By JOANNA BELLAN The Bear Facts Two St. Joseph Catholic School students – juniors Benjamin Payne and Noah Greene – will lead Youth Legislature next year as governor and lieutenant governor.

BEN Payne was unopposed PAYNE in his race for governor, while Greene defeated another candidate for the No. 2 post. They will preside over the Junior youth Assembly next spring and the Youth Legislature next fall.

NOAH “This is a great and GREENE notable achievement for two outstanding students,” said Keith Barnes, principal of St. Joe. “To win the top two elected positions – one unopposed – says a lot about Ben’s and Noah’s KEITH leadership skills and BARNES their ability to get things done,” Mr. Barnes said.

“It also says a lot about the quality of students we have here at St. Joe.” The 2014 session of the Youth Legislature took place last month in downtown Jackson. The three-day conference is a mock legislature in which high school students craft, debate and vote on bills.

Payne and Greene led a 27-member delegation from St. Joe to the annual conference. Youth Legislature is a program for ninth through 12th grade students.

The Junior Youth Assembly, which will meet in the spring, is a similar program on a smaller scale and designed for sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth grade students. Like Youth Legislature, Junior Youth Assembly delegates craft, debate and vote on proposed legislation.

With drumsticks in hand, Buddy said, “I’m a little nervous, but I’m definitely ready.”

“Gifts of the Season,” the annual, wildly popular Christmas concert staged by the Fine Arts Department every year, took place at 7 p.m. on Dec. 5 and at 2 p.m. on Dec. 7.

The event began with a creative poem by Emily Miller titled “My Christmas Tree,” which greeted the audience with a feeling of Christmas.

Most of the songs were traditional Christmas songs, but with their own St. Joe touch. A great example would be “Silent Night.”

The singers gave a powerful representation arrangement of a longtime seasonal favorite.

In “Ding Dong Merrily on High,” Mr. Ronnie Russell, the band director and chairman of the Fine Arts Department, seemingly controlled the band and worked them like clockwork.

Every section played exactly when they were supposed to, which created a blend of beautiful sounds. The band and choir came together in “Carol of the Bells.”

7th grader advances to Madison County bee

Seventh grade student Neziah Igwebuike will advance to the upcoming Madison County Spelling Bee following her win at the annual St. Joe Bee on Monday, Dec. 1.

Igwebuike competed with 17 other seventh and eighth grade students. After many tough rounds of competition, Igwebuike emerged victorious and took the coveted spot in the county competition.

The final two competitors were Igwebuike and eighth grader Anna Rose Myrick. Seventh grader Caleb Fields took third place.

The Spelling Bee has been a significant event for students in grades 7 and 8 for many years at St. Joe. Even though it is a competition, students always have a great time.

Brother John: St. Joe’s very own Secret Santa

By ELLEN GWIN The Bear Facts Every year, Brother John goes out of his way to collect gifts for those in need.

Brother John is the 11th grade religion teacher and 12th grade government teacher. He has always been active in the community and is always trying to find ways to help others.

During Thanksgiving, Brother John fed many families with the help of the 7th-8th graders, in addition to several other active campus organizations. He asked everyone to donate just a little bit of money to help give those in

need a satisfying Thanksgiving meal.

His kindness does not stop there; he encourages the spirit of giving to others during Christmas time as well.

Brother John has been giving gifts to those in need for approximately 16 years.

“When I first came here, we would have two big tables filled with toys and educational things,” he said. “We would then bring in wrapping paper, and I would let my seniors wrap these toys and put the names on it.”

Making changes for 2015

I

t won’t be long before all of our social media accounts are flooded with “New Year, New Me” posts as we gear up for the start of the New Year.

But what do we really mean when we make cliché proclamations and New Year’s resolutions? We often stick to our goals for about a week or two, maybe a little bit longer if we’re truly determined. But soon after, the momentum of the new year wears off, and we’re back in the groove of everyday life. Our New Year’s resolutions are suddenly old news.

