Don’t Ask Don’t Tell has been repealed, so now Gay men and women in the military can serve and die for their country without having to hide and lie, or worry about blackmail by a fellow service person ending their careers. This repeal won’t go into effect until 60 days after the military chiefs, Secretary of Defense and President agree that the change will not harm military readiness so wait a bit before you bring your lover to the Officers Club.

Our States Domestic Partnership Law successfully survived a challenge at the ballot box in 2009 making it the first time voters at the polls refused to take away rights granted to our community anywhere in the country. Yea Washington!

On a lighter note, if you can make it, come see me and the rest of our 35-year-old, loosely-knit drag organization (actually, it has come a long way in the last 10 years too, and is one of the leading LGBT non-profits in Northwest Washington) for Coronation 2011, CLUE, a Drag Murder Mystery, January 14, 15 and 16. 10-year anniversaries as Empress of the Evergreen Empire, and we’ll be crowning the new Emperor and Empress for 2011.

Welcome 2011! By now, all of you should be almost done nursing your hangovers and ready to tackle the second decade of the second millennium (this only applies to about half the world China and India are 2000 or so years ahead of us “late comers” to civilization) like a crazed hockey player on crack. Our community has come a long way in the last 10 years. Gay sex was still illegal in many states until the Supreme Court changed that 10 years ago.

Recognized same sex marriage was merely a dream then. It wasn’t until May 17th of 2004 that the first legal same sex marriages were performed in Massachusetts. Today you can marry in 5 states, the District of Columbia, and at least one Tribal jurisdiction! Domestic partnerships or Civil Unions are available in 9 more states but only protect you within the borders of those States. (Probably done to help instate tourism) California legalized same sex Marriage, only to have the voters rip it away in November of 2008. A Federal

Court case is working its way up the snarled judicial system that holds some promise of overturning that “tyranny of the majority” vote. The Defense of Marriage Act which bars the Federal Government from recognizing same sex marriages performed in states or countries where they are legal is still the law of the land. A Federal Court case is seeking to change that and it has the support of the Obama administration, but the Justice Department didn’t read the memo and is actively defending DOMA in the case. (They say they have no choice, but there is ample evidence to the contrary)

Happy New Year, Poppets! Have you recuperated yet? Are you ready to start fresh in 2011? Because that’s what new years are for, right? Fresh starts, resolutions, changing who we are, all that. Only…I don’t believe that. As I have written here before, I am all for making personal changes; I am not a fan of the pressure to make said changes based on the turn of the calendar.

When I worked in human services - a long time ago, in another life – we would often get people who had made it through the holidays, made it through New Year’s, but would show up in our offices sometime between mid-January and mid-April, horribly depressed because once again they had failed to lose weight, quit smoking, save money, whatever their resolution had been. They had used this time to try to stop being self-destructive even though there is no reason to think it will work any better now than it does on a random Tuesday in March. But they beat themselves up as if they had failed at something simple.

I was talking to David about this the other day, explaining why I don’t like New Year’s resolutions, when he said something that struck me. He said that there are people who hold out for this particular turn of the calendar with the hopes of not just making a change, but the hopes of forgiving themselves for the past year’s (even years’) sins. They use whatever resolution they make as a manifestation of that forgiveness.

But the forgiveness isn’t really there, so the resolution doesn’t stick. When the resolution doesn’t stick, it just proves we don’t deserve to be forgiven. And if we aren’t forgiven, then why do we deserve to stop being self-destructive? It’s a cycle.

Ugh. We’re starting the new decade in some hard times. Either you or someone you know – or more likely you and someone you know – have lost a job, taken a pay cut, is barely paying bills or or won’t be able to see a doctor if our state’s Basic Health Care Plan is cut in 2011. Folks in the other Washington seem to think that the rich need more handouts than we do. Sometimes it seems like everything is a losing battle.

began his program one night asking people to call in with tips on how they were surviving. His first caller said that he ate a lot of ramen noodles, but gave them a kick with some hot sauce and added some frozen veggies. Another caller responded with her own recipe for ramen noodle salad. It wasn’t long before every caller was excitedly talking about ramen and suggestions filled the airwaves.

We stand to lose many of the services and community organizations we depend on during hard times, services that I can’t imagine us living without, like health care, disability aid and hospice.

