About our Contributors... Miss Betty Desire has been entertaining anyone who would listen in Bellingham for nearly 10 years, and is proprietor of The Betty Pages, the monthly publication that you are reading at this very moment. It is her hope that your perusal of the Betty Pages will enrich your life one chuckle at a time.
Managing Editor Brian Spencer is a title-holder and board member with the ISCEE, aside from his involvement with various community organizations and work in graphic design. His interests include men, computers, drag queens and politics. He wishes everyone a happy Mardi Gras! Live well, love much, laugh often.
Writer Bridget Adams currently resides in Washington State but that is always subject to change. Lucky enough to be a full-time, if poor, writer, she is most likely somewhere in front of her computer with a cup of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.
Queer Film Historian Bichoo Vrishchik (Scorpio Scorpion) has published in FILM QUARTERLY SIGHT AND SOUND, INTERNATIONAL FILM GUIDE, FILMFARE, YOUTH TIMES, MANSHOTS, and now THE BETTY PAGES. With a BA from Pacific Lutheran College (1959) and a MA from San Francisco State College (1968), he has also taught film at Western Washington University. His main interest is Indian cinema and articles on it are forthcoming.
Photographer Lea Kelley is a local artist, writer, and photographer. She thrives on incongruous pontifications of sardonic gratitude, combined with reflective musings, articulated in an ironic tenor with mordant respect toward inspiration, society, creativity, and the human condition - which is conducive to metaphor in run-on sentences. She’s a wry, loquacious kinda gal.
Contributor Mr. Nathan Perry Mattly What matters most in the end is: How well did you live? How well did you love? How well did you learn to let go? As much as I could say about myself, as stated above in that old Zen proverb in the end only certain things matter and it is in accordance with those things that I live every day of my life.
Contributor Aaron Joy owns a music label in Manhattan (www.romanmidnightmusic. org) with a growing list of “music...off the beaten path”, including planned releases by pianists, a hip-hop poet, a stand-up comic, noize and folk. Aaron spent a decade in Bellingham where he found a niche as a historian, thespian and writer. As a good historian, he can remember the old Rumors and has fond memories of Bellingham’s late ‘Triangle District’ of LGBT-oriented businesses.

On another note, I have been keeping track of the federal trial on California’s Prop 8. It looks like no matter what happens, win or lose; the verdict will be appealed to the Ninth Circuit Court. After that, it appears this trial may make it all the way to the Supremes. No not Diana Ross and the Supremes, although we’d have a better chance at winning there. This

Speaking of Brussels sprouts, Betty has been ordered by her doctor to go to a gym three days a week. He seems to think 328 lbs is a bit too much for my diabetic body to handle. I suppose he is right, and have been obeying religiously. You can find me at Bellingham Fitness on Ellis Street most any day of the week. Ah the shortest month of the year has arrived! Let’s hear it for February! Many like me will be avoiding Valentines Day like the plague. The one day of the year when all single people are reminded of how single they are! I will be busy that Saturday night, however, as Carnival will be celebrated at Rumors. The celebration will be a fund raiser for a local non-profit that works with villagers in the Amazon Basin, hence the name Carnival rather than Mardi Gras. There will be Salsa dance lessons and then Salsa dancing, a Carnival King and Queen, as well as a costume contest all for a paltry $5 dollar donation! Your Betty will be there with her best bells on, so join me as we Rumba the night away!
case just may make it to the “Gang of 5!” You know, that non-activist group of conservative Constitutionalist judges that decided not to allow cameras in the courtroom for this Prop 8 trial, and later the same week decided that corporations are people too! This brings the score to legislation from the bench 2, strict interpretation of the Constitution 0. I guess they were thinking of ways to curb the population explosion and cut health care costs. Now couples don’t have to have children they can just form an L.L.C.! And guess what gay people can form an L.L.C. too! Don’t hold your breath for a fair ruling if Prop 8 gets to this bunch, and put on your seat belt for a wild ride, these boys have decided to rule on whether Washington State can release the names of the signers of the Referendum 71 (R-71) petitions. According to Washington State’s public disclosure laws, all petitions are public record and have been for, oh, 30 years or more, but signers of R-71 are afraid of reprisals from gay people. Apparently, they are afraid of roving bands of “Gay Marauders” fire bombing homes, businesses and churches! Can you imagine? Your favorite hairdressers in hooded rainbow robes burning pink triangles on people’s lawns! PLEASE!!!! When was the last time a straight person was beaten within an inch of his life with baseball bats by a mob of homosexuals and left for dead? Yet the “Gang of 5” may just side with them and give them dispensation. I

