Miss Betty Desire has been entertaining anyone who would listen in Bellingham for nearly 10 years, and is proprietor of The Betty Pages, the monthly publication that you are reading at this very moment. It is her hope that your perusal of the Betty Pages will enrich your life one chuckle at a time. Writer Bridget Adams currently resides in Washington State but that is always subject to change. Lucky enough to be a full-time, if poor, writer, she is most likely somewhere in front of her computer with a cup of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. Queer Film Historian Lyle Pearson has published in Film Quarterly Sight and Sound, International Film Guide, Filmfare, Youth Times, and Manshots. With a BA from Pacific Lutheran College (1959) and a MA from San Francisco State College (1968), he has also taught film at Western Washington University.

Naomi graduated Whatcom Community College with an Associates in Visual Communications -Graphic Design but prefers more hands on tinkering such as wire craft & random projects (of which she always has many still to finish).

Staff Photographer John Phillip after 40+ years of television

production engineering work John has settled down in Bellingham to semi retirement and is now revised his love of photography. His education touched on Theology, pre-med, law enforcement, fire protection engineering and film production. John likes to keep broad horizons. “Don’t Dream It, Be It

Betty’s Corner

April showers have arrived on schedule and as I live in a basement apartment the water is very noticeable! My back yard is beginning to look like a lake. It is not so bad really. Who knew I would have “water front” property? Now I know why the living room and bedrooms have “indoor/outdoor” carpeting! Two years ago my then roommate Terry had to run up to Fred Meyer and buy a shop vac so we could suck the water up from in front of the door in order to stop the apartment from turning in to a water park. We had air mattresses ready in case the shop vac failed, fortunately we were successful. An indoor pool, though enjoyable, is too expensive to keep up. Those are just a few of the many challenges we face living here in the Pacific North Wet!

That being said, any resident of the ‘Ham will tell you that rain will not stop the true ‘Hamster from fun and revelry! Particularly if that fore mentioned revelry benefits a worthy cause. For the last 12 years we in the fourth corner have celebrated “April Brews Day” a night of brew tasting and fun frolicking all benefiting the “Max Higbee Center This years celebration is April 27th and you can read more about it in The Betty Pages! I will be there so we should meet and sip on a brew or two or 12.

Speaking of costing a bit of cash, in last month’s Betty Pages we reported about the status of gay rights on the African Continent. There is news from Uganda. Buzz Feed has reported that the U.S. State Department has a commitment from Uganda’s President to engage in a dialog with legitimate U.S. Scientists regarding the nature of homosexuality. It seems in 2009 anti-gay evangelical leaders from the U.S. including Scot Lively held seminars in Uganda whose attendees included influential Ugandan legislators. At these meetings they passed off their belief that “God can cure homosexuality”and homosexuality s a learned behavior that can be unlearned as the latest in scientific fact. Those meetings led to the passage of that Countries strict anti gay law. 14 years for a first offense up to life in prison for “aggravated homosexuality”. Now the State Department has to spend good money to try to clean up the mess these Charlatans left behind. For the sake of innocent Ugandans I hope Secretary of State Kerry’s diplomatic mission is successful

A poetic homage to Betty Desire I'm just this dancing girl. I humbly offer an omage to the editor, the lately paused and always fateful, Miss Betty Desire:

April also marks the beginning of a new advice column for The Betty Pages. You can now send any and all queries about any and all things to our own Miss Tricksey Desire. A disclaimer must be made however, as Miss Tricksey has no formal training as a therapist of any kind. She is not a Dr. of anything. She is merely a listening ear willing to do a minimal amount of research to answer your questions. Feel free to take advantage of our papers humble Muse. Remember advice, like The Betty Pages, is free! Therapy on the other hand can cost you a bit of cash.

