In The Mix Happy February! As we enter the shortest Month of the year many of you will be still recuperating from Super Bowl 49. As I write this, the Seattle Seahawks have just landed in Arizona. By the time you read this you will know the outcome and whether the Hawks did a Re-Pete or not. Either way don’t tell me I don’t want to spoil the game!

We have a local GLBT organization that celebrated it’s 40th year of working for the greater good of our community last Month. The Imperial Sovereign Court of the Evergreen Empire held it’s Coronation and Celebration of 40 years of service January 16th at the Historic Mt. Baker Theater. Newly Elected Empress Mahogany begins her year of fund raising and frivolity and we all wish her this best. Our local Drag organization supports many charities including a Scholarship at Western Washington University as well as “Safe for Free” a condom distribution program educating and assisting all with information and Condoms to encourage Safe Sex. 40 years of service!

February is a fun time in the Betty Desire household. For the last few years I have held a Ground Hog Day party where we exchange “trinket gifts” and watch “Ground Hog Day” the movie. Every time the alarm clock in the movie turns to 6am we blow noise makers and every time someone says the word “Groundhog” we take a sip of a concoction I made up a few years back called a “Groundhog Martini” It’s a delightfully fun way to spend an otherwise bland holiday. If you want to spread the fun, here is the recipe for a Groundhog Martini: mix two quarts Chrystal Light Lemonade with half a fifth of Vodka. Serve in cups with a slice of unpeeled Kiwi (simulating the Groundhog) and add a drop of Grenadine (simulating Groundhog blood) Start the movie and have some fun!

Here’s hoping that the Groundhog doesn’t see his shadow and we have an early Spring!

Oh, Poppets, I have written ad nauseam about my fears that LGBTQ activists will rest once marriage equality is passed. You know my feelings on it. I know my feelings on it. So, no. I am not going to write about the Supreme Court taking up the issue. Do I hope it passes? Yes. Do I think it will? Yes. Am I afraid of what will happen after it does?

Oh hell yes. There. Issue addressed.

Moving on to…February. Valentine’s Day. Are you sick of it yet? After all, it rolled into stores somewhere about December 27th. I have to be honest, though; I’m not. I love Valentine’s Day. But Valentine’s Day tends to be difficult in our community. We spend so much time hearing about how unloveable we are, how wrong, and sick, and unhealthy we are. I’m thrilled to say that’s getting better, but let’s be honest – if we weren’t still hearing those things, I would be able to be excited about SCOTUS taking up marriage equality. It’s just too easy to believe on some level when people say hateful, horrible things.

So this year, instead of focusing only on our partners – or lack thereof, depending on your specific situation – I’m suggesting we focus on ourselves. Focus on what makes us loveable. Unique. Beautiful. Special. Worthy.

Stay away from superficial adjectives, too. Trust me, you won’t always be young, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and thin gets harder the older you get. Instead, focus on longer lasting things. Humor. Kindness. Fashion sense, even. Whatever makes you unique.

We are all our worst enemies. Instead of looking in the mirror and seeing what you always see, try to see yourself through someone else’s eyes. And not the haters we were talking about a couple paragraphs ago. Your friends. Your partner. The people who love you.

We are so good to the people we love. That’s the thing about love. It allows us to see our friends and family honestly (hopefully) but kindly, too. So why can’t we extend that same kindness and generosity to ourselves?

Here’s an exercise for you: Every time this month you realize you are thinking about yourself in a way you wouldn’t let anyone talk about a friend, stop. Set yourself straight (so to speak) the same way you would defend a friend.

Because if someone talked trash about your friend, you’d be the first person to say shut the fuck up. To remind them how your friend is the funniest, most genuine, most caring, most intelligent, most…whatever…you’ve ever known. So, when you hear yourself talking that way – stop. Remind yourself that you are the funniest, most genuine, most caring, most intelligent, most whatever you’ve ever known.

Do this every time this month. No trash talk. No self-doubt. Nothing but love. See what happens. I bet you like it, Poppets, I really do. And yes, be sure to buy yourself chocolates and flowers, too – even if someone else is buying them for you, as well.

You’re worth it, after all.

