Make your vote count Do research before going to the polls At Augusta University, students and faculty watched the third U.S. presidential debate together on October 19, 2016.

The College Republicans, the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and the Department of Communication held public viewings of the third U.S. presidential debate at sites on campus, which brought diverse groups together for a surreal moment this year.

However, we watched the divide of America by watching the third U.S. presidential debate.

Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton.

Republican. Democratic. Russian president Vladimir Putin’s “puppet.” “Such a ‘nasty woman.’”

The 2016 U.S. Presidential Election has been an interestingly stressful, confusing, entertaining yet disappointing one. Many of us know that. Watching the presidential campaign on TV and social media has perhaps drained our brains.

Sharing political views to people has created more tension and has divided us in the United States of America.

But that does not mean that voting for the new president and vice president of the country is not important to do.

It is very important to realize that as American citizens, whether by naturalization or not, we can make a greater, absolute change on who we want and need as the president of the United States of America.

Our country is extremely diverse with multiple racial and ethnic groups of people that have expressed and shared their cultures to create American culture.

Today, America remains a huge “melting pot of cultures.”

American history continues to change with time. For the first time in U.S. history, Democratic U.S. Senator Barack Obama was elected as the first African-American

president of the United States of America in 2008 – making him the 44th President of the United States of America. He changed the traditionally ideal image of presidents and has made great contributions within his presidency – for example, being the first president to make real use of social media and have the U.S. Supreme Court legalize same-sex marriage in the country.

Now for the first time in U.S. history, we have Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton as the first female U.S. presidential candidate in any U.S. presidential election. And then, we have Republican candidate and celebrity Donald Trump in the presidential election.

There are many reasons that people, especially us college students, are encouraged to vote in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election.

One of main issues that affect more than half of college students is student debt, yet it never seems to get much attention. After graduating, the next step is to find a job, but as the unemployment rate fluctuates, we also should be concerned with how the economy is doing.

By voting, we can be the change we want to see pertaining to these issues now and in the future generations of college students.

If no one else votes with college students in mind, we can. The policies you vote for today will have a huge influence on your life after college. Do you really want to leave those decisions up to someone else?

We all have equal rights. One of them is the right to vote that many people fought for, including African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and women. Regardless of our individual demographics, think on the truth of having the privilege to make our voices heard because of the sacrifices of those who came before us.

Other issues such as police brutality and racism have been significantly highlighted within the past couple of years. As

a country, if we pride ourselves in being a safe place to live, we can’t be dissatisfied with how the system works especially when there are lives at stake and yet not try to take action in bringing forth change.

Remind yourselves of the First Amendment, which is found in the amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Think about the freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, the right to assemble peaceably, and the right to petition the government.

To see the importance of voting in this year’s presidential election, understand how important your rights are by just reading the Amendments to the U.S. Constitution for several minutes.

Voting can make a difference. It’s not a waste of time. If you want to make the most of your time, conduct thorough research on the candidates’ perspectives and proposed policies before they’re sitting in the oval office.

But you do not have to vote this year because of your personal beliefs. It is your choice. It’s your free will. However, if you do vote like many of us, voting really can make a difference in this year’s election.

Keep in mind that there is more than voting in the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. Check out and vote for U.S. Congress members, state government officials, local government officials, county officials, and more on the list.

Research their background information, such as job experiences, goals, interests, and plans.

Spend a few days, or even a few hours, on that information to inform yourself and others on who can be trusted.

Election Day is on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Search on the internet for voting information and locations in your local area. Get your classmates, professors, friends and family members to vote as well.

Do not vote foolishly. Do your homework, before you elect anyone in any hierarchical position on the vote ballot.

The title of the presentation is “WMD Proliferation and Emerging Technology: Challenges to Strategic Stability and New Terrorism Threats.”

Guest highlights on bioterrorism

By Sequoia Sinclair staff writer Dr. Margaret Kosal, an associate professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology, presented the topic of bioterrorism threats on Monday, Oct. 24, at Augusta University.

At 6 o’ clock that evening, viewers gathered in room N-126 of Allgood Hall to listen to Dr. Kosal’s presentation titled “WMD Proliferation and Emerging Technology: Challenges to Strategic Stability and New Terrorism Threats.”

