Publisher’s blog The long list of lady ambassadors in Thailand says a lot about this country

I

t is highly likely that Thailand currently hosts more lady ambassadors than any other country on this planet – an amazing 26 in total comprising 14 based here and at least another 12 based elsewhere but responsible for Thailand. Why this should be is not clear, but for many this large female representation reflects very well on Thailand, a country widely applauded for its tolerant attitudes and ready acceptance of a changing world. In a similar vein, it should be noted that several male ambassadors here are openly gay and have already experienced a typically warm welcome from their hosts. According to sources, the number of lady ambassadors could actually increase in the next year or so, a gratifying development. Among local diplomats, it is generally agreed that the female contingent is just as dedicated as their male counterparts, and perhaps even more so. Those interested in Thailand’s diplomatic circles can learn more from this month’s excellent story by Maxmilian Wechsler that appears on page 8 of The BigChilli.

The Chinese are coming in force to the EEC

T

he growing power and influence of China in Thailand is reflected in no uncertain terms by the announcement that Charoen Pokphand through its property arm CP Land Plc is joining forces with Guangxi Construction Engineering Group to set up an industrial estate in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) that targets Chinese-speaking investors. It is estimated that the 60 billion baht project will create some 20,000 jobs within six years. Companies from Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China are expected to locate businesses there. The EEC has already attracted the likes of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, whose owner Jack Ma has committed some 11 billion baht to the project. Rivals JD.com and Tencent are also reportedly interested in investing. Some observers of the EEC project have

4

TheBigChilli

suggested that one of its shortcomings overall will be a shortage of labour. This will be easily solved if these Chinese-speaking investors are permitted to import workers from their respective countries. Meanwhile, many of the finer details about the EEC project have yet to be revealed, including the exact location of the three “new towns” that will be built within the Easter Seaboard. EEC management has said it is withholding such information to “avoid land speculation.”

Pub investors seek the right sites

S

ince the closure of Molly Malone’s, unquestionably one of Bangkok’s most successful and popular pubs, two would-be successors have appeared – Shenanigans on Patpong/Suriwongse and O’Malleys on Silom in the former Pintsman premises. Both will go some way in filling Molly’s vacuum, but there’s still no shortage of potential investors looking for suitable sites for a pub in the Convent Road area. Unfortunately, such sites are simply not available right now. Watch this space for updates.

More car parks are NOT needed

P

lans to build an underground car park in the busy Ratchadamnoen Road area of Bangkok are being mooted by the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy. In one way, such a project makes eminent sense; this part of Bangkok suffers badly from a shortage of parking space. Parked vehicles belonging to people working here pack the roads and on occasions, the sidewalks. Seen from another angle, additional parking space is illogical as it will merely attract even more cars into the area. And in one of the city’s congested districts, this doesn’t make sense at all. Indeed, The BigChilli has longed argued that car parks, other than for residential buildings, should not be allowed in new commercial projects as they encourage addition traffic. We would go one step further and advocate severe restrictions on the number of parking spaces currently available on roads like Ratchadamnoen.

Coffee WORKS Dale Lee, Founder IF you’ve ever enjoyed a cup of coffee in Bangkok, there’s a good chance the beans that make it so delicious come from CoffeeWORKS, a company owned by an American from Michigan named Dale Lee. Operating since 1995, CoffeeWORKS is today one of the top three suppliers of coffee and related equipment in Thailand. Its 800-plus customers include a long list of major corporations with coffee-thirsty staff, many of the country’s best known hotels as well as specialist coffee shops, cafés and chain outlets. Among them are Dean & Deluca, W Hotel, McCafe outlets at McDonald’s Thailand, and Bluecup Coffee by S&P. www.coffeeworks.co.th

