A Grand Finale for 2025

It’s true what they say: December really is the most wonderful time of the year. A contagious, joyous spirit fills the air, and Christmas lights begin to line the streets. South Texas temperatures finally drop, even if just for a moment, and we may hopefully get to spend some time with loved ones we don’t always see.

If you’ve yet to switch gears and fully embrace this season by the time you’re reading this letter, I am certain this issue will provide you with just the nudge you need. Starting on page 36, the “Holiday Survival Guide” offers local solutions to common holiday stressors.

If you’re not sure what to give the trickier people on your list—your kiddo’s teacher, your lovely neighbor, your co-worker you don’t know too much about—we’ve got a few ideas for that. Stressing over a perfectly baked pie for dinner guests? Several local bakeries are ready to do the work for you. Already running out of ideas on how to entertain all the visiting cousins? A festive workshop or two will relieve that stress and keep the DIY craft mess far from your beautifully

decorated home. From kid-friendly outings to the best light displays around, consider this your local roadmap to making the most of the season.

Continuing the yuletide theme, readers will also discover ways to give back this holiday season, (pg. 16); marvel at a home decorated in timeless Christmas fashion (pg. 28); get the inside scoop on the magic that awaits you on local theatre stages this month (pg. 60); and take a look back at the iconic Peppermint Lane’s origins in the ’60s (pg. 66).

The December issue always acts as a bit of a personal year-in-review for me. The calendar days are still in November as I write this, but coming to the end of the calendar serves as an opportunity to reflect and express gratitude.

Some of my absolute favorite covers The Bend has ever produced are from this year: a stunning floral arrangement styled as an art piece in a gallery, a surfer capturing the soul of an activity so intrinsically intertwined with the Coastal Bend’s culture and history, a stunning, black-and-white portrait for HER. Plus, some of my favorite stories we’ve ever told—the heartfelt histories behind mainstay taquerias; the life and legacy of John Olvey; the lasting influences of a few of our region’s most respected artists and how they’re inspiring the next generation of creatives—were penned in 2025.

I couldn’t be more proud of the group of talented individuals we work with to bring each issue to life. From our dedicated staff to the countless contributors, it really does take a village, and I am honored to work alongside the people in ours.

As the days of 2025 dwindle, I find myself reflecting on all this year has brought, which includes you, our wonderful readers. On behalf of the entire Bend team, I wish you and yours a joyful holiday season and a healthy, happy close to the year. I cannot wait to see what 2026 has in store for us all … I’ll see you there!

Leading the Way in Modern Healthcare

Corpus Christi FC’s new head coach and sporting director prepares

IN CONVERSATION WITH

Éamon Zayed

From the streets of Dublin to stadiums across four continents, Éamon Zayed has built a life defined by the beautiful game of soccer. The former professional footballer turned head coach has played and led teams in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and North America, absorbing a world’s worth of philosophies along the way.

Now, Zayed brings that global perspective to Corpus Christi FC as the club’s firstever head coach and sporting director, charged with shaping its professional identity ahead of its 2026 debut in USL League One. Drawn by founder Dr. Kingsley Okonkwo’s ambitious vision for the club and the Coastal Bend community, Zayed arrives ready to build something lasting both on and off the pitch, and help shape a new chapter for the sport in South Texas.

Kylie Cooper: Most recently, you led Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC through impressive growth and playoff runs. What lessons or takeaways from that experience are you bringing to Corpus Christi FC?

Éamon Zayed: Just like Northern Colorado Hailstorm, we will be building Corpus Christi FC from the ground up. On the pitch, we had great success in Colorado, breaking numerous records and winning the inaugural Jägermeister Cup in 2024. However, that success didn’t happen overnight; we grew it strategically over three years. I plan to utilize that experience to help grow a sustainable, successful club here in Corpus Christi.

KC: As head coach and sporting director, what’s your vision for this new professional era of Corpus Christi FC?

