Miss Betty Desire has been entertaining anyone who would listen in Bellingham for nearly 10 years, and is proprietor of The Betty Pages, the monthly publication that you are reading at this very moment. It is her hope that your perusal of the Betty Pages will enrich your life one chuckle at a time.

Kathy Reim is a PFLAG mom who volunteers in a variety of leadership roles because she gets to meet amazing people and use all the skills gathered over a lifetime as a teacher, mediator and political activist. One of her proudest moments was being called a ho-mo-sex-u-al activist six times by a leader of the anti-Referendum 71 campaign. She was impressed by his enunciation and repetition and her ability to keep from laughing until later.

Writer Bridget Adams currently resides in Washington State but that is always subject to change. Lucky enough to be a full-time, if poor, writer, she is most likely somewhere in front of her computer with a cup of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

Caity is a Bellingham native and a self-proclaimed “foodie”, although she thinks that is a rather ridiculous word. Her passion for food is seemingly genetic and she attributes her love of cooking and eating to her family. She is also an aspiring writer!

Naomi graduated Whatcom Community College with an Associates in Visual Communications -Graphic Design but prefers more hands on tinkering such as wire craft & random projects (of which she has many still to finish). She believes that everyone has a right to pursue their happiness as long as it doesn’t harm others

We are living in dizzying times, Poppets, and not in the good way. More often than not these days, I feel like a pin ball, bouncing faster and faster between bumpers. DADT is repealed; DOMA is still in effect. North Carolina votes for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage; the President comes out in favor of same-sex marriage. The federal government stops defending DOMA; the House of Representatives reaffirms its commitment to the law. The governors of Rhode Island and Illinois come out in favor of same-sex marriage; a Mississippi legislator quotes Leviticus (which, in case you don’t know, calls for gay men to be put to death). And need I say that issues unrelated to marital status are even more dizzying? No, I didn’t think so.

According to a wicked cool graph sent to me by one of my best friends, the core issues of hate crimes, housing, and employment break down as confusingly as same-sex marriage. While 31 states have protections against hate crimes due to sexual orientation, only 14 states protect against those same crimes based on gender identity. Housing protections are afforded to LGB peoples in 21 states, and only 17 to the Ts in our alphabet soup. Finally, only 22 states protect employment based on orientation, and 17 based on identity. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/interactive/2012/may/08/gayrights-united-states) It’s loud, chaotic, and confusing. Given the noise, it is more important than ever to be diligent, especially in an election year. Know your allies and your enemies.

Federal elections take center stage, and that’s okay. But pay close attention to your state elections, as well. What the federal government doesn’t legislate, the states will - and our rights are being addressed at both levels.

Same-sex marriage is an important issue. It’s not the only important issue.

Federal elections are important every election year. State elections are just as important this year. Don’t let them bounce you back and forth between bumpers. Don’t be distracted by the lights and the noise.

We’re on the right path, Poppets. Let’s stay there.

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It is also my least favorite, as the thought of eating when I am barely awake is difficult to stomach. (Pun intended?)

Bellingham has no shortage of breakfast places, most with their specialties and loyal following. And while I certainly found something to enjoy about most of them, it wasn’t until The Daisy Café opened its doors that I found a place with breakfast that I would start craving upon waking up.

Located in the 114 W. Magnolia Street building, The Daisy Café is a welcome sight every single time I visit. The sunny dining room is cozy and bright, especially on grey and wet days. The staff is always friendly and prompt, although if you go on a Saturday or Sunday, expect a little bit of a wait and things may be a bit behind schedule.

Whether you’re looking to enjoy a cup of coffee while sitting at the counter and watching the action in the busy kitchen, or you want to take your out of town guests out for a more unique breakfast, this is the place!

The food is always colorful, bright, and fresh. The Daisy uses a lot of local ingredients and makes everything to order, which is a contributing factor in the presentation and quality. A lot of the menu focuses on omelets and scrambles, with plenty of a la carte items and more standard fare like buttermilk pancakes ($5.50 or a short stack for $4.50).

After just one visit, I found my staple: the Great Northwest Benedicta perfectly toasted English muffin, topped with smoked salmon and the best Hollandaise sauce that I have ever tasted. (I eat my Benedict without eggs.) It may be one of the most expensive things on the menu ($11.50), but it is certainly worth it and is served with a large helping of potatoes. It is also served traditionally for those who prefer their Eggs Benedict with ham ($10.00). While The Daisy offers a more savory breakfast menu, I do recommend the Cinnamon Orange French Toast ($6.50 or $5.50) for those who prefer something sweeter.

