By Jennifer Kissel “The sky’s the limit” is a phrase I heard often as a child, but I took that advise quite literally. Growing up as the daughter of an Air Force pilot, I was constantly surrounded by adrenaline junkies with a hunger for fast jets and travel. I found the lifestyle addicting and I cannot remember a time when there was anything else I wanted to do. As a female there were challenges and roadblocks to achieving my goals, but I never let anything stop me and continued to work hard to prove my critics wrong. I eventually went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force for 8 years as a C-130 Hercules Aircraft Commander and Instructor Pilot and am now a private/charter pilot, traveling the world and loving life. The Air Force taught me self-discipline and the benefit of hardwork and dedication to a community achieving a mission together. The military helped shape the woman I am today and gave me the confidence to do things I never would have dreamed possible as a teenager. A great example of this confidence was working up the nerve to walk into The Beauty Within Management Office and meeting the wonderful Pamela Masucci for the first time. I had always been enamored by the fashion industry, but modeling was a profession that I thought would never be possible for me. Even when I was deployed to the Middle East, the other Airmen would be playing video games and I would secretly be reading my Vogue Magazine in the corner of the room. Despite my apprehension, I have never felt more welcomed than the day I walked into her office. As a woman already on her second career and over 30 years old, I thought my chance to model had long passed by, but she believed in me. Since that day I have had the opportunity to walk runways in the New York area, model clothing for boutique catalogues and wear more gorgeous wedding gowns than I ever dreamed possible. Modeling has brought me to a new level of self-confidence. My military and charter-pilot careers have brought me a certain level of professional confidence over the years but modeling and working for Pam has brought me a personal confidence that I never imagined. I walk taller (and being 6’ tall, that is difficult to do!) and prouder than ever before. I realize now that every person is beautiful in their own way and self-confidence adds greatly to that beauty. Finding that balance of internal beauty and external confidence is difficult to do but if you set goals for yourself and surround yourself with people that believe in you, then the sky truly is the limit. Whether your wings are pilot wings on you uniform or Victoria’s Secret Angel wings (or both), find what you love to do work every day to get one step closer to that dream.

“I believe that a girl should not do what she thinks she should do but should find out through experience what she wants to do”, Amelia Earhart. Never let anyone tell you that you can’t reach your goals, simply work hard to prove them wrong every day.

A woman’s most promising piece is her jewelry statement. To complete any look, jewelry can emphasize it. Whether it be earrings, necklace, bracelets, or rings. Jewelry can go with any outfit. In our small Ocean State, Rhode Island once held the title as the Jewelry Capital of the World in the 40’s and 50’s.

In Providence, Rhode Island, “The District” was the center of the nations costume jewelry biggest brand names.

Nehemiah Dodge known as the father of Rhode Island’s jewelry business, worked for his uncle Seril Dodge, also known as the first jeweler and watchmaker in Providence, Rhode Island. Afterwards he opened his own shop in 1794.

After years of following his uncle’s jewelry making method, he set out to create his own technique which produced a cheaper gold-plated sheet for making jewelry. Gold-plated jewelry is made out of a base metal with an extremely thin layer of gold coated on top.

From this one small business, many more were created. Most jewelry business owners were young apprentices to Dodge and formed their own companies.

By 1850, Providence had 57 jewelry manufacturers and by 1890 the Jewelry Capital had reached 200 companies making and distributing inexpensive gold and silver. One of the reasons Rhode Island became the leading state for jewelry making companies was due to its proximity to big cities such as New York and Boston. One established jewelry names Coro Jewelry ( Cohn & Rosenberger) was founded in NY by Emanuel Cohn & Carl Rosenberger in 1901/1902 & incorporated in 1913. A factory was established in Providence, RI in 1911. Coro was the largest costume jewelry manufacturer in the U.S. The majority of the pieces were the bestknown, higher-end brand that used more expensive materialssterling silver, vermeil and European crystals. The Jewelry Capital during the Great Depression After outgrowing their original location, Coro moved into their new factory in 1929. Just prior to the stock market crash which started the Great Depression. An era which stifled most industries. Yet the downturn seemed to inspire the costume jewelry trade. The other powerhouses of the industry were not to be out-done. Trifari pieces used an array of materials like rhinestones, coral, enamel, jade, and colored stones set in metal settings. They also made strides during the Depression. In fact, the costume jewelry trade as a whole fared much better during the depression than other businesses. As the demand for inexpensive adornment increased. Two designers rose to the occasion. Gene Verrecchia of Coro and Alfred Philippe of Trifari. Their visions moving the industry away from the flat, colorless, geometric art deco styles into a colorful three-dimensional composition. By the end of the decade into the 1940’s Rhode Island had become the Jewelry Capital of the world. Producing 80% of the costume jewelry made in America.