ÉZ: My vision is both short- and long-term. In the short term, I’d like to accomplish putting together a team that the city will be proud of. We want to be competitive in USL League One from day one. My long-term vision is to grow the club and have it consistently be successful in the league. I would like Corpus Christi to be a place where players want to come to develop and further their playing careers. Alongside a successful first team, I want to grow the Corpus Christi FC academy to be one of the best academies in Texas and give young players in our community a realistic pathway to professional soccer.

KC: In your experience, what does having a professional league mean for a city?

ÉZ: Professional soccer has that magical ability to bring the community together. It gives the community something to be proud of, support and engage in. It also welcomes professional soccer teams and fans from all over the United States to visit Corpus Christi and enjoy everything this city has to offer.

KC: How do you plan to engage with the local community as the team develops its fan base and presence?

ÉZ: Actions speak louder than words; I plan to get out and be involved with the community as much as possible. My wife is a school teacher, so getting out to schools with the players, having fun and getting the young community excited is what it is all about. Having a team that the community supports and is excited for is vital to the success of the team.

Corpus Christi FC’s new head coach and sporting director prepares for the team’s inaugural season in USL League One

KC: With the inaugural professional season set for 2026, what’s your immediate focus for preparation?

ÉZ: With six to seven brand-new franchises coming for 2026, there is high competition from other clubs for signing players. My immediate focus is on putting together a roster of players that will compete from day one and have a strong winning mentality.

KC: What’s your coaching philosophy, and how would you describe the type of environment you want to create for your players?

ÉZ: I would say I take a more holistic approach with my players. I am a “players’ coach.” I like to create an environment where players are freely able to express themselves, but challenge themselves to be better and get better every single day. I like to create a competitive environment in training, which challenges players to be on their toes every day and want to win in all aspects of life.

KC: You’ve lived and worked in many places. What excites you most about calling Corpus Christi home?

ÉZ: I’ve never been afraid to travel, explore and embrace new cultures. From my little experience with Corpus, the community has been very welcoming. Everyone has been extremely kind and helpful, and it’s always the people that make a new place feel like home.

Become a founding member of Corpus Christi FC and purchase season tickets now. The team makes its professional debut on March 21, 2026.

The Season of Giving

From toy drives to food distributions, find out how you can help those in need this December

As we dive headfirst into the holiday season, countless organizations across the Coastal Bend want every family to celebrate with food on the table, gifts under the tree and most importantly, dignity. Whether you’re looking to donate items, sponsor a local cause or volunteer your time, these organizations offer meaningful opportunities to give back and support our neighbors in need.

Esperanza de Tejas’ Annual Christmas of Hope

Join Esperanza de Tejas in spreading love and hope to Coastal Bend families this winter during its fifth annual Christmas of Hope event on Friday, Dec. 19. In partnership with Free Store Corpus Christi, the organization will offer a wide variety of free items for families in need. Organizers are asking for donations of several types, as well as volunteers to help ensure the event runs smoothly. Find the donation list and sign up for volunteer hours at esperanzadetejas.org.

The Salvation Army’s Adopt an Angel

Almost 50 years in, the Salvation Army’s Adopt an Angel program has become synonymous with the holiday season. Christmas trees adorned with white paper angels—found in La Palmera Mall, participating Walmarts and the Salvation Army store—bear the gift lists of children in need that volunteers will shop for. Lists include the child’s age, clothing sizes and desired toys. Participants must drop off purchased items at the Salvation Army administration building or store before Dec. 12. Those looking for a more hands-off approach can also digitally give wishlist items through Walmart’s Registry for Good.

H-E-B Feast of Sharing

Year-round, no store does more than our local H-E-B, and Christmastime is no exception. Each holiday season, the annual Feast of Sharing brings together families and friends in need for a celebration worth its weight in gold, offered at no cost to the community. Taking place on Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Hilliard Center, festivities will include a hearty dinner, live music and plenty of holiday cheer. Those interested in volunteering at the event can sign up for a time through the Google Form linked on the H-E-B website.

For more ways to give back this season, check out page 44 in the feature to learn about local toy drives.

Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi’s Community Christmas

Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi runs on community support. During the holidays, the center asks volunteers to help run its annual Community Christmas fundraiser. This event extends a helping hand to Coastal Bend families who need assistance with holiday dinners by distributing food baskets Dec. 16-18. Sign up to help Catholic Charities by filling out the volunteer registration form online. If interested in sponsorship opportunities, reach out to Becky Pugh at (361) 884-0651.

