About our Contributors... Miss Betty Desire has been entertaining anyone who would listen in Bellingham for nearly 10 years, and is proprietor of The Betty Pages, the monthly publication that you are reading at this very moment. It is her hope that your perusal of the Betty Pages will enrich your life one chuckle at a time. Writer Bridget Adams currently resides in Washington State but that is always subject to change. Lucky enough to be a full-time, if poor, writer, she is most likely somewhere in front of her computer with a cup of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. Queer Film Historian Bichoo Vrishchik (Scorpio Scorpion) has published in Film Quarterly Sight and Sound, International Film Guide, Filmfare, Youth Times, and Manshots. With a BA from Pacific Lutheran College (1959) and a MA from San Francisco State College (1968), he has also taught film at Western Washington University. Naomi graduated Whatcom Community College with an Associates in Visual Communications -Graphic Design but prefers more hands on tinkering such as wire craft & random projects (of which she always has many still to finish). She believes that everyone has a right to pursue their happiness as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone

family portrait as well if they could have made it up from Mt Vernon. They too have exhibited true Family Values. Their love never waned and the family bond was not allowed to break they have told me many times how proud they are of what I do Music to the ears of any child no matter how old you are. My Nephew Tony would have been in this portrait as well if he could have gotten the time off work in Lakewood. His parents have passed and now he joins his “Auntie Betty” and his cousins for holidays and family dinners. Then there is Taylor. Taylor loves her Grandpama and gets rather annoyed when she can’t attend a Betty Show. She is showing an interest in her families history which has me very excited because I held on to her great- great Grandmothers diaries. We are going to have wonderful journeys together through those diaries that span from 1923 to 1989 Families come in many varied forms. Some are family by birth, and some are family by choice, but the bond of love and commitment, when allowed to flourish, is what holds them together. The similarities in all the varied expressions of family far outweigh any differences. Love really does cover a multitude of sins. Who knew?
Happy August!

On the cover of this months Betty Pages you will find my family. My Son Brandon,Daughter Beth, and Grand Daughter Taylor. The photo was taken outside Bellingham City Hall the day the Pride flag was raised for the first time in observation of Bellingham Pride week. I cannot begin to express how delighted I was to have all of us together to witness this historic day in Gay Bellingham history. You see it seems like it was only yesterday that my biggest fear about “coming out”was losing the love and respect of my Children. As it turned out I had nothing to fear. Over the last 21 years my kids have been actively engaged in every aspect of our family life. Their love, understanding and patience with “Dad” is a testament of true Family values. You see our family unit operates like any other. We have a bond with each other that is stronger than our individual differences. It allows us to come to each others aid in times of need. It also allows us to give each other space when needed. I love my Children, but I have an added bonus in that I also like the adults they have grown in to. I enjoy spending time with the adult versions of the two kids that more often then not would cause me to shout from the driver seat “you two behave or I am turning this van right around!” They have shown time and again over the years by their actions that their words “I love you Dad” ring true. I consider myself very fortunate because even in 2013 this is not the case in many families where one parent leaves the relationship because of his/her sexual orientation. My parents would have been in this

Have you noticed, Poppets, that the latest salvo in the war against LGBTQ people is now that they’ve won, let’s see if they are willing to give the same tolerance that they demanded from the people who disagreed with them or thereabout. That’s the gist of it anyway: tolerance and disagreement. This argument has made me almost speechless. But that’s the key word: almost. I have managed to gather my thoughts and my words and form a response. Let’s break this whole concept down, shall we? First, the idea that we’ve “won.” Usually, this is reference is to the DOMA repeal. Which was wonderful. It was an amazing and necessary step. It was, however, just that – a step. All the repeal of DOMA accomplished was allowing marriage equality in states that didn’t already outlaw it. It didn’t require all states to grant marriage equality. It didn’t even require all states to recognize marriage equality in other states. And it certainly didn’t address employment, homelessness, a culture of violence, adoption, access of services, or any number of non-marriage related issues faced by the LGBTQ community every day. But we “won.” Please. Tell me how something that only applies to a small part of a larger issue, and doesn’t even apply to it nationally, counts as winning anything. Second, the idea that we were ever granted tolerance, even as we demanded it. The whole reason we are having to fight this in the first place is because there was no tolerance. Anyone who wants to codify, through legislation or constitutional amendment, the second-class status of another group of people isn’t tolerating anything. I have lost count of the number of times people who claimed to be “tolerant” insisted that David and I want special rights. We don’t. None of us do. We want acknowledgement that we have the same rights that straight, cis-gendered people take for granted every day. Insisting we want special rights, and using that specialness to deny us those rights, isn’t tolerating anything. Third, and finally, the fact that we all “disagreed.” Really? Is that what we did? We disagreed? No. A disagreement is wanting burgers instead of pizza for dinner. A disagreement is routing for the New York Giants over the New England Patriots. A disagreement can even be thinking we need to put more money into defense rather than into education. A disagreement is not trying to legislate the very humanity of a group of people. The people who spewed hate now want the same level of tolerance they offered us. Part of me really wants to give it to them. Instead, I will speak with my pocket book. I will get my coffee from Starbucks and shop at JC Penney or Target. I will skip the movie adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game and get my chicken sandwiches somewhere other than Chick Fil’A. But more importantly, Poppets, let’s all of us not see the repeal of DOMA as a win, but as a step. Let’s refuse to accept almost-good-as. Let’s refuse to confuse tolerance with equality. Until next month, Poppets, take care of you.