Although it may sound cliché, 2015 really is a new canvas, ready for you to mold it into whatever you want. And now I am handing you the paint brush to begin to create your own destiny for next year.

Instead of over stretching ourselves and creating a million resolutions, this year create one or two definite goals. This way instead of always trying to accomplish numerous goals, we

can focus on one or two goals and actually follow through with them.

For me, this is actually quite scary no matter how independent I may think I am. Yet, it is the perfect time to set resolutions for myself as a college student and a young adult. Not only is Dec. 31 the end of a great chapter in our lives, it also marks the beginning of another chapter.

Giving thanks with a grateful heart

T

his Christmas season we take the time out to remember the reason for the season.

At St. Joe, we get into the season by giving as well as receiving. Our school community is generous when it comes to giving. Our Christmas break revolves around family and service to others. The reason for the season is to prepare for the coming of Jesus.

Last Christmas season wasn’t a great one for me. It seemed as if everything went downhill. We lost three people from our family in one year, and it seemed as if things would not get better.

But I had to realize that everything happens for a reason, and that God has the final say in every difficult situation.

Through every difficult circumstance, I constantly try to remember the reason why God sent Jesus here in the first place.

I remember that Jesus was human, just like me.

During the holiday, I encourage people to think outside of the box and do something special for others.

Remember that we receive blessings by giving to others.

Celebrating Jesus’ birth As exams come to a end, we will turn our attention to one of the most important events on the Christian calendar: the celebration of the birth of Jesus.

This is a time of love, cheer, family and fellowship. It’s a time during which we can appreciate each other for whom we are.

It’s a time we can relax and enjoy each other’s company. And it’s a time for us to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas: Love.

We wish everyone a safe and joyous Christmas season. May you find peace, warmth and love with your family and friends this holiday season.

Looking ahead to a new year As the year 2015 quickly approaches, many of us talk about and plan changes we want to make in our lives.

But in order to become a better person it takes more than just talk. It takes commitment. The idea of a resolution allows us to procrastinate.

To our seniors who will graduate next spring: Use these next few weeks to prepare for the next chapter in your lives. We only have a few more weeks left at St. Joe. Let’s make the best of it.

This upcoming new year gives us an opportunity to mend any broken friendships or relationships. And it gives us a fresh start.

YOUTH LEG, from page 1 Youth Legislature, which took place Nov. 19-21, held sessions at the Marriott, the Old Capitol and the War Memorial building in downtown Jackson.

Students met there in legislative committees and then in mock House and Senate sessions.

If student legislators approved bills, they went to the Youth Legislature governor for his signature or veto.

The leadership for the program comes directly from the students, and each year’s session elects a full cabinet of officers that serve over the next year’s Youth Legislature.

The governor, the highest ranking official in the Youth Legislature, presents legislative proposals, signs or vetoes bills, makes appointments, holds press conferences, and acts as spokesman.

The lieutenant governor, the second highest position, presides over Senate meetings and all joint meetings of both Houses.

He also fulfills the duties of the governor in his absence.

Payne and Greene had to meet multiple prerequisites in order to run for office, including having at least one year of previous experience in Youth Legislature, the ability to speak in public, knowledge of parliamentary procedure, knowledge of present day issues and problems and a strong demeanor.

The competition began with words such as “canteen,” “slight” and “culture” – which proved to be quite simple for the experienced spellers.

As the rounds went on, the words became harder and the competition thinned out. Fields, Myrick and Igwebuike remained as the final three.

Igwebuike, coming off of a victory in the sixth grade spelling bee, was confident coming into the middle school bee. But her confidence did not stop her from studying hard.

“I studied with my younger sister over the break. She was a really big help.”

Both Payne and Greene have participated in Youth Legislature since the 10th grade; they have also participated on the Bruin Speech and Debate Team since ninth grade.

Zach Smith, a senior who has attended the Youth Leg since 10th grade, plans to use the experiences he has had at Youth Legislature to help him on his path to a career in politics.

“It’s useful to experience first hand how the legislative process is carried out in Mississippi and how proposed bills become laws, especially for people like me interested in politics as a career,” Smith said.

