t is our hope that this edition of Farragut Life leaves you inspired and amazed at the many things happening in our beautiful communities during these warm, summer days. It has been a joy getting to know the people, places and events in Farragut and the surrounding counties.

As the Tennessee Volunteers prepare to hit the field, we are proud to salute native Tennessean Kippy Brown and his history playing and coaching the game of football. His career began right here in the small town of Sweetwater, and took him all the way to the Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks. You will also see photos from our trip to Seattle, where we met Kippy and his wife Deon for a behind the scenes tour of their home, as well as the Seahawks practice facility and locker room.

We are also featuring an interview with UT Sport Surface Director Darren Seybold,

who is responsible for installing natural grass throughout Neyland Stadium. He currently manages the turf for the thirteen major sports facilities on campus.

We have included a story about Harold Black, who was one of four African American students to be admitted to the University of Georgia, after a federal order for immediate desegregation in the fall of 1961.

In late September, our Balloon Fiesta will be taking place at the Tsali Notch Vineyard during the National Muscadine Festival. We are looking forward to joining everyone on over 200 acres of beautiful farmland and vineyards. We will have over 20 balloons participating. This is a fundraiser for CASA. More information on the Fiesta and the vineyard is available through our website.

Master Dry Does More Than Basements.

When AAA in Maryville called MasterDry they were sinking fast—literally. One whole side of their building had settled and sunk two inches. Other companies told them the entire wall had to be replaced (all 75 ft. of it!). This would seriously disrupt AAA’s operations—not to mention— cost a lot and wouldn’t really fix the underlying problem.

In order to stabilize and lift the structure to as near as its original condition, pier underpinning was the most effective method for the foundation repair. The repair consisted of a layout of 16 helical piers, which were spaced approximately 5’ to 6’ apart, to be driven to a torque correlating to an allowable loading capacity of 20,000 pounds each. Once the piers were driven and brackets installed and placed at the building’s footer, we were able to lift the structure to its original grade and roll the wall back.

Quarterback Peyton Manning wasn’t the only former East Tennessean who went to Super Bowl XLVIII in February. Seattle Seahawks’ Wide Receivers Coach, Kippy Brown, started his standout 44-year football career right here in Sweetwater, Tennessee.

To hear Kippy tell it, he owes much of his success to the good people and great lessons he learned in his hometown.

“If it hadn’t been for Coach King Berrong, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Brown.

“I probably would be working in a factory some place.”

Back in 1969, Sweetwater was a different place than it is today. Schools hadn’t been racially integrated yet, and it was quite rare for black athletes to hold key leadership positions on sports teams. Since Sweetwater High School never had a black quarterback before, Kippy was shocked and surprised when Coach

Berrong switched him from running back to QB. Just as unbelievable, Berrong replaced his own son, Steve, who played that position.

“Having a black quarterback was unheard of back then,” said Kippy. “But it was a huge blessing for me. The more Coach Berrong had confidence in me, the more confidence I had in myself, and that propelled me.”

As QB, Brown led Sweetwater to three consecutive state championship games, and they won the title in 1971 and 1972.

Kippy said it was that experience that changed the trajectory of his whole life.

Instead of graduating high school so he could qualify to work a factory job, Kippy dreamed of a bigger life for himself. His next goal was to become the first black quarterback of the Memphis Tigers at the University of Memphis, which he achieved in his sophomore year in 1974.

That same year, he started dating Deon, the woman who would become his wife.

She was attending Spelman College in Atlanta, but she was taking classes at the University of Memphis during the summer when the two met and fell in love. Kippy spent his sophomore year “burning up the asphalt to see her,� making the nearly eight-hour drive to Atlanta whenever he could. Deon decided to transfer to the University of Memphis so the two could be closer.

The two were married, and Deon immediately became pregnant with their first child, Jerome.

“Both our parents were determined that one of us had to quit school, but we made it work...I gave birth to Jerome over spring break and came back to school three weeks later,” said Deon. Five years later, they had their second child, Jennifer.

He even had a job waiting for him as a weekend sports reporter for a local television station when Coach Richard Williamson offered him a job as a Running Backs Coach with the Memphis Tigers. Once again, Kippy made history. He became the first black full-time coach in the team’s history.

Because of strict rules against students with sports scholarships also having full-time jobs, Kippy wasn’t able to work during the school year, so Deon became the breadwinner for the new family.