Friends of Nadia - A Queer Film Bibliography Bishoo Vrischik
In the United States the phrase “friends of Dorothy” of course refers to ‘queer’ people, i.e. the ‘friends’ of Judy Garland as Dorothy Gale in Victor Fleming’s 1939 THE WIZARD OF OZ. I don’t mean to suggest that in India the phrase “friends of Nadia” refers to ‘queer’ Indians, although it could. I mean to suggest that, while her biographer Dorthee Wenner claims she “outsmarted” anti-feminists, even the 8000bc LAWS OF MANU (qv), she was not alone. Nor does Nadia’s biodoc by her grandnephew Riyad Vinci Wadia, FEARLESS: THE HUNTERWALI STORY (qv), mean to suggest that she is a queer icon, although it could. Rather, that biodoc stresses the roles of her friends, the Wadia brothers (one of whom she married), her bodybuilding co-star John Cawas (All India Bodybuilding Champ 1930), and the other performers and technicians who helped make her thirty-six year-long career a thundering success.
Miss Padma Devi (alias Nilima), also before Nadia in the Wadias’ DILRUBA DAKU (aka THE AMAZON, 1933) sported Douglas Fairbanks’ mask from Fred Niblo’s 1920 THE MARK OF ZORRO. Disguise, treachery, action and songs as in nautanki (North Indian folk-drama) mixed, as cinema audiences diversified south and to rural areas. Expensive sound, i.e. “industrial modernity,” caused the formerly shipbuilding Wadias, Irani Parsis, to remake their Miss Padma vehicle TOOFAN MAIL (1932) as MISS FRONTIER MAIL (1936) with new finds ‘Fearless’ Nadia and Cawas (later the Chief Instructor at Pune’s Hercules Gym) as amateur filmmakers. Some of Nadia’ stunts, choreographed by Shroff, were doubled by the leaner, former bodybuilder-hero Raja Sandow. To Vitali, industrialization moved the trains (there is little other continuity) while the Wadias attached “the signs of modernity onto a female body,” ‘monetizing’ Nadia’s sturdy frame, outside caste, lineage, and Indian decorum. She had already demonstrated
In Lahore by age three, Bombay convent-raised Mary Evans was already exotic. Scottish-Greek Australian Mary early on was in turn inspired by Theda Bara in J. Gordon Edwards’ SALOMÉ (1918). With her horse Punjab, German Shepherd Gunboat and Rolls Royce, Nadia was befriended by three Marx Brothers-inspired comics (one with Harold Lloyd glasses) and in Homi’s JUNGLE PRINCESS (1942) by tame lions. She was twins in Bhatt and Mistri’s MUQABALA (CONTRAST, 1942), a prostitute and a warrior in drag; and her own mother in Bhatak Bhatt’s HUNTERWALI KI BETI (HUNTERWALI’S DAUGHTER, 1943). Nadia often fought the same false-bearded princes and landlords—until Independence. Stunt queens disappeared, not returning until Hema Malini worked in a carnival as Ramesh Sippy’s SEETA AUR GEETA (SEETA AND GEETA, 1972). Dimple began castrating rapists, but with no sense of humor, in Avtar Bhogal’s ZAKHME AURAT (WOUNDED WOMAN, 1988) before a campy Rekha strode in black as MADAME X and her lookalike (1994), both films inspired by India’s first policewoman, Kiran Bedi (from 1972). While campy, such films lack the surrealistic humor of Nadia’s, including their comic sound effects. In Homi’s 1940 DIAMOND QUEEN her Rolls Royce saves itself from a speeding train. Seema Biswas in Shekar Kapur’s certainly un-campy THE BANDIT QUEEN (1994), as the real-life Phoolan Devi, rebels, kills and is paraded naked through a village square. In 1994 Shabana Azmi as Vinay Shukla’s GODMOTHER, reportedly based on the life of small-town donna Santokben Jadeja, drove a jeep, revenging upon her husband’s killers. The humorless, avenging female is however more paramount in regional cinema. At least three films named SHERNI (LIONESS) have appeared, in Punjabi (1973), Bhojpuri (2013), and even Hindi (1988). In Bengali desperate housewives have been known to become poisonous snakes. In Telugu, formerly glamorous Vijayashanti suffered a severe beating as a cop in KARTHAYAM (DOING GOOD, 1990) before becoming LADY BOSS (1994), et al., often dubbed in Tamil. In A.C. Trilochandar’s Tamil BADRAKALI (AUSPICIOUS KALI, 1976), a predecessor of the Tamil genre of Cruel Cinema, rapeddivorcée Rani Chandra channels goddess Kali killing her ex-husband’s second wife’s rapist with a thrishul (trident). Bettermost, in Kannada patent-leathered Malashri morphed from a shrew in 1989 to a cop in A.P. Sharma’s SHAKTI (FEMALE POWER, 2012), in his 2013