Beervana Aaron Grieser and Brian Bartusch, Founders TWO fates collided when home-brewers and beer fanatics Aaron Grieser and Brian Bartusch met at a food festival in Spring of 2012. Realizing their mutual love of all things craft beer, the two joined forces to create Thailand’s first craft beer importing company, Beervana. It can be safely said that Beervana started a movement. Whereas only a few years ago Bangkok was a virtual beer desert, today the city is awash with great craft beer, including many imported by new beer distributors following in Beervana’s footsteps. www.beervana.asia

Tea and Fruits Ido Berger, Founder TEA and Fruits was launched in Thailand by Ido Berger in 2013 and in less than a year was present on the shelves of five of the seven leading supermarket chains in the country. A unique concept, Tea and Fruits presents users with two bags – one filled with tea, the other with a mix of dried fruits – and these are used together to make a two-in-one drink experience. “We call it tea and dessert in the same cup,” says Ido. www.teaandfruits.com

Siam Organic Neil and Palmmy, Founders PEETACHAI Dejkraisak (Neil) and Pornthida Wongphatharakul (Palmmy), journey began in 2011, when they learned that while Thailand is the second largest rice exporter in the world, Thai farmers were among the poorest in the world, earning just $0.40/day, as a result of low yields, rising costs and inefficient agricultural systems. With a desire to create a sustainable, scalable and long-term solution to this problem that could bring both great social and financial impact to the farmers, they founded Siam Organic, a social enterprise that works with small-scale farmers to alleviate poverty through innovative organic products with global appeal. Siam Organic was the first Thai company to ring the closing bell at NASDAQ and now packs and distributes their rice internationally, allowing them to connect over 1,800 small-scale farmers in rural Thailand with markets around the world. www.jasberry.net

Travel Cobble stone pavements in the narrow alleys of the Basque villages.

A

fter almost a quarter of a century, predominantly covering the slopes in the Himalayans and the hills in Asia, the 25th anniversary ride was meant to be special one and the first time to Europe, exploring Spain’s Basque Country of the Pyrenees under the slogan ‘Making Basque Great Again’. The Basque country as it stands today is known as ‘The Autonomous Unified Basque Country’, consisting of the North and South Provinces. The North is controlled by the French and the South by the Spanish. Initially a little reserved towards foreigners, the locals are very proud of their identity and have their own Basque national flag. Basques have fought for their land, their culture, and their pride. Their traditions are alive and flourishing today. The widely spoken Basque language is a language with no known linguistic relatives as it is unrelated to any of the other languages of Europe.

On top of the ridge crossing the Spain/France border enjoying a stunning view over the French peaks of the Pyrenees before starting a long bumpy downhill.

On single tracks through autumn colored forests.

Altar of the Basque Roncesvalles Church and Monastery.

Like on all the earlier rides the basic concept was simple: a daily good workout in beautiful surroundings, preferably cycling single trails; simple accommodation and reasonable food. However there is no compromise on the amber beverage: ‘enough chilled beer for everybody every evening!’ Attention to detailed logistics therefore is an absolute requirement. Only a few members of the original group presently still live in Taiwan since some have returned to their

home countries, mainly the US, or have found new opportunities in China or the Asian region. Thus flights carrying the bikes touched down in the northern Spanish city of Bilbao from all over the world. In order to get acclimatized and check the equipment, a ‘warm up ride’ in the little known desert of ‘Bardenas Reales de Navarra’ was staged before getting into the mountains and onto the Basque highlands. While altitude this time was no issue, the steep gradients still did require endurance (on the up) and technical skills (on the down). Usually starting in the morning on dirt roads up a valley, trails soon led into the lush woods mainly following single tracks through autumn-coloured oak tree forests. Living in the tropics for so many years and being accustomed to an almost continuous sight of ‘green nature’ made experiencing the autumn season even more special for some. Above the tree line, open grasslands covered the slopes where healthy looking sheep, cattle, and horses were feeding on the juicy and nutritious highland grass. Alpine flowers added bright, colourful spots. Breathing the clean fresh air, no longer a given in many of Asia’s cities, felt good.

