August already! Summer is almost over and we have barely had any sunshine! Here’s to normal Washington weather.
Hope you are all ready because it’s primary time again! Tuesday August 16th is Primary day in Washington and we will be choosing representatives for City and County offices. The top two finishers in each race regardless of party affiliation continue on to the general election. This is a bit confusing to us old folks who remember Washington’s blanket primary when the top finisher in each party advanced to the general election but thanks to the “wisdom” of the US Supremes that way of selecting your leaders has been relegated to the ash heap of political history..If all this primary stuff seems to be happening earlier than usual, don’t worry, your not losing your mind, the legislature moved the primary date from September to August . Why you ask? Who knows!
There is some backlash happening in California over their new law requiring the inclusion of Gay and Lesbian people of merit in the social studies books. The new law requires teaching about the accomplishments of gay and lesbian citizens like Harvey Milk, the nations first elected gay man to public office, who was assassinated by fellow San Francisco supervisor Dan White in 1979. The same people behind Prop 8 that made same sex marriage illegal are mounting an initiative challenge to this law as well. Speaking of unheralded heroism, during the recent terrorist attack on a youth camp in Norway by a self-described

Same sex marriage in New York is happening as we speak! The law granting same sex marriage rights in New York passed last month and now after a 30 day wait wedding bells for lesbian and Gay couples are ringing from Niagara Falls to the Jersey border. Did you know that Washington State recognizes same sex marriages performed in jurisdictions where they are legal? Time to travel to the big Apple with your lover get married, catch a Broadway show and fly home to where apples are king.
“fundamentalist Christian”gunman who killed 76 teenagers. Married (yes same sex marriage is legal in Norway) lesbian couple Hege Dalen and Tori Hansen upon hearing the cry s and gunshots from the camp on a small island got in their boat and sped to the island under gunfire and made four trips back and forth to the mainland rescuing 40 teens who had run into the water to escape the gunman’s bullets. To date the mainstream US press has not reported this focusing on whether the insanity defense will be used in the case and right-wing media mogul Bill O’Reily decrying the use of “fundamentalist Christian to describe the gunman. (the gunman uses this term in his facebook postings and tweets that’s what the term self-described means Bill) You can read more about the heroic acts of these woman at:www. edgelosangeles.com.

In The Mix Bridget Adams
Hi Poppets! I have a news flash: Gay men aren’t a fashion accessory. This should be obvious but apparently, for some straight women, it’s not. Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I need to tell you I am a fag hag to my dear friend, Rob, back in Massachusetts and I wear the title of fag diva proudly for my friend, Don, down in Florida. Here’s the thing though: we worked on our relationships. First and foremost, we are friends. The labels are secondary and partly tongue in cheek. And I have many gay friends with whom it wouldn’t dawn on either of us to use the term at all. There is a debate around the term “fag hag” – is it derogatory, is it complimentary, is it a way of life or single relationship? Its very definition is in question. Regardless of how anyone answers those questions though, my issue is the same. Somewhere along the line, a gay friend has become
a favored trophy for a straight girl. And I have a problem with that. A friend of mine recently had to change his email address and shut down his blog because of a cyber stalker. Her justification was that she was a fag hag so it was all okay. He was supposed to ignore the numerous, lengthy, needy emails that flooded his inbox daily. Ignore her sending mail to his place of business addressed to “My Pickle.” Pretend she wasn’t looking for instant intimacy simply because she was a fag hag. Ummm…no. There are numerous web sites that women can join proclaiming their fag hag status. Most of my gay friends have at least one horror story of being approached at parties or bars by near strangers asking to be, in essence, instant best friends. Sure, we all have communities where we feel more comfortable than in others. Sometimes, that’s
the LGBT community for straight women. I get this. Trust me. But, ladies, just because you are comfortable there doesn’t guarantee every man in the room wants to help you shop, dry your tears or pour out his soul while you eat ice cream tomorrow night. If you consider being a fag hag a title for a single relationship, the way I do, or if you consider it a way of life, it still requires the agreement, consent and affection of the other person. You have to be friends first. You have to get to know him as a person, not as a token. And save the unrequited crushes for movie stars, please. A gay friend isn’t the way to avoid intimacy, isn’t a surrogate boyfriend, isn’t going to love you the moment you walk into his life just because you walked into his life. If that’s what you want, get a dog. Seriously. Until next month, Poppets, take care of you.⁂