Brown graduated with a BA in Communications and planned to become

During his tenure with six NFL teams, Brown worked with Blair Thomas (Jets), Brett Favre (Packers), Dan Marino (Dolphins), Errict Rhett (Buccaneers), Karim Abdul-Jabbar (Dolphins), Ahman Green (Packers), Andre Johnson (Texans) and Calvin Johnson (Lions).

“I’ve been lucky to have been around some really fine football players,” Brown said. “But you always remember the underdogs. I coached a kid at Tennessee that walked on there. This guy was out of Karns High School (in Knoxville), and his mother brought him to me.”

“I couldn’t work during the year. She went to school full-time, she worked full-time, she supported us,” said Brown with a smile, adding, “She’s very pretty. And smarter than me.”

“It was a struggle,” said Deon, “but we had support from both parents, who looked after the kids. And Kippy worked all summer.” Deon graduated with a degree in Mathematics and went on to get her Master’s in Curriculum Instruction.

Well, if there was any doubt whether Brown made the right career move or not, one only has to look at the impressive roster of talent Kippy helped mold, mentor and develop during his career. In three different stints at the University of Tennessee, Kippy Brown coached Peyton Manning, Anthony Miller, Tim McGee, Alvin Harper and Carl Pickens. In one season at Louisville, he mentored Mark Clayton.

“Sometimes, I wonder if I made the right choice,” said Brown with a laugh, wondering what would have happened if he reported on games instead of coaching them.

“I never will forget it. She sat in my office with her son and said, ‘He’s going to do everything you tell him to do. You have any problem, you call me.’ Well, she had cancer, and she died a little over a year later. He was an undersized kid, and he worked and he worked and he worked and did everything I told him to do.”

That “kid” was J.J. McCleskey, who went on to play in the NFL for the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals.

In 1983, Kippy returned to his roots in the state of Tennessee helping Coach Johnny Majors. During his first stint with the Vols from 1983-89, Kippy helped Tennessee acquire the nickname “Wide Receiver U.”

Above: Kippy returned to Rocky Top when Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer convinced him to return to the collegiate ranks as assistant head coach and wide receivers coach for two seasons (1993-94). He brought an offensive flair from the professional ranks to the UT offensive package as the Vols compiled a 18-6 record and outscored their opponents 847-383 over the course of those two years.

“I knew Carl Pickens was going to play (in the NFL). I knew Tim McGee was going to play. I knew Anthony Miller was going to play. I knew all those guys were going to play pro football,” Brown said. “But nobody could have imagined J.J. McCleskey playing professional football. That makes my day.”

Brown also coached Peyton Manning during Manning’s freshmen year with the Tigers. “Peyton and I know each other very well. I only coached him one year, but we still say hello to each other at the beginning and end of games.”

When asked about the lopsided victory against the Denver Broncos at

last year’s Super Bowl, Kippy gave his short analysis of the game. “Well, they turned over the ball on the first play of the game. You can’t give good teams opportunities like that. John Majors (UT head coach) taught me this: ‘If you play good defense, have sound special teams and don’t turn over the ball, you’ll win a lot of games.’ I’ve found that to be true.”

“Being at the Super Bowl was surreal,” said Deon. “We’d been together 39 years, and we’d never been to a Super Bowl.

After we won, we just looked at each other and said, ‘Wow can you believe it?’

On the morning of the game, Richard Williamson, the former coach of the University of Memphis who launched Kippy’s coaching career, sent him a text that read, “Enjoy every moment of it. You deserve to be there, and whatever happens today, know you did your best.”

“We felt like we had completed a circle,” said Deon.

To recognize his acheivements and inspire young people to follow their dreams, in June of 2014, a committee of key people honored Kippy by naming the street in front of Sweetwater High School, “Kippy Brown Way.”

“It’s quite an honor,” said Kippy. “Usually people are deceased before they name something after them. I am just happy I am here to see it!”

Brown isn’t the only one from his family to make it to the NFL. His brother, Gerald Brown, is a Running Back Coach for the Atlanta Falcons. His brother Sam Brown lives and works as a detective for the Knoxville Police Department and coaches football at Catholic High School. They all owe a lot to Coach Berrong.

A Visit in Seattle With Seattle Seahawks Coach Kippy Brown and His Beautiful Wife Deon.

A

fter doing the story on Kippy Brown’s great career, we were invited by the Brown’s to visit Seattle and go to a Seahawks game. This was an opportunity we could not pass up.

Especially since we love telling stories and this would be the perfect docuumentary.

Deon made reservations for us at the Seahawks Hotel. The evening we arrived in Seattle we were invited to the Brown’s Home. It was located on a lake about ten minutes outside of Seattle.