Before Nadia took to swinging from chandeliers, riding horses and fisticuffing myriad villains, few actresses had subverted the Laws of Manu. Valentina Vitali’s HINDI ACTION CINEMA: INDUSTRIES, NARRATIVES, BODIES (New Delhi, Oxford University Press, 2008) reminds us that in the silent days “foreign women” were often cast even as Rajput princesses because Hindu and Muslim society refused its women to associate with the wicked stage, let alone the disgraceful, imported cinema. Durga Khote in her atmacairitra (autobiography) I, DURGA KHOTE (New Delhi, Oxford, 2006; translated from Marathi by Shanta Gokhale) recalls she first appeared in 1931, beaten by her on-screen husband while singing in an otherwise silent film, only because her real family desperately needed Rs.250—and was thus socially ostracized. Yet Durga soon rode a horse and wielded a sword as a princess with a pet cheetah in V. Shantaram’s MAYA MACHHINDRA (THE GREAT KING, 1932). Ermaline (alias Suchabala), another equestrian and swordfighter, changed her name to a popular English one probably to avoid such scandal.
whiplashes in HUNTERWALI (qv, 1935), learned from a circus, and her trademark yell “Hey” from gypsy dancers. She broke up space, creating a genre and new morés for a new economy—until World War II. HUNTERWALI had been inspired by Pearl White and Robin Hood: now stunt films melded back into “feudal family melodrama” (Vitali, 115), and the stunt queen disappeared.

A Gay Film Bibliography continued VEERA (BRAVE) crashing speedboats, shooting miscreants and jumping through plate-glass windows. Rape currently a high profile topic in India this list will surely grow. So, dining with Nadia’s grandnephew Roy Wadia at the Willington Sport Club near the Mahalaxmi Racetrack in Mumbai last May, I mentioned, “The filmi tabloids indicate interest in a Bollywood Nadia biopic.” Roy holds her copyright. “Shekkar Kapur has wanted to make one for over a decade,” said Roy. It was perhaps the failure of Kapur’s 2004 FOUR FEATHERS that kept him from his Nadia biopic. He had made his sequel to ELIZABETH (1998), i.e., ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE (2007)— both with Cate Blanchett who, like Nadia, is Australian--only after FOUR FEATHERS’ failure.