Travel

To reach the Spain/France border required a long, big push uphill. On day 4 of the trip, a long valley ended at a very steep, grass-covered slope which was not rideable, requiring an ascent by serous pushing of the bikes uphill for almost 2 hours. Reaching the top of the ridge we were surprised by a low 2-wire fence indicating the Spanish/French border. After lifting the bikes over and enjoying the far view towards the French peaks, we enjoyed a long, bumpy downhill finally ending up at an asphalt road only to start a steep serpentine uphill to the Col de Larrau (one of the passes on the 2007 Tour de France) and returning back onto Spanish territory again. Weather can change fast from calm and sparkling sunshine to heavy wind and horizontal rain. However, we were lucky most of the time as we got caught in the misty rain only once. The overall pleasant fall temperatures and the low humidity contributed to the enjoyment of the daily rides. The favorable climatic conditions, however, did not ease the pressure on some softer body part caused by the extended hours in the saddle. While the majority of the rides followed animal trails, we also came across some well-marked and popular walking trails with numerous enthusiastic trekkers. These were pilgrims on the ‘Way of St. James’, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It leads from France through northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela over almost 1050 kilometers and thus is part of the ‘First Cultural Route of Europe’. Many of the small villages we passed boasted churches

and monasteries dating back many centuries. One is Roncesvalles, which offers a special daily pilgrim’s mass. In addition, it is a symbolic place, whose fame crossed all Europe in the Middle Ages due, above all, to the songs about the deeds of the figure of Charlemagne and his nephew Roldan in the epic battle of Roncesvalles.

with warm croissants for breakfast, baguettes with cured ham and air dried salami and fruit for lunch, tapas and olives, fresh salad, vegetables, and meat rounded off with tasty cheese accompanied by local wine made up dinner. The bottom line: Spanish food is a great treat with absolutely no danger of ‘Delhi Belly’, which in the lesser developed parts of the globe, is not an abnormal experience during similar adventures in earlier years. Although the rides were a challenge, no bike breakdown was recorded. Even the number of punctures was below average. Most importantly, besides a few minor bruises caused by some spectacular stunts ‘over the handle bars’ no serious accident occurred. The final day was a stunningly beautiful ride on the cliffs above the Atlantic. The far view into the Bay of Biscay with the white sands of the distant French city of Biarritz in the North, the contours of the Pyrenees towards the north east, and the dark

The ‘Biking Brotherhood’ at the start at Bardenas Reales de Navarra. Cobblestone pavements in the narrow alleys of the villages were lined with rustic houses decorated with beautiful flowers in front of their windows. Compared to earlier trips where simple homestays, dormitories, or tents hosted the group, this time cozy family guesthouses provided comfortable shelter during the nights. While the food on the previous rides was meant primarily to provide the required energy to compensate for the daily calorie consumption, this time we felt really spoilt by local delicacies: Freshly brewed coffee

blue waters with white crests washing the coast of northern Spain below us was overwhelming. Ending up in the old historic part of ‘San Juan’, a small fishing village outside San Sebastian, where the waiting beer was cold and plentiful, was like a ‘grand finale’. While enjoying the local amber brew ‘Keler’ all reflected on another memorable week of physical workout and enjoyment in a very scenic, diversified, and interesting part of the world; celebrating unique brotherly friendship. ON ON to more foreign shores in the upcoming years!

