A MESSAGE FROM THE PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

A

s the days of summer wind down and our thoughts return to the bustle of school, I’m excited to reach out to Bishop’s families through our reintroduction of News You Can Use (NYCU). Meant to be an overview of people, places and traditions, we hope it serves as a handy guide to all things Bishop’s.

While the last few years have been anything but normal, we’ve become acutely aware of the importance of connection and community. I was grateful to see everyone return to campus last fall, bringing back to life the traditions and events that make Bishop’s such a special place.

This year our Parents’ Association (PA) theme is “Commit to Connect.” While every member of the Bishop’s community is naturally part of the Parents’ Association, we encourage you to attend our monthly PA meetings (dates/times for the fall meetings are below) and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the PA to connect with other families, faculty and staff. These connections help strengthen

the community that supports and nurtures our students and each other.

I’m thrilled to be volunteering with you this year, and am forever grateful for the opportunity to serve in this role. I encourage you all to commit to connect with Bishop’s this year – there is something at Bishop’s for everyone! WHO TO CONTACT Sometimes navigating adolescence can be a challenge and your student may need some extra support.

Bishop’s team of administrators and support personnel are committed to our students and are here to help them navigate through any difficulties, whether social, emotional or academic. As an adult, the urge to jump in and help your student is hard to resist. We strongly suggest that you to direct your student to the resources on campus who can help and encourage them to make the initial contact.

ADVISORS

Every student is assigned to an advisory group led by a faculty member. Advisories meet for five minutes every morning and for an extended period two times per week. Your student’s advisor is a great first contact for questions or concerns and can help your student identify needed resources on campus. You can find your student’s advisor and contact information with your Bishop’s login at bishops.myschoolapp.com.

Brian oversees the curricular and academic program at Bishop’s. He ensures that curriculum and skills for grades 6-12 are closely aligned with the School's mission and values.

Stephanie oversees the learning services team which includes The Learning Center, SAGE tutoring program and the Writing Center.

Bishop’s Learning Services staff work with students to help them better understand the skills and strategies that enable them be independent thinkers, learners and self-advocates. The learning services team's resources are available to all students and are included in Bishop’s tuition.

Learning services is located on the top floor of the Manchester Library and Learning Center.

Megan and her team are committed to helping students grow personally, socially, emotionally and academically. DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION & JUSTICE (DEIJ)

The 2022-23 school year marks my tenth year at Bishop’s and in San Diego, and yet I remember all-toowell the feeling of entering this place for the first time, unsure of how or where to connect. The feeling of belonging, of knowing that I was integral to the life of this institution that came over time, is the exact feeling that we strive for all of our students to achieve through their various relationships, activities, curricula and experiences at Bishop’s. Diversity, equity, inclusion and justice (DEIJ) work aims for belonging among our students, their families, faculty and staff by creating space for curiosity, discovery, discussion, learning and affirmation; justice refers to the actions we take to ensure that one person’s belonging does not come at the cost of someone else’s.

With 800 students who reside in more than 50 different zip codes throughout San Diego County, Bishop’s students arrive with various backgrounds, family structures, genders, ethnic and cultural identities, socio-economic structures, learning strengths and challenges, and perspectives through which they see the world. Together, they make up a dynamic environment in which they learn and grow with one another, no two being the same, and each striving to belong in this community.

You may experience or hear of your students' experiencing DEIJ at Bishop’s in one of three ways:

COMMUNITY

All of our students will share DEIJ experiences out of the classroom that foster learning and conversation. Our advisory program earmarks time throughout the school year to engage in topical discussions that inform students on terms or issues; activities that promote sharing and vulnerability; and/or speakers who share their experiences of finding belonging.

CLASSROOM

Courses and coursework at Bishop’s will offer various ways to see, explore and discover new topics. Our classroom teachers promote diverse voices and perspectives in their teaching, and offer space for discussion and vulnerability, with the hope to offer content that is representative of the world and school we live in and share.

CO-CURRICULAR

DEIJ programming expands beyond our school day into clubs, organizations, affinity spaces and conferences that allow willing students to go deeper in their understanding of diversity, identity and culture. We offer clubs that celebrate diversity and gender and explore issues locally and nationally in our society for students in grades 6-8.