The Coastal Bend Food Bank

During the busy holiday season, consider helping out at your local food bank in whatever way you can. Drop off non-perishables and household items to the Coastal Bend Food Bank, or select an amount to donate through its website. To help on a more hands-on basis, sign up to pass out items by registering to volunteer online, where you can select a date and time that works best for you. For more information on acceptable donations and how to get involved, visit coastalbendfoodbank.org.

MOONLIGHT MASQUERADE GALA

Held on Nov. 1 at the H-E-B Foundation House, My DOC’s Moonlight Masquerade Gala brought together supporters for an elegant evening benefiting the nonprofit clinic’s mission to provide free prenatal and obstetric care to underserved women in the Coastal Bend. Guests enjoyed dinner, a silent auction and beautiful desserts from Bien Mérité alongside a stunning charcuterie display by All On Board.

BEACH BALL 2025

Serving as one of Texas State Aquarium’s biggest events of the year, Beach Ball 2025 was held on Oct. 3 at the aquarium. The fundraising event provided guests with a unique evening of up-close experiences with the beloved animal residents, live entertainment and more. Proceeds from the event benefit the aquarium’s Wildlife Rescue Program.

Ilove the buzz of the most wonderful time of the year, from dressing up for festive soirees with friends to soaking up cozy time with family. My heart overflows with gratitude as our church fills with parishioners there to celebrate the birth of Jesus and attend the Christmas pageant, with eyes glistening with nostalgia.

Of course, that magical sense of wonder can often feel fragile. An overpacked calendar and the delicate dynamics of extended family gatherings, with their wellmeaning yet sometimes unsolicited advice, can easily cause the mood to shift toward stress.

My best tip for staying centered is to intentionally lean into gratitude. By focusing on the blessings, both big and small, we can reframe our perspective and find a deeper peace amid the chaos. In that spirit, I’m sharing a few essentials that help me find my own sparkle (both literally and figuratively), nourish my skin against the winter chill and relax my mind. My grandfather taught me that it’s always better to give than to receive, and while these essentials are perfect ways to show yourself some self-care, they also make for thoughtful gifts for others.

THE ESSENTIALS

LIMITED EDITION PINK MIRAGE EYE SHADOW PALETTE BY BOBBY BROWN

Julian Gold, 3840 South Alameda St.

Neutral browns, luminous metallics and romantic pink tones complement the merriest of activities in this chic new eye palette from Bobby Brown’s holiday collection. The buttery smooth mattes blend like a dream, moving seamlessly from a polished daytime look to a captivating evening statement. The shimmers are pure, perfect for that subtle, head-turning glam. Although this palette is great for holiday sparkle, these shades are year-round staples of mine.

ARTISAN TALLOW

Grow Local Farmer’s Market

Southside Farmer’s Market

Sometimes the best skincare secrets are found not in a department store, but right in your own backyard. A spring visit to the Southside Farmer’s Market revealed a local gem: Countryside Naturals, a brand crafting incredible, Texas-made tallow products. The secret to its success lies in grassfed tallow, a hero ingredient with a fatty composition almost identical to our skin’s own sebum, making it highly absorbable and nourishing. Two of my favorites include the Tallow Face Balm with Frankincense and Myrrh and the Tallow Magnesium Butter. Frankincense and myrrh were ingredients chosen wisely to gift the tallow with a powerful blend of anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and healing properties. I love adding it as a final step to my nighttime routine and enjoy the aromatic experience of the essential oils within the balm. As for the Magnesium Butter, I keep a jar by my bed and do a quick swipe on the bottoms of my feet to improve my sleep quality.

