About Our Cover
HALFMOONCAYE
Footsteps on the beach will fade away with the tide but memories of this place will not so easily be forgotten
On Belize's most easterly landmass lies, in my opinion, one of its best beaches. Half Moon Caye is a diverse place both above and below the water Teeming with life, no wonder it was Belize's first nature reserve and Central America's first marine protected area With crystal clear blue waters, a fallen lighthouse and a deep sandy beach popular with sea turtles for nesting; out here feels different to other islands around the country, it feels wilder. (Tom
Hines) PHOTO BY TOM HINESWELCOME TO BELIZE
Belize our Jewel, my homeland! 8,867 sq. miles of rich, diverse and vibrant culture, where the waves of the Caribbean Sea gently kiss the sandy shores of Central America Here, sustainability and conservation are not just buzz words, it is our way of life As a destination, Belize is unrivaled Of course, we have the prerequisite sun, sea and sand, that other tropical destinations offer However, we are also home to some of the warmest and friendliest people you will ever meet, as well as, the longest living Barrier Reef in the world, the Great Blue Hole, ancient Maya sites, a lush rainforest and many marine, bird, wildlife and forest reserves.
The Belize Hotel Association’s membership includes the best beach resorts, jungle lodges, private islands and business-class hotels in the country Located throughout the length and breadth of Belize, our members give you access to the most thrilling adventures, the tastiest of culinary delights and the most interesting blend of ethnic cultures you will find anywhere in the world.
I could go on and on about our tranquil haven, ideally nestled just south of Mexico on the Central American mainland I could talk endlessly about our history, our traditions, our food and our people, but I have an even better idea: come see for yourself! Consider this, my personal invitation to visit Belize, my homeland Where every sunrise brings adventure anew and every sunset punctuates new memories of a day well spent. Come dive the Great Blue Hole or snorkel the Belize Barrier Reef; Climb El Castillo at Xunantunich or trek through the Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Preserve at dusk; Learn the history of our country, from buccaneer and pirate settlement to highly sought-after tourism destination. Try some hudut, some caldo and our national dish, rice & beans with stewed chicken Whatever you do, while you are here, your Belize experience is guaranteed to be UNBELIZEABLE!
See you in Belize soon!
Reynaldo Malik Jr. President Belize Hotel AssociationWelcome to Belize, The Jewel There really is no wrong time to visit Belize – it is the perfect destination to visit year-round with our weather as warm as our friendly Belizeans Here, you will find a wide variety of off-the-beaten-path experiences waiting for you Whether you are here on vacation, for business, or looking for the ideal place to retire, Belize has it all!
The heartbeat of our country is our people. We are enriched with the heritage of the Maya, Mestizo, Garifuna, Creole, East Indian, Mennonite, and others. The result is a colorful mosaic where each corner of the country boasts its own special dishes, traditions, festivities, music, and art. Get ready to taste the best home-made corn tortillas you’ll ever have, dance beachside to Punta rhythms, and make bean to bar chocolate in true ancient Maya fashion. Our people share their cultures with pride and co-exist in harmony.
With sustainability at the core of our tourism planning and development, we are champions for conservation. We are proud of our 185-mile-long Belize Barrier Reef, the longest living reef in the Western Hemisphere, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our reef and three coral atolls, as well as the Great Blue Hole, are home to some of the world’s best diving sites. We also boast 103 protected areas, comprising national parks, bird and wildlife sanctuaries, and forest and nature reserves – including the world’s first jaguar preserve.
The opportunity to experience Belize’s pristine natural beauty should not be missed If you are an adventure enthusiast, Belize is the ultimate outdoor playground From exploring limestone caves, climbing ancient Maya temples, ziplining over green canopies, and swimming with nurse sharks, the hardest decision you’ll have to make is how to fit it all in during your stay
Whether you are calling Belize home for only a few days, returning for a longer visit, or looking to make your stay permanent, let me officially welcome you to The Jewel - Belize Have a wonderful stay!

Belize is a vibrant hub for nature and adventure With one foot in the Caribbean and another in Central America, the pocket-sized nation brings to the table an eclectic mix of experiences It offers an astounding diversity of experiences with wild interiors, breath-taking seascapes, Ancient Maya sites, a vibrant culinary sceneandrichculture Indeed-Belizeisa prime spot for discoveries for all traveller types But where to start?! Local travel expert Louise Roe, from ROEMing Belize, shares her top experiences and activities fortheBestofBelize.
Belize is home to the second largest Barrier Reef in the world, which cuddles the coast for 185 miles. So it’s no surprise, this is my top recommendation for all travellerswhenvisitingBelize Snorkel, dive, fish, sail, swim or simply bask in the sunour reef and pristine waters make Belize a paradiseforwaterlovers
But where to base yourself to take full advantage of the water? In the South, laid back coastal villages such as Placencia and Hopkins act as the perfect base for all your marine adventures From here, you can cruise or sail to off the beaten path islands such as South Water Caye and Laughing Bird Caye Snorkel, dip or dive the vibrant waters that surround these palm studded islands, setting your sights on an abundance of vibrant coral and marine life and meeting local underwater residents from loggerhead turtlesandnursesharks.