But what seems most irreplaceable to me is the loss of community, the loss of connection, the loss of each other.

Computers and cell phones isolate us, depression and hopelessness can make reaching out to friends and family seem almost impossible. But surviving, and cheering and nurturing and even sometimes laughing together is maybe one of the most important things we can do to help ourselves and our loved ones get through this.

I don’t remember a single recipe I heard that night. What stood out for me was the way the conversation and tone changed through the evening. The callers became more and more animated and warm, the talk show host was laughing and amazed that his show had been hijacked by a package of noodles. Thinking about what’s going on and how to handle it reminded me of another time when people where struggling: back in the the Regan era. A lot of programs had been canceled and aid reduced, and folks had a hard time trying to make it each day, feed themselves and their families and just be OK.

If you’re bundling up to kick some tires, you may find your pick of cars on the lot and salespeople willing to make deals.

Most people think between Christmas and New Years is the best time to buy a car, but January and February are often better. Once the Holiday season is over, snow days can keep people away from dealer lots and preparing for tax day keeps others away as well. There are usually great New Year specials and always rock bottom pricing on any remaining 2010 models.

The No. 1 cost that new car owners face is not gas, maintenance or insurance; it is depreciation. If you buy a 2010 model remaining on the lot in 2011 keep in mind it has already depreciated in value.

A left over model, in general, can be a good deal if you drive a lot of miles or keep your cars for 5 or more years. If you like to buy a new car every 2-3 years you may want to look into the specials on the 2011.

Are you considering a Hybrid purchase?

Hybrid prices this time of year are often best. People travel on the road less in winter so they are not as concerned with gas mileage which means lower sales and better deals for you. Test driving a hybrid in winter conditions is a good idea, with the different auto ON/OFF function and gas saving modes handling is often quite different in winter. While there are now many different All Wheel Drive models available keep in mind what you need the vehicle to do for you. If you need AWD year round it may be worth looking into, if you only need it when the weather is bad the cost difference may not be worth it. Keep in mind winter tires and chains are always an option.

The Elements of winter are typically something most people would rather not have their car exposed to. A lot of people consider purchasing an inexpensive choice just for winter. Not only does it keep your other vehicle or vehicles looking good, but you can also have another vehicle that

is easier to drive in the cold snow. There are many damaging things about driving in winter such as gravel on roads, unseen obstacles and scratching from built up ice; but another major hazard is of course other vehicles. A fender bender on an older beat up car is quite often preferable to smashing up your favorite car. Once again slower traffic at dealerships and quite often a number of people upgrading their AWDs, this time of year is also a great time to find an inexpensive winter driving option.

Just like people winterize their vehicles, think about winterizing your approach to buying a car. Winter is a great time to test traction, especially important on a used car. It is also the perfect time to see how fast they defrost and heat, every car is a bit different. Heated seats are a nice addition to your comfort on a frigid morning, but they do add extra expense and before leather heats up it can be very chilly. Focus more on tires than you would in spring or summer. Winter tires are a great addition but not always necessary in milder winter climates. If you are considering a vehicle with high performance tires you may also want to consider investing in snow tires for winter. Many cars now come with All Season tires so an addition of cable chains is sometimes all you need. Ask questions and check your traction. Remember, nothing will hold traction well on ICE. Typically the best winter cars focus on All Wheel Drive systems, heated seats and mirrors, engine block heaters and so forth.

These features cater to physical need; however for many their car represents an emotional investment. Yes “getting there” is important, but you need to feel good about it as well. There are more options for winter than you may realize and this time of year any salesperson will be happy to help find the perfect one for you.

Born in Puerto Rico as Haroldo Santiago Franceschi Rodriguez Danhakl, Woodlawn moved with her family to Florida. But, it was in the early 1970s, in New York, that Holly Woodlawn became legendary as one of Any Warhol‘s Superstars and the star of the cult movie Trash.

A side note - one of the book’s photos shows Holly and a very young and handsome John Sex in the production of The Sound of Muzak, before his mile high hair.⁂

Her story provides a fascinating insight to the early “Pop Art” culture and underground entertainment industry. Woodlawn discusses Warhol, Devine (they were in a number of off-off Broadway shows together) and Max‘s Kansas City with real honesty and candor.