Where have all the parties gone? It’s too quiet where East here has sprung. Is there only one egg to house us all? Move it. In smolderingly smart Marrying Janes we strut satisfied and sedate, or spin in lonely hamster wheels. I want my Betty Back! Too clean goodnights don’t let anyone breathe. Incorporeal: a wrist, a core operation of gentrification worms carpel tunnels in our homeland anxiety. This Pacific pond swirls. U.S. Apple eyes and Goopy webcams watch androids who do not dream of electric cash cows. It's springtime for two lips in TV Land. Humans die in fox holes on their sofas. We sit. Condodos extinguish all the leaping life left in this little snowglobe raintown on the border of everywhere. I love U.edu Western and Unions but $ is $ Piled higher and Deeper. M.A. B.A. Bass Buzz have you any coffee? I have nowhere to dance and pray or grow. Go. Go. See me! Share the music and the noisy why-fi sci-fi which is the chaos mother of everything true. Ya know Knowledge feeds on dreams and wisdom breeds best in the bellies of fools who jump. We’ve got work to sing. Please lazarus my nightlights. Make it count round. Hear you here, thumper. While our local community has not yet created a category of beer festivals for the “best of Bellingham” competitions, it’s safe to say that April Brew’s Day would be the front runner. Let me tell you why. Drinking for a cause is the best way to drink. Some of the ultra-observant folks that walk through the admissions entrance may notice that April Brew’s Day is brought to you by Max Higbee Center. Regardless of whether or not you make that connection, your beer money is still going to our non-profit, so let me tell you a little bit about where your (or your parents’) money is going. Max Higbee Center is a local grassroots non-profit that provides recreation programs for teens and adults with developmental disabilities. In short, we’re awesome. We are a close-knit family of members, staff, volunteers and friends that come together 6 days of week to recreate, socialize, learn, grow and relax. I guarantee you that every human that walks through our doors will smile, laugh and/or be inspired before they walk back out. Come check us out, and I guarantee you’ll find the most inclusive, happy and hilarious group of people on earth. Or, at least in Whatcom County. Boundary Bay Brewery. 12 years ago, our non-profit was close to closing our doors. With the help of local business owners, Ed and Janet, Max Higbee Center developed Bellingham’s first micro-brew tasting festival, which has kept our doors open for over a decade. 12 years later, April Brew’s Day has become a well-oiled machine, all thanks to our continuous sponsor down at 1107 Railroad Ave. Hats off to you, Ed and Janet- may your days be forever filled with good brews! “Best Cat Herders in Whatcom County” Have you ever tried to stand in front of 200 cool cats that are working for free and explain to each of them their unique job responsibilities? We have! Every year over 200 people volunteer their time to help make April Brew’s Day materialize out of thin air. And within a 30 minute time period. Someone buy Leah Schlegel (our volunteer coordinator) a beer for making that happen. I highly recommend setting up a lawn chair outside of the beer garden at 4:30 to observe 200 volunteers, 43 brewers, 5 food trucks and a parakeet setup the festival. And then send me the pictures. Ales. Brews. Ciders. Cervezas. Libations. You know- BEER! After 12 years of creating and perfecting Bellingham’s first beer festival, we are the premier event in town to find new and exciting beers alongside some of your old favorites. Year #13 will include 43 brewers with 80 brews and a sampling of ciders. And this will be your first chance to try beers from all of our new local breweries (Aslan, Wander and Gruff). Has anyone ever tried all 86 beers? If you do this year, be sure to tell us so that we can shake your hand, say well done, and quickly call a taxi. We celebrate the other guys. Yeah, we know you guys and gals attend, too. The ones who buy tickets to get in the doors, but don’t actually drink. For you, we’ve got delicious non-alcoholic beverages from Boundary Bay and Kombucha Town. We’ve got sweet sweet chocolate truffles from Evolve. There’ll be amazing, hot and fresh food from multiple food trucks. And you can rock out to tunes from Out of the Ashes, Still Bill Band and Skamania. So grab that root beer float and dance your sober socks off, and thanks for being responsible. We’ll do anything for you, drinker of beer. Well, we probably won’t wash your car or buy you a new house, but we’ll do our darndest to listen to your requests and make them happen. Want more beers and shorter lines? Did that. Need some gluten free stuff? Check. More food truck options? Yep. Online apps to vote for your favorite beers of the night? Just did that. Want our board president to wear bright pink pajamas and yodel for entertainment? I’ll sure try to make that happen!

We’ve got bacon. 2014 attendees may notice some guys walking around in egg and bacon costumes. Wondering why? Their promoting our 2nd annual Brew’s Day Brunch of course. We figure there will be 3,500 tired and hungover festival attendees in Bellingham on Sunday the 27th. When you wake up feeling foggy and floopy with only $10 left to your name, you can head straight to Boundary Bay Brewery for some hot breakfast. It’s only $10!! We’ll feed you, hydrate you, entertain you and give out FREE beer! (Well, technically you’ll have to pay $1 and win a raffle.) April 27th, 10am-2pm, at Boundary Bay. You’ll feel better. And your last $10 will go to Max Higbee Center, so good job being hungover and doing something nice! Now that you know how unbelievably stellar this festival is, you should probably tear out this article and make all of your friends buy tickets. Here’s what you need to know.

