cut all support for Planned Parenthood. Federal law already prohibits funding any abortion procedures but Planned Parenthood was able in the past to receive grants to provide affordable cancer screenings, birth control, HIV testing, and testing and treatment for other sexually transmitted infections. Now because of Indiana’s Mike Pence, Planned Parenthood cannot even accept Medicaid. Here is how this will affect our State: • Planned Parenthood serves over 140,000 women and men in Washington and provides education to 35,000 individuals including parents, students, young adults and families. •In Washington State, Planned Parenthood health centers provide 40,953 STI/HIV screening tests, •38,962 annual exams and 39,010 breast cancer screenings annually, in addition to birth control counseling, supplies and other health care services. •In 2010 alone, 72% of women in Washington who were served through Title X funds (which are now not available to Planned Parenthood) received their care at a Planned Parenthood health center.
Yesterday, I had the honor to attend a scholarship luncheon at Western Washington University. Our local drag organization, the Evergreen Empire (www. evergreenempire.org) sponsors the Brentwood Slide Scholarship for students in WWU’s LGBT programs. We have done so since my first time as Empress in 2000. Along with Brian Spencer (ISCEE Board President and Betty Pages Managing Editor), I had the privilege to meet this year’s recipient, Aysha Kloub. Aysha is planning on becoming a civil rights lawyer with an emphasis in GLBT youth issues. I believe the best way we can affect the future is to invest in its leaders. Our drag organization is embarking on a campaign to raise $20,000 dollars so that our scholarship will become an endowment. As an endowment, the award will become self sustaining, so as long as there is a Western Washington University, there will be a scholarship dedicated to future LGBT leaders. Visit www. evergreenempire.org and click on “Scholarship” to find information that will help you join us in our effort (for as little as 65¢ a day!). To date, this is the only GLBT scholarship specific to Western Washington University. Please consider joining us. Speaking of Federal foolishness, recently the Republican controlled House of Representatives
•In 16 Counties across the state, including ours, Planned Parenthood is the only low-income family planning provider. Keep in mind none of this is about abortion, but about preventative care. The problem now becomes how these women obtain the care and services they need. Maybe Mike Pence’s Church can hold a bake sale. At his official web site Mike Pence says there are many other clinics for women and names a few in Indiana, but what about the low income women in the 16 counties listed above? Indiana, this is what happens when you give a Theocrat power. Don’t know what a Theocrat is? Look it up! Speaking of Theocrats, Kathy Reim, regional PFLAG director personal friend, and mom to many, sent me a link to an article by Philip Irvin. He begins by stating that something needs to be done to curb teenage prostitution. I agree, but then he theorizes that the answer is to “curb Seattle’s unrestrained sexual appetite” and that since “homosexuality is in the vanguard of proclaiming sexual freedom,” he wishes to “end city support of PrideFest… end city financial support of gay tourism…..and end the city’s Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Commission.” He states that, “If we believe biblical values produce the greatest good for society is there any reason we should not aggressively advocate using biblical values as the basis of our culture?” Well I can think of a few… foremost, that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. The reason we have so many denominations in Christendom is because of the many interpretations of “biblical values.” The problem is

no one can agree on whose “biblical values” to codify into law and force on an unsuspecting population. Please do not misunderstand, I do not support teenage prostitution, but some of them who are on the street are there because they were kicked out of their homes by their fundamentalist Christian parents. God I trust; it is humans who mess things up. If you want to lessen the problem of teenage prostitution then start by taking away the reason the kids are on the street. If teenage prostitutes didn’t have to turn a trick for a place to crash, food, money, or to fulfill a deep loss of affection, I have serious doubts they’d be out. What was it we were admonished by Jesus to do? Take over government and impose our interpretation of Biblical Values on the rest of society? No, if I remember correctly, it was feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and heal the sick. Is this an easy problem to solve? Of course not; nothing worth doing is.