Kosal stated the focus points for the presentation to the diverse audience.

“Something very important to me is, what does my work mean in the broader context?” she asked. “Whether it is potentially implementable and executable for national or international level security.”

At the beginning of the presentation, Kosal proposed the research questions she took interest in.

“The research question that I’m grappling with ultimately is understanding and explaining the role of technology in politics and war and to explain the role politics and war have on technology,” she said. “I do not want to be technologically deterministic.

Technology isn’t necessarily the only drive, they go back and forth.”

To put things into perspective for viewers about what bioterrorism may be, Kosal spoke about H5N1 or a flu virus that was made more transmissible. Essentially, for more people to be infected human to human. Others that she showcased were synthetic polios and small pox.

Because bioterrorism is fairly new to the game of war, creating guidelines and policy are a bit difficult as she explained.

a treaty is made to reduce the production of nuclear arms,” she said. “A pressing concern is a concept referred to as the ‘dual use conundrum.”

Dr. Kosal elaborated on the concept more.

“Does [the] technology have a use for military versus civilian?” she asked. “In biosecurity, the focus is on: what’s the intent?

If one is using these technologies to develop better counter measures, develop better protective measures that is acceptable as opposed to using technology to intentionally harm people, animals, agriculture, etc.”

When thinking about the advancement of bioterrorism, it is important to share that one cannot directly correlate the dynamics of biotechnology with nuclear weapons.

Kosal assured that idea for viewers.

“If one looks at the biological weapons of the twentieth century, there are none

that compete with nuclear ones,” she said.

Although bio weaponry is not competing with nuclear ones right now, it is still important to examine the existential threat or the potential threat of such things.

She discussed a real life example of what America faces today when it comes to bioterrorism.

Take for instance, CRISPR CAS9 one of other gene editing techniques where the germ lives. Dr. Kosal explored both sides of such a procedure. She explored some positive outcomes when examining the technique.

On the other hand, she explained an existential threat that CRISPR CS-9 may possess.

According to Darcia Schweitzer, a science writer at Pomega, there are specific pros and cons for such advances in biotechnology such as CRISPR CAS9 that correlate to what Dr. Kosal spoke of.

“CRISPR/Cas9 can be used as a therapeutic to correct disease-causing mutations and succeed as a tool for gene therapy.” Schweitzer stated, on the other hand. “CRISPR/Cas9 intensifies a host of ethical questions that already exist surrounding genetic modification. Caution is necessary to avoid unforeseen, long-term consequences that are irreversible.”

In today’s reality, Kosal talked about what a promenade threat is when thinking of bioterrorism.

“The most numerous bioterrorism in-

cidents are very low end,” she said. “They actually are hoaxes and threats. Particularly with the anthrax mailings in 2001 we saw a whole number of hoaxes and threats.

Terror is to have a psychological impact on people. By and large, hoaxes and threats are number one here in the U.S. Motivations and intent is important to study when dealing with bioterrorist threats.”

Moreover, Kosal spoke about the purpose of giving presentations on the subject of bioterrorism.

“I want to build bridges between Augusta Tech and AU,” she said. “It is important to show students that what they are learning has connections to significant real world problems. I also have a duty to communicate to the public. I am very passionate about these things. I encourage people to read and to be speculative. You don’t have to be an expert in bioterrorism to follow along with what is going on.”

Throughout her presentation, Dr. Kosal stressed the importance of exploring the bioterrorism threat using multiple disciplines such as chemist and engineers as well as the social sciences. She encouraged viewers to read and discern an understanding and be involved about the topic.

For students in the future degrees like electrical engineers, international affairs majors, biology majors, nautical engineer majors, computer scientists, and but not limited to chemists.

“Like they are doing now, I would look at it in the future as being less single person oriented and more so a team of people with different expertise working toward a common goal,” she said. “From a student’s perspective, as much as they don’t like it (and) as much as I didn’t like it, it means group projects!”

Men’s Basketball team tabbed as ‘Preseason Favorite’

By Will Cheney staff writer The Augusta University men’s basketball team is the favorite team to win the Peach Belt Conference for the 20162017 season, according to the conference’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll.

