“I was yearning to connect with students, their families and my colleagues authentically. I needed to find a place where this connection was possible. I needed to teach the way my heart told me was right and where my students were able to take intellectual risks and be bold in their pursuit of knowledge. I knew we’d have to know one another and trust one another. At Blake, I have the unique privilege of knowing, seeing and understanding my students. Time is built into my day to nurture these connections. We use all of the day to see and know each other.

In Ms. Johnson’s physics classroom, students leave more curious and filled with more questions than when they arrived. Ms. Johnson and her students stretch each other to create an environment where teaching and learning is a collaborative process resulting in shared successes as they strive for excellence. At Blake, community is what makes excellence possible.