Kippy and his wife, Deon, showed us that Southern Hospitality doesn’t change with your zip code. We arrived at their home in Seattle with all of the equipment necessary to conduct an interview and shoot a documentary.

We were met with a huge spread of appetizers, even a football shaped cake that read “Welcome to Seattle.” Kippy’s daughter and a few of her friends also joined us for dinner.

After a wonderful meal we played cards, and then someone said something about line dancing and the entire group started dancing.

We didn’t have time to shoot anything!

Deon had gifts of clear bags to use to enter the stadium with lots of Seahawk fare so we would be ready for the game. Kippy presented us with Superbowl signed caps!

Kippy and Deon are wonderful hosts and it is easy to see how this would help in recruiting players. We could not have felt more welcome.

Tour of the Seattle Seahawks Practice Facility Touring the Seahawks’ practice facility was an honor, it was exciting to see Kippy in his element! The main lobby opens into a two-story atrium with a custom sign that reads “Passion, Character, 12th Man, Excellence”; reminding everyone who walks through the doors what the Seahawks are all about.

We met several of the Seahawks Players who commented on Kippy’s “Do Right” coaching style, a motto that he learned from playing for King Berrong, his high school football coach. Kippy invited us to watch a practice session from the sidelines, which was an amazing experience. He encourages and praises his players.

Leaving the practice facility, we walked by a large billboard with several different pictures from the previous game. The Seahawks photograph the best plays from the game and display them for coaches, players, and visitors to see.

All Access Game Day! We were also invited to watch the Seahawks play a regular season game, when they played the New York Giants.

Before the game, we were able to be on the sidelines with the players and reporters Erin Andrews and Troy Aikman! Our guys even got to go into the locker room.

After the game, we were invited back to the Brown house for even more food.

Deon and Kippy really are the best at Southern Hospitality.

Deon pulled out the scrapbooks and shared just how hard it was for the both of them. She said, “Kippy would feel sick when the papers in Memphis started writing articles about whether a black could win.” He would ask her, “Can we do this?” her answer was always, “Kip, we can do this.”

Kippy retired this year and is currently living in Nashville. We look forward to seeing him on the sidelines cheering on the Vols, wearing his Superbowl Ring!

Unfortunately, vision screenings don’t detect all vision and eye disorders. Dr. Brent Fry, owner of Premier Eyecare located in Farragut, recommends that parents of young children bring in their child for their first eye exam around the age of 9 months. However, the blue light that falls just inside the visible spectrum is also a high energy wavelength of light that has been shown to cause damage to the retina.

The hand-held electronic devices that have become a way of life for most of us put a blue light source only a few inches from our eyes. To address this, Dr. Fry prescribes a blue light blocking, anti-reflective treatment for all of the lenses that he prescribes. H

olding a steaming hotdog dripping with mustard and relish in one hand and a giant Coke in the other, you traverse a dim corridor. Suddenly, you come upon a bright opening. A sense of adrenaline grips you, and you slowly make your way through the threshold.

You emerge to a sea of bright orange, hear the roar of over 100,000 cheering fans and breathe in an air of pure excitement. Slowly your eyes descend to the surface, finally settling on the 50 yard line, where a giant orange T proclaims so boldly that this is Vol country.

Neyland Stadium: it has been the pride of Knoxville since it was first constructed in 1921. Since then, it has hosted some of the Volunteers’ greatest victories, with six national title banners hanging gloriously over

the far side of the stadium. All in all, it cannot be argued that Neyland Stadium itself is the centerpiece of Knoxville. Yet what makes it so grand? What makes the experience of Neyland so unique and wonderful? The field, of course. With that perfectly mowed grass, the incredibly precise upkeep and that all-too-familiar checkerboard finish in each end zone. This is where Darren Seybold and his talented staff come in. As the Director of Sports Services, Darren has been overseeing the maintenance of the field for five years.

He has had twenty years of professional field management experience, ten of which was spent in Major League Baseball. We had a rare chance to talk with Darren and get a personal glimpse into his job and the challenges he and his staff face on a daily basis.

Q: In 1994, University officials decided to do away with turf and put in the natural grass surface we see today.

Why was this decision made?

A: Well, as turf developed, Sports Service Directors like myself began to see some major flaws. One of the main downsides of having turf is the heat.

Turf fields hold an enormous amount of heat, so the players feel a higher temperature than the fans, and they’re the ones working. Also, turf grass tends to not give as easily as natural grass.