While I have yet to try anything on their lunch menu, I can say with confidence that I am sure everything is just as delicious as their breakfast. The Daisy offers lunch from 11:00 until 2:30 for those in search of a variety of sandwiches, salads, burgers, or stone fired pizza.

I know that most people who live in Bellingham have their favorite “first meal of the day” place, but for my money, nothing can beat the ambiance, friendly faces, and the food of The Daisy Café!

Village Books and Fairhaven Runners & Walkers are pleased to announce the 13th Annual 5K Run/Walk for Literacy on Sat., June 16th at 9am. Participants will enjoy a combination road-trail course, with slight grades and beautiful scenery. The race will feature age-group awards and prizes. There will also be a free kids’ 1/2-mile fun run at 8:45am before the 5K, beginning near the Village Green. This run is open to children ages 10 and under. All proceeds from this 5K event will benefit the Whatcom Literacy Council.

Last year the event raised more than $2000 for the organization. "We are so honored to be the beneficiary of an event that brings families out for fun, fitness and fundraising. We welcome walkers and runners of all levels; each year we see babies in strollers alongside athletes from 8 to 80 years old," shares Rachel Myers, Executive Director at Whatcom Literacy Council.

After the race there will be live music, good company, good food, awards, and a drawing for random prizes, all on the Fairhaven Village Green. This 13th annual race also marks the celebration of Village Books' 32nd anniversary, Fairhaven Runners and Walkers 13th anniversary, and Whatcom Literacy Council's 34th anniversary.

The Literacy Run/Walk would not be possible without the generous support from these sponsors: The Colophon Cafe, Copies Now, Haggen Fairhaven Market, Great Harvest Bread Company, and the Greater Bellingham Running Club.

Mary Kay and I met in 1982 at work. We worked together and fell in love. We have had 30 years of a deep and enduring relationship. We have raised two children, have four wonderful grandchildren with whom we are very active grandparents. Our family looks no different than other families with the exception of sexual anatomy. The opportunity to marry accords us equal status with other couples, albeit not equal rights. Mary Kay gets Social Security. Because of the federal laws, we are not treated equally in that regard. Being able to say our wedding vows and be recognized by our state is a good beginning. We will take that for now.

Rachel (Sehome class of 1988) and Tammy Reim-Ledbetter are looking forward to having their marriage recognized with the same respect and legal rights all other citizens in this county enjoy.

They want to move on in their lives as they have been- working hard, spending time with their families who love them,having time with the many friends they enjoy, taking care of their dachshunds and someday coming home to the Skagit/Whatcom area to live.

David Bricka and Michael Bonacci met nearly 10 years ago at the Timberline Disco Tea Dance in Seattle. They fell in love under the disco ball and haven’t stopped dancing since. In the immortal words of Kylie Minogue, it was “Love at First Sight.”

They registered as Domestic Partners five years ago, and are now eagerly awaiting their opportunity to legally marry in WA. They’re already making plans for a “Spiritual Broadway Disco Extravaganza” either at the end of this year or on their next anniversary in July 2013.

A few years ago at Edmonds Community College a young man approached the table, and I pointed him to a booklet called, “Faith in our Families.” I said, “Sometimes there can be people in a family who have some questions about faith and being gay.”

“Oh,” he said, “It isn’t a problem. My family has no faith.”

I have all these young friends who profess they are atheist or agnostic.

When I talk more with them, I can hear these words have become their solace. For some of them these labels are a relief, not a belief. They fill their confusion with hostility and counter-rejection. It breaks my heart.

It is bravado and is becoming their bond- their identification. It has become that for a whole generation. We know this because they are not in our churches.

I was stunned. “It isn’t a problem… we have no faith,” he repeated as he picked up the booklet with mild curiosity. I was overwhelmed with sadness. I am writing this because I think many of you reading this share my grief at how being identified as Christian has come to represent rejection- not just for LGBT individuals and their families- but a whole generation who thinks Christianity is irrelevant to their lives.

I want to applaud all of the congregations who are part of the reconciling ministries. I have heard some of the stories of the heartfelt efforts that are involved and the price that is paid in all kinds of ways for your courage.

I urge your continued commitment to be the physical faces in the world who reflect the love of Jesus.

We stand on steps and walk the streets and see the twisted faces of hate shouting at us. The next time you are given a chance to be a presence or stay home, I pray you will have the energy to show up.

There will be a kid standing in the crowd who needs to see you.

Community Notes Dear friends,

Being a part of the PFLAG family for the last ten years has been an opportunity to know how tens of thousands of families step into an unsafe place when we have a gay child. I said from the beginning in my defensiveness that I was determined to change the world but not the church.