“I can tell how much I have improved and learned over the past three years,” he said.

“I also look forward to seeing everyone’s neat ties.”

Christmas is one of the best times of year. Many things contribute to making it so great, such as presents, Santa Claus, snow, and music. Christmas music is one of the best things to get people into the Christmas spirit.

Both seventh grader Layla Lewis’ and 10th grader Winford Ross’s favorite Christmas song is “Jingle Bells,” which was written by James Lord Pierpont in 1857.

They both love the fast pace of the song. Lewis loves how it makes her happy during Christmas time, and Ross loves how it gets him in the spirit of Christmas.

Griffin Hardeman, an eighthgrader, loves the Christmas song “Mary Did You Know?” written by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene and released in 1992.

“The song has to do with the

person that sacrificed his life for me and his lovely mother, it also shows all the sacrifices Mary went through to have Jesus,” said Hardeman.

“All I Want For Christmas is You” is by Mariah Carey and was released on her fourth album in 1994.

“I like the song ‘All I Want For Christmas is You’ because I believe Mariah Carey is a really good singer and performer,” said Drew Milner, a 12th grader here at St. Joseph.

Grayson Gulliory of the ninth grade and Luci Strong of the 11th both love the Christmas song “Jingle Bell Rock,” which is a popular Christmas song first released by Bobby Helms in 1958.

They both agree that it is the best Christmas song ever made.

“I love the beat of the song and the lyrics are so catchy,” said Gulliory.

Eighth grader Maggie Eidt’s favorite Christmas song is an original song called “Merry Christmas” by ninth graders Trey Frierson and Hayden Brice.

“I like this song because it’s original rap by the two funniest guys I know. It’s fun to watch them sing it, and it really gets me in the mood for Christmas time,” said Eidt.

Isabelle Robinson of the ninth grade has a deep love for the Christmas song “Believe” by Josh Groban.

It was released in 2004 on the soundtrack of “The Polar Express.”

“Well, ‘The Polar Express’ has been my favorite Christmas movie of all time since I was little and I love the whole soundtrack but if I had to choose one song to be my favorite it would be ‘Believe’

Next, the guitarists came in with several strong solos. One that particularly stood out was by senior band member, Warren Beebe.

Junior guitarist Zach Davis told me, “a lot of work has been put into these solos.” After the guitar solos, Buddy Paul Martin rocked the stage with his drum solo.

Junior Maddy Davis took center stage in “Little Drummer Boy.” With steady hands and a fierce expression, she kept a constant beat up until her

stunning drum solo.

After the intermission, where we received a drum performance, Jazz Band came out for two songs – “Fat Cat” and “Frosty the Snowman.” This is where we saw the importance of Jazz Band at St. Joe. Junior pianist Jack Hall stunned the audience with his piano solo Sunday afternoon, while junior pianist Christo

Hicks equally shocked the crowd.

Before the performance Sunday, Hicks said, “I’m really excited for my part in ‘Gifts of the Seasons.’”

For the song “Sleigh Ride” you always need someone to come in strong with the sleigh bells. Choir member John Henry Sullivan did just that, and the choir gave a performance that

lifted the spirits of the crowd.

One really unanticipated event was the St. Joe Fine Arts stage receiving more snow per inch this year than anywhere in Mississippi.

It showered snow-like material not just once, but twice during the performance.

Overall, “Gifts of the Seasons” was grand, as it is every year.

Female drummers create a new beat

She’s been invited to participate in the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and asked to play in Carols by Candlelight, the popular annual service at First Baptist Church of Jackson.

Maddy Davis is not your typical student at St. Joe. She likes golf, being involved in school activities, and taking part in Speech and Debate.

Yet, tapping away at her snare drum marks high on Maddy’s list of hobbies.

Maddy started playing snare in 6th grade and has been drumming ever since.

“Maddy originally discovered her talent in sixth grade,” said Stephanie Davis, mother of Maddy. “She tried out for the band at Olde Towne Middle School, and her natural aptitude was percussion. We got her a snare and the rest is history.”

