Miss Betty Desire has been entertaining anyone who would listen in Bellingham for nearly 10 years, and is proprietor of The Betty Pages, the monthly publication that you are reading at this very moment. It is her hope that your perusal of the Betty Pages will enrich your life one chuckle at a time. Queer Film Historian Bichoo Vrishchik (Scorpio Scorpion) has published in Film Quarterly Sight and Sound, International Film Guide, Filmfare, Youth Times, and Manshots. With a BA from Pacific Lutheran College (1959) and a MA from San Francisco State College (1968), he has also taught film at Western Washington University. Writer Bridget Adams currently resides in Washington State but that is always subject to change. Lucky enough to be a full-time, if poor, writer, she is most likely somewhere in front of her computer with a cup of coffee. Lots and lots of coffee. Taelor Anne Warner is a local performer and educator. She started making educational videos in 2009 to share more information about the transgender community. A former WWU student she was one of the driving forces behind TransPort, the transgender support group on campus, and makes occasional appearances at drag shows and events in the Bellingham area. Naomi Steele graduated Whatcom Community College with an Associates in Visual Communications -Graphic Design but prefers more hands on tinkering such as wire craft & random projects (of which she has many still to finish). She believes that everyone has a right to pursue their happiness as long as it doesn’t harm others Staff Photographer John Phillip, after 40+ years of television production work John has settled down in B’ham to semi retirement. He now drives late night shuttle for WWU and has revised his love of photography. His education touched on Theology, pre-med, law enforcement, fire protection engineering and film production. John likes to keep broad horizons. “Don’t Dream It, Be It”

she was alone. She said that she and her partner had celebrated earlier that evening. After that she had a conversation with another old friend who broke friendship with her because she is a lesbian and she needed some time alone to deal with her feelings. (2012 and these things still happen. And yes Religion was involved) I assured her that a true friend would never break friendship over someones sexual orientation. Knowing that doesn’t help the pain much, after all this was a long friendship, but does put a different perspective on things. I said maybe in time the friend would come around. Many of us have lost friends and family when we decide to be out and honest with who we are and who we love. Dr. Seuss had it right “be who you are! Those that matter won’t mind.

Get ready, Poppets, because we’re moving into Pride season, and what a season 2012 is shaping up to be! While most events take place next month, you can find a way and a place to show your Pride all summer long. Start in Olympia, the weekend of June 8-10. Traditionally, this has been a smaller, very family-friendly event and it certainly seems to be what they are aiming for this year, as well. If you’ve got little ones, this might be a good choice for you. The kickoff is the night of June 8th at the Urban Onion. The fun really begins, though, at the festival, which runs the 9th and 10th in Sylvester Park. Even the hours are family-friendly: Saturday, 10:00-5:00 and Sunday, 10:00-3:30. Catch the Parade Sunday, too, starting at the Capital building. Check www.capitalcitypride.net for more information. Next up is Portland and Pride NorthWest. Be at the festival in Tom McCall Waterfront Park on Saturday, June 16th from noon to six, or the 17th, during the same hours. The Parade is Sunday, as well. They are requesting a couple of things. First, a $7.00 donation to attend the festival would be a really cool thing, but it is only a donation suggestion, not a mandatory ticket. Second, parking is minimal, so if at all possible, walk or take the light rail. More information can be found at www.pridenw.org.

little. But, NOLA Pride is June 22-24 and you’re going to be in Seattle anyway. However! I would never let you down. Labor Day Weekend – and who doesn’t love an end of summer vacation? – brings you Southern Decadence down here in the Crescent City. If you don’t know, just trust me: it is everything you would expect from something named Southern Decadence. This is not a family-friendly event, nor is it for the faint of heart. It is, however, a city and a people embracing our more…flamboyant side. I’ll leave you to www.southerndecadence.net for more details, pictures, and generalized debauchery. And hope to see you there. Wherever you celebrate, Poppets, be sure to celebrate. Have Pride. Show your Pride. We are all worthy of greatness – and great Pride.

Until next month, Poppets, take care of you.