Gay Film Bibliography: Robin Wood Bichoo Vrischik
Robin Wood (1931-2009) was not the first film critic to come out of a closet. That might be Parker Tyler (1904-1974, q.v.), if he was ever in one. In fact, John Huston, as acting-teacher Buck Loner in Michael Sarne’s film of Gore Vidal’s 1968 novel MYRA BRECKENRIDGE (1970), asked, “Why are all film critics spinsters or gay?” In Vidal’s novel, Myra loves Tyler’s film criticism. From New Orleans, Tyler had led a dandy bohemian lifestyle in New York’s Greenwich Village before fellow ‘pansy’ Charles Henri Ford came to live with him in 1930. Together they wrote a
gay novel in the manner of Gertrude Stein. Tyler’s first volume of criticism, THE HOLLYWOOD HALLUCINATION came out in 1944, and his SCREENING THE SEXES: HOMOSEXUALITY IN THE MOVIES, (New York: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston), considered the first gay study of film, in 1972.
“I am able to live happily and openly with another man, without fear of public harassment and without the least sense of social ostracism [but] I am well aware that my own relative freedom is dependent upon the circles in which, as a university lecturer and film critic, I move.” Yet in a 1977 lecture at the British Film Institute, “Responsibilities of a Gay Film Critic” (available on-line), he still had to answer his own critics, particularly Phillip Strick in SIGHT AND SOUND (Autumn 1976). Siding with ‘out’ critics Richard Dyer and Andrew Britton (his former student), he shamed himself for having denigrated the lesbianism in Chabrol’s LES BICHES (THE DOES, 1968) and for praising Bergman’s homophobic, monogamous FACE TO FACE (1976), which masqueraded as ‘the human condition’ and lacked a political

But Myra drops no allusions to Robin Wood. The British Wood’s first essay, on Hitchcock’s PSYCHO (1960), was rejected by SIGHT AND SOUND and printed by the French CAHIERS DU CINEMA. His first book was in fact HITCHCOCK’S FILMS (1965), when only France took individual directors seriously, followed by monographs on HOWARD HAWKS (1968), ARTHUR PENN (1968), ANTONIONI (1968, with Ian Cameron), INGMAR B E R G M A N (1969), CLAUDE CHABROL (1970, with Michael Walker) and Satyajit Ray’s THE APU TRILOGY (1971). By then Wood was married, with three children; in the most painful decade of his life, he divorced and came out in print in PERSONAL VIEWS:
EXPLORATIONS IN FILM (London: Gordon Fraser, 1976), four years after Tyler’s SCREENING THE SEXES. PERSONAL VIEWS is dedicated “For John, with Love,” and acknowledges nothing “would be quite the same were it not for my union with John Anderson.” In the first chapter, “Confessions of an Unreconstructed Humanist,” he confesses that his “intense personal involvement” with film makes him subjective, and that “usefulness,” not artifice or suppression, in the manner of Michel Foucault, is his creed. Citing Jean Renoir, a moralist yet “alive,” he goes beyond auteurism and semiotics, to him all art now “capable of sexual interpretation.” Not bourgeois, elitist, Marxist nor avant-garde, but an open-minded skeptic, he asks, What is art “for?” and How can one “live historically?