Opt for the islands in the North of Belize, CayeCaulker andAmbergrisCaye Ashort 15 minute flight from the Belize International airport or a picturesque ferry ride and you have arrived in paradise The Belize Barrier Reef is situated less than a mile from the shores, allowing you to take your pick of marineadventures
IfIhadtochooseabucketlistexperience–
A full day trip to dive or snorkel the world renowned Great Blue Hole, in Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Choose to see this giant sink hole from below with a dive or above with an incredible helicopter or airplane ride. Bothareunbeatable.
My top tip: Head a little further South to GladdenSpitandSilkCayesMarinereserve during the months of March to June to experience a once in a lifetime dive with Whale Sharks Craving a location with a bit morehustleandbustle?
For the nature enthusiast, Belize’s interiors brim with everything wild and free. Approximately 60% of Belize’s land is rich jungle with over 28% protected as nature reserves. Head to jungle-clad Western Belize and base yourself in the Cayo District Here, you can explore mysterious caves, ancient Maya Sites, and waterfalls all tucked within Belize’s lush jungle
Avid hiker and adventurer? Mountain Pine Ridge is a must on your Belize list Remote innature, theforestreserveis
teeming with gushing rivers, natural pools and waterfalls Hike dirt trails to mystical waterfalls such as Big Rock Fall or looking for something a little less strenuous set your sights on 1000 foot falls, known to be the tallest waterfall in SouthAmerica
My top tip: Adrenalin lovers with an interest in history? Plan a visit to Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Considered one of the most important sacred caves in the world by National Geographic, it’s exploration combines adventure with archaeology Highlight of the trip includes seeing artefacts and skeletal remainsknownasthe "CrystalMaiden"
Further south, verdant vistas and wildlife await Hike paths the elusive jaguars and the tapir do at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary Considered the world’s first jaguar preserve, this reserve is a safe havenforallofBelize’swildcatsincluding Puma, Ocelot, Margay, Jaguar, and Jaguarondi. THE ART OF TRAVELING
Take some time to consider what you really want When it comes to sustainability, different countries have different priorities. In Belize, our thriving tourism industry supports over 28,000 local jobs and is driven primarily by reef-related activities. The health of our reef and mangrove ecosystems, therefore, directly impacts the food we eat, the livelihoods we hold, and the coastal protection and recreational enjoyment we all enjoy.
How we manage our natural resources is critical to ensuring that Belize continues to provide a world-class vacation experience, while supporting a healthy ecosystem balance.
Recognizing this, Belize is one of several countries in the region leading the charge for sustainability From becoming the first country in the world to put a moratorium on all offshore oil exploration and drilling back in 2017, to phasing out of Single-use Plastic and Styrofoam products this past March, Belize has celebrated several recent conservation victories that will go a long way to ensuring that our home remains a sustainable tourism destination for local and international tourists
These national efforts are also bolstered by many local resorts, restaurants, and businesses, opting to offer environmentally conscious policies and solutions
Despite conservation efforts, however, these resources are under pressure due to human induced activities such as development projects, resource exploitation, climate change, and other stressors
To minimize the impacts of tourism to the point that Belize’s economy, its people, and its environment can all mutually benefit, here are a few suggestions/tips on how to be a sustainable traveller while in Belize
SUSTAINABLY
Pack Re-Usable Items And Avoid Single-Use Plastics
By opting to travel with re-usable bags (canvas totes), bottles (with built-in purifier if needed), or even cutlery (plant based), you minimize single-use plastic waste ending up in communities and reduce your impact to the environment
Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
When on the Cayes/Islands, choose to rent a canoe, bike, or electric golf cart While on the mainland, choose public transportation such as buses that are available in most towns Of course, walking is the most sustainable way to get around, allowing you to go slow and take in the natural Belizean scenery
Opt For Bio-Degradable/Reef-Safe Products
Prior to traveling to Belize, try doing some research and sourcing biodegradable toiletries (preferably also in bio-degradable packaging), and reef-safe (mineral based) sunscreen options, that are likely to reduce the environmental impact of chemical damage compared to conventional options available.
Save Water And Energy
Tourism relies heavily on the continued availability of water and energy. Travellers can do their part by taking showers instead of baths, using the AC’s less or none at all, or even charging electronics (phones, tablets, laptops) once, instead of multiple times a day
Support Sustainable Accommodations/Operators/ Businesses
Choose accredited/certified, eco-friendly/green properties that utilize water/energy efficient technologies. Keywords to look out for: solar panels, efficient water heating and cooling systems, sustainably sourced building materials, less packaging, recycling, and working with the communities in which they are located Hire tour guides who are genuinely committed to safeguarding our resources Support businesses that are offering environmentally friendly alternatives
Ask Where Your (Sea)Food Comes From (FRER)
Sourcing seafood responsibly enables consumers to make correct choices that ensure the health of our oceans.
