Managing Editor Brian Spencer is a title-holder and board member with the ISCEE, aside from his involvement with various community organizations and work in graphic design. Queer Film Historian Bichoo Vrishchik (Scorpio Scorpion) has published in FILM QUARTERLY SIGHT AND SOUND, INTERNATIONAL FILM GUIDE, FILMFARE, YOUTH TIMES, MANSHOTS, and now THE BETTY PAGES. With a BA from Pacific Lutheran College (1959) and a MA from San Francisco State College (1968), he has also taught film at Western Washington University. His main interest is Indian cinema and articles on it are forthcoming.

signatures for the initiative, but also to educate people about cannabis “I can’t change this on the federal level, but I can on the state and culture. that’s my goal,” said Ensley.⁂ Yes We Cannabis is being led by Lydia Ensley, who said that people are often not aware of the culture and that they don’t have to be ashamed of it. She wanted to create a place where everyone can fight the fight.

“To bring in and share my own experience is the only way we can learn,” said Ensley. “This will help create wide spread acceptance.”

While the main goal for Yes We Cannabis is putting a full faith effort to ensure the initiative is on the ballot, it’s also to provide a safe space locally for information, education and community space about all things cannabis.

Ensley said after meeting with Sensible Washington, she realized more was needed and isn’t trying to take away from what they are doing.

“I want to ensure this is done everywhere not just in Washington,” said Ensley. “I’m working cooperatively with them (Sensible Washington), they run theirs and I run mine, but it works well together.”

She reiterated the need for change with medicinal marijuana as well, stating that the damage done isn’t just to property in a raid or leading to someone being arrested, but many people go through months, if not years of court proceedings to clear this up and experience a lot of heartache and emotional distress from this.

“I have a dream that Bellingham could have a cooperative growop,” said Ensley. “Education is key and I want to stop people from being scared.”

In order to become more aware of the issues facing people, Ensley attended what is normally a required or mandatory drug assessment class for those arrested and convicted of possession.

She paid her $60.00 and sat through an eight hour class where she was presented information from an accredited drug and alcohol counselor. However the information she received didn’t have a source sited and when she addressed this with the counselor they stated, “You can find it on Google, and it’s all factual. No need to site.”

There is something for everyone at SEAF. You can wander through the gallery and experience fine and interactive art, purchase special curios or prints from the museum quality store, relax on the unique furniture, and play until you just can’t smile anymore.

The environment is as conducive to the curious neophyte as it is to those with a masterful sense of expression. One can watch the amazing drama on stage—or be part of it off stage if preferred.

The only rules, it seems, is be considerate and respectful of other human beings and bring your I.D.

Start getting your moxy on for a little bit of naughty and a whole lot of nice.

But keep in mind, the best reason to attend the festival is to support healthy, joyous people in a righteous endeavor to educate the masses.

Gay Film Bibliography: The Talented Mr. Ripleys Bichoo Vrischik Robin Wood suggests that Robert Walker in STRANGERS ON A TRAIN as Bruno drew Hitch’s primary attention, ignoring “the disturbing implications of his hero’s [Farley Granger as Guy’s] behavior.” Like the killers in Hitchcock’s ROPE (q.v.) and the real killers Leopold and Loeb, the alcoholic Bruno is Dionysus to Guy’s circumspect Apollo. But unable to cast William Holden as Guy, Hitchcock was forced to direct the straight Walker against the bisexual Granger, with Bruno no longer able to convince Guy to commit murder. “Hitchcock’s most satisfying endings,” to Wood, “express catharsis” but those of the novel’s author, Patricia

millionaire Herbert Greenleaf to sail first class to Italy and bring back Herbert’s errant son, Dickie (!). In Italy, Tom is attracted to Dickie and his lifestyle, jealous of his American girlfriend, and kills him, assuming his identity. The film rights were sold in France, where Highsmith had more of a following than in the U.S., and was adapted as René Clément’s PLEIN SOLEIL (BLAZING SUN, aka PURPLE NOON, 1961) with Alain Delon as an unconvincingly American but sexy Tom and Maurice Ronet as the now renamed Philippe Greenleaf. (‘Dickie’ doesn’t work as a pun in French). The gay subtext appears most clearly in the relationship between Tom and the Italian police inspector who interviews Tom, sitting in bed with his shirt unbuttoned, in a hotel room. The inspector accidentally opens Tom’s closet door, revealing but not noticing Philippe’s clothes therein. The greatest change from the novel is the implication that Tom gets caught.