Last Month saw a horrendous terror attack in Paris France. Two black clad gunmen burst into an editorial meeting of the French Satirical Magazine Charlie Hebdo and opened fire leaving 12 people dead. What ever one thinks about the merits of Charlie’s Satirical cartoons, these writers died for the crime of depicting the Prophet Mohammad which is forbidden in Islamic law. Once again radicalized religious zealots succeeded in carrying out the death sentence. Our hearts go out to the families of those lost.

Free Speech and Freedom of the press are two of the cornerstones of our Democracy, Freedom of Religion is another, yet no one is allowed to scream “Fire!” in a crowded Theater,No one is allowed to print provable lies about another without legal consequences and no one should be free to kill in the name of Religion.

Bellingham, for Bellingham: Community Radio is (Almost) Here!

I’m excited to be part of the Planning Committee of Bellingham Community Radio, a lowpowered (LPFM) non-profit radio station that aims to serve and represent people from all perspectives and backgrounds in Bellingham. The station is not yet on the air but is already streaming at bellinghamcommunityradio.org. Under the auspices of Make.Shift Art Space, we all have an opportunity to create radio that includes local music, Latino/a, youth, LGBTQ, and many other voices. I sat down with two Planning Committee members, Matt Fu and Spencer Willows, ta talk about where we are and where we’re headed—and what we need to get there.

TCQ: Tell me about Bellingham Community Radio.

Spencer: This town loves local things. This is a way for this town to broadcast its voice. We’re at 100 watts which should get about 5-10 miles and we’re already streaming on the Internet at bellinghamcommunityradio.org.

TCQ: What niche would this station fill?

Matt: Everyone knows how much pride there is in Bellingham and for Bellingham and what we create here, whether it’s our local music community or our vibrant political dialog and debate. But we don’t have the space to celebrate one another in the media like we used to.

TCQ: What will the station sound like?

Spencer: One of the great things about Bellingham is that there’s no particular defining identity. We are defined by the breadth of creativity and different voices we have. The radio station will reflect that.

TCQ: What have you heard so far about what people in the community want?

Matt: A lot of environmental concerns, a lot of sustainability concerns that people are excited to get on the air. There’s a lot of local music that people really celebrate in this town and we want a lot of local music on the air. LGBTQ community--obviously there’s the Betty Pages which is wonderful, but you’re not going to get a lot of content into the local media from smaller communities amongst us. The Lummi Nation and Tribal interests are something that I don’t think really have a voice anywhere locally. I don’t hear much Hispanic content on the dial— TCQ: How do you make sure that community is represented in the planning and decision-making of the station?

Spencer: Put a lot of effort into it. You can’t be passive about getting input from the community. By definition an underrepresented group is going to have a hard time making their voice heard.

Matt: It’s not just about having an open door, you can’t be like, “we’re a community radio station—“ Spencer: “Anything goes!”

Matt: “…Where is everyone?” No, you have to actively pursue community engagement.

The degree to which we engage with groups that don’t have a voice right now is going to determine how successful we are.

TCQ: Let’s talk about fundraising. How do you start from zero?

Spencer: We’re in a town that is very generous and forward–thinking about projects like this.

We’re lucky that private donors are helping us get started. We still have a long way to go.

Matt: And community radio is inherently all about engaging thousands of people and the

TCQ: I have a great idea for a show! What do I do now?

Matt: In the next couple of months we’ll test the equipment and make sure that going live is going to work. After that we’ll open the floodgates to people and shows.

But we need energy and bodies. We need people doing the work of building a station. At Seattle’s Hollow Earth Radio, DJs have to volunteer for sixty hours before they can apply for a show. We are asking that people put some time in on this station before it goes on the air.

TCQ: Tell me about local music programming.

Matt: We’re 15 feet away from the local radio library that is accumulating all the music of this town. I’m excited about broadcasting live shows and getting bands for interviews. One of the first shows we’ll have is a local music show that does live performances and interviews.

TCQ: So let’s say I want to give you some money and really support the station. How do I know it’s viable? What can you offer me right now?

Matt: What we can offer you right now is a streaming internet station that’s already live. You have the ability to take a part in founding this station and building this station from the getgo.