As a visitor, you can advance Belize’s cultural and natural conservation without much effort.
Did you know? Did you know?
Belize is one of the world’s top destinations for a wedding or honeymoon vacation.
The most popular Maya Temples to get married on are Altun Ha, Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, & Caracol.
Belize boasts over 450 exquisite small islands, locally known as Cayes These dot the turquoise waters off the length of the coast of Belize, as well as some atolls outside the Belize Barrier Reef Caye Caulker is the epitome of the "laid back island" lifestyle, where you can find shops, restaurants and small hotels The larger islands in the North such as Ambergris Caye, offer an eclectic choice of accommodations and cuisine to experience and immerse yourself in Belizean Culture As for exclusive getaways, there are smaller private islands along the Barrier Reef.

A WAY OF LIFE
By Stephanie HitchcockIt’s very easy to live a life in the future or past and to immediately feel stressed by the little things We have access to infinite information at the touch of a button and so we experience over stimulation on a daily basis How can we filter through all of this chaos and manage to focus on what is important to us?
Belize’s environment and its people have enabled me to be more mindful Being mindful is being conscious of the present moment And that! is the most important factor to ones own wellness
Nature plays a big role in a human’s well-being and Belize is nature at its purest Belize remains largely ‘untouched’. It has a population of only around 400,000 people and it’s home to lush, green rainforests and exquisite, blue coral reefs
Here are some other simple and fun things that you can practice each day The benefits you will receive are immediate
Morning wake up:
Start moving slowly and check how your body feels Do some stretches in the comfort of your bed
Notice your breath, breath in for a count of 4, hold it in for a count of 6 and release slowly for a count of 8 count
Do a negative thoughts & emotions dump, you can write it in your journal
When you brush your teeth and take a shower, enjoy every movement and contact with waterDrink warm water with a squeeze of lemon to aid with digestion
During day: Bed time:
Enjoy every moment you ’ re out and of exploring Belize, let nature heal you - Take 4 long breath before eating
Enjoy the local and organic foods of Belize
Take a lovely shower before getting into bed Visualize the water cleaning your mind and emotions
- Recall all the great things you experienced in the day and jot them down in your journal.

By Emilio Perrera - "Emilio Perera"Belize is a tropical marvel, populated by an eclectic people, of many cultural backgrounds This has made for an array of traditional lifestyles to co-exist in a society in transition of understanding the outside world But as we explore the complexity of the international community, we’ve gained appreciation of our own simplicity and insight into the value of locally made
In the past years, Belize has experienced a renaissance of its creative industry Small businesses accelerated the values and quality of buying local and commenced a production of high quality materials and ingredients
When travelling throughout Belize, you can feel the energies of the rainforest and of the sea; you can feel the energies of her people She can remind you of the healing powers of nature. Creatives have managed to use this inspiration and translate it into great initiatives, projects and products
Most crafts, materials, ingredients still come from indigenous communities across Belize, passing on a wealth of heirloom knowledge about the jungles.
In hopes to preserves this, some businesses have opted for more sustainable approaches to their means of production Entrepreneurs innovated and designed products using these traditional knowledge They saw the importance of keeping customs and traditions alive and adapted them to suite the modern times This inspired and gave rise to more businesses following the same
Where there’ s a will, there’ s a way
Given the limits in access to imported materials, creatives had to make do and get innovate. Collaborations boomed in the food, music and craft industries Skincare developers started working with farmers, designers with local artisans, artists and the creative content community all working in synergy for a quality final product.
Supporting locally made connects you to a considered journey It allows the stories of its people to live on, inspiring a new way of looking at how items are made and an insight into how far we can take it. This is only the beginning.

By Khadija Assales -"Kaj Expressions"The Lionfish Story & How One Business Got Started With Helping to Combat This Top Sea Predator
Lionfish is an invasive species that is rapidly destroying our reef. They have no known predators, and they reproduce at double the rate as Belize's native fish. Lionfish prey on the important reef cleaner fish, this leaving the reef neglected and covered in Algae.
Khadija Assales from Kaj Expressions, has always been fascinated by lion fish. It wasn't until back in 2012 when marine biologist Jen Chapman, gave her the unique idea of creating jewelry with lionfish that Kaj actualized her goal of comatting the predator. Kaj became the first person in Belize and the entire Caribbean to start making lionfish jewellery. Kaj has been passionate about it ever since Her work as evolved into beautiful, werable art with a cause. Save the reef one lionfish at a time.
