Contributor Peter Storm has been an avid reader since he received his first stone tablet, Peter owns more books than any normal human would ever feel the need to read. A former contributor to This Week in the City of Honolulu magazine his interests include film, history and world domination.

Miss Betty Desire has been entertaining anyone who would listen in Bellingham for nearly 10 years, and is proprietor of The Betty Pages, the monthly publication that you are reading at this very moment. It is her hope that your perusal of the Betty Pages will enrich your life one chuckle at a time.

Managing Editor Brian Spencer is a local GLBT community member who, in addition to The Betty Pages, works with Evergreen AIDS Foundation, the Imperial Sovereign Court of the Evergreen Empire and Bellingham Pride. As always, remember to “Live well, love much, laugh often.”

Queer Film Historian Bichoo Vrishchik (Scorpio Scorpion) has published in Film Quarterly Sight and Sound, International Film Guide, Filmfare, Youth Times, and Manshots. With a BA from Pacific Lutheran College (1959) and a MA from San Francisco State College (1968), he has also taught film at Western Washington University.

Writer Bridget Adams currently resides in Washington State but that is always subject to change. Lucky enough to be a full-time, if poor, writer, she is most likely somewhere in front of her computer with a cup of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

Photographer D. Colburn Tarpenning II is an avid pugophile, photophile, horophile and achondrophile. When he’s not petting a pug, or his delightful husband, he’s helping where he can with the Bellingham GLBT community and doing full-time social work with Evergreen AIDS Foundation.

June is also Gay Pride Month. Time to dust off the rainbow beads and pride flags and celebrate with friends up and down the coast and beyond. We used to have our celebration the first weekend of June but moved it to July because we got tired of being rained out! It suits Bellingham to have its celebration in July instead of June because true to our nature we just don’t hurry here. Speaking of parades I had a great time walking in the Ski to Sea Parade! The weather cooperated and the crowds were awesome! My favorite part was the kids who started chanting “go rainbow” when the thirty-six foot rainbow flag passed by. June is here! Western is wrapping up it’s year and the city will now settle in to “summer mode.” I love Bellingham in the summer! The pace of the beautiful scenery we are blessed with that is

Look for me and a large group of ‘Hamsters in Seattle Pride this month! Remember, celebrate the hard work that those before us have done so that we can live our lives open and honestly. In The Mix Bridget Adams

It’s that time of year again, Poppets: Pride! You know I love Pride and this year is no different. You can find great events all over the area, including right here in Bellingham. However, since you can find these great events, rather than give you a laundry list – no matter how well written or humorous a laundry list – we’re talking about pride, with a lower-case ‘p’. If you need it, I recommend going here: www.seattlepride.org and here: www.bhampride.org. Now…pride. For every one of us who celebrates Pride, there is at least one who doesn’t. Who takes no pride in being part of our community. Gay men, lesbians, queers, transgendered people, bisexual men and women – people who should be able to take pride, who should feel a part of the LGBTQ community. After all, that’s what the word community means. Yet

they feel no pride, so why celebrate Pride? It would be easy to say they need to get over themselves; to lay it at their feet. It would be easy and, goodness knows, it would be more convenient. If it is their fault, their problem, then we don’t have to look at how we might have contributed to these feelings. After all, no one is responsible for our feelings but ourselves; no one can make you feel inadequate without your permission. Blah, blah, blah. We know all the catch phrases. Honestly, I’m even a fan of these phrases. I believe them to be true. I also believe the overuse of these catch phrases is a cop-out. We use them to be able to insult people, to be cruel, to be dismissive, all while being able to blame the very person we have just tried to hurt if they actually get hurt by the fact that we have just tried to hurt them. How is that even logical?

You don’t want this to be true. I don’t want this to be true. But as adults, we know that wanting something to be different doesn’t automatically make it so. We have to work to change it. I think Pride would be a good time to start or continue that work. Recognize where you have privilege, because most of us carry it somewhere. Watch your humor and your jokes. If someone doesn’t think you’re funny, let that be about you, not about them. Admit that yes, even as the focus of bigotry, we can still be bigoted. Don’t use politically correct words just because you know them; really think about why they are important and change the way you think, not just the way you speak. If we can start here, with Pride, with ourselves, maybe we can open the community to pride. It’s worth a shot. Until next month, Poppets, take care of you – and each other. ⁂

W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M

W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M

But, what does this have to do with Pride or even with us? Because there is a hierarchy within our community. We like to pretend there isn’t. We like to pretend that, as an oppressed group, we come together in unity. We like to pretend we are a united front against those with straight privilege. Sadly, if you talk to more than a handful of bisexual people, you will discover this isn’t the case. If you talk to gays and lesbians of color, you will discover racism is as rampant among us as it is within the straight community. If you get to know transgendered people – do you even know a transgendered person? – you will hear stories of his or her “community” being as judgmental as the cis-world.