Bring Respect Back into Your Life! John Phillips

For many years I have interacted with hundreds of people and during that time I have learned so many important lessons. One of the single most important of those lessons was that of respect. The “R” word is that thing that every person on the planet needs to understand to its fullest. Respect goes well beyond “respecting your elders”. In fact, respect should be applied to every facet of your life — and should not be something you have to constantly re-learn. But… it is. On a daily basis, I am reminded how much effort and energy goes into adopting new ways of thinking. But honestly, respect shouldn't be a “new way of thinking” — it should just be part of every day life. But so few understand the concept. This is especially true of what I call the “Me Generation”. Anyone between the ages of, say, fifteen and twenty-five are guilty of tossing out respect like it was yesterday’s fashion. Of course, a lack of respect isn’t limited to teens and twenty-something's, adults suffer from this same lack in ways I simply cannot comprehend. I've witnessed, firsthand, adults with a lack of respect for one another, their spouse, their children, opinions of others and of course for themselves. Here’s an interesting task for you. Tune into nearly any given reality show and count how many times you watch an adult show disrespect for something… anything! Or hop onto Facebook and behold the deluge of hatred, vitriol, the pointing of fingers, and the continual whining and complaining. And just how often do you directly witness people showing respect for themselves or others? Disrespect is rampant. Society has lost this coveted courtesy and I want to do everything I can to win that back. I hope I can convince you to join me on this hayride. This means we help those that seem to not get it… to get it. That begins by looking inward. If everyone makes a tiny change in the way they deal with others (or social networking, etc), I firmly believe we can make this planet a lot more enjoyable. A notable quote regarding respect comes from Antoine de Saint-Exupery: "I have no right, by anything I do or say, to demean a human being in his own eyes. What matters is not what I think of him; it is what he thinks of himself. To undermine a man’s self-respect is a sin."

It was another interesting month of trying to decide what to write, Poppets. See, I’ve known for a year that I wanted to write a spring, pre-registration, article on summer camps for LGBTQ kids and families. Then Adam Baldwin – one of my favorite, under-rated actors {Full Metal Jacket, Firefly, Independence Day, Chuck} – showed his tail in a big way. Equating same sex marriage with incest. Implicitly condoning fat shaming. Name calling. Cyber-bullying. *sigh* While I batted around an idea about him, and the issues his tweets raised, I decided fuck that. The best way I, personally, can counter that kind of hate is to point toward love. Acceptance. Support. Inclusivity. So yes, Adam Baldwin, I am calling you out. You and your ilk. But I’m doing it by saying “ignore him and his vitriol. Look here instead. Pay attention to these people. Because these people – these places – are worth your time. He’s not. Not any longer.” Now. Let’s talk about LGBTQ summer camps, shall we? Because while we don’t often think about The Betty Pages as being a family-friendly publication, there’s really no reason for it not to be. I mean, Betty is a parent. David and I are parents. Somehow, I suspect a lot of you are parents. Some of our kids are straight, coming from LGBTQ parents. Some of us have LGBTQ kids. Whatever the familial make-up, having kids and wanting the best for them hardly precludes any of us from reading The Pages. But summer can be a tough time for kids who live outside the heterostandard. Often, if they are LGBTQ themselves, they face ostracism and bullying for being who they are. Often, if they are straight, but come from same-gendered parents, once that gets out, they face ostracism and bullying because of who we are. It doesn’t have to be that way, though. Camp Ten Trees and Camp It Up! believe it can be – it should be – different. And they set out to make it different. Camp Ten Trees, here in Washington, is a traditional, residential (or sleepaway, as we used to call it) summer camp, with traditional activities and events for children and teens. Along with those programs, though, they also offer age-appropriate programs that explore social justice, identity, and empowerment. Archery and self-acceptance, all in one place! As of this year, they are also offering a LEAD (Leadership, Education, And Development) Camper program for teens 16 and 17 years old, which replaces their CIT (Counselor In Training) programs from previous years. They offer one week for kids from LGBTQ/nontraditional families, and another week for LGBTQ and allied kids. The great part about that is that LGBTQ kids and their straight siblings, or their straight best friends, can still enjoy camp together. This year, those are August 10-16 and August 17-23, respectively, with the LEAD Camper program spread out over both weeks. www.camptentrees.org or 206-288-9568 for more information. Camp It Up! down in California, is a non-traditional camp in that it is multigenerational and family-focused. The whole family, from toddlers to grandparents, can come for 4 nights, or 8 nights, and enjoy a vacation that is outdoorsy, yet civilized. With plenty of activities geared toward specific age groups, and whole families, it takes more work not to bond and make friends than it would to enjoy yourselves. At the same time, none of the activities are mandatory, so if you just want time with your own family, in a beautiful setting, surrounded by other LGBTQ families, you can do that, too. Dates are July 26-August 3, and again, you can stay 4 nights, or 8 nights, depending on availability. http://www.campitup.org/index.html or (510) 3380370 for more information. And! Each camp offers sliding scales and will work with you to help keep