Bridget Adams Remember a few months ago, everyone was concerned about LGBTQ youth? We all wore purple, changed our Facebook statuses and patted ourselves on the back…and then went back to our lives with the next news cycle. Except, guess what Poppets? LGBTQ youth are still out there. They are still trying to figure it all out and it’s not necessarily any easier now than it was six months ago.
Poppets, being a teenager wasn’t easy when we were kids. It’s certainly no easier now. Videos and purple shirts and Facebook statuses are fine. They make us feel good. But these folks at Camp Ten Trees…they are making a real difference, every day. Seems to me, the least we can do is enjoy a night out to help them. For more information, go to http:// www.camptentrees.org/ or call 206288-9568. It’s easier than finding a purple shirt and has a longer lasting impact. Until next month, Poppets, take care of you – and each other.⁂ W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M

Luckily, not everyone moved on with the next news cycle. Enter Camp Ten Trees, headquartered out of our very own Seattle. And let me tell you – this is one freaking cool camp. What drew me to their website was an event they are having next month and I promise I will tell you about it (because trust me, you really want to hear about it) but first I have to say that every tab I clicked, every link I followed, took my breath away. For eleven years now, they have been committed to LGBTQ youth and are still the only residential camp in the Pacific Northwest serving the community. Not only do they have a week-long camp for LGBTQ teens,
but they also offer another week for youth, to the silent auction. Add another $20.00 ages 8-17, of any orientation, from LGBT and you get the open bar, instead of having and/or nontraditional families. to pay cash. If you really feel like splurging on a great night out for an even better cause, They offer traditional outdoor activities, $125.00 will get you a VIP ticket: pre-event arts and crafts, and sports. They also offer reception, open bar all evening, first crack at performance opportunities and community the silent auction items, goodie bag, raffle projects. However, underneath the fun ticket, and dinner. surface, the camp’s values of inclusivity, safety and acceptance permeate all the adventures. Don’t worry if you’re busy on the 23rd, These values are so important to Camp though. You can still help. Ex Libris: The Front Runner Peter Storm
The Front Runner, by Patricia Nell Warren, 1974. An all time classic story that should be a required read for everyone. The story covers everything from falling in love, discrimination, generational gaps, sports, tragedy and acceptance.
Between 6 PM and 10 PM

and get one half-price
Published in 1974, the story is set against the backdrop of college/amateur track and field events. Harlan Brown, a former marine and track star from Villanova is a known/suspected gay track coach accepts an outstanding runner, Billy Sive, into his track program. Billy is a handsome young man with a warm and friendly personality and a romance develops between the coach and the runner. Billy proves to be an exceptional runner and is accepted to compete in the Olympics. The story’s tragic ending is heartbreaking and one that haunts me during every Olympic race.
Armistead Maupin paid tribute to The Front Runner in his book Tales of the City, when one of Maupin’s main character’s Michael Tolliver goes to a bar and meets a potential date who mentions that his new shoes are Tigers, ”just like Billy Sive’s. In the Front Runner.” Numerous attempts have been made to film The Front Runner for television and the movies, but nothing has yet materialized.

Warren has written several other successful novels (I recommend The Fancy Dancer, 1975) and reprised her characters in sequels Harlan‘s Race, 1994 and Billy‘s Boy, 1997. An outstanding book that was one of the very first gay novels that was accepted by mainstream readers; due to it’s brilliant writing and engaging characters. The Front Runner was also translated into Spanish: El Corredor de Fondo. W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M

The Front Runner was an instant international best seller. Numerous organizations like The Front Runners, a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender running/walking club started in Los Angeles and expanded to other large cities around the world were inspired by Warren’s novel.

