years ago. He thinks it’s about 25 years old. Kellos catalogues his trees and keeps a photo record of them.

“It’s a good pandemic activity,” said Don Ming, another bonsai SIG member. “All you have to do is buy a plant and make it into a bonsai. Some books recommend defoliating the entire tree. We’re talking about decidu-

Years ago, the man of the house picked up a 20-year-old bikini-clad beauty at the beach. Standing at a height of 5’10”, with long shapely legs, tiny waistline and red flowing hair, I mesmerized him with the long batting lashes of my blue eyes.

For him, I was probably just another conquest.

For me, I knew the minute I sat on his beach blanket that he was going to be my husband. Odd, due to the fact that I was already engaged. Yet, in that moment, I was certain this was the man I was meant to be with … forever. It was as if fate brought us together that day.

Back then I was always a shy girl. Brought up in a fairly religious household, I would never think to cut classes, drink or curse. I was sweet devoted wife material!

That’s what he thought he was getting. We married on Nov. 14. I asked him recently when he thinks my personality began to change from that tender shy girl to the person I am today. His reply, “Nov. 15.”

Fast forward three kids, seven homes and 58 years later. That slender beach bunny has turned into an ugly nightie wife.

Anymore I can’t even see my toes, much less find a waistline. Coiffured hair has been replaced with a thin, drab, red ponytail generally highlighted with an inch of white roots.

Why? Because it’s easy and requires no effort on my part.

If I have to go out of the house, I will make up my eyes while the rest of my sun-damaged face goes void of cosmetics. A mask hides a multitude of sins.

Many of my original parts have been replaced with modern day hardware over the years. It’s like putting new parts on a rusty old jalopy and thinking that tarnished rust bucket it going to transform refreshed and spiffy. Wrong!

One day my husband and I were holding hands walking towards a building.

Sweet, you might think, because we are still holding hands at our tender old age?

Actually now we do it to balance and hold one another up.

As we approached the medical center, I looked at our reflection in the glass. Two adult penguins! That’s exactly how we reflected, both rocking from side to side on our duel hip replacements.

We rarely go outside anymore, as the media has us believing that if we share breath with another human being we will perish.

So my life consists of yogurt and fruit for breakfast, a large salad for dinner and chocolate mint patties to make me smile and keep my spirits up.

I am constantly laundering nighties as they have become my uniform of choice.

You’d think I was living in a nursing home.

Some evenings I even go to a neighbor’s house for a glass of the bubbly, in my pajamas. She greets me at the door in her nightie.

When I gander into the mirror today I wonder what happened to that young girl in the white bikini. Gone are the long sweeping eyelashes, replaced with hooded eyes.

Gone are the willowy slender legs, as I’m three inches shorter since the days of the sand beneath my feet.

When I recently asked my husband if he still sees me as that pretty girl, he replied, “This is where my macular degeneration helps!”

ous trees only. I’ve been doing this less than two years, so last year I did a test on 10% of a tree with success. This year I will defoliate 100%.”

Another technique is to cut the leaves in half. Romano adds that you need to be careful because you can kill a plant with some of these methods. She showed a poinsettia plant that she is training to be a bonsai.

Poinsettias grow into woody plants and, after two years, it is clear that the leaves of this plant are much smaller.

Morris, who grows his own moss and makes his own soil, has made bonsai grooming into a business. He displays and sells his juniper bonsai trees at the Bluffton Farmers Market in Old Town. Market Executive Director Kim Viljac said, “I have one and I haven’t killed it yet. Dennis and his bonsai trees are a beautiful addition to our Farmers Market.”

The market has been in Bluffton more than 10 years, and operates from its location on Green Street every Thursday from noon to 5 p.m.

After purchasing a bonsai from Morris, the buyer gets to strike a gong three times “and

receive luck, health and happiness,” he said.

John Rhyan has been in the Bonsai SIG for eight years. He is into tanuki which joins a living tree to an interesting piece of deadwood that has the form of a weathered tree trunk. The deadwood has a channel or groove cut into it.

Over time, the young tree grows into the deadwood channel, which disguises the fact that it is a separate entity. Rhyan admits that he doesn’t worry too much about the rules of bonsai. “If it feels good to do it, and looks good to you, then that’s good.”

Romano explained that because a good bonsai can take decades to develop, and because many members of the Sun City Bonsai SIG start without previous experience, she teaches members methods to produce the quickest end to the goal. “That’s good for those of us who are growing older,” she said with a smile. “We don’t have that much time to wait.”