camp from being cost-prohibitive. So, don’t think you can’t do this for your kids because of finances. Registration has already started, and will fill up fast, so call or click soon. It’s almost summer, Poppets. The best time to be a kid. And thanks to Camp Ten Trees and Camp It Up!, it’s the best time to be any kid – and that’s worth more than hate, in my book.

India Re-Chained: A Bibliography of Gay Cinema Lyle Pearson

Yet one BJP (Bharat [Indian] People’s Party), the main opposition party, leader asks why the Indian government doesn’t punish U.S. diplomats in India who have “same sex companions (TOI12/18/14).” University of Pune Professor R. Raja Rao disagrees, for it is heterosexual men who are the rapists, and cites responsible gay activists Ashok Row Kavi, Suniti Namjoshi, Ruth Vanita, Hoshang Merchant and Seth. “Love, because it is so scarce in the lives of gay folk, is handled as a prized possession, while heterosexuals regularly take it for granted.” A TV channel poll found 84% of responses favored 377 (DC 12/19/14). Yet, THE DECCAN CHRONICLE argues, “there is no point in invoking the KAMA SUTRA” against 377 because of the coming election, when ‘honor killings’ are prevalent in the states of Haryana and Punjab, in a country that “lives simultaneously in several centuries” and the village moves into the city. “It is not unusual for politicians to seek to appropriate supernatural beings to spread their political message” -- and there is no pan-Hinduism, no universal agreement in Hinduism. And then there are the Gay Pride Weeks. Just as in the U.S. Gay Azaadi (Freedom) Week moves from city to city, at least five of them, allowing activists to follow suit. In Pune, of 1712 surveys sent to psychiatrists 262 were returned, 219 favouring the overturn of 377. By December 2 the government sought a review of the Supreme Court decision, realizing the impossibility of countering it through a hung Parliament, arguing that the “Law does not operate in a vacuum but in a social context... Indian society prior to the enactment of [377] had a much greater tolerance of homosexuality (HINDU 12/21/14).” Even the BJP was having second thoughts. The gay helpline was receiving panic calls, as before the High Court