Ex Libris: Gods and Monsters Peter Storm

Gods and Monsters, by Christopher Bram. A historical novel featuring the famous director James Whale. Originally titled Father of Frankenstein the novel was renamed following the success of the film. While a work of fiction the book features real life characters such as Boris Karloff, Elsa Lanchester and Charles Laughton. James Whale is best know for his directing of the motion pictures: Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein and the Invisible Man. In addition to his horror films Whale also directed Show Boat. Born in England he became famous for directing Journey’s End a huge success it brought him to Hollywood where he spent the remainder of his life. Following a series unsuccessful films Whale was forced to retire, but due to his clever investments Whale remained wealthy and comfortable. Following a series of strokes Whale committed suicide; drowning in his swimming pool. Gods and Monsters is the story of Whale and his relationship with his handsome yardman Clay Boone. Openly gay through out his entire Hollywood career, Whale attempts to seduce Boone using his considerable charm and class. Although straight, Boone is fascinated by the suave and worldly Whale. Set in the late 1950s, the story takes place against the background of Whale’s memories which flash in and out of his mind due to his strokes.

Although a very short novel (there is relatively little known about Whale outside the bare facts of his life), the book is great fun for monster fans and Hollywood addicts. The film Gods and Monsters (based on the novel) is an excellent adaptation of the novel and stars Sir Ian McKellen, Lynn Redgrave and Brendan Fraser.⁂

Gay Film Bibliography: Camp ‘A’ Westerns Bichoo Vrischik

To Allen Barra, cowboys are repressed heterosexuals, but to Stephan Neale, in GENRE (British Film Institute, 1980), the conventions of the western “function precisely to privilege, examine, and celebrate the body of the male,” although “de-eroticized,” for cinema generally offers “the female body as an accepted and acceptable object on to which deflect the erotic component in the scopophilic drive.” In most westerns, the hero is the ‘Law,’ “the male figure” to Neale “and the mode of [its] movements definitions of masculinity.” Neale quotes Roland Barthes, “a man is not feminized because he is homosexual, but because he is in love.” To Neale “all this is inscribed quite systematically into the westerns of [Anthony] Mann, [Sam] Peckinpah and [Howard] Hawks, where … male narcissism and male homosexuality becomes, if not explicit, at least readily apparent.” I’ve dealt

with Hawks previously, and will deal with Mann later, and now it’s time for a little Peckinpah. A ranch-raised macho, alcoholic ex-Marine, Peckinpah began re-writing scripts for Don Siegel (INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, 1956), Arnold Laven (THE GLORY GUYS, 1966, starring Tom Tryon, a lover of porn star Casey Donovan) and Buzz Kulik (VILLA RIDES! 1968), and on TV for GUNSMOKE, etc., writing and directing THE WESTERNER (13 episodes, 1959-60) with Brian Keith as Dave Blassingame, not to be confused with the William Wyler THE WESTERNER (1940) with Gary Cooper as Cole Harden. In Peckinpah’s first film as a director, THE DEADLY COMPANIONS, Keith is bullwhipped by redheaded Maureen O’Hara (perhaps inspired by redheaded Rhonda Fleming whipping Guy Madison in Harmon Jones’ BULLWHIP three years earlier) for

accidentally killing her son, although he escorts her through Apache wilderness to bury the son. Keith is scarred from the Civil War, O’Hara may be a whore, and sidekicks Steve Cochran and Chill Wills may be deadly. Apaches dress as settlers and vice-versa. But Peckinpah had no control over the script, or editing, and disowned the film. Most westerns take place between 1865 and 1890, according to Jim Kitses in HORIZONS WEST (Indiana University Press, 1970; BFI 1989), a twilight era, to Buffalo Bill Cody “between savagery and civilization.” Between “epic and tragedy,” the heroes are tested against antagonists in “fabulous” conflicts -- the end of that war, the subduing of Indian tribes, wagon trains and railroads headed west, landscapes, physical action, and violence in “a constant drive towards the mythic quality in the hero.” In Peckinpah’s RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, Joel McCrea and