Maddy came from Ridgeland High School, where she played

on the drumline of their band.

On the drumline is another female drummer named Jayla Davis. She is in the ninth grade at St. Joe and plays the highest bass drum. She attended Madison Middle before coming to St. Joe, and she loves playing on the drumline.

“I wanted to be part of percussion in the sixth grade, but Madison Middle had me wait until seventh,” Jayla said.

Maddy’s favorite drum beat to play in the stands at football games is “St. Al,” which is Saint Aloysius’s main drum beat as they walk into their own home games. Maddy and the drumline hope to perfect the drum beat and play it even better than St. Al themselves.

This year, Maddy is the drum captain. “The hardest thing I see in the position is trying to get everyone organized and teaching everyone the parts,” she said.

“Maddy’s previous band director was a skilled percussionist,” said Ronnie Russell, the St. Joe

band director. “His influence on her is demonstrated in her great reading ability and her great performance technique. Maddy also has a great deal of patience working with the drumline in the marching band. Her ability will take her as far as she wants to go.”

While at St. Joe, Maddy has performed at concerts and football games. She has done many different percussion parts, from suspended cymbal to bass drum.

“The hardest song I’ve had to play was my solo during ‘Little Drummer Boy’ at the 2013 Gifts of the Season,” Maddy said. She always keeps a cool head while playing tough beats and songs.

“Watching Maddy play gives me great joy,” Stephanie Davis said. “All parents enjoy seeing their children perform, and I am always amazed at how the band comes together and makes beautiful sound. Maddy is always able to get the crowd pumped up and make them part of the performance.”

It was founded in 1956. It’s a world class drum and bugle corps

based in Rockford, Illinois. It is a member of Drum Corps International.

Overall, Maddy enjoys drumming and being at St. Joe in gen-

eral, and will always have talent to pump up crowds at football games and concerts alike.

Along with a new coaching staff, new renovations are being made to the baseball facilities at D.M. Howie Field.

A new grandstand with chairbacks will be added, which will seat 300 people when completed. Counting standing room, an extra 200 people will be able to attend games, making the maximum capacity 500.

The foundation of the new grandstand was prepared in September, and the bleachers should be added sometime in January.

Later, chairbacks will be added in front of the press box/concession stand.

A new Iron Mike pitching machine was added into the baseball cages at the beginning of the school year.

“The machine will bring different elements with hitters, and it gives them a more realistic approach at the plate,” McCall said.

“It also helps cut down on strikeouts.”

Cubby holes have been added at the top of the home dugout for hanging bags and storing gloves and helmets. A new windscreen advertisement signage will go on the outfield fence.

The bullpen mounds are receiving much needed improvement in both the home and away bullpen. The back of the infield was smoothed out and made even with the grass. Whether minor or major, these baseball facility improvements will help the team compete with larger schools.

During the fall, baseball players not participating in a fall or

winter sport have been working out in the weight room and on the field. Players have been long tossing or hitting two to three times each week since August.

Since the middle of October, players have been working out in the weight room with tailored workouts specified for muscles that are most used in baseball.

Sophomore transfer, Matthew Hendley expressed great enthusiasm about the upcoming season.

“I believe the workouts that Coach has us doing are preparing us with the strength we need to keep playing hard and deep into the season and into the playoffs,” Hendley said.

Coach McCall stated his goal for the season, “I want this team to be one of the last two teams playing at Trustmark Park.”

Senior Joanna Bellan lands spot on All-Star Soccer

By JOSEPH KATOOL The Bear Facts Senior Joanna Bellan has been named to the Mississippi Association of Coaches 2014-2015 Baptist Rehab Services All-Star Soccer Game.

Bellan will play on the Girls South team, which will be coached by Matt Reid and Casey Stroo from Northeast Jones High School. Bellan will play along with 15 other soccer players from around Southern Mississippi.

The game will be played at the Clinton High School soccer field in Clinton on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 12:30 p.m.. The Girls South team will play against the Girls North team.