This leads to more injuries and twisted ankles. I’d take a divot from a player stepping too hard over a sprained ankle any day, and at the end of the day, it’s about making sure the players stay safe.

Q: What kind of grass is going to be used on the field for the upcoming 2015-16 season?

A: The grass we are using for this season is Bermuda 419. It is as top-of-the-line as it gets.

Q: We have seen games where the rain is coming down, yet the field doesn’t seem to be affected as much as it should. To what do you attribute this success?

A: Many people don’t know this, but the base of the field is actually made of sand.

While this gives us some challenges in other areas, coupled with the field’s design, it does a spectacular job of draining the field.

Q: What are some of the major challenges you and your staff face maintaining this field?

A: After a game is over, we don’t waste a second. If you have ever been to a UT home game, you’ll see us fixing up the field before some of the players make it to the locker room. The field has to be mowed about five times per week during the season and repainted after every game. We also have state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, which monitors moisture, fertility and other factors that we have to constantly be aware of and regulate.

(Amazingly, we came to find out that Darren and his staff of only 33 are responsible for not only Neyland, but all thirteen of the major sports facilities at the University of Tennessee, including Baseball, Softball, Track and others.)

Q: What do you think of the fans here in Knoxville?

A: Well, let me tell you. When you are talking about big-name schools in the SEC (and trust me, I know, I grew up in Alabama and got my degree at Mississippi State), everyone always claims they have the best fans. I can say without a doubt that the fans here in Knoxville, Tennessee, are by far the best fans in college football. Period.

Q: Is it a daunting task managing one of the greatest fields in college football, considering the pride that UT fans have for their football program?

A: We understand and share the passion that this city has for its Volunteers, and we work hard to make sure that the facilities are ready and safe for our players. We know that Neyland is what matters to people. It’s always been the standard where football stadiums are concerned, and we are going to make sure it stays that way.

tudio 135 opened its doors February 1st, 2014. It’s unassuming when you first walk up, but just like finding a pearl inside of an oyster, Studio 135 is the hidden gem of Farragut. With a friendly, eclectic atmosphere, you’re welcomed by a blend of fantastic fragrances and elegant decor.

Jessica Moore, owner and head stylist, had been working as a hairdresser for 15 years at another salon before her husband, Kevin Moore, encouraged her to open her own boutique. “I told her she was good enough to open her own salon, and she finally listened to me,” says Kevin, as he gives his wife a playful wink. So far Jessica has greatly enjoyed having her own business, and there is a confident air about her to show for it. In fact, there is such an easy camaraderie between Kevin, Pam McCoy, another stylist, and herself that you just can’t help but laugh and join in. Perhaps this is what gives the boutique its relaxing atmosphere. The music is cheerful, and

the stylists are friendly and easy to talk to, putting any uncertainties to rest.

Kevin had his own part in opening the salon by designing and decorating the whole interior, giving it its vintage artisan feel. “I’ve always enjoyed doing this, decorating a room, and I wanted to make my wife happy, so I tried to just keep it elegant and simple.”

Jessica won’t let him be so modest. “He has a real eye for this sort of thing, designing spaces and furniture. He really is quite talented.”

Indeed the entire space exudes an air of calmness and charm. It’s a very welcoming space that feels large and open with vintage pieces such as lanterns dangling from the ceiling and an antique oversized lamp that resembles an old camera tripod. There are also personal touches, such as fresh white roses in a beautiful vase in the reception area and artwork depicting men’s facial hair trends. It seamlessly blends rustic charm and

modern elegance with pieces like a wood and iron coffee table and sleek white chairs with metallic pillows for the reception. A light hardwood accents the clean black salon chairs and mirrors, giving the whole place a clean and high-end look.

This dynamic duo is very excited about their new salon and has bright plans for the future. This includes Kevin creating more vintage-inspired decorative pieces to sell in the salon and hiring more stylists to join Jessica and Pam. “The hardest part of any business is building clientele, but Jessica’s had many clients follow her here, and we are steadily growing. We’re working hard to provide a quality experience for our clients,” says Kevin. Jessica agrees, saying, “I want to make sure that all of my clients are happy and well taken care of; that’s very important to me.”

The location of Jessica’s studio is also something Jessica put a lot of thought into.

“There isn’t another hair salon this far into Farragut, so we’re a lot closer for people who don’t want to drive so far to get their hair cut.” Kevin agrees and talks about how close they are to the school just down the road, “during the school year this parking lot is always full of parents waiting to pick their kids up. It’s a very busy place and we are in the perfect spot for them to come in and get a hair cut after school has let out.”