w w w. i s s u u . c o m / t h e b e t t y p a g e s

On December 11, 2013, in India, the world’s largest democracy, the Supreme Court re-criminalized gay sex. Four years earlier the Delhi High Court, with jurisdiction over the territory of Delhi (similar to our District of Columbia) had made it quasi-legal for the whole country by repealing the infamous Section 377 of the Indian Penal (no pun intended) Code passed by the British in 1860,long since repealed in Britain itself. A two-judge panel reversed the High Court’s decision, writing that Section 377 itself “does not suffer from the vice of unconstitutionality” since it applies only to sexual acts, not sexual orientation. Therefore, it claimed, its repeal is in the province of the Indian Parliament.Vinay Charran, the director of the Bangalore Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, who also runs a gay hotline, and is a working psychotherapist, tells me that one of the two judges, G.S. Singhvi, on whose last day in office this was, “isn’t homophobic -- he just thinks nobody should be having sex.” This is a debate that goes back to Mahatma Gandhi’s experiments with sex, sleeping with girls to try to prove that he had the power not to respond sexually to them, and the Indian government buying Gandhi’s personal letters -including those to his friend the architect-bodybuilder Hermann Kallenbach, whose portrait he kept near his bed. But at the same time that the Supreme Court re-criminalized homosexual acts, the state of Tamil Nadu decided to give hijras, as a third gender, separate toilets, passports, driving licenses, ration and Id cards; and its holy city of Madurai recognized its Aravanis as an official gay religious sect, giving them jobs as Home Guards, and in traffic regulation and disaster management. And the state of Karnataka now allows its own religious gay sect to participate in the privileges available to a “backward community.” (Again, no pun intended.) One hijra, Urni Jabhar, who works for the advocate group Humsafar (Fellow Traveler) Trust, claims that “after 2009, the number of suicides and forced marriages dropped, but he now fears they will rise again. Homosexuality had “found a voice” after the High Court decision in 2009, and rather than going back into the closet, it has now become a “political movement.” Yet Amnesty International called the ruling a “black day for freedom in India.” To THE TIMES OF INDIA (12/12/14) national elections coming up in April of this year will “make any progress difficult.” THE TIMES considers the ruling “regressive,” reinstating a possible “jail sentence of life” and giving “the police one more excuse to harass, exploit and jail law-abiding people.” The legislature, a coalition of many parties, is weak and the gay and lesbian population estimated at only 7.13%, despite Twitter, Facebook and the internet going wild in disbelief on the same day, according to THE HINDU: among Bollywood personalities who Twittered were John Abraham, Amir Khan, Shyam Benegal, Nandita Das and Celina Jaitley. THE TIMES carried an APP that would activate a clip of Onir, since the death of Rituparno Ghosh India’s furthest ‘out’ film director, lambasting the decision and later carried a photo of him having shaved ‘377’ into the hair on his head. “the 2.5 million [LBGT] communities is,” THE HINDU claimed, “a high-risk group,” nearly 7% HIV infected.” The same HINDU editorialized that this was “medieval justice”; actually, it was Tudor, as in 1536 Henry VIII passed the first English anti-sodomy law in a successful attempt to take over the country’s Catholic monasteries. There is only one “legal” lesbian marriage in India, between two women for a village in the state of Uttar Pradesh who fled to Gurgaon in Haryana to escape harassment and violence -- but now even it is in jeopardy. Vikram Seth, concerned for rural India, also states, “I am a criminal today.” Appeals

against the High Court verdict, from “motley religious groups,” including an astrologer who argued that the military would break down because soldiers would start having sex with each other; Baba Ramdev, a yoga guru; and some Muslims, “were tinged with religion-guided views.” Yet in THE TIMES daily religion column The Speaking Tree, Devdutt Pattanaik reminded readers that in the MAHABHARATA Shikhandi was raised as a son, Shikhandia, that Bhisma refers to him/her as a “non-man,” even as s/he rides on Krishna’s chariot. Yuvanashva, a man, became pregnant by drinking a magic potion. The great hero Lord Ayyappa was born Hari-Hara, of Vishnu and Shiva, e.g. of Vishnu as Mohini and Shiva. Cursed by Urvashi, Arjuna becomes a “kliba,” or hijra, Krishna suggesting that he masquerade as Brihannala during his last year of exile. Bhangashvana is called both mother and father. Shiva became Gopeshwara. “Shrutis” are cosmic vibrations, “smritis” are rules for human behavior, depending on individual contexts, and individual goals cannot be standardized. In the state of Maharasthra the saints Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram extol Krishna as Mother Vithal “for in love and devotion, gender is sublimated.” Male devotees of Krishna often identify and dress as female. The Tamil poet Nammalvar describes devotees as men, women and “in-between.” Seth in THE HINDU (12/22/14) claims Section 377 goes against “the KAMA SUTRA, the Khajuraho and Konark temples, the memoirs of Babur and the works of poet Mir Taki Mir.” The Section is absurd, he says, Why haven’t protesters in the streets been arrested? “This reflects a situation where the law is repealed by people’s behavior; with a social movement and a majority opinion rendering a law non-implementable” claims an advocate to the Supreme Court who “likens the current situation to Mahatma Gandhi’s making his own salt -- an act of defiance against British imperialism.