Be sure to visit the Providence Jewelry Museum at 1 Spectacle Street, Cranston, RI

The Historical Brooklyn Bridge The Brooklyn Bridge was designed by John Augustus Roebling, a German engineer who immigrated to the United States and had already constructed shorter suspension bridges in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City. It connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. ... The Brooklyn Bridge started construction in 1869 and was completed fourteen years later and cost $15 million (more than $320 million in today’s dollars). Built: 1869-1883 The Brooklyn Bridge is famous because there had never been a bridge like it before. When it was finished in 1883, it was the first steel-wire suspension bridge and the longest suspension bridge in the world. At least 20 people died during the bridge construction. John A. Roebling, who designed the bridge, was taking compass readings one afternoon when his foot was crushed between some pilings and a boat. After the U.S. took over construction in 1904, figures collected on the canal's site show that 5,609 workers died of diseases and accidents building this landmark. A majority of the men who died under U.S. management were natives to the area. You could walk 1.3 miles just one way, about 60 minutes. Just be wary of the bike lane, as it can get crowded on foot. Do not walk in the bike lane, that's a huge no-no. ... Some facts: Total length 6,016 ft, Height 272 ft, Width 85 ft, Longest span 1,595 ft, 6 lanes of roadway, no toll both ways. It was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the East River Bridge, but it was later dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge. The bridge has become an icon of NYC. It was designed a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1972. StyleUp Magazine was thrilled to select this NY landmark for its 8th issue cover photo shoot. Enjoy viewing several stunning fashion editorials that showcase this iconic monument.

Beauty Inspirations Fall /Winter 2019-20 Make-up Trends

Fall Runway Looks Models on a Marc Jacobs runway are usually done up in noticeable and avant-garde ways, so this season he shifted to clean, pared -down makeup was surprising but not unwelcome. Artful, glamorous, and just a little spooky – these are the best adjectives to describe the fall/winter 2019-2020 makeup runway trends. Gorgeously dewy skin, a touch of bronzer and bold lip colors. Extended winged eyeliner was a dramatic choice for Louis Vuitton and Saint Laurent.

Smoky Neutrals on the Eyes & Lips with Winged Eyeliner

Trends To See Everywhere From the runway to the street style, we are always trying to mimic the newest trends. The super strong brow was on its way out, while extra fluffy lashes were definitely in this fall/winter season. Very skilled artist show their techniques and versatile looks at the different fashion shows. Smokey eyes at Tom Ford, painted faces at Rick Owens and nomakeup looks on a bunch of other runways were some of the looks artist Diane Kendal created.

Bold is Beautiful

Voluminous Lashes “Heavy on the mascara” was the scene back stage in Paris with makeup artists not afraid to add the layers on thick/clumpy mascara. The heavy layers were applied to both top and bottom lashes without any attempt at separation.

Red Lips The timeless classic red lips since the earliest cosmetic cases date back to Ancient Sumer, circa 3,500 B.C. confirmed their runway relevance, with the red lips and black, smoky eyes thriving at the F/W 2020 shows.

Soft Eyes & Red Lips Red lips make a big statement and it is the centerpiece of your look. Love this very soft natural pink eye, blush, red lipstick and medium skin tone.

Sexy Smokey Eyes

There’s no such thing as being too dramatic with burgundy lipstick. StyleUp suggest really going for it with smoked-out hot rosy colored eye shadow & blush this winter.

A New Age of Fitness Mind, Body & Soul With the surge in the popularity of health and fitness, many entrepreneurs have found ways to capitalize on the growing trend, offering consumers new ways to enjoy getting fit. There are a plethora of new fitness classes designed to not only optimize someone’s fitness but also to provide the participant with social, mental and spiritual benefits. Have we arrived in a new age of fitness? Maybe we’ve entered a new chapter, one that seeks to transcend previous fitness trends. If you remember the testosterone of the 80’s bodybuilders, it’s largely become nostalgic, as people are more interested in pursuing happiness as part of their fitness goals now.

The Popularity of Health and Fitness As a population, we seem to have become more accepting of the idea that physical perfection is unattainable, yet the demand for a wide range of health and fitness options continues to expand. We’ve all somehow embraced and accepted a more holistic approach and see fitness as an integral part of becoming a more complete and healthy person. Scientific research continues to deepen our understanding of the human body and the interrelatedness of mind, body and spirit. Regular exercise can boost your mood if you have depression, and it’s especially useful for people with mild to moderate depression. Walking in nature is a perfect way to shift my mood and makes me feel healthier and happier. We have an ever-increasing number of personal choices to improve our fitness while aligning ourselves with what’s current in contemporary social and spiritual movements.

