Editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, After forcing readers to endure a three page editorial last week looking at the Big-Enders and Little Enders in local politics this week’s15th editorial Vol 16 September 2017 is short and to the point.

There has been much recent discussion around the Rural Land Strategy Proposal. The Strategy has taken five years to date with committees, consultation and reports all leading up to the NSW Planning Minister, Anthony Roberts, signing off on it saying that in his opinion the Strategy, as he read it, met HIS approval and he was happy to see it returned to the community and councillors for final submissions, a report and then endorsement.

Submissions have closed and that report with all the submissions is due to be completed by 7 August 2018 with the issue further discussed and considered at the council meeting on 28th August.

In the batch of recent submissions are letters from two State Agencies. The Office of Environment and Health and Department of Fisheries. Both have reiterated their concerns around the strategy in very clear terms and both offer informed expert opinion that the Council appears to be dismissing.

And Why would Council be so bold?

On July 18th the Mayor, Liz Innes, was interviewed by Simon Lauder of ABC South East and she revealed through her answers that the Rural Land Strategy Proposal as it stands is pretty much a done deal.

Simon, in his questioning, offered to the Mayor that a number of state agencies are still putting forward their concerns in writing.

He was then advised by the Mayor “the state government has already signed off on it so all of these" "We have heard all those concerns before … there is nothing new, we have all heard them. …. if the majority of councillors agree it will be done" When asked “are you satisfied that these concerns have been addressed"?

“Absolutely – it is appropriate that government agencies at times bring up their concerns – we have addressed those concerns and the Minister has agreed with us.”

So there you have it …. There is nothing new that they haven’t addressed from land clearing to waterway pollution, from having cows in wetlands to the risk of bushfire with new properties.

It is expected that the councillors will have to wade through 500+ submissions including the submissions from the OEH and DPI that the Mayor dismisses as rehashed.

Listening to the Mayor's interview you might believe that it is all done and dusted and if those agencies aren’t happy they should take it to the Minister who apparently has signed off on it.

That then leaves the final vote to the councillors and it is already predicted to be unanimous decision in support of the Strategy simply because a vote against the strategy is a vote against the council planning staff and also a vote against the NSW Planning Minister and that would cause a ruffle in relations between Council and the State Government who, after all, are actually the ones in charge and calling all the Beagle Editor…….. David Harding Tertiary Music Award : Rotary funds music award in honour of local Rotarian David Harding.

Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 April December 7th, 2017 48 27thMusic 2018 StVol Cecilia Youth Scholarships provide assistance to young musicians in the South Coast, and Rotary Batemans Bay will make an annual grant of $1,000 to the Eurobodalla St Cecilia Music Scholarships.

The annual grant will provide a scholarship of $1000 to a St Cecilia participant proceeding to tertiary music studies. The Scholarship will be known as the David Harding Tertiary Music Award in honour of David's many years of leadership as President of the St Cecilia Music Scholarships and his work as a Rotarian in support of youth.

Rotary allows ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things. And this has certainly been the case with their generous award of the annual Dave Harding Tertiary Music Award.

The first David Harding Award has been awarded to Chloe Watts, a past participant in the annual St Cecilia Music Scholarship program.

Chloe completed her HSC at St Peters College in 2016 and this year commenced a Bachelor of Music Degree at the Sydney Conservatorium.

In addition to the David Harding Tertiary Music Award, this year the St Cecilia Scholarship Committee granted a scholarship of $1,000 to Johanna Eltherington, who was the winner of the Senior Contemporary category in 2017. Johanna studied at Carroll College and has commenced a Bachelor of Music degree at the Australian Institute of Music in Sydney. Johanna is aiming for a career in Musical Theatre and film.

Last straw for single-use plastics It’s Plastic Free July and with major supermarkets removing single-use shopping bags from their Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 checkouts, it’s a good time for the community to reflect on how they can avoid other disposable plastics.

The big four single-use items that produce the most plastic waste are bags, straws, disposable cups and water bottles – and they are also among the easiest to avoid.

Council’s Waste Minimisation Officer Adam Patyus said replacing single-use shopping and produce bags with reusable ones was a “no-brainer”, with numerous outlets now supplying or selling a variety of reusable bags.

However he said single-use plastic bags were just one of the top four items to avoid.

“Many cafes offer discounts for customers who bring their own cup or mug so initial upfront costs are repaid in no time,” Mr Patyus said.