Queer Film Bibliography continued

decision. But the Supreme Court on 1/29/14 refused to review its own ruling. 377 still stands. Meanwhile in entertainment news Sunil Grover, who played the transvestite Gutthi (“Confused,’ or ‘Puzzle’), who liked to cozy up to male guests on TV’s ‘Comedy Nights With Kapil’ has quit the show to create his own show. India’s second furthest ‘out’ director, Karen Johar, on his TV program ‘Koffee with Karan,’ when asked who he will marry answered “I’ll tell you backstage,” (pun intended) and the audience howled. And in cinema (this is a column about cinema, after all) in the state of Gujarat, the home state of Narendra Modi, the BJP’s candidate for India’s Prime Minister, Dr. Kiran Demari’s film MEGHDHANUSHY (THE COLORS OF LIFE, or RAINBOW) has just been refused 100% tax relief even though it was made in Gujarat and is in Gujarati. Not only that, the bench of judges who reviewed it demanded that the words “gay, homosexual and samalaingik [homosexual]” be cut, as well as a speech “by Mahendar Singh Gohil, the prince of Rajipala.” The prince is well known internationally, having appeared on The Oprah Show and funded several earlier independent gay films. (Gohil is on Facebook, and MEGHDHANUSHY on YouTube.) An upcoming Marathi film, BIOSCOPE, with four directors, will in part focus on a female same-sex relationship. Finally, in sex news (this is also a column about sex) condom use has decreased by 40% in the last six years in India, worrying not only for AIDS but for “the population explosion (TOI 1/12/14)”: “of the 22,000 condom-vending machines installed across the country, 10,000 went missing and 1,100 were not working. The machines had cost Rs.21 crore [$42,000].” HIV AIDS, although it has decreased by half in five years, remains the third largest cause of death in India, after malaria and cancer, at 56 per 100,000. w w w. i s s u u . c o m / t h e b e t t y p a g e s

Community Events Spring is right around the corner, which means it is almost time for the Bellingham Slam, the city’s championship-winning minor league basketball team, to return to the court. The Slam will be embarking on their ninth season starting on Friday, April 25 with their Season tips off April 25! home opener at Whatcom Pavilion, located on the campus of Whatcom Community College. The regular season runs through June and this will be the first of seven home games scheduled for the Pavilion. The Judgement Card Kevin Walder

The Judgement Card is another member of the Major Arcana family. These cards speak to the real reason for the question and they carry a great deal of power in a reading. Some readers feel that a reading which does not contain at least one Major Arcana card may not be valid. This card is actually A very positive card on many levels rather than being fear inspiring. The imagery in most decks will be one of an Archangel with the trumpet and the bodies beginning to rise from the grave, giving us a scene inspired by the book of Revelations and thus the designation of this card as judgment. The Judgement Card is about rebirth, reinvention, re-emergence. This card is suggesting that nothing short of a rebirth is necessary for the growth and continued existence of the individual. It speaks of an ultimate makeover of the soul. The artwork for this card in the Robin Wood deck diverts from the traditional and shows a female figure rising from a fiery cauldron with the mythical Phoenix behind her. This is an apt depiction of the level of rebirth and reinvention an individual must undertake to fulfill the meaning of this card. In the numerical lineup of the Major Arcana cards the Judgement Card is followed by The World which speaks further about the rewards available to one who undertakes this dramatic rebirth. When I see The Judgement Card appear in a reading I am lead to understand that no matter what the original question may have been there is a much larger, more complete transformation taking place in the life of the querent. This card

tells me that the querent is not just redecorating their life but are undertaking a massive structural rebuild that is calling on all their resources to accomplish. This card tells me that the querent is so deeply involved that the exhilaration of their own progress is giving them the strength to continue this epic undertaking. This card speaks to us of purification having weathered the storm or passed through the fire there is a new beginning, a new emergence for the individual. The judgment card can indicate that one has been lost for a period. It can indicate that the individual has struggled mightily with identity with the passion and the motivation to make life livable. This internal struggle is one that can follow us throughout a lifetime, the constant adjusting and realigning so that we are true to ourselves. I find this card is a strong reminder to remain in constant touch with oneself, with one’s passions, with ones motivations to be perfectly clear about one’s identity. This card stands for all those who have gone before and allowed each of us to fully live our identity. I also find this card encourages us to develop A real relationship with the self learn to accept and embrace the self as we truly are, without change or adjustment. Developing this relationship with oneself is key to finding inner peace. It is also key to tapping in to the inner passions and deepest motivations we possess. How has the energy of The Judgement Card manifested in your life? Are you currently experiencing a rebirth of your own? When faced with such a complete reinvention of yourself where will you find your strength?