Who Is Harold Black?

W

ho is Harold Black? The thought resonated through my mind as I sat waiting for him in a local Aubrey’s, the meeting place for our interview. I had read a brief biography about him: he received his PhD from Ohio State University, he was Chairman of Finance at UT and he was one of the first African-American students to attend the University of Georgia. This brief and perhaps uninspired search of Dr. Black’s past led this reporter to overlook the significance of this astounding man’s life, a fact that I am rather ashamed to admit. Finally, I was introduced to Dr. Black, pleasantries were exchanged and we sat. As Dr. Black spoke, I began to pick up on his spectacular intelligence, his passion, but most of all, his accompanying attitude. The conversation that ensued, a two-hour discussion on Dr. Black’s past, his experiences at the university and his progress since, left me utterly astounded.

Indeed it took me many days after the interview to begin writing about it, days to process what he told me and truly attempt to understand what it was like to be an

African-American college student at the University of Georgia in the ‘60s. Now I will attempt as best as I am capable of portraying Dr. Black’s words in writing; I sincerely hope they will do him justice.

Dr. Harold Black was always the inquisitive sort, and it is with his inquisitive nature that we begin our story. In his younger years, Dr. Black was fascinated with reading the books he found in the “colored” library. He would spend hours filling his head with information on this and that, and for a time, that was enough. After a while, however, young Harold wanted a more diverse selection of reading, so one day, he decided to go check out a book at the main library in his town.

“Back then, all the neighborhoods were segregated,” said Dr. Black, “and when I went to check out a book at the white library, they wouldn’t let me and told me to leave.” Now it is common knowledge that in the early ‘60s the segregated United States was beginning to unsegregate, and with the Civil Rights Movement in full swing, the community saw the library’s refusal of Harold Black as a means

to protest, and rightly so. “ I didn’t mean to start any protest,” admitted Dr. Black. “All I wanted was something new to read.”

In 1961, the University of Georgia, which had since been an all-white school, was ordered to desegregate immediately by the United States Federal Court. Harold Black took this opportunity without hesitation to enroll.

“My brother was going to Purdue, and I was thinking of following in his footsteps. That’s what my father wanted me to do. But when I heard the school was desegregating, I jumped at the opportunity to follow my own path in a school which wasn’t too far away from home.” Dr. Black was one of four African-American students to be admitted as freshmen at the University of Georgia in 1962. “I remember my first day of orientation, how I walked alone down the rows of students in the gymnasium.

I heard the muttering as I walked by and finally found my seat. When I sat down, the entire row of white students got up and sat elsewhere.”

Luckily for the young Dr. Black, there were a couple of students who were much more accommodating. “The students in front of me that day turned around and talked to me, even as the students around them muttered their disapproval.” That conversation sparked friendships that have lasted Dr. Black a lifetime. “To me, those guys who befriended me are the real heroes. I knew I wasn’t welcome, but they went out of their way to be my friend and sacrifice their likability. That took true courage.”

Though Dr. Black had made friends, his hardships continued in the hostile environment of the University of Georgia’s racial onslaught. Many of the students made it difficult for Harold Black, making it very clear he was not welcome at their university. His window was busted out on more than one occasion his freshman year. Perhaps the greatest atrocity happened when he decided to go for a swim in the University’s swimming pool. “When I had finished swimming, all the students were told to get out of the pool immediately.

Once they had done so, they proceeded to drain the pool of all the water and refill it.”

When I asked Dr. Black how, as a young man, he could stand to take such unimaginable racism, he smiled and unexpectedly answered, “Look, I had a great time in college. In fact, I defy anyone to have had a better experience than me. I made lifelong friends and had experiences I would never trade for anything. All those students, the ones who gave me such a hard time, never had any true power over me. I knew that, and by the end of my time at the University of Georgia, they knew that, too.”

Today, Dr. Harold Black lives in West Knoxville. Since he graduated from Georgia, he has gone on to have a prominent career in the realms of economics and finance.

He is responsible for the development and implementation of the statistical analysis tool, (ASAT), used to analyze racial discrimination in lending in 1974, and still used today.

He has been honored on numerous occasions for his contributions to economic theory and his incredible intellect. He has most recently served as Chairman of Finance at the niversit of Tennessee for the first ears of a 24 year tenure.

Though it is right to honor Dr. Black for his contributions to academia, above all he must be honored for his bravery and his unrelenting attitude toward injustice in our world, though he humbly feels this is out of place. His profound and unique perspectives have the power to produce the kind of attitude in each individual that can truly bring about positive change.