Beyond the exceptional quality of the ingredients, the passion and integrity of the team at Countryside Naturals truly stand out. They are approachable and knowledgeable, and their commitment to quality is clear: They use tallow from Texas cattle that are born, raised and finished on grass. It’s this kind of care that elevates their products from good to exceptional.

issues within my lab work to address nutrient deficiencies and hormone imbalances, and has led me to a more functional and better quality of life with simple changes to my diet, supplements and regimens. Whites deck the halls

A Classic Christmas

The Whites deck the halls with tradition and timeless style

There’s a special kind of magic that settles over a home during the holidays; a harmony between memory and decoration, nostalgia and modern-day living. The chill in the air, the soft glow of twinkling lights dancing across glass ornaments and the hum of carols filling the air all contribute to a sense of eager anticipation, where every detail becomes a reminder of years past and dreams yet to unfold.

Within this glow, the home of Stuart and Shannon White comes alive, transforming into a picture-perfect reflection of holiday warmth and tradition. Much of the atmosphere is shaped by Shannon’s mother’s timeless commitment to crafting Christmas magic.

“She always loved decorating our big tree and every corner of my childhood home,” Shannon reminisced. “And I want to make it special for our kids, the same way I always felt it was special.”

The home’s crisp white walls lead to high ceilings, warm wide plank white oak floors and broad windows open to sweeping views of the family’s favorite retreat—the backyard patio and pool, which offers the perfect canvas for celebration born from family tradition. The transitional interior, elegant in its restraint and appointed with the help of Houston designer Shannon Crain, becomes an inviting canvas for the warmth and nostalgia of Christmas.

Decked in elegant place settings and holiday cards, the family dining table is central to the season.

Throughout the home, red and gold accents weave through classic greenery, creating a traditional tableau that softens the home’s clean lines and brings depth to each room. A mistletoe sprig suspended from an adorned garland greets visitors at the threshold leading into an open living, dining and bar area—a space perfect for holiday entertaining with family and friends.

At the heart of it all stands a magnificent nine-foot tree, topped with a multi-point star and voluminous jeweled ribbon. The tree’s branches, heavy with blown glass ornaments and framed photographs, capture years of growing children and joyful family memories. Trimmed with velvet ribbon, the bookcase sconces cast a gentle glow across white oak shelves filled with keepsakes from the family’s travels.

Photos

The cast stone mantel is lined in twinkling cedar garland with mercury glass ornament clusters glimmering at each corner. Hung by the chimney with care, needlepoint stockings stitched for every family member—including Smokey Bear, their beloved dog—capture the very essence of the season. Poinsettias add a pop of color to the fireplace and reinforce the symbolism of goodwill, celebration and cheer.

In the dining room, Shannon’s treasured collection of Spode Christmas Tree china sets the stage for holiday meals filled with laughter. “My mom and I have coordinating sets so we can share our pieces,” shared Shannon, which makes entertaining for a group easy. A winding garland down the center of the table makes for a unique way to display Christmas cards, serving as a daily treat to see old friends and recall memories together.

The nearby wet bar, finished in dark cadet blue with antiqued mirror backsplash, invites intimate conversation and a chance to spread holiday cheer, while a tucked-away formal powder room echoes the same deep blue. Its harlequin marble tile and a fluted floating vanity add a touch of sophisticated whimsy.

As the house hums with the joy of the season, it becomes more than a backdrop; it becomes a vessel for memory. Each detail honors the beauty of tradition and the timeless act of passing cherished rituals from one generation to the next. just as Shannon’s mother once did for her. In the Whites’ home, the spirit of the holidays glows brightly, reminding all who enter that love and memory are the truest decorations of all.

NOW GROWING

Butterfly Weed

Attract Monarch butterflies with their native habitat

The cold weather of December is the ideal time to dream of spring butterflies, and butterfly weed is the best plant to attract monarchs to your garden during their fall and spring migrations.

Butterfly weed is characterized by its long, upright, fibrous stems and coarse gray-green leaves, topped with vivid clusters of orange flowers. Historically, Native Americans used the plant’s tough stems to weave durable cords and rope.

Remarkably durable in the garden once established, this plant owes its resilience to the deep taproot. Although initial growth can be slow, it is exceptionally easy to cultivate. Historically, Native Americans used the plant's tough stems to weave durable cords and rope, as well as the plant's taproot to treat pleurisy, asthma and coughs.