The Pros and Cons of a Hybrid Car Have you pulled your car up to the gas pump lately and been shocked by the high price of gasoline? As you find yourself spending more and more for gas, maybe you thought about trading in your car for something that gets better mileage. Or maybe you’re worried that your car is contributing to the greenhouse effect. The auto industry has the technology to address these concerns. It’s the hybrid car. Of course if you are thinking about a hybrid, you’re best to fully evaluate your needs and your available financial resources. You might find that a fuel-efficient four-cylinder car like the Honda Fit is a better route.
course, if you forget to fill the tank……
Compared to conventional cars, the gas engine in a hybrid is smaller, less powerful, and more efficient. The reason for two motors is in the strengths and weaknesses of both types. Specifically, electric motors help use less gas at low speeds and in idle situations it shuts off entirely. That means during rush hour stop and go driving it is constantly saving fuel and, as an added benefit, it is not producing exhaust thus reducing smog levels. At higher speeds- above 40 mph- the gas motor kicks in and gives it that peppy feel so many car owners look for when driving on the highway. During high power maneuvers such as passing, hill climbing and acceleration from a standstill the electric motor is used in tandem with the gas motor for better response and mileage. Another benefit of having the gas motor is it charges the batteries while it is running. A gas-electric hybrid never needs to be plugged into an outlet, the gas motor kicks in automatically when the battery gets low and proceeds to charge the battery. Of
Other techniques that are not necessarily ‘hybrid’ features, but that are frequently found on hybrid vehicles include: Shutting down the engine during idle periods, improving aerodynamics, using roll resistant tires and powering the A/C, power steering and other auxiliary pumps electrically as and when needed.
W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M
First off: What is a hybrid car? Basically, it’s a normal, fuel efficient car that has two or more major sources of propulsion power. Most hybrid cars currently marketed to consumers have both a conventional gasoline engine and electric motors, with the ability to power the vehicle by either one independently or in tandem. The most commonly referred to hybrid vehicle is the Hybrid-Electric Vehicle
(HEV).
8
W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M
Hybrids have more fuel efficient engines, reduce fuel use during idle, capture wasted kinetic energy through regenerative braking and the reduction in fuel use translates to a reduction in carbon emissions; therefore driving a hybrid benefits the drivers pocket and the environment as well. Now you may be wondering “What could possibly be the down side?” The first obstacle anyone interested in buying a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle will run across
is the higher cost of the hybrid power train versus its gasoline –only equal. Hybrid versions generally run several thousand dollars more than the conventional versions of the same car. Hybrids have had to undergo a great deal of research and development and their production requires a large amount of intricate electronic and engineering construction as well as costly parts such as the lithium-ion batteries. Hence the higher cost. Many hybrid owners justify the higher initial cost of the car by saying that they’ll make up the difference in fuel savings. Well, that plan may take a little (or a lot) longer than most owners think. Oftentimes, it can take several years to make up the higher initial cost. Fuel economy depends on driving style. Drivers can find that real mileage from hybrids can actually be 10% or more under the mileage

So what is a smart car buyer to do? Knowing why you’re buying a hybrid makes your decision easier. Some buyers want to save money, but savings aren’t always easy to calculate. If you have a long commute and are doing most of your driving in the city or stop and go traffic; the savings can add up quickly. Heavy long-distance commuters and lead footers will see few savings. Plenty of buyers are interested in reducing emissions. Once again, the balance comes from your driving habits. There are many ways to reduce emissions- using public transportation, car pooling, riding a bike or scooter and even walking. Just buying a smaller, fuel efficient car makes a big difference. You are best off evaluating your own needs. For some a hybrid will make perfect sense but others may find a better option for them. Some gasoline- only vehicles are nearly as efficient as hybrids and they are getting better all the time. The new 2012 model Honda Civic, alone, has increased its mileage rating nearly ten miles to the gallon compared to the previous 2011 model. All-electric vehicles are appearing on the market and with new technology every day alternative fuel options are expanding as well.

Hybrid cars also don’t drive exactly like cars we have been driving for decades. For one thing, the tires are tiny, which changes the feel of the car on the road. For another, the idle-stop technology is often noticeable and can (at times) be a bit clunky. And finally, hybrids are just not performance cars. Quick acceleration and blistering top speeds are not on the hybrid’s list of pluses. (Although you may want to check out the new Honda CR-Z hybrid)
The choices are expanding rapidly so, do your research and consider other ways that may better help you to achieve your goals. For more information email stacy@northwesthonda.com or samb@northwesthonda.com. -Stacy Harris and Sam Baylasy The Northwest Honda Girls

actually claimed. You must pay close attention to how you are driving to actually get the mileage stated. Drive slow (keeping it under 65mpg on the highway helps), no jack rabbit starts, braking early when approaching a stop to start the idle cycle earlier and minimal use of A/C all need to be considered. The tires are specifically selected for the best gas mileage so you don’t want to swap for bigger or fancier wheels and you need to make sure to keep your inflation at the proper levels.