TCQ: And we have donor support already?

Matt: Yes! $13,000 so far. That’s almost halfway to our initial first year startup budget. That includes the transmitter site, facility payments, equipment and more.

TCQ: What happens next?

Spencer: We are launching our crowd-sourcing video. And we have a February 22 community meeting. We are really interested in involving the community as much as we can.

TCQ: What’s the best or worst thing that you have ever heard on the radio?

Spencer: I heard cellphone recordings of Moroccan street music. It was so cool and so grainy and really terrible audio, but it was like discovering something in a library that you would never run across if someone had not been broadcasting it.

TCQ: Wow. Cellphone recordings of Moroccan street music may epitomize community radio.

Spencer: Locally produced shows may not have the “polish” that nationally-produced shows have, but I think this town has just as much creativity as Radio Lab or This American Life.

It’s about giving that talent a voice and broadcasting those shows to the community.

TCQ: Alright! So sum it all up. How will community radio save the earth?

Spencer: Community radio can make you feel more comfortable and connected to your home.

Matt: It’s all about people being connected to one another locally.

TCQ: A lot of studies show that we have fewer friends, fewer people we trust. If community radio helps us to know each other and trust each other a little bit more, than I think it has done its job.

Matt: One of the biggest issues is justice in our media. Like so many aspects of dominant institutions in our society, [media is] dominated by white males. With me and Spencer sitting here as white males--it’s hard. This station is not for me, and not for Spencer. It’s for the community. Communities define themselves and have their own notions of what they are and what their strengths are. It’s not for me to define them.

Rope bondage is one of my primary kinks and is one of the BDSM activities that I engage in the most often and the most publicly, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that one of the most common questions I get asked is, “What is it like to get tied up?” This is not, however, an easy question to answer. There are so many ways that it can be, which is one of the reasons I love rope.

Rope is versatile and how it feels depends on several factors. One factor that can really change the experience is the type of rope being used. Rope is generally grouped into two main categories: synthetic and natural fiber. Synthetic rope includes nylon, polyester, and multifilament propylene (MFP). Natural fiber rope includes hemp, jute, cotton, sisal, coconut (coir), and linen. Each type of rope has its pros and cons (which you can read more about at beautyfulfreak.com in the section on rope).

When we started doing rope bondage, we used MFP. It’s fairly inexpensive, easy to find, easy to clean, and comes in many colors. We moved away from MFP early on because it has a low melting temperature which causes it to be easily damaged if it’s left in a hot car and to easily cause rope burn, especially if it is pulled quickly across the skin or through small gaps like the armpits. It doesn’t hold knots as well as natural fiber rope and as we started working on suspensions, it didn’t feel as safe (although there are ways to safely suspend a person with MFP).

Disclaimer: Rope bondage is considered edge play--the risks of harming someone with rope are higher than the risks of many other forms of BDSM play.

Practice with rope bondage outside the bedroom or the dungeon is highly recommended. It gives both the rope top (the person tying) and the rope bottom (the person being tied) a chance to work out certain positions or to experience certain things and discuss them as they happen. There are many great books on rope bondage, some with a focus on Western-style bondage and others with a focus on Shibari-style. There are YouTube videos and tutorials. They can be helpful for learning the foundations, but practice makes a major difference. Nerve damage is the most common risk. It can occur quickly and have long-lasting ramifications.

Because there are such inherent risks, learning rope bondage from a respected rope top is the best option when it is available. Luckily for the people in Bellingham, the Bellingham Sex Positive Center(BSPC) holds Rope Lab twice a month.

It is structured with 45 minutes of instruction on a specific tie or technique with over an hour for people to practice what they want to work on, ask questions, and get advice. It is a wonderful opportunity for both rope tops and bottoms to practice in a “lab” environment. Other opportunities to experience rope bondage are the BSPC’s monthly Kinksploratorium, where rope is always one of the stations available to try, and Shock Therapy at Rumors Cabaret on the third Sunday of every month.