For students in grades 9-12, affinity spaces allow students to gather based on their shared identities. A handful of students each year attend the Student Diversity Leadership Conference (SDLC), sponsored by the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAIS); Bishop’s will again host the Regional Student Diversity Summit (RSDS), with Francis Parker, La Jolla Country Day and Pacific Ridge Schools; and we’ll offer peer facilitation training for students, faculty and staff led by the Anti-Defamation League in August 2022.

Students and families will receive updates on opportunities as they occur throughout the year.

The DEIJ Team consists of coordinators representing several different areas of the School and supporting aspects of our programming for all members of our community.

Our diversity statement, written with language shared in the Episcopal Baptismal Covenant, says, “Bishop’s is an inclusive community that believes our differences are a source of strength. We are committed to the pursuit of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. We respect the dignity of every human being and aspire to be a school where all are known, cared for, and feel that they belong.”

WELCOME BISHOP'S NEWEST FACULTY

ENGLISH HISTORY & SOCIAL SCIENCES Annie Fierberg joins Bishop's from the Crane Country Day School in Santa Barbara where she spent eight years teaching middle school history courses in addition to coaching basketball, soccer and flag football and serving as a class dean. Annie completed a teaching internship at New Canaan Country Day School and spent three summers working as a residential life staff member at Wolfeboro Summer Boarding School. Annie holds a B.A. in American studies with a minor in English literature from Connecticut College.

Priscilla Vargas Wrosch knows Bishop’s well as a visiting teacher of humanities classes in both the middle and the upper school. More recently, Priscilla was the lead teacher for sixth and seventh grade history classes at The Child's Primary School, where she also mentored and guided advanced research students through longterm research projects. Previously, Priscilla served as an appellate court attorney and spent seven years as a professor of legal research and writing at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law. Priscilla joins the eighth grade team as one of the lead American history instructors.

MATHEMATICS

Christina Li joins the sixth grade math team. Starting in 2013, Christina taught a range of courses from pre-Algebra to Calculus at Newport Christian School. While there she also led a sixth grade orientation program and served as director for grades 6-12 while also continuing to teach and earn her Ed.M at Columbia University Teachers College.

Dominique Voso joins the math and computer science departments from Riverdale Country Day in NYC where she taught for three years. In addition to teaching, Dominique will contribute to the Center for Creative Sciences and coach swimming.

THE BISHOP’S SCHOOL

Sara Islas, San Diego native, brings a wealth of experience in interdisciplinary humanities teaching, writing instruction, comparative literature and equitybased pedagogy to Bishop's. Sara has taught throughout California, most recently at High Tech Middle Mesa. At Bishop's, Sara is eager to return to the English classroom and bring her passion for writing and journalism to middle school students.

Kate Sugar joins the sixth grade team and the English department. Raised in San Diego, Kate began her teaching career in New York City teaching multiple subjects in area charter schools. Besides serving as an English and history lead teacher, Kate was also trained as an instructional coach and worked as a learning specialist before returning to San Diego in 2020 to teach seventh grade humanities at High Tech Middle Mesa. Kate brings experience in the areas of adolescent learning and development, interdisciplinary curriculum design and culturally responsive teaching.

SCIENCE

Cory Logan has returned to the Bishop’s middle school science department in a temporary capacity for the fall semester. Cory co-created our sixth grade program and we are thrilled to have her back to help shape our youngest scientists.

Marcus Milling has also rejoined the science department. Marcus was a teacher and department chair at Bishop’s for 10 years before leaving in 2016 to teach at Lincoln Community School in Accra, Ghana.

Most recently, he taught physics and served as science department chair at The Archer School for Girls in Los Angeles, where he worked to shift their physics curriculum to include more demonstrations and labs.

During his time at Bishop’s, Marcus was the primary author of the ninth grade physics curriculum. We are thrilled to have Marcus back on campus!