It has been running for over 3 years from a residence at 717 N. Forest St. about a block from WWU. Our continually growing collection at this point includes well over 3000 high quality books, which are handpicked by the library patrons. All books are purchased for the library from a request list, assuring that the books we carry are all things that will be checked out and not sit

idly on the shelves. In choosing which books will be added to the library collection, we are actively trying to redefine the mainstream and support progressive thinking in all venues.

Forming and strengthening diverse communities is one of the primary purposes of the Alternative Library. On top of being an educational center, we also function as a community hub.

We play an active part in Bellingham’s Food Not Bombs, serving free food in front of the Federal Building every Friday at 4:00 PM. Our library and

The Alternative Library offers an easy opportunity for motivated self-educators to find radical and progressive resources to expand their mind. In reaching out to people from marginalized communities, we aim to build solidarity by integrating these silenced voices with the much heard voices of dominant culture.

Gay Film Bibliography: Through Iron Eyes Bichoo Vrischik Real, if painted Indians, Sioux braves to be exact, appeared in front of Thomas Edison and William Dixon’s Kintoscope as early as 1894, performing a GHOST (or SPIRIT) DANCE and a BUFFALO DANCE, along with Annie Oakley and a bucking bronco, only the last photographed outside Edison’s little studio.

All four items were by then part of ‘Buffalo Bill’s Wild West” show. The banning of the Ghost Dance, Christian-influenced and by 1890 danced to fight the White invasion of Sioux land, had brought the arrest and death of Sitting Bull, the Sioux hero of Custer’s Last Stand, aka Little Big Horn, aka Wounded Knee Creek.

In fact, according to Wayne Michael Sarf ’s GOD BLESS YOU, BUFFALO BILL (Associated University

Presses, 1983), in 1911 members of the Arapahoe, Cheyenne and Chippewa tribes “demonstrated on the steps of the Capitol building [in Washington DC] in protest against the image of their race presented by silent films.” Homogenized as “painted warriors” of the Plains, feathers stuck in their inauthentic headbands, Native Americans (or white men) often played members of tribes other than their own, employing means of warfare unlike their own, based on white men’s misconceptions.

Sarf decries the use of George O’Brien’s Army Colt .45 ‘Peacemaker’ in THE IRON HORSE (1924), set in 1869, but not issued to the public until 1875. Able to shoot six ‘Indians’ at a time, thereafter it was anachronistically used by DeMille et al, allowing gunfighters (themselves improbable before 1869) to wear reverse quick-draw holsters, uncommon before 1900. (Dewey Martin’s rotating cap-and-ball double long-barrel in THE BIG SKY is more accurate, if less efficient and less phallic.) Also anachronistic are the Winchester rifle and Gatling gun before 1866, Nobel’s dynamite before 1867, and the gambler’s Remington .41 before 1871. Sarf decries inaccuracies in white men’s civilian and military costumes, but nothing below Indians’ headdress, ignoring their often semi-nakedness – or George O’Brien’s, for that matter.

Unlike in his younger brother’s THE IRON HORSE, in Francis Ford’s 41-minute THE INVADERS (1912), on the breaking of treaties via Union Pacific’s railroad surveys, seen partially through Sioux and Cheyenne eyes, it’s the white men who are the invaders, not the Native Americans cast from the Miller Bros. Wild West Show. Sicilian Iron Eyes Cody’s (Espera DeCorti’s) autobiography IRON EYES: MY LIFE AS A HOLLYWOOD INDIAN (Everest House, 1982) begins as a bit-player, 24-year old Gary Cooper, in a loincloth, one chilly morning is sprayed with bole armenia (burnt umber), make-up used

Some early films were actually directed by Native Americans. Pathé Frères, to stem the criticism of in-authenticity in their European Westerns, opened a studio in New Jersey, hiring a Winnebago, James Young Deer (nè J. Younger Johnston), already an actor, writer and director, to direct the 11-minute WHITE FAWN’S DEVOTION (1910), an interracial romance. Modestly loin-clothed, none of the ‘Red Indians’ get anything like a close-up, except a jealous, unidentified male who tackles a white man, and who mysteriously alone wears dark Long Johns. Again I ask, why, because he’s not Indian? Or because in 1912 even Native flesh so close to white eyeballs would be forbidden? And what’s the difference? If he’s Indian, then the fear of Native flesh must keep this brave inside his all-encompassing underwear; if not, it’s the same thing. An advocate of Indian rights, Young Deer changed the end from tragic to reconciliation.