in a Christmas Eve wrestling match as these men choose violence over civilization; it’s no wonder Peckinpah liked Luis Buñuel’s film on Mexican juvenile delinquents LOS OLVIDADOS (THE FORGOTTEN ONES, 1950). To Joan Mellon, in BIG BAD WOLVES: MASCULINITY IN THE AMERICAN FILM (Pantheon Books, 1977), the 1950s ‘B’ western hero and sidekick morphed into the “compulsive all-male relationships of the 1960s,” and worse in the 1970s. To Mellon, in Peckinpah, violence became “inseparable from male bonding,” his “male antagonists in a homosexual fulfillment denied open expression by the masculine mystique and the need to maintain their posture as ‘men.’” If, in THE OUTLAW Jack Beutel as Billy the Kid became a ‘gay icon,’ and in Arthur Penn’s THE LEFT-HANDED GUN Paul Newman’s Billy avenges the death of his English mentor, in Peckinpah’s PAT GARRETT AND BILLY THE KID (1973) Garrett (James Coburn at 45, 15 years too old for the part) avoids his Mexican wife while out of “pathos and passion” pursuing a heterosexually active Billy (Kris Kristofferson at 36, 15 years too old) leaving him shirtless,

Christ-like, dead, as if Garrett had shot himself. In Peckinpah’s “virulent” and “infantile” THE WILD BUNCH (1969), to Mellon, a man is “violent because he possesses male genitals.” By 1913 civilization (subtextually the McCarthyism of the 1950s, the Vietnam war and Peckinpah’s battles with MGM, Columbia, and Warner Bros.) causes him to turn back upon himself in alcoholism and “self-destruction,” now inspired by Japanese samurai remakes of earlier westerns (and vice-versa) in slow motion. “Meanwhile, erotic energy throbs between these men. They take baths together,” Ernest Borgnine and William Holden’s smiles and “eyes meet” after Holden’s lone heterosexual encounter, with a Mexican woman whom he buys like a horse. Upon their death they shout each other’s names, and in a flashback laugh as if in “a homosexual LOVE STORY.” In THE BALLAD OF CABLE HOGUE, Hogue (Jason Robards) often wears long johns and is left to die in the Arizona desert, later to turn the tables on his duplicitous partners, and is bathed by Stella Stevens, only to be accidentally killed by her motorcar. In JUNIOR BONNER (1972), aging rodeo star Steve McQueen returns home to find it bulldozed and his parents (Ida Lupino and Robert Preston) estranged. The cost overruns on HOGUE (including a $70,000 bar tab for the crew) and the failure of the last three films led him briefly to England and to his most misogynistic, surreal western, BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA, in Mexico, in which the only Americans beside the drunken ‘hero’ (Warren Oates) are rapists (Kris Kristofferson) or gay hit men (Gig Young and Robert Webber). After its commercial failure Peckinpah made four more films, none of them westerns. After a life of hard living, Peckinpah died of a heart attack, at age fifty-nine.⁂

Randolph Scott (both having played Wyatt Earp) are ex-sheriffs, and the more ethical one tells Scott, “I hear you been runnin’ around Dodge City with those Earp boys,” so we are sometime after 1876. This is the first of Peckinpah’s savage elegies, with the two easy comrades reminiscing, almost over their old movies and real lives rather than the lives of their characters. (McCrea could have mentioned his two 1932 nude scenes in BIRD OF PARADISE and THE SPORT PARADE; Scott his two films with Cary Grant and his twelve years living with him, being ogled by Mae West in GO WEST, YOUNG MAN (1936) and losing the role of Ashley Wilkes to Leslie Howard in 1939’s GONE WITH THE WIND.) Control was again taken away from Peckinpah in MAJOR DUNDEE (1965), eliminating Major Charlton Heston and Captain Richard Harris reminiscing over “their West Point days,” as was much of the friendly rivalry between drunken James Coburn and Mario Adorf. Suffering from “moral rectitude,” the Major, a fallen Christfigure attempting a “national definition,” destroys everything in his path chasing a renegade Apache into Mexico. Although Coburn and Adorf ’s knife-fight was later restored, they still engaged