dimension. He now better appreciated Howard Hawks’ anti-conformist comedies and adventures, with their gay subtext, from FIG LEAVES (1926) to RIO LOBO (1970), called even by Hawks “love stories between men,” five of them with John Wayne. Hawks’ constant role reversals, Wood pointed out, even include human and vegetable, in THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1952).
anxiety, he re-read Renoir’s LES REGLES DU JEU (THE RULES OF THE GAME, 1939) not as entrapment but as “generosity,” now seeing its romantic triangles as quadrangles, wondering Why not pentangles, or even twenty-tangles, in a society evolving perhaps rather than devolving. But his major re-evaluation came in Hitchcock’s homophobia, revising his HITCHCOCK’S FILMS three times, until it became HITCHCOCK’S FILMS Acceptance not of the homosexual by REVISITED REVISED (New York: society but of society by the homosexual Columbia University Press, 1989). became Wood’s goal. Hi Poppets! Have you seen the movie Avatar, yet? I have a confession: I have not. Not being much of a fantasy geek, it just doesn’t hold that much interest for me, even if it is on track to being one of the top-grossing movies of all time. It seems everyone has something to say about it though, which is why I think I’m probably the only person in America who hasn’t seen it yet. Generally speaking, I don’t listen to

Over the last several months, I’ve read bloggers and articles from people of color, women, members of the LGBT community, and yes, even some white, straight folks, who are pointing out these prejudices in everything from comic books to public policy. Movies where the supposedly strong woman still has to be rescued by her male counterpart. Comic books where the token gay character is nothing more than an animated stereotype. Policy that claims to protect one group of people, while throwing another group under the bus. And let’s not forget the justice of the peace at the end of last year who refused to grant a marriage license to an inter-racial couple because of the “emotional harm” society could do to any children resulting from the marriage.

songs of freedom. We wrote letters to politicians. We wore ribbons and peace signs (back before they were in style again). Now, twenty-five years later, a black man acknowledging – with humor, nonetheless – the underlying theme of the white man saving the day is militant. I’ll be honest; I’ve never considered myself militant. I am an unapologetic rights activist. I write for the Betty Pages, even though I’m a straight woman. I write about the racism surrounding our President even though I’m a white woman. The Constitution still means something very important to me. I listen and I talk; I teach and I learn. Does that make me militant? Maybe. Apparently. But I can live with that. For me, it beats the alternative of silence.

And, on an only slightly related note (so please forgive the bad segue), I don’t only call out others when I think they’ve been wrong. I try to admit it when I am, as well. Last month, I called out the President for not standing up more strongly for the LGBT community. Since then, Mr. Obama has appointed the first openly transgendered woman to a Presidential position. Amanda Simpson, formerly Mitchell Simpson, will be a senior technical advisor to the Commerce Department. This is the bravest step any president has ever taken on our behalf, don’t fool yourself. Thank you, sir, for proving me wrong. In spite of last month’s article, I still believe this man is a friend of ours and supports us. If I’m going to call out others, I should call out myself as well. That, too, beats the alternative of silence.

Listening to Gay Music, Maybe? Aaron Joy
Have you listened to any gay music lately? If so, what exactly did you listen to? Sir Elton? Though his lyricist Taupin is straight does Elton play gay piano? If I play a John/Taupin song am I playing gay music? Are “Faith” and “Constant Craving” gay songs? Does RuPaul sing as a gay man or a straight woman? What about Judas Priest with their gay leather clad front man Halford who enters the stage on a motorcycle and started the metal
leather look? Then there’s spandex wearing 80’s hair rock... What the separates a gay love song and a non-gay love song? I believe what constitutes gay music has less to do with the song than the musician playing and what we want or think we hear. If this is the case, then I’m ‘proud’ to ‘out’ the record label I opened this year, Roman Midnight Music, which has made its first contributions to the gay music scene...maybe.
My premiere release in October was “F@T Hits of Yesterday’s Journeys Vol. 1”, also the debut of Juilliard trained Albert Aprigliano, whose been performing on the Manhattan cocktail scene for 30 years...and happens to me my domestic partner. This 10 track CD features forgotten hits of the turn of the century, including Irving Berlin, ragtime and music heard on the Titanic. Some of Betty’s readers may recognize the name of this former Hamster from my work in the theater or as a local historian, writing a history of Bellingham’s parks and contributing regularly to the Herald, Whatcom Watch and Betty Pages. Last year, out of work and depressed, I decided to follow a dream of owning my own music label featuring part-time musicians. I intended to focus on rock and metal, making it one of the few gay-owned metal labels. But, fate asked that I expand to “music...off the beaten path”, with my two flagship artists being (very non-metal) lounge pianists.