The main reason I prefer natural fiber is that synthetics are plastic and they feel like plastic. This might sound a little woo-woo, but I have experienced that there is significantly less energy flow when I’ve been tied with synthetics. Plastic is an insulator, after all. When I’m tied with synthetic rope, the connection I feel with the person tying me is less. And rope bondage is not so much about tying rope as it is about tying a person, not so much about being tied with rope as it is about being tied by a person. I want to be able to feel the person tying me, their energy, their intensity and I get that more with jute.

So after the physical sensation of the rope itself, another variable is the type of tie. Some rope bondage is sensual, some is decorative, some is functional, and some is sadistic. It all depends on how the rope is applied. There are ties used in traditional Shibari (Japanese-style rope bondage) that are called Semenawa--punishment rope and there are ties that are simple, yet effective, for keeping a partner tied to the bed. Which leads to the next variable: intention.

I get tied in jute rope. It is, by far, my rope of choice for bondage. Unfinished jute rope can be a bit scratchy, abrasive, and stiff to start with, but it softens and becomes “polished” the more you use it or if it is “finished” (which is a bit of a process). Jute that you buy at the hardware store almost always has a distinct chemical smell because it is processed for industrial use with a petroleum product called Jute Batching Oil. Jute that is processed specifically for bondage use from high quality jute yarn has a slight grassy smell. I like the feel of jute and the smell has become familiar and special over time.

The biggest variable in describing how it feels to be tied up in the intention.

What is the purpose of the bondage? Is it to immobilize a partner in a sexually available position? Is it to physically challenge a partner’s endurance or flexibility? Is it to be artistic and creative? Is it to cause a partner to feel humiliation, pride, pain, pleasure, or some other emotion or sensation? The intention behind the bondage changes the way it feels to be inside the bondage. The intention is based on the wants and needs negotiated by the people involved, what they have consented to, and what they enjoy.

Our past drag shows were huge successes, one being sold out in a venue able to hold 220, and the other bringing in nearly 400 patrons, thank you again to all the ones who have made this possible! In this case the “Marcy diet” clearly does not work for you and you should discontinue the diet immediately.

2: For the last 2 weeks you have noticed a decrease in hunger and you’ve been growing sick of candy. In this case I encourage you to stop the “Marcy diet”, take some Advil and call the doctor in the morning. Usually in this case the “Marcy diet” doesn’t work until a few weeks after your visit with your doctor.

And #3: You will notice your energy level sustaining a higher aptitude, a weight loss, a more positive outlook on life, and a more enjoyable meal. Wow! Here we are already in the second month of the year already.

Time flies when your havin fun. Well I hope you’re all having fun.

At least our winter has been mild enough & has allowed us easy transportation to & from our destinations. Soon it will be time to brush off the cob webs from the flip flops & the bathing suits and jump into our favorite lake. But wait. What about that extra candy we ate during the holiday season? We need to work them extra pounds off. Why does this same phrase always seem to come around and haunt me every year? “Extra pounds” losing extra pounds has become an annual resolution for me. If only there was a way to keep the extra pounds from occurring and still be able to eat all those tasty holiday treats.

Well all you reader fans out there I have found a way. It’s called the “Marcy diet”. This is how it works. For every meal you eat have a candy bar (of your choice) on the plate as part of your meal. If you have 3 meals a day (like most people) then you will have 3 candy bars (of your choice) as well. Now after a month of this “Marcy diet” you will notice 1 of 3 possible changes in your month.

Some New Queer Films: A Queer Film Bibligraphy

ISIS Executes Two Gay Men for Being Gay

Here’s a list of potentially queer films, with suspect excerpts from their synopses, from catalogs for four 2014 Indian film festivals. I have seen none of the films listed except THE IMITATION GAME, HOJE EU QUERO VOLTAR SOZINHO and MITRAA (qv). THE IMITATION GAME, while very well acted, is a bit of a slog until the last 20 minutes. I’m rather tired of historical sob stories. And then, Keira Knightely has a speech that sums up everything so neatly, I expected gay genius Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch) to respond, “Do you believe that, or was it written by some stupid scriptwriter?” In these synopses are a variety of queer tales than Hollywood and commercial London may not find financially viable.