Education: Making The Right Choice for your child

O

NE of the most important responsibilities a parent has is to choose the right school for their child. From the moment they start their journey in education, it is vital to ensure that they have the best possible opportunities to enable them to be successful in their future careers/lives. For over 50 years Traill International School has been the right choice for generations of successful students. We deliver a world-renowned British curriculum education in a caring and supportive atmosphere. Over the years we have built an enviable reputation on academic results and awards but at the same time we have stayed true to the school’s founding principle that every

student matters equally, regardless of their ability. This simply means that each of our students has a personalised education plan, which allows us to offer increased stimulus or support to students, depending on their needs. In order to do this, we maintain an overall student to teacher ratio of 8 to 1, which allows our highly qualified and experienced teachers the opportunity to work individually with students during lesson time to work towards their own personal peak of attainment. Another extremely important contribution to the success of our students is the strong bond of support which is evident throughout the school. We care for our students like extended family and we encourage the students to treat each other the same. In this nurturing

environment, self confidence flourishes and students are able to enjoy their studies and other school activities. As part of our ongoing development and review scheme we asked this year’s graduating students to let us know about their experience of life at Traill. All of them talked about the support and encouragement they received from teachers and fellow students and how this empowered them and drove them on to succeed. If you want your child to be part of the next generation of successful students to benefit from an outstanding education at Traill International School, book a visit online via our website www. traillschool.com or telephone our admissions team on 027188779.

Guest review by

Enoteca, a worthy anniversary venue

Bangkok Beefsteak & Burgundy

T

HIS was the eleventh anniversary of our first lunch at Enoteca and once again we have to thank the Enoteca team for a warm welcome and great food. I had requested a reprise of some favourite dishes from menus of the past and was well pleased with the outcome. A tasty amuse bouche (melon and parma ham, a macaroon and truffle flavoured ice cream) started the proceedings accompanied by Raventos Blanc Nit de Nit Rose 2015 (Spain), a refreshing rosé. Daniel Arn, our food spokesman, complimented Chef Stefano for this great start to the meal. The five breads also attracted

praise and with these came a choice of two absolutely delicious olive oils which perhaps exhausted the restaurant’s annual budget for condiments! Sorry, Nicola, for our possibly taking advantage of your generosity. Next came Onion cooked in salt filled with braised quail and the first of two Sauvignon Blancs, Churton Sauvignon Blanc 2016 (Malborough, NZ). Both wine and food earned praise though wine spokesman, Jake Meerman, noted the wine to be slightly acidic and with a characteristic “kerosene” nose. The quail was delightful and well matched with the wine.

Danny’s favoured dish at home, Spaghetti & tomato water and Burrata cheese, fulfilled all his expectations with the raw tomato juice adding flavour to perfectly cooked spaghetti one could deem “toothsome”. Jake found the second Sauvignon (Terlano Winkl Sauvignon Blanc 2015 from Alto Adige, Italy) seemed to be almost a carbon copy of the first apart from additional smoothness and sweetness. Lasagna 2017 “(Granny would never be able to do that)” is a signature dish of Stefano and appreciated by the several diners who visit Enoteca regularly. Danny complimented the beef and béchamel sauce but confessed he likes his pasta to be softer, less

crunchy; I liked it very much. This was served with Massolino Nebbiolo Langhe 2012 (Langhe, Piedmont, Italy) and was thoroughly appreciated by one and all; sadly the colour has started to fade from the wine which might herald its passing. Our pick of the wines of the day was Felsina Rancia Chianti Classico Riserva 2013 (Tuscany, Italy) to which Parker had given 95 points; we all thought it to be a very nice wine with lots of things going for it. However, it was postulated that an Amarone might have proved a more suitable match for the Roasted Venison, popcorn, caramelized peach and beans purée, the main dish of the lunch. The meat was quite gamey (I loved that), but tender and had been cooked perfectly. Chocolate after-eight Cigar at first sight seemed to be too much to follow four large savoury servings but most ploughed on and enjoyed the dessert. It was accompanied by Rabl Traminer Auslese 2010 (Austria), not too sweet and very popular with most diners. There just remained a selection of Italian Cheeses with Taylor’s Port or Armagnac, thoughtfully brought by Tom Whitcraft and Andrew MacDowell to celebrate their birthdays. Finally, coffee. As ever, the service was immaculate, and we appreciated the attention we received throughout the meal from Proprietor Nicola, Maître d’ Alessandro and the three lovely waitresses.