Surely, you know what July brings, right? July brings Pride to Bellingham – and our beloved Betty reigns supreme (as she always does). July 11-15, starting with a kickoff at Rumors with Betty Desire! It’s at 10:00 pm. I know you’ll be there. Friday night, The Betty Pages turns eight! Show your love at Rumors again. No cover before 10 and free food. Saturday and Sunday, it gets really big. Betty’s throwing a picnic, people are dancing and dressing, and the celebration kicks into high gear, culminating with the Parade on Sunday. If someone wants more information, point them to www.bhampride.org. Everything you want to know is there. But I promised you all summer, and I plan to deliver. Head over the border to Vancouver B.C. August 3-5 and celebrate there, as well. It’s closer even than Seattle, let alone Portland or Olympia! If you can only get away for one day, make it the 5th. The festival begins on Sunset Beach at 11:00 a.m, but the Parade is downtown at noon, so plan wisely. And my favorite event of the day runs from 4:00 to 7:00. It’s the Grey and Glamorous Dance, for “older and aging Queers and Allies.” Again, there’s a $5 donation request, but it’s just a suggestion. If you think you might make it up to our neighbors in the north, check out www.vancouverpride.ca. Finally, I can hear you now, wondering what’s going on in the queer Mecca of New Orleans for Pride. Surprisingly, the truth is very

You can be in Seattle June 21-24 at the Seattle Center. This one’s huge, Poppets, and if you’ve never been, I highly recommend it. There are men’s parties; there are women’s parties. This year, there are four stages of (almost) nonstop entertainment over four days. That being said, Sunday is the really big day. The formal, official festival runs from noon to 8:00 pm, immediately after the Parade. Enough goes on that I’m simply going to refer you to www.seattlepride.org and www.seattlepridefest.org for all the deets.

On May 10, 2012, educators, parents, students and the community are invited to attend two free presentations at Skagit Valley College. The first will be entitled The Science and Experience of Gender by faculty members Lynne Fouquette and Linda Jordan. If you think that gender involves two boxes on a form, think again. You will learn that gender is far more complicated that you ever imagined. Come gain information which we help you understand why so many people struggle with what seems like a very simple concept. You will be forever changed by what you learn. The second presentation is by attorney, Alexander Wu, regarding a court case in the Aberdeen School District. This case settled on January 26, 2012. A former student who endured severe and persistent harassment through junior high and high school, Russell Dickerson III, was awarded $100,000 from the district and the ACLU received $35,000 in legal fees. “This settlement sends a message to school districts statewide to take strong action as soon as they learn a student is being bullied,” said Sarah Dunne, ACLU-WA legal director. There will be a discussion about ways students, parents, school personnel and the community can support training and programs to prevent the need for legal action. Russell Dickerson III, now 20, is an African-American resident of Aberdeen. For six years, from 2003-2009 he was harassed by other students based on his race, sex, and perceived sexual orientation. “I learned from my parents that you should never give up. You should fight for your rights- you don’t just walk away.” said Dickerson. “Washington State has strong, legal protections in place to help students and their families, and we have great commitment in Skagit County to creating welcoming schools where all students may learn,” said Kathy Reim, president of PFLAG Skagit and a former teacher. “We hope many people will come away with dedication to continue the good work being done here.” These presentations will be from 2:00-6:00 PM. Come spend the afternoon in the Multipurpose Room in the Knutzen Cardinal Center at Skagit Valley College, 2405 East College Way, Mount Vernon, WA 98273. The workshops are sponsored by the SVC Rainbow Alliance and PFLAG Skagit County.

Spring Awakening was written in 1891 by German playwright, Frank Wedekind and the subject matter was so controversial that it was 15 years before the play was produced - in a heavily censored form. Fast forward to late 2006. Spring Awakening opens on Broadway as a rock musical. The date is still the 1890s in Germany, so is the dress, and the formality with which obedient schoolchildren address the adults in their lives, What is different is their tortured souls revealed in 21st century rock music. Poignant, funny, brave, revealing, and honest – the subject matter involves the social repression of the turn of the century - and sexuality - but not in a vulgar way. Though Spring Awakening won eight Tony Awards in 2007, it all but disappeared from the public’s mind, when the economic crash sent waves of fear across the nation and Broadway as well. The show one might expect to make a lengthy run, closed amidst the doom and gloom encompassing New York in early 2009. But it did catapult the careers of it’s leading lady and gent, Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, who have gone on to lead roles in television’s musical comedy series, Glee. Seattle’s Balagan Theatre produced the play in January of this year, and enjoyed so much success, and sold out houses that they chose to revive it for two more weekends in Seattle this April. The historic Lincoln Theatre is proud to collaborate with Balagan to bring this musical to the Skagit community, playing just one weekend, May 4-6 . J. EDGAR WHO?: A Gay Film Bibliography Bichoo Vrischik