All of these films played in festivals in India in the last year, despite the country’s recently re-introduced ban on queer sexual relationships. Some of them may be available at Film Is Truth, the Bellingham Library, on YouTube, Netflix or other internet services. Enjoy.

A ‘princess’ and a ‘butcheress’ “made a habit of cutting meat while praying at sunrise and of humming a love song while riding a tandem at nightfall [until] a lost knight, a trash collector ... came upon this treacherous kingdom and began to sound his horn. “Thus, seduction, betrayal, jealousy and intrigue intertwine [in] barely contained madness, finally proving that fairy tales do not always have happy ending [sic].”

Dominik Graf ’s DIE GELEBTEN SCHWESTERN (BELOVED SISTERS, Germany/Austria) “Rebellious poet Friedrich Schiller and two penniless sisters ... share everything” until one sister becomes pregnant.

Mathew Warchus’ PRIDE (UK) Gay Pride Marchers raise money to support a mineworkers strike. A comedy “based on remarkable true events.” Highly recommended on GAY USA. Bertrand Bonello’s SAINT LAURENT (France/Georgia). One of two biopics on this gay fashion designer.

Like THE IMITATION GAME, an Oscar contender.

From the 20TH KOLKATA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL catalog: Diego Araujo’s FERIADO (HOLIDAY, Ecuador). “Juan Pablo meets Juano, an enigmatic, self-assured black-metal fan ... the two boys’ budding friendship develops int a fragile romance and Juan Pablo is forced to define himself against his chaotic surroundings,” including the fall of Ecuador’s banking system.

Abel Ferrera’s PASOLINI. The last day of Pasolini’s life, in “a blend of reality and imagination.”

Ingo Haeb’s DAS SIMMERMADCHEN LYNN (THE CHAMBERMAID LYNN, Germany). Lynn, also a voyueur, “comes across the call girl Chiara, who offers her services in the hotel, [and] dares to venture out of her cocoon...”

From the 45TH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, in Goa, catalog: Morten Tyldum’s THE IMITATION GAME (USA/UK). (See first paragraph.) Didn’t Alan Turing have any fun?

Laura Amelia Gusman and Israel Cardenas’ DOLARES DE ARENA (SAND DOLLARS). “... the longtime relationship between a beautiful and impoverished young local girl and her wealthy European lover (Geraldine Chaplin) is put to the test as issues of class, inequality and exploitation rise to the surface.”

Daniel Ribeiro’s HOJE EU QUERO VOLTAR SOZINHO (THE WAY HE LOOKS, or I DON’T WANT TO GO BACK ALONE, Brazil). A blind boy walks home from school every day with a girl, until a new male student comes to class ... Highly recommended.

Oliver Assayas’ SILS MARIA (CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA, France). An actress is asked to play an older lesbian, in a play where formerly she played a younger one. A younger actress takes the role of the younger one, to now be seduced on stage by the older one.

Jeon Soo-il’s PINK (South Korea) In a bar named Pink, “the fates of ... two women are intertwined ...”

Ravi Jadhav’ MITRAA (India, qv). India’s freedom means little to a minority that is still denied freedom.

From the 7TH BENGALURU INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL catalog: Hiy Chi-Jan, Shen Ko Shang and Chen Yu-Hsun’s JULIETS (Taiwan ) Three short “post-romantic” films, on three Juliets “regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.”

Siddiq Barmak’d OSAMA (Iran). In a family of three women, the youngest must be disguised as a boy “so that she can get a job to support the family.” No hint of lesbianism, just cross-dressing for survival.

On January 16th ISIS put documentation on the internet showing two men being thrown off a tall building in Mosul, Iraq. The photographs show the bodies being thrown off the building by two masked members of ISIS landing on the ground in front of a waiting, cheering, crowd that proceeds to stone them to death. According to Newsweek “The Islamic court in Wilayet al-Furat (ISIS name for Mosul) decided that a man who has practiced sodomy must be thrown off the highest point in the city and then stoned to death,” this is not the first reporting of executions of Gay people by ISIS who’s interpretation of Sharia law requires them to execute Homosexuals. The first confirmed case occurred in September of 2014. Here is a list ofcountries that find homosexuality punishable by death: Mauritania, Sudan, Saudi Arabia,Yemen, Iran, Somalia, United Arab Emirates, Somalia, parts of Nigeria and parts of Malaysia. There are Fundamentalist Pastors in the United States calling for the execution of Gays and Lesbians based on their reading of the Bible. The latest among them is Pastor Steven Anderson of Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe Arizona. In an interview with an Arizona NBC affiliate when asked if he would advocate killing gay people he responded “What you have to understand is that the Bible commands that certain people be put to death. Not by me,not