“If you have to use a disposable coffee cup, please remember that it can be recycled through placing it in a yellow-lidded bin once you’re done.”

The virtues of choosing tap or tank water over purchased bottled water are well documented, too.

“Bottled water is generally very expensive with most of the cost being for the packaging and branding and not the contents,” he said.

“Get yourself a reusable drink bottle and next time you’re out and about fill up at one of Council’s refill stations, which are dog-friendly too.”

Mr Patyus said the trick was to remember to keep reusable items handy when away from home.

“You can keep a stash in your car, your handbag or sports bag for those unplanned spur of the moment trips to shops or impulse buys,” he said.

“By avoiding these single-use plastic items, you’ll be helping to keep a considerable amount of plastic out of landfill and the environment.”

Talking History’ Morning Tea Tuesday 31st July at 10.30am at Narooma Library

It’s FREE – the regular ‘Talking History’ Morning Tea. And, to coincide with the launch of the August 2018 issue of ‘Recollections’, on this occasion it’s at Narooma Library on Tuesday 31st July starting at 10.30am.

This tie around the organisers have a couple of extremely interesting locals who’ll be ‘talking history’ – Harry Bate from Tilba who has recently been involved with the remarkable restoration of the historic Corunna Cemetery, just south of Narooma (you’ll discover there is an article on this in the August issue of ‘Recollections’), and Dr Philip Creagh from Narooma who is just completing a mammoth book on a cohort of soldiers from around NSW who were killed in World War I. If you plan to attend, please let the Narooma Library know on 4476 1164 so that they will have a seat and some morning tea waiting for you.

And, of course, you’ll be able to collect the extra large, extra informative August 2018 issue of ‘Recollections’, which will be ‘hot off the press’, at this morning tea.

Returning for its 5th year, the rally is a round of the NSW Clubman Rally Series, the NSW Development Rally Series, the NSW Hyundai Rally Series and the ACT Regional Rally Series. With a bumper field of 60 cars, the event showcases the best rally drivers from the east coast of Australia in a wide variety of vehicles, including the ever popular classic rally cars like Ford Escorts and Datsun 1600’s.

Quota is coming to Moruya July 25th The President and members of the Quota Club of Batemans Bay are looking for new members and to that end will be hosting a morning coffee and cake at Les Gourmandises in Moruya.

We hope to welcome along interested people who have some time on their hands to help in the local community. We would like to shout each of you a coffee and cake at the lovely Les Gourmandises patisserie in Moruya.

Please find time to come along so that we can let you know about the great work that Quota is doing in the local community. We already help each of the schools in Moruya and have given funds to assist the Moruya Hospital. Our latest donation was to the South East Women and Childrens Service and we will be helping with their winter appeal for food and household items.

The Quota club has been working in the Eurobodalla Shire for over 40 years and we would like to continue to help those people in the local community who are disadvantaged.

So come along and meet us and have a delicious morning tea on us - we will be there from 10.30am on Wednesday 25th July

Heritage grants available for Eurobodalla property owners Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Owners of heritage properties in 28 April December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 2018

Eurobodalla have two weeks left to apply for grants to help them restore their historical homes and bespoke buildings.

Eurobodalla Council has grants up to $5,000 available for projects that will enhance individual places, buildings and historic streetscapes and promote the appreciation of Eurobodalla’s history.

Applications close on Friday 3 August 2018 at 2pm. Successful applicants will need to contribute one dollar for every dollar provided by the grant, and the restoration work must be completed before May 2019.

Established by Eurobodalla Council with a funding contribution from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, Local Heritage Places Grants are offered every year to help local property owners preserve the region’s rich and remarkable heritage.

Shelby Grace: a Star in the making Many will recognise 16 year old Shelby Grace from her appearances at the

Busking Championships where in 2017 she hosted the competitors at the Narooma Plaza and then in 2018 in her capacity as a judge.

The selection as a judge at a National qualifying event was one that Shelby took seriously. Fortunately for the contestants she was well qualified with both a swag of experience under her belt and also being a graduate of the Academy of Country Music, Tamworth Shelby told The Beagle " The Academy of Country Music was an amazing experience where I was privileged to co write songs, learn about the music industry and perform with some huge stars including, Lynn Bowtell, Jayne Denham, Travis Collins, Roger Corbett and Alan Caswel. The course ran for eights days and ended with a professional graduation concert at the Moonshiners Bar, Family Hotel, Tamworth."