It was too heart-wrenching to bring something as personal as faith and as beloved as my child into the same conversation. I have been asked to share the story of my family and our need for places of faith to become reconciling or open and affirming. These are the most difficult presentations I have ever made. It is why, I think, it is easier to flee from churches than to stay. It is easier to stay silent than speak up. The Gay Straight Alliances in schools each year do their yearly Day of Silence in April. I sometimes wonder why places of faith do not follow their lead…places of faith have so much silence sometimes. In our visits to church groups since then as guest speakers, people sometimes say they have never talked so openly. If not there, where? Where?

Yesterday I got to talk to a volunteer with Planned Parenthood's Seattle regional office. Did you know that in the past two years, there have been more than 1,500 federal and state laws enacted to curtail a woman's access to reproductive health care services? And in Washington State, pharmacists can still deny filling birth control prescriptions if they feel it violates their religious beliefs? Voicing your support for Planned Parenthood is good but women (and the men who are sleeping with those women) need to pay attention to the representatives they vote into office. When you give someone your vote, you have the right to ask them if they will support YOUR reproductive rights. If they can't answer a simple YES or NO question, DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR VOTE! Also, you can look at a candidate's list of sponsors to see if Planned Parenthood or NARAL Pro Choice has endorsed them.

If they have, it will be listed. This isn't just about abortions. This is about health care for women. Be proactive!

I am a mom with a lesbian daughter. I am a person of faith. I taught Sunday school and confirmation classes for twenty-five years. I am not a biblical expert, but I made a very deliberate decision at 21 to move from the fundamentalist traditions of the hard shell Baptist family that raised me from 8 until 18 to become a Lutheran- after studying Catholicism and the Anglican faith. I was baptized a week before I married.

My mother declined to come because I was being sprinkled and not immersed, and so I was, in fact, not really going to be baptized. When Rachel shared- when she was 19- that she was gay, I was distressed.

Never once because I wanted to change her sexual orientation or because I doubted she was loved and accepted by God. It was much more about not knowing what our future and her future would hold- not having a picture of our lives and being afraid for her emotional, economic and physical safety. I knew my family in Texas would not be okay with her or me. They aren’t.

Dear PFLAG Skagit, friends and supporters: I was pleased to mail 55 pledge cards to Washington United for Marriage- many of them the result of efforts by our very own Rainbow Alliance at Skagit Valley College. It is exciting to see the commitment from all of these young adults- gay and straight- who know the time for marriage equality is now. Here is an important message from the campaign...

First, the good news: Marriage equality is now the law of Washington State. Back in February, a bi-partisan vote of the State legislature approved legislation to permit civil marriage for same-sex couples. Then, on February 13, Governor Gregoire signed the bill into law.

The law honors the values of Washington State: We believe marriage and family are about love and commitment, working together, bettering the community, raising children, and growing old together. We believe in a Washington that supports strong families and values freedom and equality. We believe the true measure of us as a state is how we treat each other and that every individual should have the opportunity to make a lifetime commitment to the person he or she loves. And we believe that marriage matters.

Now, the bad news: there are some who want to roll back the clock by putting the new law on the November statewide ballot as a referendum - Referendum 74.

Here’s where you come in: supporters of marriage equality must band together to mobilize all our resources - including our friends, families and neighbors – to defend Washington State’s marriage equality law by Approving Referendum 74.

It’s pretty simple. Approve the law passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor. Approve of all loving and committed couples having the freedom to marry. Approve 74.

Author event: Pt. Gamble Theater~June 9, 2 p.m.

After a book talk & signing, Gregg Olsen will lead a walking tour pointing out real Port Gamble locations used in ENVY, along with places where paranormal activity has been recorded.

Based on a true, and deadly, case of bullying, ENVY is set in Port Gamble and has been chosen by state librarians to represent Washington at the National Book Festival’s Pavilion of the States. The news comes just before the debut young adult novel from bestselling, true-crime writer Gregg Olsen is being released in paperback. Movie production begins in Fall ENVY stars twin sisters Hayley and Taylor Ryan of Port Gamble— a.k.a.

“Empty Coffin” due to an old town legend. Opening with the mysterious death of the twins' childhood friend, Hayley and Taylor aren’t convinced she committed suicide as the medical examiner has deemed. Determined to find out what really happened, they investigate, stumbling upon a dark truth far more disturbing than they could have imagined and uncovering a spine-chilling secret about their own past. ENVY takes readers to the edge—then pushes them over.

Olsen, a Kitsap County resident and father of twin girls, populates his Empty Coffin series with a cast of teens that YA readers will find highly realistic. The paperback edition (June 5, 2012) includes bonus material about Olsen and a discussion guide that will spark robust conversation among readers of all ages.