So who is Harold Black, you ask? He is not only an inspiration, he is a model of true heroism in a world that was terribly unjust, and he is one of the most virtuous men I have ever met. It was my absolute pleasure to have had the opportunity to speak with him and hear his amazing story.

Tsali Notch Vineyards The largest muscadine vineyard in the state might also be the most beautiful!

As September approaches, there is a buzz of activity at Tsali Notch Vineyard in East Tennessee. When the muscadine grapes are ripe, it is time to begin the harvest. The vineyard, named after the Cherokee leader, is home to 35 acres of muscadine grapes, and sits on over 200 acres of beautiful farmland. Tsali Notch is the largest muscadine vineyard in Tennessee, and welcomes beginners, wine makers, families and friends to join in the “U-Pick” harvest.

The Tsali Notch property also hosts events such as weddings, receptions, reunions and other gatherings. The farmland sits in a beautiful valley overlooking the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest. There is a restored Party Barn for larger functions, and The Jackson Lounge for a more intimate setting; a recently refurbished 19th century farmhouse that faces the surrounding hills and 6,700 grapevines in the valley.

The Tsali Notch Hiwassee White Wine took home a gold medal, and the French Broad Rose received a silver medal. Last year, the Sparkling Muscadine won a gold medal in the University of Tennessee Wines of the South event.

Cox is looking forward to an excellent muscadine harvest this year, and a few additions to the vineyard. Planning continues for a new building that will expand their event spaces and accommodate the growing demand from wedding and event planners.

The idyllic farmland attracts more than muscadine pickers, and the newest addition will hold over 250 guests in a climate controlled building that displays the best view of the property.

Tsali Notch opens their doors to travellers from all over the country, but Cox enjoys keeping the vineyard’s success local. When the City of Sweetwater approached him to co-host the National Muscadine Festival, it was a perfect match. The Festival occurs from September 26th-27th at the peak of the muscadine harvest. This year marks the 5th annual festival, and includes muscadine sampling and picking, with a hayride tour and tractor show.

This September, the Festival welcomes the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta, which raises funds to benefit CASA Monroe. The 20+ Balloons will set off at dusk each night of the festival, lighting up the vineyard in a beautifully colorful glow. In addition to the Balloon Fiesta, guests can expect to find a variety of food, fun, live music, and of course - the best muscadine wine in the state.

Family Fun at the Annual Muscadine Festival in Historic Downtown Sweetwater Written By Halea Lingerfelt

A

merica’s First Grape, the Muscadine. The wild fruit leaves one with a taste that is nearly impossible to replicate or find elsewhere.

The tart but sweet flavor the plump grape produces is one that leaves everyone wanting just one more bite. Although many have fond memories of the fruit, I doubt that many have memories quite like the Muscadine Festival stompers. When this sticky fruit is all over your body in the name of fun, it is quite impossible to forget.

From September 25-27, 2015, The National Muscadine Festival will again take place in Historic Downtown Sweetwater, Tennessee, located just 40 minutes south of West Knoxville. The event, sponsored by the Sweetwater Merchants and Property Owners Association, is one that draws in massive crowds every year. An art show and activities at Tsali Notch Vineyard, the state’s largest muscadine vineyard that offers incredible panoramic views of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National park, will also take place at this year’s event. 20 Balloons!

I

n conjunction with the National Muscadine Festival, the Muscadine Balloon Fiesta benefitting CASA Monroe will take place Friday and Saturday at Tsali Notch Vineyard in Madisonville.

More than 20 hot air balloons gather on the 200-acre grounds to wow guests and provide a fun family atmosphere all while supporting a worthy charity. The Hot Air Balloon Festival that took place at Hiwassee College has moved to the beautiful grounds of Tsali Notch Vineyard. Food, tethered hot air balloon rides, craft vendors, kids zone, as well as a mesmerizing balloon glow at dusk each night, weather permitting, is scheduled.

Live music begins Friday at 3:30pm with the Hinckley Brothers performing before the balloon glow from 6:30-8:30pm. On Saturday live music begins at 2:30pm followed by Bo Carey and the Early Morning String Dusters at 4:30pm. The Hinckley Brothers will again take the stage on Saturday night from 6:30-8:30pm to perform for the crowd. Oneday admission to the Fiesta benefitting CASA Monroe is $5 for children 12 and under and $10 for adults. A two-day pass to the Fiesta is $8 for children 12 and under and $15 for adults. A BLAST from the Past.