David Denby is now closer to being an auteurist than he ever was. A onetime acolyte of Pauline Kael, who railed against the auteur theory (or politic), i.e., that the director of a film is or should be its sole auteur (author, in French), he took over when she retired from reviewing films in THE NEW YORKER in the mid-1990s. But Denby has by now written profiles of several directors (including Otto Preminger and Clint Eastwood) as well as stars (including Joan Crawford and Eastwood) for the magazine. Still, I think, he hasn’t burrowed into the psyche of a director, or his or her collaborators, and the meaning of those collaborations, quite far enough.

“I knew him well,” McGilligan quotes Lubin, “yet I never knew for sure…”

w w w. t h e b e t t y p a g e s . c o m

A case in point is an ambiguous phrase in Denby’s “The Man in Charge” (11/14/11), a review of Clint Eastwood’s biopic J. EDGAR (2011) on the ambiguous creator and director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI, a bureau under Hoover that became as nefarious as the crimes it investigated, held secret files on ordinary and famous citizens to blackmail them into cooperation and to out gay government employees. But is this film just about J. Edgar Hoover, or at age eighty-one, also about Eastwood? Denby’s rather odd sentence reads, “The frame of the movie is the Director, in old age, dictating the story of his career to a series of young men,” he continues “from the Bureau.” He does not include a name, J. Edgar or any of the others used to address Hoover in the film (many are used, mainly “John,” “Edgar” and “Speedy”). Even though the term “Director” is capitalized, the sentence to the ear suggests that Denby might unconsciously mean ‘director’ Clint Eastwood. This ambiguity is surprising as Denby published his profile of the actor-director in THE NEW YORKER as recently as 3/8/10. Nor does Russell Baker, the political commentator turned for the occasion into a film critic, in his piece on the same film “Overgrown Boys” in THE NEW YORK REVIEW OF BOOKS (1/12/12) spend much time on Eastwood beyond commenting on his “mellow” aging. Denby does go on to acknowledge Eastwood’s primary collaborator, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Gus Van Sant’s MILK (2008) Dustin Lance Black: “Black and Eastwood use this plot device ironically” as Hoover pumps up his own role in telling the story of the FBI. Denby also correctly states that the film never “suggests that the danger and the national weaknesses he combated early in his career were illusory.” But he delves no further into the minds of Eastwood and Black. Neither he nor Baker seems to have been reading THE BETTY PAGES.

used in short gay titillation films, and that may actually be more accurate: no images from the test have surfaced of which I’m aware). There certainly are early beefcake shots of Clint available -- Denby’s profile of Clint features one naked to the waist, his left thumb pulling down the top of his swimsuit, at a pay phone. Nobody liked the screen test except the girls in the secretarial pool at Universal-International, but Lubin kept giving him walk-ons, himself keeping 20% of Clint’s wages, until Clint’s six-month option was dropped. Lubin also departed Universal and gave Clint his first featured role at the dying RKO Radio studio in THE FIRST TRAVELING SALES LADY (1956), a film originally intended for Mae West, but now starring Ginger Rogers. Clint had the second male lead as a Rough Rider, his love interest of all people, Carol Channing. Lubin, to McGilligan, “had been so intimate with Clint that to some their relationship had raised eyebrows.” Between “long, private dinners” and “out-of-town trips” Clint posed for beefcake and was comfortable around Lubin’s gay friends.