NEWS

WORLD LANGUAGES Nicole Uhland, a long-time San Diegan, joins our Spanish language program. After teaching Spanish for many years at Christian High School in El Cajon, Nicole joined the world languages department at Francis Parker School, where she served as department chair from 2020-2022. Nicole brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in the areas of second language acquisition, team-based departmental work, curriculum design and program development, as well as leadership experience in mock trial and student life. Nicole is working toward her M.A. degree in educational leadership at the University of San Diego.

Leah Rogstad joins the world languages department in the Spanish language program. Originally from Vermont, Leah began her teaching career in 2016 at The Webb Schools in Claremont, Calif., where she participated in all aspects of boarding school life and contributed to world language curriculum design. In 2019, Leah joined the Episcopal School of Los Angeles where she developed a Spanish curriculum for grades 7-12. Leah spent 2021 in Pamplona, Spain on a Fulbright grant, completing her M.A. degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

PERFORMING ARTS We are thrilled to welcome Kyle Melton back to the performing arts department as our technical theater and design instructor. Kyle taught at Bishop's for the 2016-2017 school year before joining the staff of The Old Globe Theater as Lead Properties Carpenter, where he worked for five years.

While Kyle was at The Old Globe, he remained connected to Bishop’s, supporting the performing arts program and the facilities team.

Kristen Tregar joins the Bishop’s Performing Arts department as our new theater arts teacher. Dr. Tregar has been teaching for more than a decade at the secondary and undergraduate levels. Her theatrical pursuits include directing, dramaturgy and devised performances. In collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded The Ireland Project, an intercontinental devised theater work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Kristen also worked in a variety of animal-related positions including as a wild animal keeper with the Wildlife Conservation Society.

She received her Ph.D. in theater and drama from the joint program at UC San Diego and UC Irvine, her B.A. in biology from Bryn Mawr College, her M.S. in forensic science from CUNY and her M.A. in educational theater from New York University.

NEW STAFF & TRANSITIONS New School Counselor Lauren Gray will partner with Director of Counseling Megan Broderick ’98 to support the entire community with a particular focus on middle school students. Lauren received her undergraduate degree in psychology from San José State University and her master's in social work at New York University. Lauren was a counselor in the middle school program at Coronado Unified School District for four years. She is looking forward to bringing her passion for supporting adolescents and their families to The Bishop's School.

Ben Heldt, a Bishop’s science teacher for six years and chair of the science department since 2019, has taken on the new role of dean of faculty. Ben will provide academic leadership, encourage excellence in teaching and promote the well-being and development of the faculty.

Jennifer Miller joined the learning services team after more than 10 years as a Bishop’s seventh-grade English teacher, advisor and grade-level sponsor. Her experience implementing curricula and learning plans and enthusiasm for finding ways to support neurodiversity in her work with students, families and teachers make this a great fit.

Shane Walton ’98 is the new director of student-athlete and coaching development. Shane brings a wealth of knowledge from his coaching, playing and counseling experience to this new role.

Catherine Beamer will serve as the math department chair for middle and upper school.

Laura Cummings will serve as Bishop’s new science department chair. Rachel Ching will be interim department chair for the fall semester.

This is often a student’s favorite time where they can grab something to eat and refuel mid-morning.

Every morning, the kitchen staff sets out cereal, milk and fruit in the cafeteria for students to enjoy. No one goes hungry at Bishop’s!

This is a special hang-out area for seniors only. Over the summer, rising seniors get out their paint brushes and cover the walls of the rec room with designs in their class color.

They also each sign their names on the senior bench. Seniors use the rec room to study or relax between classes, or play a rousing game of ping-pong!

ara Sweet has been the director of food services at Bishop’s for nearly 30 years. Every day, Sara and her crew prepare lunch for 800 students and nearly 200 faculty and staff. The lunch menu includes a hot daily special, vegetarian and gluten-free options, homemade soups, a pasta bar and salad.

Everything is prepared from scratch using locally-sourced meats and produce.

Some recent menus include: nacho bowl with rice and beans; chicken or jack fruit shawarma with rice, naan, tzatziki sauce and Greek salad; teriyaki-marinated salmon with broccoli, rice and spinach salad. Menus are posted weekly on line on the dining and transportation services resource board on Blackbaud (bishops.myschoolapp.com).

We asked Sara what are students’ favorite lunches.

