Award-winning choreographer and dancer Nina Rajarani MBE will present a solo Bharatanatyam recital of dance pieces she has choreographed to the music compositions of her husband Y Yadavan who will accompany on vocals. The performance will also feature a curtain raiser to be performed by emerging young dancers who have taken part in a masterclass with Nina, as well as a dynamic finale by Nina’s youth group. This performance is part of a tour funded by Arts Council England and supported in kind by Harrow Arts Centre, the Bhavan and New Dimensions.

An iconic musician and prolific personality, Ustad Vilayat Khan breathed new life into the tradition of the Sitar by singing through its strings and created a style now known as the ‘gayaki ang’. Join this unique evening reflecting on his legacy and celebrating his many beautiful compositions. Curated by the Sitar Music Society in collaboration with the London Sitar Academy, the evening will feature Khan Sahib’s senior disciple, Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE along with talented artists Harmeet Singh Virdee (Sitar), Roopa Panesar (Sitar), Jasdeep Singh Degun (Sitar), Kaviraj Singh (Vocal) and Upneet Singh (Tabla).

The sonification of data along with a live musical ensemble provide the database or the background score to create these dialogues aka codes in real-time! Narratives of 0s and 1s is a visualization of the world of data through movement and oral vocabulary of bharatanatyam. This creative dance piece seeks to decode the impact of binary representations of data in society. Using body as a data warehouse and music as a streaming process, performers attempt to extract narratives about data, transform them into the language of Bharatanatyam and load them into a forty-minute production to integrate with the audience.

Presented by Bhumi Odissi Dance Academy with the support of The Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and all participating Odissi artists.

Meet tragic heroine Draupadi, also known as ‘Krishnaa’, from the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, in a fantastical dance production. Said to be born of fire, Draupadi led a life full of incident and drama. The production depicts key moments in her story from the perspective of the divinity Krishna. Abhinava Dance Company are one of India’s most popular and cutting-edge production houses, performing for over 25 years to more than seven million people across five continents. The company was founded by couple Nirupama and Rajendra, who are involved as dancers, choreographers, artistic directors and producers, and showcases a variety of Indian dance forms.

The Bhavan invites you to a much-awaited Sitar concert by Pandit Kushal Das with Pt. Rajkumar Misra on Tabla. Pt Kushal Das, an internationally acclaimed ‘Sitar and Surbahar’ player, was born in a highly enriched musical family of Kolkata. Kushal started his training from the age of five under the guidance of his uncle and father. Later he received rigorous training in advanced sitar techniques and the art of creating music, under the affectionate guidance of Pt. Sanjoy Banerjee. He is a “top-grade” musician of All India Radio and Television. Kushal has participated in most of the major concert festivals in India and abroad and has several CDs released from across the Globe.

A Fundraiser to support animals rescued from the Australian Bushfires Kalakar UK presents a hypnotic, world class Indian Classical music concert – an extraordinary blend of Indo-Western Classical music with Kathak dance. The first half of the event will feature Srimati Chandra Chakraborty. She will be accompanied by internationally acclaimed Pandit Sanju Sahai on Tabla and the very talented Rekesh Chauhan on Harmonium. The second half of the event will mesmerize the audience with an experimental journey of Indo-Western Classical Music with Kathak dance. Chandra Chakraborty will be joined by the sensational Kathak performer Indrani Dutta and the critically acclaimed London based band iyatra Quartet.

THE BHAVAN’S SPECIAL COURSES BEGINNER’S INTENSIVE COURSES REGISTER BY FEB 23, 2020 We are delighted to announce our Special Beginner’s Course in all 4 of our featured subjects of this year – Sitar, Tabla, Violin, and Mridangam. These new intensive courses are open to anyone wanting to learn Indian instrumental music. Enrol to get a head start on the basics over the course of six weeks. At the end of the course you may be eligible to join the summer term of our 2019/20 foundation training course from April 2020.