As reported in these pages, as well as several biographies, the gay B-film director Arthur Lubin discovered the hunky Eastwood working at a gas station, a meeting possibly arranged by a third party or, according to a fan magazine correspondent quoted in Patrick McGilligan’s CLINT: THE LIFE AND THE LEGEND (St. Martin’s Press, 1999), Clint sat “’for hours on a Schwab’s drugstore stool in a tight sweater’ waiting to be discovered à la Lana Turner.” Whatever, Lubin tried to emulate the more successful agent Henry Willson, known as THE MAN WHO INVENTED ROCK HUDSON (see the book by Robert Hofler, Carroll & Graf, 2005), who had Troy Donahue, Rory Calhoun, Tab Hunter, Alain Delon, Robert Wagner and Guy Madison in his stable. Lubin soon had Clint under contract and screen tested in what all his biographies call only a “jockstrap.” (At the time posing straps were

Queer India - continued He featured Clint in one more film, ESCAPADE IN JAPAN (1957) before they parted, although Clint did appear as himself in one episode of Lubin’s TV series MR. ED (1962). Lubin went on to star Steve Reeves in Italy and Tunisia in a new IL LADRO DI BAGHDAD (THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD, 1961) while Clint toiled in spaghetti Westerns, until they both returned to Hollywood, Lubin for THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET (1964) with Don Knotts. Clint kept showing off his physique, particularly in bathtub scenes, in other films and right from his first film as a director, PLAY MISTY FOR ME (1971), in which he pushes Sondra Locke through a plate glass window, low-key lighting and misogyny -- so much so that Pauline Kael calling this Libertarian Republican a fascist may have driven him into therapy. (Another biographer notes that the therapist had already bought a house from him, so Kael shouldn’t take all the credit.) Clint did not contact or phone Lubin again until Clint won two Oscars for producing and directing the Best Picture of 1992, UNFORGIVEN.

Eastwood’s audience is the macho male and he certainly would not want to alienate that audience. Thus he has made a film about a duo ambiguously gay, in a film that for a gay critic isn’t a step forward from BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, but perhaps even a step backwards.

And so, after more than sixty films as an actor and thirty as a director (counting his documentaries) and two more Oscars, for MILLION DOLLAR BABY (2004), in which he unplugs Hillary Swank’s life support system, and now working in collaboration with Mormon-raised LGBT activist Black, Eastwood may still be trying to work out something about his own sexuality as much as Hoover’s in J. EDGAR. Whether we credit the presentation to Eastwood or Black, straight reviewers seem to ‘never know for sure’ about the portrayal of Hoover’s sexuality. Baker finds that Hoover and his assistant and longtime companion Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer, who portrayed BILLY GRAHAM in a 2008 film) only hold hands in the film. There are other clues, but anyone in denial can read their relationship as chaste. What is interesting is that Hoover is consistently presented as both a hero and victim of his times, even of the demands of his mother (Judi Dench) for him to not be a “daffodil.” Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio) states that he has evidence of John Kennedy (before he becomes President) having sex with “East German Communists,” but does not specify the sex of the Communists. Since Hoover uses gangster methods to curtail actual gangsters only after they do, his ‘alleged’ homosexuality, chaste or not, seems to spring from the tenor of an imperfect society. Despite reports to the contrary this Hoover attempts female drag only once, placing one of his mother’s dresses over his body after her death. The film is so tightly written, in a linear fashion, except for the moment when we realize that Hoover is exaggerating his own importance to that “series of young men from the Bureau” that it appears that the Lindbergh baby kidnapping is solved in the morning, JFK is assassinated in the afternoon, and that night after Hoover tells Tolson that he’s slept with Dorothy Lamour they have their first spat. The very next day at the races, it appears, Tolson has his stroke. Tolson becomes increasingly agitated over Hoover’s exaggerations as Hoover cares for him (Baker sees no evidence for Tolson’s agitation). As they age the pair take on prosthetic makeup that makes them resemble aliens in an old STAR TREK episode. When Hoover dies, Tolson approaches his half-naked, bloated body with genuine love in his eyes, and this is the closest thing to intimacy or flesh that we see in the entire movie.

So is J. EDGAR, a sort of Log Cabin Republican BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, as much about Eastwood as it is about Hoover? When asked about homosexuality during production, Eastwood told THE WALL STREET JOURNAL (1/29/11) that the script “didn’t go down that road.” But Black, in response, told the website AfterElton.com that the film would only go light on Hoover’s cross-dressing. Himself worthy of one, Hoover’s secret files have all been destroyed.