Milkweed is essential for monarch butterflies, with butterfly weed being a favorite variety. The decline in Monarch populations is linked in part to the decrease in milkweed, their natural habitat. By incorporating more butterfly weed into our Coastal Bend landscapes, we can help ensure more of them survive.

Monarchs pass through our region during their fall and spring migrations, with the fall migration peaking in October and continuing into November; spring migration begins in March and peaks in April and May. Plant milkweed in your landscape now to host the passing monarchs this spring.

GARDENER'S NOTES

GROWING UP

Height, 18” to 24”. Plant from transplant in full sun. Butterfly weed thrives in well-drained soil and tolerates some dappled evening shade; however, excessive shade will impede its growth and reduce flowering. When planting, incorporate several inches of organic compost around the base, and repeat this process each spring. Fertilize with pastured poultry manure. Initially, growth may be slow, but the plant becomes very durable once established. It is extremely drought-tolerant; water only until established, as this plant withstands the worst of summer heat. Cut it back following a hard freeze. Butterfly weed is generally pest-free.

PROFILING

Butterfly weed can be leggy with long, upright stems. It is best when companion planted near other drought-tolerant and pollinator-attracting plants, such as flame acanthus, salvia, shrimp plant and lantana. The branches of these plants can grow intertwined and form a dense and vibrant mix of colors. Firebush and plumbago make a great backdrop for these plants. The combination of these plants will attract an amazing air show of butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators.

FUN FACTS

The monarch butterfly migration is one of the loveliest phenomena of the year in the Coastal Bend. Monarchs lay their eggs exclusively on milkweed plants, as the caterpillars feed on the leaves and the adult butterflies drink the nectar of the flowers, which make Monarchs poisonous to their predators. Butterfly weed is home, food and self-defense for Monarchs.

Peppermint Disco

A glitter-soaked holiday bash where festive meets funky on the dance floor

Guests hit the dance floor under a canopy of sparkling disco balls and metallic balloons, grooving to retro beats and modern remixes alike. From candy cane stilt walkers and peppermint-inspired performers to mirror-clad dancers with disco ball helmets, every corner shimmered with spectacle. Partygoers kept the energy high and the dance floor packed late into the night. Equal parts Studio 54 and winter wonderland, the party embodied a joyful, bold and brillantly over-the-top take on the season.

A Holiday Feast for All

Use these recipes to share joy with your vegetarian and vegan guests

Celebrate vegan and vegetarian holiday guests with vibrant, plant-based entrees that don’t skimp on flavor. A vegetarian lasagna layers tender pasta, roasted vegetables, rich marinara and creamy ricotta for a comforting centerpiece everyone will enjoy. For your vegan guests, creamy mushroom polenta offers a luxurious showstopper. Golden, pink, blue or Italian oyster mushrooms from Coastal Bend Mushrooms are showcased atop a bed of cheesy polenta, dotted with fresh thyme and sage. Make each guest feel welcome, no matter their preference, with plant-centered dishes that will wow the entire table.

RECIPE

Vegan Mushroom Polenta Serves 4

PREP TIME: 10 minutes

COOK TIME: 25 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

3 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp truffle oil

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 lb oyster mushrooms or baby bella mushrooms—brushed lightly to clean, removed from base, sliced into bite-size pieces

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 cup white wine

1 tsp fresh thyme, plus 3 sprigs fresh thyme

1/2 tsp ground sage

POLENTA:

2 cups water

2 cups vegetable broth

1 1/2 tsp sea salt, divided 1 cup organic polenta, medium ground

3 tbsp plant-based butter

1/2 cup vegan Parmesan, grated

2 tbsp nutritional yeast

DIRECTIONS:

Bring the vegetable stock and water to a boil in a large, rimmed saucepan. Slowly pour in the polenta in a steady stream, whisking constantly. Reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. The polenta is ready when it has absorbed the liquid and leaves the sides of the pan, while it remains runny. Stir in the butter, parmesan and nutritional yeast.

Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds, until fragrant. Add the mushrooms, salt and pepper and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Deglaze the pan with wine and cook until most of it is absorbed. Finally, add the fresh herbs. Spoon the polenta into a serving bowl and top with the mushrooms. Garnish with more cheese and fresh herbs.