The game is played annually in February for selected soccer players who are seniors graduating with his or her regular class. Bellan was selected by her Coach, Dwayne Demmin, and a committee of coaches from around the state.

Each coach of every team

sends in the names of two players from their team to be looked at by the committee. The committee then chooses the best players to field a 16-member team.

When Bellan heard the news that she was selected to play in the game, she felt honored and excited. Bellan is one of three girls selected from Madison County for the all-star game.

Bellan has played with the St. Joe girls soccer team since seventh grade. She has also played select soccer for eight years.

Bellan has had many memorable moments while playing soccer for St. Joe. “My favorite memory is beating St. Andrew’s a couple of years ago at home since they are our rivals and it was a very close game,” she said.

“Another favorite memory is riding back from the game against Our Lady Academy in the playoffs. Even though we lost, we played really well and the bus ride back was a lot of fun.”

This is Dwayne Demmin’s first

year coaching the St. Joe girls team, as he also maintains his longtime duties of coaching the St. Joe boys team. Bellan thinks the girls team will do well this year.

“I think we will be able to make it pretty far this year and deep into the playoffs,” she said.

It is a very big honor to play in this all-star game, as many great soccer players from Mississippi have participated in this game. Bellan is the second player to come from St. Joe and play in this game in the past two years, as Olivia Crabtree played in the 2013- 2014 all-star game.

Much is at stake for Bellan in this all-star game. It can help her make a name for herself in the soccer world and help St. Joe excel in being a perennial powerhouse in girls soccer.

This game will also be the last high school soccer game. Although the game will not show up in the record books, it will be a lasting memory for Bellan.

Senior girls lead Bruin cheer squad

Once every school year, about 30 girls try out for cheerleading, but few lead it. This year the cheerleaders have three senior captains: Lindsey Funderburg, Sammie Dupont, and Mary Kathryn Weatley.

Lindsey Funderburg has been a cheerleader since she was in second grade. She has been a cheerleader at St. Joe since seventh grade. “I’ve cheered for so long, so I wanted to continue through high school,” said Funderburg. “I was new to the class in seventh grade, and it was a good way to meet new people."

Funderburg has learned a lot about what it means to be a good teammate. She has also learned

responsibility. Funderburg believes that each role in stunting is very important. She believes that as long as each person fulfills their role, nothing bad will happen. "Learning new stunts can be intimidating, but being aware of your surroundings and having extra help is good insurance," said Funderburg.

Sammie Dupont is a senior captain. She has been a St. Joe cheerleader since she was in ninth grade. While she was in middle school, she cheered at Premier Tumble Cheer. “I’ve learned that the cheerleaders play a major part in the school community, and being a cheerleader is very rewarding, because you get to see the school come together during pep rallies and football games,” said Dupont. When Sammie first

started cheer in ninth grade, the idea of stunts petrified her, because she had never been a flyer.

“Now that I have been a cheerleader for three years with stunting under my belt, I love it, and it's probably one of my favorite aspects of cheerleading,” said Dupont.

Mary Kathryn Wheatley is another senior captain. Wheatley was a ballerina starting at age 3, which then lead to cheerleading.

“I decided to join, because I love cheering, supporting the school, and being involved,” said Wheatley. “Stunts are exciting and fun!" Wheatley has learned leadership skills while being part of getting the school excited.

Coach Daniel Gilbert will help with infielders and hitting and Coach Mike Swindle will lead the Middle School team. McCall himself will work with catchers along with his head coach duties.

From last year’s season, St. Joe only lost two seniors, Charlie LeDoux and Pace McDonald.

A total of seventeen players will return from last year’s District

6-2A champion team, including four seniors: Thomas Benson, Jacob Caskey, DaJour Evans, and Nick Sims. St. Joe finished the 2014 season with fifteen wins and eleven losses, with an undefeated district record at 8-0.

St. Joe advanced to the playoffs but lost in the first round to Enterprise-Clarke, where the Bruins dropped the first two games in a best two-out-of-three series.