The Jaguars received nine of 14 first place votes, finishing ahead of Young Harris College, which received two votes.

Other institutions receiving first place votes included Lander University (2) and Georgia College and State University (1).

Augusta University finished the 2015-2016 season with an 18-11 record, making an appearance in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship before falling to Lander 87-86 in double overtime.

Head Coach Dip Metress is entering his 13th season at the helm of the men’s basketball program at AU. The two-time Peach Belt Coach of the Year comes into this season with high expectations.

Key players returning for the Jaguars

Augusta University finished the 2015-2016 season with an 18-11 record. include senior guard Keshun Sherrill and junior forward Kyle Doyle. Sherrill, a twotime All-American, was named to the preseason Peach Belt All-Conference team for 2016-2017. Doyle, an Augusta native, came to AU as a transfer from Georgia Southern University.

The AU men’s basketball has an exhibition against Wichita State University on the road for Saturday, Nov. 5.The regular season begins for the Jaguars at University of Mount Olive on Nov. 11, with the home opener coming Nov. 17 against Claflin University.

Two Jaguars Named Preseason All-Peach Belt

By Will Cheney staff writer Two Augusta University student athletes were named Preseason All-Peach Belt for men’s and women’s basketball, respectively.

Keshun Sherrill, G, Sr. A two-time All-American from Cleveland, North Carolina, Sherrill averaged 23.3 points per game during the 2015-2016 season while shooting 43.1 percent from the field.

Sherrill’s other career accolades include three Peach Belt All-Conference nods, along with two First Team appearances and the 2013-2014 PBC Freshman of the Year.

Breonna O’Conner, G, Sr. O’Conner started 29 games for the Lady Jags in 2015-2016, averaging 15.4 points per game along with a 46.9 shooting percentage. She logged 124 total rebounds, which was good for third on the team, and led the team with 78 steals.

She was named second team All-Peach Belt and to the NCAA Southeast Region All-Tournament Team.O’Conner is from Ville Platte, La. and came to Augusta University as a transfer from Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Fla. Contact Will Cheney at wcheney@augusta.edu.

CIA director says ‘cybersecurity is critical’ at the 2016 Cyber Georgia

By Kait Fruechting contributor The digital age creates a world of opportunity, innovation and progress. However, risks are inevitable and accompany these rewards. The risks within the digital age are centered on cybersecurity.

Augusta has become a center for cyber following the opening of Cyber Institute at Augusta University, the Army’s Cyber Academy at Ft. Gordon and the overall growth of NSA Georgia.

CIA Director John Brennan recognized the progress Augusta is making and the direction in which the city is heading concerning cybersecurity. Director Brennan spoke at the 3rd Annual Cyber Georgia event on Oct. 13 at the Harrison Education Commons Building on AU’s Health Science campus.

“Cybersecurity is aptly described as our nation’s new and uncharted frontier,” said Brennan.

In order to reach and cross the new frontier, a stronger cooperation of information sharing must exist to educate and protect against cyber threats. With a more

- CIA Director John Brennan open system of information sharing within industry, academia and government, not only can potential threats be recognized but also gaps within security can be filled.

“Cybersecurity affects us all,” said Brennan. “It is really something that we all need to work on together.”

Cybersecurity affects everyone from the individual level to the private sector and within the government itself. Each level must take the initiative to educate and protect themselves from potential threats.

Entities threatening cybersecurity from the outside or even within the public systems include nation states, hacktivists and script kiddies.

“Terrorism is not going anywhere,” said Brennan. “Everyone must understand the constant risks.”

Following his first keynote address, CIA Director Brennan sat with Senator

Saxby Chambliss for a fireside chat concerning cybersecurity. Each reinforced his own stance and answered questions from the audience. While the director is not a fan of the television show “Homeland,” he expressed his passion for his job and his desire to continue.

Director Brennan warned against American’s willingness to share personal and financial information. He described how people are generally willing to give up such information but still is reluctant to government oversight and protection.

While he is not a fan of “Homeland,” he may be a Rolling Stones fan. In order to protect the Americans, the American people must give up some freedoms.

So he may agree with Mick Jagger in that “you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you get what you need.”