RECIPE

Vegetarian Lasagna

Serves 8

PREP TIME: 20 minutes

COOK TIME: 50 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

1 red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded and cut into 1-inch pieces

1 medium zucchini, cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch slices

1 eggplant, cut lengthwise into 1/2-inch slices

8 oz mushrooms, stemmed and quartered

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Extra-virgin olive oil

12 oz oven ready lasagna noodles

40 oz marinara sauce

3 cups fresh spinach or arugula

2 cups grated mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves

Ricotta Filling

32 oz ricotta cheese

2 teaspoons lemon zest

1/3 cup fresh mint, chopped

1 teaspoon sea salt

1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the bell pepper, zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant and mushrooms on the baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes, or until tender. Reduce the oven temperature to 400°F. In a large bowl, stir together the ricotta, lemon zest, mint, salt and several grinds of pepper.

Assemble the lasagna by spreading 1 1/2 cup of the marinara sauce at the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Top with a layer of noodles, followed by half the ricotta mixture. Spread the ricotta in an even layer, then arrange half the spinach evenly on top. Top with half the vegetables and dot with 1 cup of the remaining marinara sauce. Repeat with another layer of noodles, followed by the remaining ricotta, spinach, vegetables and another 1 cup sauce. Top with the remaining noodles. Spread the remaining 1 cup marinara over the pasta, then evenly sprinkle with the mozzarella and parmesan cheeses. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the cheese is browned and bubbling. Serve with fresh basil and extra parmesan cheese.

The Path to Streat Corner Kitchen

Two sisters let their love for cooking Tex-Mex guide the way to their first brick-and-mortar

On a warm fall afternoon, Streat Corner Kitchen by Loli’s boasts a full house. The room is lively, conversations between friends flow freely and the accommodating staff shuffles among helping guests, preparing orders and running food out. Despite the busy atmosphere, as of this writing the family-owned restaurant received city approval to operate only a few weeks ago.

“[My family and I] celebrated our certificate of occupancy a week before opening,” said Sarah Flores, co-owner alongside her sister Sabrina Lozano. “We all wanted this spot to be right, which is why [renovating] took a year and a half. We encouraged each other all the way through, and that night, looking back on our journey as a family, was such a special moment.”

During their four-year food truck tenure as Loli’s Streatery, Flores and Lozano built quite a dedicated fanbase and made a name for themselves during Artwalks and weekly farmers’ markets. Named after their grandmother Loli, whose cooking they grew up on and who also once owned a restaurant downtown, the scratch kitchen serves reimagined versions of classic Tex-Mex dishes. Lozano described their

new locale on Water Street as a pictureperfect culmination of years of hard work.

“Those Artwalk nights were always a boost of confidence and a feel-good moment for us,” said Flores. “People are more receptive to our food and let us know when they like it. [Because of this], we always knew we wanted to find a space in the Artwalk footprint.”

A combination of family encouragement, love for cooking TexMex and a divinely timed Craigslist ad pushed them to commit to a previously unexpected food truck journey whose window opened for the first time in June 2021.

Their menu included traditional offerings like street tacos next to spinoffs

indulging in their own creativity. Of these creations, the loaded corn bowl became their first item to amass a sea of fanatics. Flores and Lozano’s corn-and-chile logo proudly credits Streat Corner Kitchen as the “home of the original loaded corn bowl.”

Along with the South Texas hot chicken — a twist on Nashville’s classic dish, plated with pickled jalapeños and Texas toast — both items remain fan favorites, selling well enough to have their own vegan counterparts. Still, the sisters encourage returning customers to explore the whole menu, recommending the 3 Cheesy Breezy and Lozano’s personal favorite, Mom’s Enchiladas Nachos, made with their mother Yvonne’s salsa recipe.

“A lot of our menu pulls from different cultures,” explained Flores. “We’re mostly Tex-Mex, but we also have Nashville-inspired chicken, a Korean-style loaded bowl and Cajun-style barbecue seasonings. But we’re always pulling it back into Tex-Mex with cilantro, lime and queso fresco.”