decided it was time to record. “Now I know what a homosexual take on this love song sounds like.” This was a comment by a viewer on one’s of Albert’s arrangements of a well-known standard. An interesting comment...considering Albert’s music is instrumental solo piano. “Though formally trained, I play as I feel.” Albert writes on his website www.albertaprigliano.net, “I may not always adhere to the traditional execution of many of my pieces...but it’s the emotional content that has always driven my performance.”
music. I’m sure the fan felt educated at her new listening experience, but it shows how perceptions define our listening. Emotions are the same in all of us. What the separates a gay love song and a non-gay love song... particularly without the pronoun or even any lyrics being sung? And, if Albert’s gay than how can he play anything but…gay sounding chords…maybe.
This year Irving put I Dreamed a Dream into his repertoire because of Susan Boyle. While Albert has posted his arrangements of Motley Crue and Metallica. Cayce gave psychic “readings” by putting himself memorize the contents of a book simply by sleeping on it (This is called sleep osmoses, or synthesis.). Notice the sleep theme? Hmm, gee I wonder why this man was called the “sleeping prophet?”

So this will be the “curve ball” for a lot of readers: Edgar Cayce was actually a devout churchgoer. He was also a Sunday school teacher. According to my sources, Cayce knew his Bible very well! This is no surprise to me, as I saw and spoke to my first ghost (or at least that I can recall) when I was five. And as my household was a Christian one, my first encounter with spirituality was influenced by Christian doctrine. I suspect the same was true for Cayce. As with the both of us, I am sure; we soon learned that Christianity simply could not offer sufficient explanation for so many of our experiences. So yet again, as for the two of us: we read. We read everything that we could possibly find, understand, or that took our interest; essentially anything that resonated. The result was a self formed spirituality based in experience. Once when Cayce was asked how to become psychic, Cayce replied, “become more spiritual.” In other words: only believing www . thebettypages . com

I have here an early photo of Mr. Cayce. I found him to be rather fetching in his youth (Well I would have done him anyway!). I thought it would be fun to show a little more In October 1910, this charismatic side of him for once. He photograph appeared on the front page of The is usually published as frumpy stately New York Times after a gentleman in his late years. Plus the reporter stole it from the anecdote of how this photo was first home of Cayce’s parents to published is quite amusing! use for a story. Now! Since Edgar Cayce was a seer, as well as channeller, very much in a similar vein to Nostradamus. However, Cayce generally speaking did not have as much direct contact with divination tools as Nostradamus did. These psychic aspects / abilities still may be considered a form of the craft known as divination. Cayce however did coin the phrase “reading” or “personal reading” which deviationist reference to this very day. So though Cayce may not have been big on tools of the trade, many of us are! Also we still refer to the spiritual counsel that we provide [with or without tools] as a “reading.”
It’s ok though, the “force has great power over the weak minded:” I worked the mojo! The shop-keep ended up with the short straw. However, I still had to balance the scales and pay through the nose a little bit.) My stones really aren’t stones at all. They’re actually metal. The very finest quality, pure silver (the holy metal); all 25 of them (Hmm . . . 25 pieces of silver, 5 shy of 30?), and not one impurity in them! (I am so proud!) They really are an unrivalled beauty! My stones are literally from another time and place so they look as though they belong in a motion picture play. But enough of my vainglory! The point is that one can tailor one’s runes to their personality. There are so many forms of stones out there, as well as publications on how to use them! Everything
As one might recall, I mentioned Nostradamus. Well, that dude favored a divination tool or technique called scrying (or more specifically, water scrying). We won’t be discussing scrying today however. Or Nostradamus any further either. We will be discussing an entirely different form of divination. This form of divination is accomplished by the means of some splendid little objects called rune stones! My babies are rune stones! (Well they should be! The filthy little buggers! They cost me an arm and a leg! Especially for something that was mine in a previous incarnation anyway! www . thebettypages . com