Okay so I am an old Rocky Horror Picture Show Geezer, a devout follower of the RHPS and have been since 1978. I have noted over the years many changes, some good, some bad, but over all the RHPS experience is more fun than ever and the RHPS has proven to be timeless! PROPS: Props have come a long way from the old days. Shadow casts have always been known for having great props and the quality of these props today are nothing short of amazing : A Rocky tank, a control board, griffins at the castle door, Brads car, the Dalton Home of Happiness sign, and so much more are all better from way-back when. AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION: call-outs and props have changed as well. The call-outs have been updated over the years are more relevant to today's life. Props, back in the 80's a aisle would be filled to the ankles with rice, bits of hot dogs, prunes and people thought nothing of lighting there Zippo ( today you would Flick a Bic) during " There's a light". The days of hot dogs are long gone ( thank you health dept ) and now lighters are replaced with cell phones, glow sticks and laser pointers ( fire code regulations.) COSTUMES AND PERFORMANCE: Costumes are amazing these days, every detail, down to the last sequin, can be checked and copied. Today people have the experience of us old geezers to draw from as well as DVD's, and online videos, or they can simply purchase a costume on-line. When I first started out there was no internet, no videos, or printed material to draw from, if you wanted to check a costume or film detail, you simply had to be at the theater at midnight on Friday and Saturday. As much as we prided ourselves on how we looked and we did the show back then, things these days are a lot more accurate, to the point of being an art, yes ART. THE LETS-GET-FUCKED-UP FACTOR: Performances these days , in general, don't seem to be as into the ' sex, drugs, and rock n roll " aspect of RHPS as the old days. I'm remembering the extremes, but back in the 80s, it was common practice to be drinking from a flask, snorting coke and smoking weed ( that is why we needed our Zippo ) in the theater. These days that would get a show cancelled and people thrown in jail. A huge difference there! RHPS WAS THE REFUGE FOR THE OUT CAST: This used to be how RHPS was, it was a place for the odd and weird ( THAT WAS ME ), gay/lesbian/ transgendered, the general out cast, to fit in. Now RHPS is more mainstreamed than ever as well as being a place for the old school. PERFORMANCES IN GENERAL: Better than ever as a whole but I do miss all the scratches of an old 35mm film. The cost of tickets, of course, have skyrocketed. I remember the days of $2.50 tickets, now some places are $15.00 or more. ( Okay back in 1978 gas was only $0.50 a gallon ) CONVENTIONS: Bigger and better than ever! The old days were just Shock Treatment and Rocky Horror and a costume contest or trivia contest...now the cons have gone from 1 day events to 2, 3, or 4. The pre-shows, venders, videos of local cast shows and the Q & A panels are always of interest. I and a few of my friends now have to travel anywhere from Vancouver, BC to Portland, Or. to watch the RHPS nearly every weekend, most of the time the venues are sold out, ( thank goodness for online ticket sales ) as the past showings have been during the Halloween season at the MBT. I would like to see a mid-night showing the Rocky Horror Picture Show in Bellingham on a monthly basis and would be willing to help organize the shows and put together a shadows cast to work the showings. An additional film that would do well as a mid-night show in Bellingham would

be "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert". The showings of Priscilla normal start will a Drag pre-party. Okay, there is my little bit history, so tell us what do you think about The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Maybe we can get together and watch or travel the RHPS. I Love Animals