Ex Libris: Tales of the City Peter Storm
Tales of the City by Armisted Maupin. One of the ultimate classics of GLBT literature is Maupin’s, Tales of the City series. Tales of the City was originally published in serial form in the San Francisco Chronicle which drew rave reviews and boosted the Chronicle’s circulation dramatically. Set in early 1970’s San Francisco the story follows a group of borders in a rooming house at 28 Barbary Lane, on Russian Hill. It was during this time that San Francisco was becoming famous as the center of the “Gay Movement” following the Hippie and Flower Children era.
Adding to the cast are Edgar Halcyon, Mary Ann and Mona’s boss at Halcyon Communication’s; Halcyon’s debutant daughter Dede; Beauchamp Day, Dede’s bisexual playboy husband; Mona’s ex-lover D’orothea Wilson and Dr. Jon Fielding, who has more parts than Alec Guinness in Kind Hearts and Cornets. Since the series was run as a serial and printed as they were written, Maupin was able to reference to current events which gives a sense of reality (now
In addition Maupin’s use of San Francisco as the stage allows the story to take place in actual places - the Castro, the Endup, the Club Baths, Gibb Memorial Church and Grace Cathedral adding to the story’s realism. Tales of the City spans eight novels: Tales of the City (1978) More Tales of the City (1980) Further Tales of the City (1982) Babycakes (1984) Significant Others (1987) Sure of You (1989) Michael Tolliver Lives (2007) Mary Ann in Autumn (2010). With several characters appearing in Maupin’s novel Maybe the Moon. The later two novels show the characters facing life in middle age with all of the challenges time brings but with their core 1970’s values intact. The series is so popular because of Maupin’s incredible ability to create such human believable characters. Reading the story will make you laugh, cry and dream; of which no higher praise can be said of any book.⁂

Gay Film Bibliography: Mann on Man Bichoo Vrischik
Anthony Mann switched from Broadway in 1938 to Hollywood, and began directing films in 1942. Before his first Western, in T-MEN (1947) and BORDER INCIDENT (1949), an undercover agent silently endures the murder of a secret partner. Paul Willeman in FRAMEWORK (Summer 1981) finds in his westerns a “love/hate rapport of charming ‘villain’ and near-psychotic ‘hero,’’’ who is in danger of becoming that villain. To Mann, a hero is “A man who could kill his own brother” if he had to.

James Stewart, who had worked with Mann in New York, was unable to ask his father “about girls and other people who would approach me in a funny way in the woods or at the toilet.” Meeting the bisexual Joshua Logan at Princeton, they roomed together, and both with Henry Fonda in New York. Mentored by the gay Judith Anderson, and coveted by Katherine Cornell’s husband, he roomed again with Fonda in Brentwood, both MGM-mandated double-dating female stars. (Twenty pages from Cole Porter’s diary covering this period are missing.) MGM’s Mayer, having fired the gay Ramon Navarro and William Haines, worried about Jimmy and Robert Taylor. Cary Grant crushed on Jimmy on the set of George Cukor’s THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (1940), and Cukor rehearsed as Katherine Hepburn his love scenes with her. Jimmy did not marry until forty-one, long after his mother had chided, “You’ve been living with men too much.” Cukor later complained of “all that overmasculine [sic] posturing Jimmy insisted on with those Westerns Tony Mann put out.”
Bold New Ideas
After World War II service as an Air Force pilot, Stewart decided, “I have always enjoyed the company of men.” He and Fonda appeared together in George Stevens’ ON OUR MERRY WAY (1948) the same year he made ROPE for Hitchcock, and hoped to travel the world with Spencer Tracy. His bride, Gloria, “got a little uneasy over Jimmy’s constant attentions to director Anthony Mann; and Laurence J. Quirk in JAMES STEWART (Applause, 2000) quotes a friend, “That’s why she went on location with him. She knew that Jimmy had a complicated makeup – and I’m sure the Mann thing made her nervous.” To Quirk, he was “almost femininely diffident,” before becoming a freelancer and demanding a percentage of his films’ profits. With Mann, “an intense male bonding set in,” Stewart’s ‘sensitivity’ refined Mann’s technique; Mann’s “masculinity reinforced Stewart’s own emergent macho self-image.” In their first film together, WINCHESTER ’73 (1950), Stewart wanted to show his “inner facets … or at least as many as I cared to,” and to Cukor the Stewart-Mann interplay became “one of the great romances of his life, regardless of whether it was platonic or not.” Mann to Stewart “would probe and push [a] new and fresh [performance out of me].” In a story by Stuart Lake, rewritten by Borden Chase (the author of the basis of

