Updates From Home Clubs During this month, Bishop Montgomery High School Key Club is making the final preparations for our upcoming board training session. In terms of service opportunities, we are not giving out any this month to focus more on our new board members. We plan to have the new board members come up with at least one service opportunity for May and June. We are also helping them lead our next general meeting in May. Leyna Tran
Carson has been busy getting ready for next term. In the past month, we have been finalizing the officers and we are currently advertising our home club at our school. During one of our school events, we will be able to talk more in-depth about key club, where students can learn what the club is all about. There, the board will be sharing the different experiences of the club from the previous years, like the different achievements accomplished, and the fun and memorable moments we had to encourage others to join. This can allow our club to see how many people are interested in joining for the next year and hopefully we will be able to catch the attention of more people joining. We also had members from our club that attended DCON.

Since last month, Narbonne Key Club has been continuing to work hard and complete volunteer hours. Over Spring Break, the official board made sure to further train and contact the new incoming board in order to make sure they were prepared to take on their duties. On Friday, March 26, a Jeopardy Game Night was planned as the last social to bond with the previous board members. Some categories of the game included: Art & Architecture, “K” Words, Chart Toppers, and more. The new board members will hold their first meeting this upcoming Friday, April 16, and began the transitions of guidance from the old board to the new board as an acting board until the end of the 2020 2021 school year.

This month, RUHS created 106 care kits to give to the homeless. In this project, we worked with PATH, a global nonprofit organization that works to create health equality in the world, who helped us distribute all the kits we made as a club. Our club organized a drive where our club members could either drop-off homemade care kits, which needed to have at least a few masks, bottled water, a pair of socks, baby wipes, and hand sanitizer, or bulk items, which we made a sign-up sheet for. We received 56 homemade care kits and were able to assemble 50 additional care kits from the bulk items members dropped off. Our initial goal was to obtain 60 care kites, but we ended up providing 106! The care kits were then dropped off on Tuesday, 4/13/21, at the PATH West LA location.

Service Project Spotlight With the homeless population in L.A. being especially vulnerable to the virus that has ravaged our nation for over a year, Redondo Union Key Club knew we had to do something to help. After frequent email communication with a volunteer with People Assisting the Homeless (PATH), multiple Board meetings spent creating an item signup sheet, and over 30 dedicated members offering to help make a change, our club made over one hundred care kits for the homeless. Each student has a different role to play in assembling the care kits, combining into one well-oiled volunteering machine. Some members offered to bring Puma socks, while others brought over 20 packs of baby wipes. In total, each care kit was filled with an abundance of helpful items that PATH told our club would be ideal: one pair of socks, three face masks, two water bottles, two packs of baby wipes, hand sanitizer, hygiene pads, first aid kits, and toothbrushes. Members could choose to either assemble full care kits or to purchase one item in bulk. Once we received all of the bulk items, the RUHS Key Club Board worked tirelessly to assemble all of the bulk items into 50 care kits, and combining that staggering number with the 56 kits that members assembled themselves, we were incredibly happy to stride up to PATH’s West L.A. drop-off location with over 100 care kits in tow. I didn’t see any member without a smile on their face after hearing of the success of our project, and we truly hope to continue helping the homeless in the future. In a time of great need, I am so thrilled to say that our Key Club volunteers rose to the occasion.

This term, I will be working hard to act as a liaison between your home clubs and the district and will be representing our division to the district.