Flores fondly recalled the open-armed welcome she received from Chef Zelina Rodriguez of Galley Bistro when first arriving in the local

Sisters and business partners Sabrina

and Sarah Flores

food scene—now, having reached a new level of success, the sisters would like to do the same.

Inside their space, a mural by local artist Bella “Maple” Espinoza serves as a backdrop for customers eating in. A dessert case holding sweet bread from Melissa Martinez’s Something Baked sits front and center by the ordering counter. Much like those who helped them climb, Flores and Lozano don’t plan on pulling the ladder up behind them.

Authentic Artistry

New local boutique celebrates heritage built from the hand and heart

A&A Mexican Boutique, a celebration of Mexican culture and artisan craftsmanship, was founded by Norma Angelica Alvarez and Angelica Alvarez. The shop bursts with the vibrant colors characteristic of traditional Mexican garments, and the rich scent of handmade leather accessories fills the air. Just in time for the holiday season, shoppers can experience the beauty and authenticity of products typically only found in Mexico, right here in the Coastal Bend.

For 20 years, Norma Alvarez dedicated her life to raising her three children as a stay-at-home mom. With them pursuing careers of their own, the time has come to pursue her own dreams. “I’ve always wanted a business of my own. Now that the kids are grown, I can share what I’m passionate about, which is my culture,” she explained.

Over coffee, Norma and Angelica reconnected and discovered a shared vision: to establish a boutique that celebrated the authentic artistry of Mexico. Their goal was to showcase genuine, culturally inspired creations, steering clear of mass-produced imitations. This passion led them to partner and bring their vision to life.

Every item inside A&A Mexican Boutique tells a story. The embroidered blouses are hand-stitched, using traditional fabrics like manta, which is a 100% natural, unbleached cotton fabric. Leather purses and handmade shoes are sourced directly from Mexico, ensuring authenticity in every single detail. You can even find accessories that are handmade by the owners. However, the store’s deeper purpose goes beyond the products themselves: It aims to honor and uplift the hands that make them.

Open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and closed on Sundays.

“[These makers and artisans] work so hard, and that work often goes unseen, so we wanted to bring it here for people to see its value,” Norma shared.

The boutique’s mission extends to reviving traditions in the younger generation that may have lost touch with them. “We want to bring back that tradition for the girls who maybe want to represent the culture the way they grew up seeing their moms and grandmas did, so we want to pass it down, instead of it being forgotten,” Angelica explained.

From one-of-a-kind accessories to quality clothing, A&A Mexican Boutique celebrates the beauty and craftsmanship found in Mexican heritage, and Norma and Angelica Alvarez are proof that it is never too late to follow your dreams.

A Sweet Downtown Tradition

Holiday shopping on Chaparral Street is a Corpus Christi staple

hen you visit Downtown Management District's (DMD) Peppermint Lane this year, know you’re taking part in a time-honored Corpus Christi tradition. Revived in 2018, Peppermint Lane returns to its home on Chaparral Street where it served as the city’s holiday shopping destination in 1964 and ’65.

While the carnival rides, train and Santa photo ops may have attracted children to the original Peppermint Lane, it was Lichtenstein’s, Woolworths, Fedway, Kress, W.T. Grant and other shops, including numerous shoe, dress and jewelry stores, that drew throngs of holiday shoppers. The wide array of retailers provided an opportunity to buy for any age, budget and taste.

Today, The Cosmopolitan, with its architecture that mimics the iconic corner of Lichtenstein’s, stands on that

site amid the holiday decor that runs from Taylor to Lomax Streets. Lichtenstein’s is often the centerpiece of stories about shopping in downtown in the 1960s—its window displays alone were a destination.

In the street’s transformation into Peppermint Lane, holiday decor spanned four blocks of downtown and was sponsored by the Central Business District Association. A seven-member committee, the association functioned much like DMD does today, amplifying the work of downtown businesses to strengthen the entire area.

Whether you visited Peppermint Lane in the 1960s or not, the chance to kick off your shopping there, and support a strong downtown, lives on with DMD’s Peppermint Lane again this year.