Gay Film Bibliography: Camp ‘B’ Westerns Bichoo Vrischik
Paul Roen, in HIGH CAMP: A GAY GUIDE TO CAMP AND CULT FILMS, Vol. 1, (Leyland Publications, 1994) asks, “What can there possibly be for us in the genre that John Wayne made his own?” but immediately answers “Well, quite a lot.” Roen divides gay camp films into seven categories, and gay camp westerns into three: 1) those with “a woman in the traditional tough guy role,” 2) those with an emphasis on “the ‘buddy’ relationship between two cowboys,” and 3) “The juvenile B-grade westerns of the Thirties, Forties, and early Fifties,” their sensibilities
thereafter taken over by TV and Nashville. Roen’s definition of “high camp” is not that of Susan Sontag (he sees ‘high,’ or intentional camp in films more often than she does), and he hopes to “sensitize the reader to … latent gay content,” to “turn on his local late-night movie and discover, on his own, the wealth of homoerotica that is waiting for him.” In sound films, that is; HIGH CAMP excludes silent cinema.
The Hawks/Hughes 1943 THE OUTLAW has already been covered in these pages, and Roen concurs that Jack Beutel (as Billy the Kid) is a “homoerotic icon.” And he’s more interested in the brooding, In William sleepy-eyed second lead, David Bruce, in Witney and John Charles Lamont’s SALOME, WHERE English’s Republic SHE DANCED (1945), than in Yvonne serial ZORRO’S W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M
W W W. T H E B E T T Y P A G E S . C O M
The earliest western in Vol. 1 or 2 (the second was prepared in part from “detailed suggestions” from readers) is ex-drag performer Harry Fraser’s WILD MUSTANG (1935), to Roen “an unintentional allegory of male rape and seduction.” An outlaw gang sits upon and brands (but only on the back of a hand) “good-looking guy[s],” marking them as pariahs, leaving them with “no alternative but to join the gang.” At night, in their “cozy cabin,” their hatchet-faced leader tells them, “All right boys, you can turn in or do anything you want to.” Roen infers that some might not sleep right away.
FIGHTING LEGION (1939) Reed Hadley, who Roen finds more convincing as a fop directed by English, than as his alter-ego Zorro, directed by Witney, in the Busby Berkeley-inspired action scenes, shot and edited in shorter takes than in previous westerns, enabling actors to draw their breath and begin again, the camera to change positions, and the audience to get closer to more sustained action. Roen calls this serial “surrealistically fluid.” And there’s a bit of male nudity among the ‘Yaqui’ Indians, particularly two musclebuilt guards, and some S&M involving a lava pit, subbing for a more expensive volcano. Witney went on to direct several Republic Roy Rogers westerns, including EYES OF TEXAS (1948), hogtying and ripping the shirt off his back before Roy’s saved by Andy Devine; and their THE GOLDEN STALLION (1949), not mentioned by Roen, is one of Quentin Tarantino’s favorites films. In 1959, Witney turned to TV, directing many episodes of HONDO, BONANZA, TARZAN, and more ZORRO. Rouben Mamoulian’s THE MARK OF ZORRO (1940) stars bisexual Tyrone Power posing as that same fop, Basil Rathbone comparing “him to a fruit,” although a priest squeezes the tightbreeched fop’s biceps claiming, “I feel good muscle here.” Roen sees the same in any man’s tight pants.

Republic. Here, as a ‘copper-penny doxy,’ Ralston forms a ‘buddy’ relationship with Joan Leslie, traveling from New Orleans to Los Angeles to open their own saloon. A financial disaster, JUBILEE TRAIL ended Republic’s attempts with big budgets, and the beginning of its slide into television. Two 1958 Allied Artists films end HIGH CAMP’s B westerns: Harmon Jones’ BULLWHIP, with Guy Madison, and Edward Bernds’ QUANTRILL’S RAIDERS, with Steve Cochran. In BULLWHIP, a very loose adaption of Shakespeare’s TAMING OF THE SHREW, Rhonda Fleming bullwhips Madison before admitting she loves him, in between claiming that no matter what she does “He won’t even come to my party.” (If you can find this one, make sure it’s letterboxed, as Madison’s best shirtless scene (there are two of them) has him to the extreme right, and the supine Rhoda to the extreme left.) In QUANTRILL’S RAIDERS, Steve Cochran’s suspenders disappear just as his shirt is ripped open and he’s tied to a chair, leading to a close-up “of his nipples and hairy chest-flesh straining against the cords.” One such publicity still “has been on display in [Roen’s] bedroom for well over a decade,” evidencing by the late 1950s how “far and how unexpectedly homoerotica [could] penetrate.” In Edward F. Cline’s MY LITTLE CHICKADEE, for Universal, the only Mae Western included by Roen, she sings “Willie of the Valley.” But Mae, gay icon that she is, will have to wait for another day.⁂