I love animals. If I where able to go up to any animal and just pet them or even play with them. Can you imagine walking up to a lion and just running your fingers through there mane? How about playing fetch with a cheetah? Or climbing on the back of a hippo? Playing in a tree with a panther? The fun ideas are endless. But we all know trying any one of these things could be hazardous to our health. Putting it lightly. Why do these animals act this way? Who trained them to be aggressive? Is it instinct? I think it’s Protection. I believe just like most all living creatures will do what they need to survive. Even a tree or plant will flourish itself towards the light to grow in order to survive. We, as humans, aren’t any different. We, just like animals, will do what is necessary to survive. Obviously, more domesticated but the results of survival are the same. We, as domesticated animals, protect ourselves more commonly with intelligence then with aggression. Most of the time. We’ve learned not to walk up to wild animals and assume we can sit next to them and pet them. There are people that this very same learning skill should be practiced. Signs of danger aren’t always present and caution must be taken. I have a friend who has a son that just got bitten on the face by a dog. I don’t know all the details so I won’t try to guess what caused the incident. I do want to express my feelings on the topic. I have a son close to my friends son’s age. The emotions that go through my head if I where to picture this happening to my son. The anger towards the dog. My frustration to the dog owner. My sadness for my son. The scars that where embedded into his cheeks. The stitches on his face that may possibly leave life long marks. And what about the emotional scars? Will they heal or will they have a life long indentation? I know there are a lot of variables to the issue such as the one I just spoke of with my friend as well as other incidents that I have heard about. such variables as the dogs training, the dog wasn’t leashed, the owners fault, the dogs breed, the victims fault. We run around this fence of blame all the time but the problem still seems to exist. Could it be our lack of respect for others? Maybe the dog was just protecting or being protective. Maybe the victim was being careless and assumed the opposite reaction from the animal. I have personally witnessed my son approach animals that I would have been more cautious of. I’m saddened to think about what happened to my friends son but I am also saddened to think about this problem may never be remedied. Did you know that 2% of Americans are bitten each year? This is about 4.5 million people. Oh, and the story gets worse. the statistics on fatalities worsen each year. This year alone 8 people have died from dog attacks. And yes that is not a typo. Just this year. With in the last two months. When I started writing this article I wanted to learn more on the topic (like I do on most of my articles). After reading some of the facts on the police reports and finding out the statistics I got very depressed. I had to stop reading them. I have met a lot of wonderful dogs but I also know there are dogs out there that don’t deserve the same respect. I also have met a lot of wonderful dog owners but I also know there are dog owners out there that don’t deserve to have a dog. I owned a dog once. (Siberian Husky) We had to euthanize it because it had killed a rabbit. Unfortunately, for every one the rabbit was a pet rabbit. Every one lost in this case. I hope this is not the case in other families. I really don’t know what can remedy this problem but if we don’t at least turn the tables around on the worsening statistics we may run into a bigger problem then we care to deal with. BTW, accept for designated areas. Washington state law says your dog must be on a leash. If only dogs could talk.

Ask Miss Tricksy Desire Dear Tricksy My husband and I relocated to Bellingham a little over a year ago and were quickly welcomed into our new neighbors’ social whirl. Two couples in the neighborhood are gay — one male, one female. While the gay couples are nice enough, my husband would not include them when it was our turn to host because he do not approve of their lifestyle choices. Since then, we have been excluded from neighborhood gatherings, and someone even suggested that 'we' are bigots! Tricksy, While I understand the phrase “when in Rome,” But my husband will not accept their lifestyle, I on the other hand find all our new neighbors wonderful.

Dear Not Sure Regardless of what you think, a person’s sexual orientation isn't a “lifestyle choice.” People don’t choose to be gay, they can’t change being gay any more than you can change being heterosexual. I find it interesting that he is unwilling to reciprocate the hospitality of people who welcomed you and opened their homes to you, and yet you complain because you are receiving similar treatment. Girl you are the other half of your family, stand up and be counted. You can interact with people you like and let him be the bigot! Please don't blow it.

- Not Sure Dear Tricksy My Boy Toy is almost 22. He is the light of my life. I love him more than I can describe, but sometimes I can’t handle his energy. I carefully monitor how much protein he swallows so I’m are sure his diet is not that’s causing the problem. Mostly I think he is just a rowdy little boy, and I love that. The problem is, I can’t take him out and show him off without dreading that he will act up. His refusal to listen to my requests — or listen to me when I speak to him at all — and has put a strain on our relationship and I feel like “failure” as a Sugar Daddy. What are some things I can do to help my boy channel his energy in a positive and loving way to me alone, while getting some relief from his nonstop gogo attitude? - A Bit Over 50 Sugar Daddy

Dear A Bit Over 50 Sugar Daddy This may just be a phase your boy is going through; however, at that age they are just human “Energizer bunnies,” Isn’t that what we like about them! As to your boy’s acting up when you take him out — he should be told the rules and the penalties for not following them before you take him out. If he doesn’t obey the rules, it is important that you follow through, whether that means. Remember, consistency is the key, that’s the way young boys learn. As you are an little over 50 and probably not as active as he is, consider enrolling the boy in some activities, such as swimming or ballet classes. It is so nice watching them in Speedo’s and leotards. I am told there are even karate classes to make them all sweet and sweaty.