Inspired by her American roots, Shelby Grace is fast becoming a versatile and accomplished singer and guitarist.

Hailing from the NSW Snowy Mountains, Shelby is currently a Yr 11 student at Saint Mary MacKillop College in the ACT Awarded Peoples’ Choice runner up in the 2017 Australian National Busking Championships and overall runner up at the 2016 Australian National Busking Championships Shelby's recent performances have included the Tamworth Country Music Festival, The Peak Festival, Cobargo Folk Festival, Snowy Mountains Country Music Muster and Canberra's Floriade.

The first weekend in November will see Shelby once again contesting the Australian National Busking Championships in Cooma hoping to take out the grand prize.

U3A Batemans Bay – Serving the Eurobodalla U3A Batemans Bay has been providing courses and social activities for over 50s in the Eurobodalla Shire for over 20 years we currently have more than 600 members. As an organisation we are unique in that every person involved, Vol 16and September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 including the committee and the tutors, is a volunteer. Our tutors are members who offer their time, knowledge and interests to others, and this helps us keep the cost of participating extremely low. The annual membership fee (currently $40), entitles you to participate in as many different courses as you wish.

Amongst our many offerings are four different levels of French ranging from Absolute Beginners to a French Book Club, and two different levels of Italian. There are six exercise classes,10 Book Groups, seven wine appreciation groups, and a multitude of other activities. We also have an active Saturday Talks program where invited guests offer presentations on various topics. Courses are held in Batemans Bay, Malua Bay, Tomakin, Broulee and Moruya as well as in tutor’s homes throughout the shire.

Semester 2 2018 begins on Monday 23 July. There are over 60 different activities being offered at a variety of venues throughout the shire. Activities are classified under the broad headings of History and Culture, Science, Literary Activities, Languages, Arts and Crafts, Recreational Activities, Physical Activities and General Interest.

New Term 3 courses include Post-Truth Society, a special course about news via the internet. In its early days, the internet promised access to vast resources of information knowledge and easy communications with other people all around the world. It was going to ensure people were better informed and more tolerant of others. Instead it has become swamped with ‘alternative facts’, fake news, propaganda and misinformation. Are people too willing to believe what they want to be true, despite evidence to the contrary? Join Sharon Beder, Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Arts, University of Wollongong, to explore this fascinating topic.

Israel/Palestine from Biblical times to the Present Day. This course provides a background into one of the longest running and most intractable problems facing the contemporary world. Israel/Palestine occupies a tiny piece of territory, but few places on earth have greater strategic significance. The course highlights the historical, religious and ideological contributors to the present and in light of them, invites participants to imagine a future that is worth investing in.

In Term 4, beginning on 15 October we offer new courses The Prism of the Sixties with Dr Merv Bendle, Giovinezza, an Italian Course about youth with Dr Jennifer Brewster, and The Wars of The Roses with Tudor Historian Ruth Henderson.

Popular returning courses in Term 4 are International Economics, (Dr Andrew Elek), An Introduction to Geology, (Stewart Needham), Kaleidoscope Science Forum, (Dr Jane Elek), Living Sustainably in the Eurobodalla, (Kathryn Maxwell) and Sudoku, (Dr Susan Mackenzie).

APPOINTMENT. – Nurse Polly Emmott, oldest daughter of Mr. Thomas Emmott, erstwhile of Moruya, but now of Sydney, has been appointed Matron of the Bomaderry Red Cross Convalescent Home. Nurse Emmott has for some time been under matron of the Randwick Military Hospital.

NAROOMA. OUR CORRESPONDENT WRITES: - A very painful accident occurred here on Friday last to an infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Mercer of Narooma. The child was playing in the kitchen and on stepping back sat down into a pan of boiling water and but for the timely rescue by the mother who happened to be near, probably fatal results might have occurred.

HINDENBURG has thrown the seven and gone to get his reward. What a pity he was not accompanied by the Kaiser.

CLOTHING WANTED. – Mrs. John Emmott is in receipt of a number of applications from Sydney from mothers of families for children’s left off garments or adults clothing which can be remade for the youngsters, and is now appealing for parcels to be sent to her for distribution. Owing to the high of living even wage earners have a struggle to properly clothe their children, so our charitable citizens will be doing a genuine act of kindness by forwarding articles they have to Mrs Emmott.