RED RIVER), Dodge City is run by an effete, chubby Wyatt Earp (Will Geer, a real life lover of Henry Hay), who twirls a handkerchief in the air on the Fourth of July, the city surrounded by phallic, rifle-like saguaro cacti, in a “jamboree of sado-masochism. Its eponymous rifle a “thinly disguised phallic symbol,” its thief is named Dutch Henry Brown (Stephan McNally), splicing together those of two legendary desperadoes, Dutch Henry and Hendry Brown. Dutch is revealed to be Stewart’s brother just before one shoots the other off a Deleuzean Arizona peak.
In THE FAR COUNTRY (1955), the fourth Mann/Stewart western, again written by Chase, shot in Alberta’s mountainous Jasper Park, Stewart’s cattle and gold-claim are stolen by John McIntire. He is shot in the hand and almost drowned before he shoots McIntire. Their last film together, THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (1955), co-scripted by Philip Yourdon without Chase, shot in New Mexico, is a version of Shakespeare’s KING LEAR. Stewart avenges the murder of his brother (reversing the repeating WINCHESTER ’73) by rifles sold to Apaches after being “jerked down,” according to the dialogue, by Mann’s “perverse puppet-strings” through a fire (by horses), his hand shot again, this time while restrained, his agonized face in Cinemascoped close-up. A halfblind old man falls off a cliff, his gunrunning son (Alec Nicol) is killed by his adopted son (Arthur Kennedy), and the rifles are destroyed by Stewart before the Apaches kill Kennedy. John Ford, the next year, countered this vengeful image of

Stewart in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, having him wear an apron and saddling him with the unwarranted reputation of a reel John Wayne. Stewart returned to his innocent yet confused image in two Hitchcock films, VERTIGO (q.v.) and THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1956) (or as might be inferred from Tania Modleski’ study of Hitch, among THE WOMEN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (Methuen, 1988). Mann then looked at, or re-homoeroticized and tortured, the middleaged Gary Cooper in MAN OF THE WEST (1958), a repressed, walking, riding, fighting, mutilated killer “stripping the man” (Jack Lord) shirtless who may have “aroused him” while he was held in a chair with a knife at his throat and forced to watch Julie London’s enforced strip. (Lord gets to show more flesh than does London.) Robin Wood (CINEACTION, 6/98) finds Mann’s “civilization/wilderness dichotomy as internal” as it is external, to David Boxwell (FILM VICTORIA, 1/21/03) prefiguring the violence of Peckinpah. *

In John Schlesinger’s MIDNIGHT COWBOY, Ratso (Dustin Hoffman) tells Joe Buck (Jon Voight), an innocent in cowboy drag, “that cowboy stuff [is] strictly for fags,” and Joe answers, “John Wayne – you want to tell me he’s a fag?” You can join that Internet discussion by Googling ‘John Wayne gay rumors.’ TIME (12/14/53) did note, in John Farrow’s HONDO, that Wayne “slow walks away from the camera, rolling his muscular buttocks like a male Marilyn Monroe … on five separate occasions.” TIME did not mention that he did so in 3D, with dust swirling around him. “The relationship to the problematic of male narcissism and male homosexuality,” to Stephan Neal, “is always there in the western in any case, providing one of the bases for its cinematic specificity [, but] inscribed differently from the female.”⁂

On BEND OF THE RIVER (1952), scripted by Chase, to Mann Stewart became “a true friend … like one’s other self,” and Stewart regained some youth as a former outlaw scouting a wagon train to Oregon. Arthur Kennedy, not his brother but his partner-in-crime, whom he saved from hanging (reversing the classic THE WESTERNER), drives Stewart “by betrayal to demonic fury” to battle Kennedy and let his body float down the Columbia. Stewart demanded Mann for THE NAKED SPUR (1953), and as a bounty hunter has Robert Ryan push his fingers into his face as they hang from the Naked Spur, a Colorado Rockies peak. Almost hysterical, diabolical, the difficult shoot gave Stewart “a semblance of footloose freedom, reminiscent of
his bachelor days,” crying at the end with Ryan’s body roped on his saddle. Between Mann films, Stewart (no longer ‘Jimmy’) worked with other directors, returning to Hitchcock in 1954 for REAR WINDOW, a film Quirk claims “had nothing to do with homoeroticism.” At least one critic disagrees, even unto the title.
