LOOP TRAILS KENT VALLEY LOOP TRAILS SIGNAGE MASTER PLAN

KENT VALLEY LOOP TRAILS SIGNAGE MASTER PLAN PROJECT OVERVIEW The Kent Valley Loop Trails Signage Master Plan responds to multiple recommendations of the Kent Valley Loop Trails Master Plan. Proposed signage utilizes simple graphics, colors, and messages to provide consistent, useful information for trail users in an easy-to-read, safe, attractive and easily identifiable manner. Signs fall within the categories of wayfinding, safety, and distance. The locations for signs, fabrication, cost, ease of use, and construction details are given consideration. Implementation strategies are influenced by processes the city already has in place. Flexibility of use is stressed responding to the continuing development and modification of the existing trail system. WAYFINDING AND DISTANCE Kiosk maps at strategic points publicize the existance of Kent’s existing trail system that utilizes little used roads, bike trails, and pedestrian bridges. Recommended loops, distances, access points, facilities, and parking are highlighted to accommodate ease of use. A large goal of this master plan is comfort of use of the trails. One part of comfort is locational understanding. Signs announcing entry into Kent, and direction to adjacent cities are included in this plan, though these signs are outside the recommended loop system. Locational understanding is further enhanced with periodic signs indicating direction of and distance to nearby facilities and points of interest both on and o the trail. As the recommended trails are loops, no start reference points exist. Instead, the length of the trails is published on strategically located kiosk maps, and the periodic signs indicating distance to nearby facitilies and points of interest create a frame of reference for distance traveled. SAFETY AND DISTANCE Another part of comfort is safety. As there are areas of isolation along the trails, an emergency contact signage system is recommended, with an emergency marker every 1/2 mile.

Refer to the Kent Valley Loop Trails Master Plan for further recommendations for partnerships and safety to enhance the trail experience.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND ASSUMPTIONS Design • Review of existing signs, sign plans, and standards, as available. • Identify the different types of signs and the message carried by each: these include wayfinding, safety, distance, and interpretive. • Prepare conceptual ideas for the appearance and content of the signs. • Develop a palette of materials including sign blade, colors, graphics, and mounting options. • Research sign fabrication options. • Collaborate with City to discuss options and obtain design direction. Sign Plan • Prepare a plan indicating locations for various types of signs. • Prepare sign fabrication details and notes. • Prepare sign installation details and notes. • Prepare estimated costs for the various sign types and configurations. Deliverables: • Sign Concepts • Sign Location Plan • Sign Details • Cost Estimate • Trail Sign Guidelines • Assumptions • Interpretive sign content and text will be developed by others and is not part of this work. • Safety and police grid signs will be standard signs provided by others. Locations will be provided in the sign location plan. • The city has sign fabricators that will be provided for reference. • The city will provide installation standards.

DEVIATIONS FROM BOLLARD MOUNT

In some conditions existing structures can be utilized for trail signage (see below images depicting B8 condition). These opportunities should be sought especially in spatially constrained conditions such as B8. In these cases, trail signs are affixed to a 6”x48” panel painted Kent Parks green. The panel is then mounted to the existing structure.
