Editors Desk “May the tree of our life be firmly rooted in the soil of love. Let good deeds be the leaves on that tree. May words of kindness form its flowers and may peace be its fruits”. As the first part of our Promise is “Duty to God” it is very much essential for us to lead a spiritual life. Some of us feel that they do not get time to pray God. The Roman philosopher Seneca said “Everyone has time if he likes. People cling to it of their own free will and think that to be busy in a proof of happiness”. If we look closely at our life, we will definitely find the time to remember God. If we are not devotional in nature, we can simply observe our own breath, remaining conscious of every inhalation and exhalation. This in itself is a spiritual practice that will help to create more awareness within us. We can also examine the routine activities we do every day and find ways to do them more consciously, to convert them into reminders of our true nature and the ultimate goal of our life. How we wake up in the morning is very important. When we wake up in the morning, before putting our feet on the ground, let us give thanks to the Earth for supporting and sustaining us. Before getting out of bed we should pray, “Oh God let me do some good things for others today”. While taking our morning bath, we can remember to be grateful to Mother Nature for providing us water. We can take care not to use more water than we need, remembering that water is a precious resource. We can also remember that not everyone has access to water and we can pray that everyone’s needs are met. Before eating, we can offer our gratitude to God for giving us food to eat. We can remember that there is so much sacrifice and effort involved on the part of other living beings in order to bring us this food. Also, we should be careful not to take more than we can eat. Wasting food is equal to disrespecting God and all the people who don’t have anything to eat. “Taking more food than we need is an act of violence”. In many camps I have seen children taking more food and throwing while they are not able to eat. Even Adult Leaders in the camp, are also seen wasting the food. Many of us take all of these things granted, we consider them as our birthright/free gift. But it is not so far the vast majority of human beings. In fact we are very fortunate to possess even these simple fundamental necessities. When we think about the plight of suffering people all over the world, how can we say our life is not blessed? As the member of this organisation it is our moral duty to share this concept to our Scouts & Guides in the camps, Adult Leaders in the Training Courses so that they will pass on it to their friends in the units/schools and even in the house with parents and relatives. Thus we can train our children (even at our houses) a valuable spiritual life. Thus we can become useful citizens of the country and implement the part of Promise and principle of Scouting “To do my duty to God and my country”.

Members of BS&G should start separating bio-degradable waste and non-bio-degradable waste before disposal. This can help our local bodies like Municipalities to maintain better conservancy in the place we live. Adopt a park or a part of your colony/school/ hospital/public places and ensure sustained efforts for cleanliness. Stop burning waste which can be re-cycled. Identify a method by which you can make some earning by proper disposal of unserviceable materials. Our smallest effort can contribute for creating better environment.