Exploring The Major Arcana Part 2 Kevin Walder
Welcome back to our continuing exploration of the Major Arcana. When last we spoke our young Fool had progressed through the first seven of the cards leading to his physical maturity and peak of physical power and strength. With the seventh card The Chariot our Fool began to respect himself as a perfectly capable and worthy adversary in any arena.
w w w. t h e b e t t y p a g e s . c o m
This month it is time for our Fool to discover the need for emotional and mental power to complement his physical abilities. Though the Fool has faced many challenges and tests through his journey with card number 8 ‘Strength” he is presented a challenge of strength which calls on his emotional, mental, and spiritual prowess rather than the physical. Suddenly he is no longer on sure footing as the Fool seeks to find that inner strength which will see him through all future challenges.
14
Over the course of his journey there have been many times the Fool has had to ask “Why?”. Card number 9 “The Hermit” steps forward to remind our Fool that the real answers to all life’s questions lie within and the time has come to withdraw from society and engage in a period of introspection and self discovery. As the Fool emerges from his solitude he feels more connected to everyone and everything in his surrounding world. Card number 10 “The Wheel” tells the Fool to respect and embrace the cyclical changes of the seasons and rhythms of life. Understanding that there will always be highs and lows in life and being emotionally ready to work within the natural flow of things will be much more rewarding than fighting the natural order. Looking back on the journey so far the Fool realizes that there have been times in the past when some of his decisions were not well thought out and for the good of all. Card number 11 “Justice” is the reminder that in order for there to be fairness and justice in this life everyone must be treated fairly and equitably. Justice is blind and does not take into account status or wealth but decides with fairness for all. The Fool is more determined than ever now to complete the journey to self knowledge and understanding. Card number 12
w w w. t h e b e t t y p a g e s . c o m
“The Hanged Man” comes forward to admonish the Fool to quit focusing only on the costs of the journey, but to pay closer attention to the benefits being derived from it. A new perspective is needed, a new way of seeing and experiencing the journey will lead to greater emotional growth. Upon reflection the Fool realizes that many old habits and attitudes need to be eliminated to make growth possible. Card number 13 “Death” says to our Fool that nothing is permanent in this life and there are times when new growth cannot occur without discarding something old which is taking up the space. Some highly regarded bits of life must be sacrificed to allow the new. Something the Fool had not expected was how soon balance could be restored after letting go of old attitudes and habits. Card number 14 “Temperance” presents one of the biggest lessons the Fool will learn on this journey. The lesson of alchemy, that the Fool can create for himself by combining unrelated elements to make a more precious and useful tool for himself. Just as in our own lives the Fool’s journey has had many ups and downs, but each down provides him with a new tool for coping with the future and each up teaches him to respect the lessons of his past. The next seven cards of the Major Arcana deal with the spiritual development of our Fool.

Procrastination Marcymark
Have you ever procrastinated on something for so long that the point at which completion is close to impossible but important enough to not give up? Some doctors say that you can get stimulation from stress caused by tasks being held back to the last minute. Deliberate procrastination? Some people like this? Sure as hell isn’t me. I’m just being lazy. I’m usually pretty proud of myself when I have one or more things to write about here in this article and I’m usually prepared. Not this time. Here it is an hour from my deadline from when this article needs to be turned in and I haven’t a clue as to what I’m going to write. So I’m going on a whim, Play’n it by ear, and hoping for the best. My Daughter graduated from High School this year. (WooHoo!!) Last month was filled with Proms, Ceremonies, and celebrations. To see her wearing her cap and gown brought back the feeling of that proud parenthood love that you have when your child is born. Those tears of happiness and that awesome feeling inside all came back to me.
w w w. t h e b e t t y p a g e s . c o m
Her being down there with the rest of her classmates is a moment I know she will remember as I do when I graduated. And to recapture that feeling in my heart from when she was born and feel it all again as she receives her diploma.
16
All these years of watching my Daughter grow up into a woman and remembering how, what seems like yesterday, she was a little girl. Less then a week ago her Mother comes up to me and mentioned about the home movies and how we should make a movie clip of her for her upcoming grad party. I thought that was a wonderful idea. Realizing at that point that all the home movie clips are still on VHS tapes. Now here is where the procrastination comes to life. Yes this little choir could have been done years ago when VCR machines were readily available and the component to connect VCR to a computer was also plentiful.
If If You’re You’re Reading Reading This... This... then so are your customers. E-mail advertiseinthebettypages@gmail.com for more information on advertising. w w w. t h e b e t t y p a g e s . c o m
So for the last week prior to writing this article I have spent scrambling for the equipment necessary to complete the task and watching my Daughter growing up again on VHS movies. Now if it wasn’t emotional enough to see her in her gown graduating I can secretly tell you that I have had happy tears rolling from my cheeks almost endlessly for the past week. Watching 18 years of my little girl growing up into a woman in less then 7 days can take a lot out of you. You’d be surprised how much energy is used up with that much emotion. I’m sure the lack of sleep had its part too. Since we have over 60 VHS tapes with 2 hours of movies on each. O.K. so maybe we did video a lot but it was worth it. With the daily routing of work, eat, sleep, and maybe a little break time in-between tears I got almost half way through the movies but I was able to complete a good movie clip for her. Since the movie clip I made for her is a secret and she won’t actually see it for another few days I can’t really tell you if it was a big hit or not. By the time you read this 2 weeks will have past. You’ll just have to ask me in person. So the next time you see me. You can ask, “How was your Daughters movie clip?” So as to being stimulated by stress caused by procrastination, Oh hell ya I was stimulated! Yet still I wouldn’t do it deliberately. Taking all those VHS home movie clips and putting them on DVD/zip drives is finally being done after all these years of procrastination. I have my Son graduating in a couple years. I will be prepared this time around. Besides, I’ve got 2 years