As it becomes ever clearer that cybersecurity is critical, should Americans be open to possible governmental oversight to protect from inevitable and constant risks?

AU honors Coming Out Day

By Sequoia Sinclair staff writer In honor of National Coming Out Day, the Lambda Alliance hosted “The Good, the Bad and the Complicated” event on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 2:30 p.m. in the JSAC Coffeehouse.

A panel of four discussed their coming out story and its impact following a short film directed by senior communication major Christine Rosenbaum.

More than 80 people attended the event. Dr. Darla Linville, faculty advisor for the Lambda Alliance (or LAMBDA), said the faculty members spreaded word of the event to their students to encouraging them to observe.

“People came to get knowledge and a deeper understanding of the LGBTQ+ community through the lens of Augusta University,” said Linville. “Especially when there is not much opportunity to speak on this subject elsewhere.”

The panelists were Natalie Pudim, Tamika Harris, Mitchel Toomey, and Bill Hight.

Host Linville asked, what is the best part about coming out? In many words, the panel explained that self-acceptance is primary— it reduces anxiety, allows one to live without barriers or shame and establishes intimate relationships.

“I could weave out all that wasn’t me in the first place,” said Natalie Pudim.

When asked what could be expected after coming out, Bill Hight shared his story.

“Where I met them, may not be where I want them to be,” Hight said. “On the journey in life we are all at our own place of understanding the world and others. Some people may catch up to you, others may not. Do not give up on yourself be confidant in yourself or the relationship you

Linville explained the preparation for the event.

“A new approach to Coming Out Day this year are intersecting identities: The LGBTQ+ community is full of differences,” she said. “Sexuality or gender identity is a small portion of how people identify themselves. It is important for Augusta University to highlight all characteristics of identity to eliminate the dichotomous perception of one either being gay or straight.”

When asked if the event was tailored to the LGBTQ+ community, Linville said there’s a lot of media attention on the topic.

“The event informed everyone to include allies about the topic,” she said.

The panel also discussed when it is or isn’t appropriate to be “out.”

“I set in a classroom once where a conversation about sexuality came up and I

felt uncomfortable by the closed-minded views that students had,” said Tamika Harris. “Once I came out it gave the students a new perspective. At times it is important to be out in the classroom because it makes situations real and relatable.”

In addition, Mitchel Toomey does research with LGBTQ+.

“Being out can help,” Toomey said.

“As a gay man, I can relate to issues in the LGBTQ+ community.”

Linville mentioned an important takeaway from Coming Out Day. “We are here and you need to think about us, for inclusion, when making policy,” she said. “All the gay people are not just someplace else, like New York or Atlanta.

There is a community here and there are people to connect with.”

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

AU lights up the Teardrop with Purple Lights

By Sequoia Sinclair staff writer The Augusta University Teardrop lit up with purple lights on Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m., in honor of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Dr. Allison Foley, an associate professor in sociology, hosted the Fifth Annual Purple Light Nights with four panelists that spoke about pressing concerns in regards to intimate partner violence.

While the history of the Purple Light Nights panel is usually informative, one panelist shared her survivor story. Dr. Meredith Rausch, a professor in the department of counselor education, leadership and research, discussed the conventions of emotional abuse.

“Intimate partner violence is often associated with physical abuse, but in many cases, that is not true,” said Rausch. “My partner humiliated me in public, isolated me from the people I loved

and accused me of everything wrong in his life. He took away my autonomy.”

The story encapsulates the reality of intimate partner violence.

“These types of relationships may not break bones, but they break spirits,” Rausch said.

“Through counseling, I evaded the trauma of emotional abuse.

Working therapy is the road to self-rediscovery and healing. It is very difficult but worth it in the end.”

In agreement, the panelists urged their audience to find and tell a trusted friend, family member, faculty or staff, if someone is experiencing intimate partner abuse. Be the ear and support for those who may be in a dangerous situation.

Yasmin Thomas Goodman, a veteran SafeHomes legal advocate, spoke about options people have when leaving a dangerous relationship.

“Intimate partner abusers wear many hats,” Goodman said.

“It is financial as well as emotion-

al, social, isolation, sexual, and physical.”