WEDDING. – HOGAN – HEFFERNAN One of the prettiest and most interesting weddings ever witnessed in this district was solemnised in the Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m., the contracting parties being Mr. Israel Linus Hogan, second youngest son of Mr. Edward Hogan, of Sydney, and Miss Irene, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Heffernan of Yarragee, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the district. The Rev. Father Hogan (brother of the bridegroom), assisted by the Rev. Father McCormack, performed the ceremony.

A most sumptuous breakfast was provided in the large Assembly Room of the Royal Hotel under the very capable supervision of the land lady, Mrs. R. N. Carden, comprising the choicest ham, poultry, hot seasonable vegetables and all the dainty little etceteras inseparable from an up-to-date banquet. Mr. and Mrs. Hogan left per special motor for the South where the honeymoon was spent, the bride travelling in a navy costume with a smart hat of navy panne velvet.

FROM THE FRONT. – Mrs. C. Thorpe, of Nelligen, received the following from her son written at Portsmouth on 23rd May last :I received two of your letters before I left my Company. I am now in England in hospital and have been in hospital since 12th May in the 1st Australian General in France for a few days then sent over to England. I was first sent to hospital with influenza but it turned out to be trench fever, and it is a rotten thing to have. The doctor won’t let me out of bed yet, but I feel alright now, but he reckons not. This place will do me better than France. Since the last push in France we have had a pretty rough time of it, and for a while not much to eat.

They could never find us to get the rations up. When we arrived down south on the Somme no one knew where the Germans were, and we were two days looking for him, so you can guess what sort of time we had, and we met him on Easter Saturday, which was the hottest day of the lot. He shelled from daylight in the morning till after dinner. They marched his men in broad daylight and not one of our guns was knocked out. It was a bit exciting for a while but it might not have been for him. I am in hospital in Portsmouth in the south of England, and it is nearly all Australians, the 5th Southern General Hospital.

destroying our oceans and political chaos is breaking out in America, the UK, the EU and elsewhere, it would be understandable if we all went into an emotional decline. Add to that an American president accused of ‘treason’ by a former chief of his country’s Central Intelligence Agency; India disgracing itself with religious extremism; and the Chinese government destroying the remaining vestiges of its citizens’ freedom of thought, expression and assembly and the decline could become terminal.

Ruination seems just around the corner.

But then, suddenly in Thailand a soccer team of bright young boys gets impossibly stranded in the depths of a cave and the whole tenor of our lives changes.

What a weird mob we are. And not just us Aussies for whom John O’Grady’s wonderful book of that name dubbed

us, but the entire species. When word filtered out that the kids had disappeared in that wet, black labyrinth, slowly the world roused itself. The good angels of our collective soul took off on a flight of mercy that somehow transcended all that dreadful stuff that had threatened our faith in humanity.

It was quite extraordinary the way the plight of the innocents grabbed us; and men with arcane skills – people whose hobby was cave-diving for goodness sake – came forward. Men we’d never heard of but who exhibited the highest order of organising ability, medical expertise and raw courage that might otherwise never have been recognised.

Blokes like Dr Richard ‘Harry’ Harris and Perth Vet, Craig Challen joined a truly international rescue team. British, American, Japanese, Chinese, and especially the Thai people all worked around the clock to bring them out.

And when we saw the boys’ fresh faces on that televised conference talking about their fearful experience, it made our hearts glow.

Suddenly, all that political posturing in Helsinki and Washington took on a new perspective. Dopey Donald’s fantabulous ‘explanation’ for his apparent (and real) preference for Vladimir Putin over his own intelligence chiefs on Russia’s support for his election seemed pathetic. In fact, it so offended reality that the laws of nature rebelled and briefly dimmed the lights in the White House briefing room.

Really, who cares?

Oh sure, his eponymous ‘base’ will still support him. If Vlad the Impaler himself had lent a hand to keep Hillary out of the Oval Office, that was fine by them.

In the UK, Theresa May staggered through the next ridiculous phase of removing her little island from the EU’s clutches. Here at home Turnbull and Shorten ramped up their shadow-play, pretending that they were really something more than two faces of the same coin. The guilty Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide was tapped on the wrist by the courts since until his appearance he’d been of such good character. And on TV we all pretended that Masterchef was a ‘reality’ show where merit triumphed and the producers had barely a hand in who won the big prize.

Try focusing on the more shallow sections of the system at this time of the year.

The four-ways and snake flat have produced a few sizable whiting using fresh baits like yabbies and squirt worms.