by Christians. It’s obviously not my job or the job of any Christian to go out and kill anybody and I’ve never taught anything like that. The onus of executing all the Homos belongs to the government. The Government’s job is to punish criminals and to execute those who commit capitol crimes and according to the Bible Homosexuality is a Capitol crime” Radicalization is dangerous and Christianity is not immune.

Upfront Theatre Offers Improv Class for People with High-Functioning Autism and Social Anxiety

In the spirit of pioneering programs at The Second City in Chicago and Shenanigans in Atlanta, Bellingham’s premier improv school, The Upfront Theatre, is offering a new class in late January designed to meet14 the social skills building need of those with highfunctioning autism, social anxiety, ADHD, and related conditions.

Beginning Tuesday, January 27th, the course will take place at the Mount Baker Theatre’s Encore Room and run every Tuesday for six weeks, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Improv innovator Viola Spolin once said, “The techniques of the theater are the techniques of communicating.” Improv teacher Robin Fox concurs. In an article for the Autism Support Network, Fox wrote: “Early on in my improv training, I realized that improv exercises target and reinforce some of the most basic and successful social interaction skills. Why not use them with our socially challenged kids?”

As described on the Upfront’s website, the goal of the “Improv for Social Skill Building” class will be to slowly build students’ confidence over time, while engaging them in activities may seem uncomfortable. However, the instructors have experience working with students who have specialized needs, and will strive to create an environment that is “supportive, consistent, and fun.”

The Judgement Card is another member of the Major Arcana family. These cards speak to the real reason for the question and they carry a great deal of power in a reading. Some readers feel that a reading which does not contain at least one Major Arcana card may not be valid.

This card is actually A very positive card on many levels rather than being fear inspiring.

The imagery in most decks will be one of an Archangel with the trumpet and the bodies beginning to rise from the grave, giving us a scene inspired by the book of Revelations and thus the designation of this card as judgment.

The Judgement Card is about rebirth, reinvention, re-emergence. This card is suggesting that nothing short of a rebirth is necessary for the growth and continued existence of the individual. It speaks of an ultimate makeover of the soul.

The artwork for this card in the Robin Wood deck diverts from the traditional and shows a female figure rising from a fiery cauldron with the mythical Phoenix behind her. This is an apt depiction of the level of rebirth and reinvention an individual must undertake to fulfill the meaning of this card. In the numerical lineup of the Major Arcana cards the Judgement Card is followed by The World which speaks further about the rewards available to one who undertakes this dramatic rebirth.

When I see The Judgement Card appear in a reading I am lead to understand that no matter what the original question may have been there is a much larger, more complete transformation taking place in the life of the querent. This card tells me that the querent is not just redecorating their life but are undertaking a massive structural rebuild that is calling on all their resources to accomplish.

This card tells me that the querent is so deeply involved that the exhilaration of their own progress is giving them the strength to continue this epic undertaking. This card speaks to us of purification having weathered the storm or passed through the fire there is a new beginning, a new emergence for the individual.

The judgment card can indicate that one has been lost for a period. It can indicate that the individual has struggled mightily with identity with the passion and the motivation to make life livable. This internal struggle is one that can follow us throughout a lifetime, the constant adjusting and realigning so that we are true to ourselves.

I find this card is a strong reminder to remain in constant touch with oneself, with one’s passions, with ones motivations to be perfectly clear about one’s identity. This card stands for all those who have gone before and allowed each of us to fully live our identity.

I also find this card encourages us to develop A real relationship with the self learn to accept and embrace the self as we truly are, without change or adjustment. Developing this relationship with oneself is key to finding inner peace.

It is also key to tapping in to the inner passions and deepest motivations we possess.