While MasterCraft is constantly innovating and reinventing itself to ensure they’re the first to introduce “the next big thing” to the luxury boat market, the company has a tremendous soft spot for its colorful, bold and nostalgic past. “Recently, we tracked down and bought the very first MasterCraft ever built,” said Jay Povlin, VP of sales and marketing for MasterCraft.

“Once we had it in our possession, it was completely restored. That boat represents the foundation and legacy of MasterCraft.

The company has grown from that one boat to many different models. With our

current product development strategy, boating enthusiasts will continue to see new models and redesigns on a regular basis. But it all started with that first boat.”

When the company moved from Maryville to Vonore in 1993, taking over an empty Sea Ray plant on the serene shores of Tellico Lake, it meant big changes for both the company and the community. As MasterCraft grew and achieved notoriety, other manufactures took notice of the area. As other players and skilled crafts people moved in to set up shop in Vonore, the area soon became known as the little “Detroit of boat building.”

MasterCraft can claim many “firsts” in the industry. In fact, many of the standard features we see on boats today made their first appearance on a MasterCraft vessel decades before, including a dual speedometer for tracking speeds more accurately, the first swim platform, the first triple fins, the first fiberglass seats, the first electronic fuel injection engine, the first adjustable driver’s seat and the addition of the Gen 2 Surf System in order to develop the perfect wake for wakesurfing.

Keeping Vonore from going the way of Detroit is another matter. Today, MasterCraft holds an enviable and growing prominence in the luxury boat market with a loyal base of lifetime customers, admirers, imitators and aspirants. But like many boat manufactures, the market was not kind to MasterCraft during the last recession. Discretionary spending on big-ticket items such as luxury boats took a steep dive. In response to the downturn in the fall of 2008, the company was forced to close the factory and layoff more than 600 workers, reducing its workforce to a mere 50 employees.

In order to survive the economic storm and remerge as a competitive force, MasterCraft turned to Wayzata Investment Partners, who purchased the company in 2009. With the support of Wayzata, MasterCraft has bolstered its investment in new products, facilities and personnel.

In 2012, the company appointed Terry McNew as the new president and CEO. McNew and his team spearheaded a bold new product plan that has not only taken root, it’s now bearing fruit.

“Our production schedule continues to increase. Our employees are working overtime and we still can’t keep up with

retail demand,” said Mr. Povlin. “Plus, we continue to launch new products that are selling at a remarkable pace.”

Mr. Shane Chittum, chief operating officer at MasterCraft, added “Given the growth of the market, we are forecasting production increases that will require us to hire more people this year.”

While the company won’t reveal the exact hiring numbers for this year and next, officials are happy to report an expected 40 percent increase in production to keep up with growing demand and the introduction of new products.

Making (NEW) Waves.

We wish we could report that MasterCraft’s production increase is the beginning of a robust, industry-wide recovery for the overall boat market. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case.

According to industry market analysts, the traditional boating market that the majority of manufacturers serve continues to contract. Meanwhile, the luxury segment occupied by MasterCraft and several of their competitors grew by more than 10 percent last year, and is estimated to grow by roughly that same amount this year. According to MasterCraft, there are several key factors at work allowing them to grow and increase valuable market share while other boat manufactures are struggling to stay afloat.

“The consumer has totally embraced wake surfing, and the market is heading in that direction. Boaters are impressed by what they see people doing on the wake behind a MasterCraft. They want to do that, and you can’t surf behind a stern-drive boat, as you could cause yourself serious harm,” said Povlin.

Another area driving sales is an aging marketplace that wants more choice. While water sports used to be primarily a youth, family and sports market, today’s water sports are truly becoming an intergenerational activity. From behind wake boats, Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and kids who can’t handle the more physically demanding sports, now have a wider range of options, including wakeboarding, wakesurfing, waterskiing, kneeboarding and tubing.

Finally, according to Mr. Povlin, MasterCraft boats get noticed more where other, more traditional recreational boats simply blend in. “If a customer is spending the amount of money some of our boats cost, it had better be cool. We purposely design them to stand out above the crowd.”

Besides offering the ultimate in power, precision and prestige, MasterCraft has always been determined to be the best-looking boat on the water. Wakeboarding Vs.

WAKESURFING

While wakesurfing is similar to wake boarding, there are some profound differences between the two sports.

Wakeboarding combines waterskiing, snowboarding and surfing, using a pull rope, lots of speed and dramatic acrobatics. In wakesurfing, the “surf” is created by the boat's wake that mimics the shape and feel of an actual ocean wave. After mounting the wave by use of a towrope, wakesurfers drop the rope and ride the steep face below the wave's peak in a fashion similar to ocean surfing— except the wave is perpetual.