At least one of four biographers, Andrew Wilson in BEAUTIFUL S H A D O W (Bloomsbury, 2003), agrees that Highsmith’s two greatest inventions are STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and the “charming psychopath” Tom Ripley.

The poor, rejected Tom, “vaguely handsome” and homosexually repressed, wishing to be someone else, in THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY (McCann, 1955), is hired by

Highsmith created several criminals similar to Ripley, particularly in THE SUSPENSION OF MERCY (1965) and THE TREMOR OF FORGERY (1969, filmed by Peter Goedel as TRIP NACH TUNIS (TRIP TO TUNIS, 1993)), and finally unearthed Tom in RIPLEY UNDER GROUND (Random House, 1970). Now a front for an art forger, Tom lives in France surprisingly not on Dickie’s allowance, which had been signed over to him after Dickie’s supposed suicide, but on his own wife’s inheritance. There are two more murders, and Tom is prematurely buried. Some scenes were dramatized for British TV in 1982, with Jonathan Kent, to Highsmith “the best Ripley I have seen since Alain Delon,” and it was fully filmed

Highsmith, do not. Rather, one working title of the novel was ‘The Other Side of the Mirror.” In it evil destroys naïveté, and there are three deaths rather than one. Highsmith, a pre-Stonewall lesbian in a country spoiling its riches and plagued by the McCarthy hearings, disliked the U.S. of the 1940s and 1950s. She admired Poe, Dostoevsky, Proust, Kierkegaard, Sartre, and Albert Camus’ nihilistic, stoic murderer L’ETRANGER (THE STRANGER; Gallimard, 1942).

When her second novel, THE PRICE OF SALT (Coward-McCann, 1952), a lesbian romance with a happy end, had to be published under a pseudonym, she moved to Europe. Francis Bacon, she was later quoted in HARPERS’S BAZAAR (2/89), painted modern “mankind throwing up on a toilet with his naked derrière showing.”

In 1974, Highsmith finished her third Ripley novel, RIPLEY’S GAME (Random House), filmed by Wim Wenders as DER AMERIKANISCHE FREUND (THE AMERICAN FRIEND, 1977) with a Texas-accented Dennis Hopper (Highsmith was born in Texas) as a sadistic bachelor Tom, and a body count of eight; and again under its original title by Liliana Cavani in 2002 with dour John Malkovich as a married Tom who likes anal sex, and a body count of 13. The fourth Ripley novel, THE BOY WHO FOLLOWED RIPLEY (Lippincott, 1980), much of it set in West Berlin’s gay bars (Glad Ass, etc.), has been adapted only for BBC Radio 4, in 2009, with Ian Hart as Tom, along with the four other Ripley novels. Nor has the final ‘Ripliad’ novel, RIPLEY UNDER WATER (Knopf, 1991), yet been filmed.

Anthony Minghella’s 1999 postcard-like remake of THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY, with Matt Damon as Tom and charismatic Jude Law as Dickie, several Highsmith works are now in development by U.S. companies.

Mike Nichols is remaking her DEEP WATER (1957) after Michel Deville’s 1981 EAUX PROFONDES, and Jaime Thraves THE CRY OF THE OWL after Claude Chabrol’s LE CRI DU HIBOU; there are also rumors of a new STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. An ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR, “Annabel” (1962), directed by Paul Henreid, based on Highsmith’s THIS SWEET SICKNESS, is available on IDMb and Hulu. Well beloved (and “muggles”) are you ready for the exciting conclusion to Rune Magick after my little hiatus? Boy! I know I am! We’ll do this in a couple segments so that it isn’t overwhelming.