But his RED DEER’S DEVOTION (1911, now lost), shot in California, by reversing the sex of the lead couple, an Indian male and his ‘white’ bride living happily ever, enraged critics. Consequently, Young Deer directed films in the U.S. only through 1913.

Cody wrestled voodoo snakes in gay James Whale’s African GREEN HELL (1940), with Douglas Fairbanks Jr., continually bailing his

drunken friends out of jail. He saw Hughes fire Hawks on THE OUTLAW (1943): “From now on I’m directing this picture,” Hughes said, ignoring its equilateral, male triangle for Jane Russell’s breasts. Olympic gold medalist Bright Path (Jim Thorpe) dug WPA ditches, like bareback Burt Lancaster in Michael Curtiz’s JIM THORPE -- ALL AMERICAN (1951), and in reality as a drunken bit-player flattened drunken Errol Flynn. Flynn then flattened his own bigoted stand-in, thereafter casting manly Thorpe in THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE, a new CAPTAIN BLOOD, until THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON. Flynn wasn’t gay, but perhaps anal and necrophiliac: “I’m just telling you what I observed and felt.” Clashing with DeMille on teepees in THE PLAINSMAN (1937, Gary Cooper) before its success, Cody peyoted as a cowboy, grinding his hips against senoritas to marimbas alongside bi-Tyrone Power, gay Cesar Romero, and sometimes Jay Silverheels at the Zarape club until, exhausted, my little chickadee (1940), he ran away to Barnum and Bailey to wrestle Hopi snakes at Madison Square Garden. Later, Cody found Disney as conservative as “Buffalo winters are chilly,” and Sidney Salkow’s SITTING BULL (1954) made him a “star.”

But in gay George Sidney’s ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (1950), “Sitting Bull was portrayed by Chief Thunder Cloud [as] the same old stereotype.” The real Sitting Bull had war-painted a hotel mural of Buffalo Bill kneedeep in buffalo shit, “squatting and crapping.”

“The hotel painting scene was [in] the script, but [Sidney had it rewritten] to show Sitting Bull shooting out all the lights with his sixshooters.” In A MAN CALLED HORSE, Cody got to hang masochistic Richard Harris by hooks under his (fake) exposed pectorals from a cottonwood tree, as late as 1970. He cried for environmental conservation in a famous TV ad.

After his wife of 42 years, Birdie, died, Iron Eyes placed an eagle feather in her hand, and drunk and on pills attempted suicide by lying naked in snow, awakened by angry geese pecking at his body. He sobered up, married again, a massage therapist, Sandy Redfeather, and began to refuse projects that were “not fair to Indians,” like David L. Wolper’s “bloody” Dakota 5-hour miniseries HANTO YO (THE MYSTIC WARRIOR, 1984). In the next life, Iron Eyes knew, he would see Sandy again, with a feather in her hand.⁂

to make white men and light-skinned Natives more ‘Indian’ (Cody endured it himself, and James Cagney), for George Sykes’ THE VANISHING AMERICAN (1925). Coop, from Montana via London, lean, had blue eyes, fluttering eyebrows, the beginnings of a limp, decidedly not what DeMille called a “Red [Indian] Beer Belly,” rode, shot, and learned to fall off cliffs. Real Sioux and Arapahoe appeared in THE COVERED WAGON (1923), and buffalo were imported from Yellowstone Park to Nevada for long-shots. Also shot in Nevada, THE IRON HORSE advertised O’Brien as “A Man’s Man and an Idol of Women.” Cody drank with John Wayne before Wayne’s “swagger, rolling hips,” and dropped “gs” of STAGECOACH (1939). He played Mohawks, partied in Tijuana, and toured Western-crazed Germany. Gene Autry’s campy Western musical METROPOLIS serial, THE PHANTOM EMPIRE (1935), first cast Autry as Autry; later Autry held fancy Roy Rogers at gunpoint, forcing him to sing, at Republic, their sidekicks Smiley Burnette, Gabby Hayes, or Andy Devine.