The Gen 2 Surf System is engineered around four key factors that define surfability: hull displacement, additional ballast, shaping devices and software to control and maximize each component. Mastercraft is the only manufacturer with a customized solution to enhance the wake for each hull.

MasterCraft is concentrating their efforts on the core recreational tow-sports enthusiast, along with two models for the hardcore enthusiast, including the XStar for wakeboard and newly redesigned ProStar for water ski, jump and trick skiers and wakeboarders. Additionally, MasterCraft has just released NXT, which has a retail base price of $50,000. While that is less than many of their boats, this new entry-level vessel puts the possibility of owning a MasterCraft well within reach for many boating enthusiasts.

A

h, the simple twang of a guitar string, radiating soft tones that seem to transform the world around us and serenade us with sweet melodies that drive our imagination and guide our dreams. There are those whose love and passion for the guitar is so strong that it becomes a part of who they are. Here in our city of Knoxville, some of these guitar-aficionados have gathered together to create a group of individuals who share that passion. Founded in 1971 by local guitar maestro and composer Larry Long, the Knoxville Guitar Society is one of the oldest guitar societies in the United States. Larry

created the society with one goal in mind; to bring together talented musicians that brought the culture and joy of classical guitar to the Knoxville area.

Today, 44 years later, Larry’s successor and former student Dr. Mike Smith continues that tradition, bringing some of the finest talents from across the globe to perform locally in our humbled city of Knoxville. What is even more impressive is the manner in which these performances are held. “Almost all of our performances are not amplified,” says Dr. Smith, “we rely on the acoustics of the venue to create an ambience that cannot be replicated.” This style of performance offers those who appreciate true talent an immersion into the musical depth of other musicians. These musicians are hand picked by Dr. Smith and his other board members, almost all of whom are local guitar

instructors. In fact, one of the Knoxville Guitar Society’s main goals is to promote classical and fingerstyle forms of guitar playing to the youth of East Tennessee.

For many of these members including Dr. Smith himself and Robert Burleson, a current member of the Society, the guitar has the ability to change lives in a positive way, and they wish to share their love of the instrument with the community.

The Knoxville Guitar Society certainly has had a history of success, having brought in an abundance of talented musicians over the years. Ana Vidovic, a young Croatian woman who graced us with a performance several years ago, is now considered one of the finest symphony soloists in the world.

Tommy Emmanuel, an Australian wonder and two-time Grammy nominee, was another treasure, performing for the

it’s summertime, and here in east Tennessee, we have the luxury of some of the most scenic and beautiful summers in the country. Not only are we blessed with breathtaking landscapes, this beauty seems to extend in every direction, occasionally taking even the most seasoned local’s breath away. To

Just a short drive south from Farragut, this 43 mile National Scenic Byway is one of the most beautiful drives and landscapes to behold that truly accentuates our beautiful home of East Tennessee. The

The Cherohala Skyway was opened and dedicated in 1996. The road has been designated a National Scenic Byway. The road cost over 100 million dollars to construct. The Cherohala Skyway crosses through the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee and the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. The name “Cherohala” comes from the names of the two National Forests. “Cher from the Cherokee and “ahala” from the Nantahala. The Cherohala Skyway connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee with Robbinsville, North Carolina and is about 50 miles long. The Cherohala Skyway is a wide, paved 2-laned road maintained by the Tennessee Department of Transportation and the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

The elevations range from 900 feet above sea level at the Tellico River in Tennessee to over 5,400 feet above sea level at the Tennessee-North Carolina state line at Haw Knob. Visit www.cherohala.org for more information.

The Visitors Center in Tellico Plains has information on the great places to visit in the area and the Charles Hall Museum next door is a loaded with history.

First stop on the Cherohala...The Charles Hall Museum. Take 5,000 square feet of local history, with plenty of antiques, firearms, coins and telephones that will transport you back to yesteryear. When

you are finished exploring the past, you will want to stop at the visitor’s center for a free map. We sure to see the new black bear exhibit that will be on permanent display at the Cherohala Skyway Visitor Center. If you plan on hiking the trails off the Skyway, make sure you have appropriate supplies, there is no cellular phone coverage on the Skyway.

Winding roads, steep inclines, and breathtaking views welcome drivers along the Cherohala. Whether it’s the abundance of wildlife, the brilliant colors of the season, or the incredible views, the Cherohala offers all visitors a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