Goodman defined domestic violence as “a pattern of cohesive and controlling behavior and tactics used by one person over another to gain power and control over that person.”

How can someone safely leave an abusive relationship?

“A safety plan,” Goodman said. “Advocates will brainstorm scenarios or situations in which the victim evacuates. It is important that the victim grabs certain documents such as their ID and social security. Do not allow the offending to have access to such documents to control you. Call SafeHomes, they will provide services that cater to different domestic violence situations.”

Catherine Patrizio, sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) at University Hospital, explained to viewers about handling sexual assault.

“When someone discloses that they were sexually assaulted the hospital will take the victim to

a room and ask them to disclose the details,” said Patrizio. “There will be a doctor, a nurse, a Rape Crisis Sexual Assault Advocate, and the police will be called to listen to the statement—so the victim does not have to state it more than once. The hospital will ensure that confidentiality is respected and legally have to oblige.

It is the victim’s choice in how they chose to go forth with the examination.”

Patrizio added that sexual assault is not only done by a stranger.

“The fact is that 75% is actually done by someone [the victim] knows,” Patrizio said.

Michele Reed, the new Title IX coordinator discussed what Augusta University does for students in the event of an intimate partner dilemma.

“I guide students through the process once he or she may have disclosed abuse or harassment,” Reed said. “I can refer students or employees in the right direction.

I also empower them to make the

decision that is right for them at the time. If a student or employee wants to pursue through Title IX, it is a civil process not a criminal one.”

Reed said if a student disclosed the experienced intimate partner violence but do not want to pursue a criminal investigation, she can implement an order of no contact or modify classes to create a safe environment for all personnel involved.

Purple Light Nights on Oct. 5 was the kickoff for other events in Domestic Violence Awareness Month in order to raise awareness on the resources that Augusta has for those experiencing intimate partner violence.

When asked why it is important to host events like Purple Light Nights, Dr. Alison Foley said that it is “to empower people with knowledge, to honor those no longer with us because of domestic violence and to celebrate survivors.”

Walk is for survivors and a time of silence for those who are not

By Sequoia Sinclair staff writer People gathered at the Augusta University Teardrop for the SafeHomes Survivors’ Walk on Oct. 20 at 6:30 p.m. to show respect and to hear two individuals share their “Stories of Hope” in dealing with such issues as intimate partner violence and stalking.

Executive Vice President Russell Keen spoke at the SafeHomes Survivors’ Walk.

“You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option,” said Keen.

He brought awareness to Title IX and showed his gratitude for SafeHomes.

“Strength in fighting against domestic violence while using organizations like Title IX and SafeHomes is the only option,” said Keen.

District attorney Ashley Wright also spoke at the event.

“Domestic violence does not affect just one person,” Wright said. “It also hurts that persons loved one’s.”

Wright said the first primary goals are to get the victim to safety and to insure it does not happen again.

“SafeHomes says that it takes seven acts of abuse before a victim leaves,” said Wright. “Seven acts too many. The community must work together to help one another.”

Followed by the “Stories of Hope,” Aimee Hall, executive director at SafeHomes of Augusta prepared the guests of the event for a small walk around the campus. She requested a moment of silence in honor of people who have been murdered due to intimate partner violence.

After the crowd rendered silent, students in the social work department lit candles for everyone.

During the walk, Hall listed 62 names off the “Remember My Name” list detailing deaths in Augusta from Oct 2015 to Oct 2016. These names were also written in chalk on the concrete for all of Augusta University students to see.

According to the 2015 report from the Georgia Domestic Violence Fatality Review Project, it report-

ed 139 fatalities in Augusta, Ga. – specifically, one in Columbia County and five in Richmond County.

As the walk came to an end, volunteers handed out purple balloons in respect to the Domestic Violence Awareness colors. On the count of three, everyone released their balloons into the air completing the ceremony.

AU pops up at Parkinson’s Walk

By Kait Fruechting contributor About 50 members of the Augusta University community helped make up the estimated 400 walkers that answered the call for movement by participating in the CSRA Parkinson’s Support Group’s 17th Annual People of Parkinson’s Walk.

The People of Parkinson’s Walk, or the POP Walk, took place on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the First Baptist Church of Augusta.