Not surprisingly, kids continue to crave the usual suspects: pizza and hamburgers. But there were some other favorites that may surprise you!

First up, students love the Korean beef. Sara notes that it is served “with an optional pickled topping that is made with daikon radish and carrots that are shredded and marinated. It really surprises me how many students choose to have the pickle.”

Next up: garlic bread. Bishop’s makes their own with lots of butter, fresh garlic, parsley and Parmesan cheese. It’s a labor of love, but much appreciated by the students.

Finally, the students are always game for breakfast for lunch. “The little kids love it when we serve pancakes or waffles. They especially like it when we offer whipped cream.”

ANNOUNCING THE 2022-2023 BISHOP'S FAMILY PARTNERSHIP SPEAKER SERIES This year, the student support team introduces a new partnership with the Bishop’s family community. The goal is to help our families support their children as they navigate various moments, challenges and discussion topics in school.

THE VALUE OF VOLUNTEERING I have volunteered at Bishop’s bookstore for the past five years and I love it. I so enjoy directly connecting with the students who come in to buy books and snacks or just to chat for a few minutes. I will definitely keep offering to help Mrs. Saldaña and the rest of the bookstore crew for as long as my kids are at Bishop’s.

Our family started at Bishop's two years after moving from London to San Diego. I was delighted to be introduced to the Global Education Initiative (GEI) parent volunteer group at my first PA meeting. The people I met and the events I helped with opened my eyes to the incredible community at this school. From there I tried other volunteer roles, and through each experience I have enjoyed not only the opportunity to make great friends and feel truly connected with the community, but also to gain insight into my kids' lives that I would never have otherwise. I am grateful that Bishop's cultivates this partnership with families and actively fosters our community.

When I volunteered at the middle school pool party I witnessed Mr. Kim jump in the pool with the students. And not just jump in but cannonball! MORE WAYS TO GET INVOLVED! “What time is it? KNIGHT TIME!!!!”

The Knights Booster Group (KBG) is a group of volunteers who work with Bishop’s Athletics to support our sports teams, student-athletes and coaches. KBG organizes events to promote school spirit and build community around athletic events including: Bish Bowl, tailgates and the BESPYs (Bishop’s Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards).

KBG partners with the athletics department to present educational programs on student-athlete health and safety and the college recruiting process. They also organize and provide training and resources for athletics team parents.

BISHOP'S VISUAL ARTS COMMUNITY (BVAC)

The Bishop's Visual Arts Community (BVAC) is a group of hands-on volunteers who support Bishop’s Visual Arts, student artists and faculty, and are a resource for families who wish to engage in the innovation and creativity of the visual arts.

BVAC volunteers work with the visual arts department on students' art exhibitions on and off campus, connect the school community through visual arts and promote school spirit.

BVAC assists the visual arts department in partnering with local art museums and galleries to provide in-person and virtual exposure to art.

We welcome all new volunteers! If you are interested in getting involved, reach out to Song Zhang, BVAC Lead Parent, at szhang01@gmail.com. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month from 9 to 10 a.m. at school. The first BVAC meeting is Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022. Check out Knights News for upcoming meetings and events.

PERFORMING ARTS CIRCLE (PAC)

The Performing Arts Circle (PAC) is a group volunteering on behalf of middle and upper school students in the performing arts including choir, instrumental music, technical theater, dance, musicals and plays. PAC volunteers work "behind the scenes" to support and promote upcoming performances and build and foster a community among performing arts families.

PAC will meet on the second Monday of each month. Whether your child is a singer, dancer, actor, instrumentalist or loves to work on sets or costumes, please join us for our first meeting on Sept. 12 at 8:30 a.m. in the Manchester Board Room (MBR). You'll hear updates from the performing arts faculty, make connections with performing arts families and find out about volunteer opportunities. All new and returning families are welcome to join this wonderful group.

Beth is a member of Bishop’s Advancement team whose work helps support financial aid as well as all aspects of campus life. Beth’s focus is on family engagement. She is the liaison to the Parents' Association (PA), KBG, PAC and BVAC, working with each group on communications, event planning and organization and volunteer recruitment. She can help families navigate the School and identify resources to help answer any questions you may have.