Yoga, Yoga Everywhere! Everywhere we look today we see how yoga has become popular in the cultural conversation. Yoga as a modern practice actually has a long history of Indian tradition and has been practiced for over 5,000 years! Yoga mirrors the osteopathic approach to health and fitness. They both focus on the body’s natural tendency towards health and self-healing and believe that “yoga and osteopathic medicine are based on the idea that we are not just a physical body with a mind. Our human existence consists of mind, body and spirit, which interact with one another in very complex ways.” The purpose of yoga is to create strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body. We see this ongoing acceptance that we are body, mind and spirit…everywhere! Yoga’s physical benefits: • Increased Flexibility • Increased Muscle Strength • Improved Respiration • Increase in Energy • Improved vitality

• •

Cardio and Circulatory Health Improved Athletic Performance

Regular yoga practice creates mental clarity and calmness. Why are people so comfortable with yoga, when they could get the same benefits from other workouts? Yoga has been practiced for centuries in some cultures and has become increasingly popular in Western culture for the last 50 years. It’s now receiving approval and recognition from the scientific community as well. Some believe that its mental benefits outperform any other source of fitness. A paradigm shift in this new age of fitness perhaps. And remember, yoga isn’t only for adults. The proven benefits for children are well-known.

Diet and Nutrition in the New Age The new age movement actually developed as a social movement drawing on ancient concepts while focusing on themes such as holism, naturalism, spirituality and metaphysics. Current dieting trends have evolved around the themes of holism and naturalism. Diets that are holistic are concerned about the impact our food choices have on the entire eco-system.

Diet’s Impact on Degenerative Diseases A vegan, or purely plant-based diet, contains plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Often vegans are also animal activists who believe that an animal’s life should be free of human interference. A marriage of personal practice and personal morality, very prevalent in the world today. We all know that high-quality (organic if possible) produce can increase our intake of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and fiber. Another benefit is the impressive health benefits they offer in the fight against chronic degenerative disease. There’s little doubt anymore that a healthy body is necessary for a healthy mind. And vice versa. An anti-inflammatory, vegetarian or vegan diet could lower the risk of: Type 2 diabetes, Cardiovascular disease, Hypertension, Strokes, Obesity and some cancers. More fruit and vegetables will even make a person happier! “Researchers found that people who switched from eating almost no fruit and vegetables in their daily diets to eating eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day experienced an increase in life satisfaction equivalent to what an unemployed person feels after finding a job”. Yay fruits and vegetables!

Sweat It Out in the New Age of Fitness ‘Sweat’ classes show a connection to metaphysics by creating a collective identity that’s socially and mentally beneficial to all participants. What do you think? We’ve all heard of Hot Yoga, right? How about Hot Pilates? The heated room intensifies any practice, and I found it to be a perfect accelerator for Pilates. The heat speeds up your heart rate, intensifies your workout and makes it more challenging. It also ensures that you warm your body faster”. Aside from the physical benefits, the mental connection you develop to your body during a heated class invites you to practice discipline and learn to adapt to uncomfortable situations. Many Victoria Secrets runway models did this prior to their big runway show. A must try!

Fitness Through the Generations Research confirms that each generation is more health conscious than the last. Millennials are redefining what ‘healthy’ looks like today. Current and future generations have access to a wealth of information, new communities and new choices, making it a wonderful time to find our own perfect individualized way to get fit. Hiking in nature seems to be on the rise. Breathing fresh air and watching sunsets is what our next generation of fitness gurus. We truly live in a time with unlimited options. We can choose to involve ourselves in practices that are ancient, or ones that are new and innovative. Or both. Perhaps a new age in fitness, one that will continue to evolve and gain momentum, is finally here.

HOT READS FOR

COLD NIGHTS

EDITORS FINAL THOUGHTS IT’S that time of year again: copious amounts of eggnog, fourth cousins rooting through your fridge, last-minute shopping and winter wonderland of snowstorms. The holidays seem to bring out the best and the worst, whether it’s weather, people, food, or gifts. Let’s hope the temperature dips soon we can all start wearing those fabulous sweaters, coats, hats & gloves! Tis the seasons! Our StyleUp 8th issue is filled with fashion, styled bridal inspirations, 25 BEST holiday gifts, 2020 NY trends, Rhode Island history, NYFW runway images, skiing destinations, travel guides to cosmopolitan cities and lots more….. Our cover star, Naira, is the kind of remarkable young women – and exceptional talent-we’d love to see on Broadway. In the meanwhile, catch her in GATE TO HEAVEN film March 2020. Taking this time to wish you a very joyous holiday season and a New Year filled with joy and happiness. May we all bond together in love and caring and keep the stars adjoined in the glow of a peaceful outcome for the problems faced in this world. The battle of life is difficult and peace hard to find, but each of us has the ability to take that moment to feel the joy of peace and love, if only in our hearts. I know that looking at the world as it is now it is hard to imagine. Keep the heart of LOVE always present and find the joy that is there within you. We must look forward to a future filled with BEAUTY and LOVE. God Bless You All.

Sincerely,

Pamela Masucci Pamela Masucci Editor-in-Chief