Bream are being caught around the rock wall near Preddy’s Wharf in Moruya. FG blades and soft plastics like Gulp nemesis are working well. Baits like beach worms, yabbies and mullet fillets are also working great.

Luderick have been schooling around the entrance of the weir and also the bridge pylons in Moruya.

Nippers and green weed will put you in with a good chance of landing a few.

Rocks and Beaches The salmon are still hanging around in good numbers all up and down the coast. Moruya break wall, Pedro Point and Bingi have all produced good fish on both pilchards and Arma metals.

Plenty of crayfish are still coming in off the rocks. Both diving and using our cray pots has been very productive.

The drummer fishing off the rocks at South Heads, Bingi and Potato Point has been great! Reports of many sizable fish landed using peeled prawns, crabs and Cunji for bait. Groper and bream are also being caught in the same areas.

Offshore Some nice snapper are being caught just off Tuross. Floating pillie cubes down a good trail has worked a treat.

The reefs off Moruya are fishing well for snapper and big mowies using Instinct performance rigs with Pillies and California squid. Pigfish, barracoota and a few sharks are also being caught around the reefs.

Human Flow Sunday 29 July at Narooma Kinema Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact.

Featured Artist at The Gallery, Mogo: Carleta Delac painter15th Carleta VolMoruya 16 September 2017Delac, is the new featured artist at The Gallery in Mogo until 30 July.

Carleta who was born and spent much of her early years in Papua New Guinea, pursued a long and varied career in nursing—including twenty-six years at Moruya Hospital—before being confronted with retirement.

She says, “After 46 years of service, I was at a bit of a loss about what to do with myself, so I tried the University of the Third Age (U3A) and eventually joined an acrylic painting class”. Carleta hasn’t looked back since making that decision less than three years ago.

Loving both colour and fun, Carleta celebrates both in many of her artworks.

“Flowers in the Pond”, one of Carleta's first paintings, can be seen in the featured artist show—a semi-abstract explosion of tangerine coloured blossoms that seem to have fallen and settled on a swirling surface of blues and yellows. Unconstrained by tradition, Carleta practises an unusual method of painting that she describes as her ‘credit card’ pictures. She uses a credit card to apply and spread colours for the background and different, cut up pieces to shape the more detailed focus of the artwork.

Her subjects range from birds to trees to flowers of all sorts and she has no hesitation in placing people in her paintings.

Her landscape painting “Attenborough’s Daisies”, was developed from a scene on one of David Attenborough’s nature documentaries and depicts large yellow and orange daisies dominating the front of the picture while compositionally framing a middle ground of green and yellow vegetation fading into a background of dark green hills and blue sky—all carefully shaped with a plastic card.

But otherwise, Carleta goes out with her camera and photographs local scenes that interest her and develops them into artworks back in the studio.

Carleta is especially proud of her portraits—also shaped with the card.

At The Gallery, there is a display of her studies that capture not only the likeness but also the personality of the subject. She says, “It all started when I took a photograph of a friend and turned it into a portrait. This led to other people bringing me photographs and asking for a painting”.

Carleta usually requests more information about the subject and will often incorporate parts of their lives and interests into the portrait, such as the “Tiger” motto of a Commander’s squadron or the coloured silks of a horse racing identity.

The Gallery is a co-operative venture of the Creative Arts Batemans Bay Society Incorporated (CABBI), a society open to local arts and crafts practitioners. People interested in finding out more about CABBI should drop in to The Gallery, Mogo or phone 02 4474 2243.

Ethereal blendings of people and chooks Rosedale photographer Helen Okey adds the extra to ordinary. Her ethereal, transformative portraits of people and chooks feature in an exhibition at the Batemans Bay library which is running from 2-21 July. A flick through her portfolio of portraits at the exhibition shows suburban mums metamorphosing into Grace Kellys and backyard chooks into exotic , almost peacock like, creations.

Marian is inspired by her connection to nature and earth. Exploring her love of what she sees in many different directions, Marian’s work covers a variety of mediums, from paint, wax and textiles to stich and paper.

And the exhibition also features some exquisite, almost celestial, dancer portraits. A childhood dominated by the dressup box and a career in clothing and fashion design before studying photography have given Helen her classic and often quirky portraiture style. She likes photo shoots to be fun and it shows.

Taking to painting later in life, he passionately explores his muses and the many seeming coincidences he has experienced over time. He has developed his own style and career highlights include his work being selected by judge Margaret Olley to hang with finalists in the prestigious Mosman Art Prize.
