Spirit Rock sparks controversy Kate Seltzer Senior Writer
On Thursday morning of last week, students awoke to a new message on the Spirit Rock: in black, seemingly hastingly scrawled writing, “18 school shootings in 2018.” Previously, the rock displayed an advertisement for a firearm safety and concealed carry permit course sponsored by UMW’s Firearms Club. The new message comes in the wake of a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
While the 18 school shootings statistic has been widely cited in recent days, Politifact rates it as “mostly false.” The number includes any incident where a gun was fired, intentionally or otherwise, in school or on school property. Of the 18, three qualified as mass shootings. Although the higher number is misleading, it does speak to a higher frequency of school shootings than anywhere else in the world. According to ABC News, the shooting in Parkland is the seventh deadliest in modern US •ROCK | 10

Firearms club of UMW hosts safety strategies course Grace Winfield Senior Writer
On Friday evening, students of the University of Mary Washington gathered in Dodd auditorium for a four hour-long safety strategies course hosted by the Firearms Club of UMW. The class advertised practical defensive tools and techniques, understanding criminal cues and how to use technology to assist with smart safety solutions. Also included was a Virginia Conceal Carry course, allowing participants to obtain their own Conceal Carry Permit. The course was taught by instructor Jody Maki, founder and owner of GirlOnFire (GOF). According to the GOF website, “Girl on Fire is a national movement to decrease

The club fully complied with the UMW weapons policy, as no firearms were present Friday night. “The Firearms Club wished to host this event because many were interested in receiving their Conceal Carry Permit,” Johnson said. “We wanted to allow the opportunity for those in the UMW community who are not a part of the club to have the chance to complete a Personal Safety Strategies course or •FIREARMS | 2