The university entered four teams, which included physical therapy students, faculty from the Department of Physical Therapy, and staff from the Movement Disorders Program at AU. “In our training, we learn the importance of movement especially for Parkinson’s patients,” said Katie Magoni, a second-year student of physical therapy.

“We all wanted to show our support!”

The walkers included family members, friends, healthcare providers, and Parkinson’s patients.

While the course was two miles, the ultimate goal was to help every Parkinson’s patient complete at least one lap equaling a quarter mile.

The donations pledged and collected at the event brought in more than $39,000.

The sponsors of the POP Walk are still calculating donations.

“The purpose of the walk was to provide grant money for ongoing research, to provide literature, resources and support to the public, and to establish new exercise programs suitable for Parkinson’s patients,” said Mary Ann Navarro, board member of the CSRA Parkinson’s Support Group.

The local support group recognized Drs. Mohan Wakade, Raymond Chong and John Morgan before the POP Walk.

Wakade and Chong are professors

and researchers within the Department of Physical Therapy. Morgan treats patients alongside a team of physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists in the Movement Disorder Program at AU. Joe Kelley, vice president of the Parkinson’s Support Group, awarded the three doctors a grant totaling $13,000 to continue their research on Parkinson’s disease.

The awarded grant money was provided by the local support group.

To help promote the importance of movement among people living with Parkinson’s disease, demonstrations in various low impact activities were held before the walk.

Rick Pukis, instructor of tai chi and assistant professor in communication at AU, lead a demonstration in tai chi.

“Tai chi is an excellent, low impact exercise for individuals who have Parkinson’s

and other movement disorders,” said Pukis.

“Tai Chi keeps the energy flowing.”

Some walkers participated in the exercises, but others took advantage of the available information provided by Augusta University’s Movement Disorders Program. The university’s information booth provided the public with literature on the disorder, an explanation of the current treatment and ongoing research at AU and the available support programs.

Dr. John Morgan, a neurologist and member of Augusta University’s Movement Disorders Program, spoke with participants and welcomed questions regarding concerns.

“Events such as this unite us all,” Morgan said. “It is a day of positivity as everyone can feel the support of family, friends, doctors, and researchers.”

Understanding domestic violence through the perspectives of local law enforcement

By Sequoia Sinclair staff writer The domestic violence panel changes their theme each time. At this year’s panel discussion, the speakers discussed their role in law enforcement and shared their experiences in handling intimate partner violence.

The “Policing Domestic Violence” panel discussion was held in room 170 of University Hall at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19.

Officer Samuel Long from Grovetown Department of Public Safety explained his role.

“I am the initial response to an investigation,” Long said. “I try to figure out what the underlining problem is that started the incident. Ultimately, to figure out what the best route to take is.”

Long provided multiple examples during the panel discussion.

“To defuse things, it may be to separate both the individuals or make an arrest. Sometimes it’s to arrest both parties,” he said. “There needs to be a sufficient, probable cause to make an arrest. Georgia has very good laws. It can be difficult at times, but that’s what I do on a day-to-day basis.”

Long disclosed one facet of how law enforcement can get involved with domestic violence.

The Richmond County Sheriff ’s Office provided some insight.

Sergeant Langford, a homicide Sergeant, explained his role in law enforcement.

“Usually, I am the latter of the ones to get involved,” said Langford. “Once the forefront deputies make the case, I assist on which way to go and investigate more in-depth to make an arrest.”

In certain cases that do not involve death, Langford takes part in helping make arrest.

“Does the victim need assistance?” He asked. “Some need assistance to go forth with an arrest because the victim may be afraid, or in love with the offender. I try to find a probable cause when there is little cooperation from the victim.”

When asked to discuss how domestic violence cases differ from other cases, Jennifer Harper, who represents Military Police took the question. She said it is hard because if the victim does not want to go forward with pressing charges there is nothing she can do.

“It is common in the military,” said Harper. “Victims usually want to protect their spouse and are more focused on the career of the soldier than for themselves.

To further explain her discomfort, Harper said that “you can see they want to get help but they’re not going to and that’s what is hard.”

“Most of the time, they don’t,” she said. “Sometimes, it ends in death of the victim or the child or even the soldier.”

The Captain of Augusta University Public Safety Police Ted McNeal emphasized, “Get help! Know that Augusta University has laws in place to protect you.”

“My goal is to make sure you are here to learn in a safe environment,” said McNeal. “If there is a problem, please communicate. We offer counseling and can guide you in

the right direction.”

After the “Policing Domestic Violence” panel on Oct. 19, Chief of Police James Lyon and Cpt. McNeal further discussed the topic on domestic violence.

When asked what are the pressing issues at AU in regards to domestic violence, police Capt. McNeal said the problem is communication.

“According to reports, intimate partner violence is slim to none,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Students may be afraid of retaliation, scared to come forward, or don’t know where to go to get info.”

What are ways that can help people come forward about intimate partner abuse on campus?

Chief of Police Lyon pressed on communication as well.

“One of the purposes of setting up these educational programs are to create an environment where polices officers get out in the community to build trust,” he said.

“We are going to roll out more officers on bikes. This is going to allow students and officers to be more personal.

We want you to feel more comfortable.”

Police Capt. McNeal closed the panel by describing police officers as “guardians and warriors.”

“When you think of police officers, there is negativity associated with that,” he said. “It is important for people to know officers outside of getting in trouble and to know they are there not to just react when something goes wrong. You can trust us. In a situation where a warrior is needed, that is what I’ll be.”

AU dances the night away

By Kait Fruechting contributor Dancing is fun and can bring joy to everyone. However, for a cause it is so much more.

Jaguar Miracle and the Augusta University chapter of Alpha Delta Pi brought the Miracle Children of Augusta University into the spotlight at the Miracle Network Dance Marathon on Oct. 28 in the JSAC Ballroom.

Kids, parents and students alike danced six hours to raise money for the children’s hospital in Augusta.

At the top of each hour, the music and dancing stopped, everyone took a knee and a miracle child was introduced.

Sophomore student Will McCoy introduced the first child of the evening event.

The cause is near and dear to McCoy’s heart as he too is a miracle child having survived Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

“The most important thing is to help kids realize it is going to get better,” said McCoy. Reese, 6, took the stage and melted the hearts of the crowd.

Everyone could see his happy nature on stage and later as he put his singing skills to the test to serenade the crowd.

“Hang in there,” is the advice that Ashley Smith, Reese’s mother, would give to any parent whose child is sick. spoke not only of his hospitalizations but also of how he remained happy and social. Reese has overcome six birth defects, has received a kidney transplant and has had over 50 surgeries.

With each hour, children were introduced creating awareness and showing the determination the kids have.

The Miracle Children included Reese, Avery, Isabella, Lyrik, and Abby.

Throughout the six-hour event, more than $16,000 was raised proving that the first Annual Miracle Network Dance Marathon was a success.

While dancing is fun, it i the cause that matters and makes the difference.

“I just love that you are dancing and having fun for those that cannot always get up and dance for themselves,” said Katy Hodges, an event volunteer.

Homo Sapiens: ‘A merticulous, meditated film’

By Sequoia Sinclair staff writer “Homo Sapiens” is a very meticulous, meditated film composed by director Nikolaus Geyrhalter. This non-conventional piece of work exposes its viewers through a series of desolate human-made structure where nature occupies its vacancy.

We are encouraged to create our own narrative - void of narration or music.

As I sit in the Maxwell Theater, the film delivers like a virtual art gallery or museum.

The frames last at least 30 seconds each, which is not what the fast-paced viewers are used to. This technique alone makes humans confront their normative lives and slows down the pace.

In return, it leads us to reflect on tantalizing questions.

Despite the irony of abandoned structures and the title, Geyrhalter says this film “very powerfully portrays [the] moment. By being so radically absent, human beings are all the more present. In that sense it is a film about people even though they are not there.”

For me, the film was a poem.

Percy Bysshe Shelley’s poem “Ozymandias” continued to creep through my thoughts with each changing frame.

Lines 11 and 12 specifically says, “Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair! / Nothing beside remains...”

This addresses the desire for humans to seek immortality through structures or art, but in actuality, we only provide a vessel for nature to prevail.

The imagery in “Homo Sapiens” supports this claim.
