Editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, Local politics is always interesting when you have players like our own council to observe. Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 April December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 2018
This weeks sees them back in the limelight starting with the Mayor giving her councillors a bit of a serve for publicly voicing an opinion during a Council meeting that the funding for libraries provided by the NSW Liberal Government was “an absolute disgrace”. In a follow up media release the Mayor “expressed her grave disappointment that accusations of library funding cuts made at Tuesday’s Council have potentially jeopardised the working relationship Council enjoys with Bega MP Andrew Constance. “I’m actually quite angry about the manner in which this was raised. We have built a fantastic working relationship with Andrew and we’ve achieved a great deal together for the benefit of this community. NSW government funds are flowing to this shire faster than ever before and this is thanks to Minister Constance’s influence and his commitment to our region. “We’re well within our rights to ask questions about budget matters, particularly when it looks like it might impact our shire, but the way we go about asking those questions has significance and this is a timely and serious reminder for all councillors.” Now we look at today’s media where we read that Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes is calling on NAB to reconsider the decision to close its Narooma branch. “It’s disappointing that a valued national institution such as NAB isn’t supporting local communities. “Our Council has $15 million of investments with NAB, and we do our day-to-day banking with them. We want to do business with those who support our local community. We hope they’ll reconsider the decision.” Of interest was to read one headline “Shire plays loyalty card’ and to read the editorial “in a thinly veiled warning Mayor Liz Innes has reminded the bank of its $15 million relationship…” Now that is BIG on two counts. Firstly revealing the $15m has breached Council’s Commercial in Confidence obligations revealing to other banks the extent of their local banking details. That is pretty naughty and no doubt the councillors and the Director of Finance will have a bit of a word to the Mayor. The second BIG one in this is the revelation that the Mayor wasn’t listening to the response given to Councillor Pat McGinlay last week that very clearly stated that TCORP, who hold Council’s purse strings are the ones in control of any decision Council makes in regards to its finances and where it banks and as such the Mayor’s “Thinly veiled warning” is as toothless as Council is when it was also reiterated by the Director of Finance that Council “was always beholden to the State Government” This too came to the surface this week when, put to task over the way she handled the well and truly defeated Mayoral Minute around Council co-contributing $10,000 with a private consortium to draft a new report looking at Wharf Road inundation the Mayor, via a Facebook posting acquiesced and admitted that it was, as she had been advised by her fellow Councillors, a State issue. In the meantime we have heard that Councillor Brown has been declared innocent of bringing the good name of Eurobodalla Council into disrepute. Until next Lei Beagle Editor…….. Reading—history Shire-wide news extracts from the Moruya Examiner of 6 July 1918, provided by the Moruya & District Historical Society: BIG FISH HAUL. – On Monday last Mr. Dennis netted in one haul from Coila Lake the phenomenal weight of 1070 lbs of Jew Vol 16 September 15th 2017 fish, weighing to 2017 15 lbs. This big catch was at once brought into the Freezing Works in Moruya, and being of the value of 28 April December 7th, Vol some 48 27th 2018 4d per lb to the fisherman, Mr. Dennis made a very good day’s wages. JERVIS BAY RAILWAY. – The Shoalhaven “News” states: That with the certain developments at Tuggeranong, the selected site for the Commonwealth arsenal in the Federal Capital area, a big impetus will be given to the Yass-Canberra to Jervis Bay railway. BALL. – The Grand United Order of Oddfellow’s ball, held on Friday night, was a very successful and enjoyable function. There was a was a very fair attendance, and with the best of music by our champion musicians, Miss Kurz and Mr. J. Buckley, and a courteous Master of Ceremonies in the person of Mr. J. Graham. Brothers George Mercer and the Secretary, Leo Walker, had charge of the outer door, and Brother H. W. Luck officiated as ticket taker at the inner door. CINDERELLA DANCE. – In our last issue we omitted to mention that the Poultry Club held a very nice Cinderella dance on the night of their annual show. The attendance was fair, considering the severity of the cold at this season of the year, and one and all had a good time. Mr. J. R. Milne, as usual, ably filled the position of M.C., and the music being supplied by Miss Kurz and Mr. Buckley, there was nothing wanting that could contribute to the enjoyment of the devotees of Terpsichore. THE SHIRE COUNCILLORS have decided to repair the wash away near the Company’s Store and Wharf at an estimated cost of £20; the Illawarra Co. and Sir Allen Taylor to bear an equal share of the cost.THE local steamer from Sydney, came whistling up the Moruya River at 3.30 yesterday morning. We can imagine the loveable things said by the local agent as he turned out of his warm nest at Gundary into the frosty night. NERRIGUNDAH. – (From our Correspondent.)The prospectus of the battery being established here by a local syndicate has already made a stir. Several parties are out prospecting and Jessop Bros. are on good stone in their claim.A Progress Association has been formed. The roads around the village have been put in good order, new gates erected on the northern section, and dangerous places filled in on the southern road. Our energetic townsman, Mr. W. Wallace, has removed from North’s Creek and purchased a more commodious residence in the centre of the township, where he will have a better opportunity of looking after the public’s interest. A tennis club has been formed and the old court repaired, and a good number of members attend regular practice. Some of our neighbouring clubs may soon expect to receive a challenge. We are sorry to hear that Private Gilbert Jessop, who was one of Nerrigundah’s best cricketers, and known on the oval as “Toots,” has been gassed and taken as a prisoner of war.Private Alf Crapp, whom we reported some time back as having enlisted for Home defence, as it was found that he was over the prescribed age for Service Abroad, has now re-enlisted, this time for the A.M.C. and will sail on the 9th of the month.

what’s on—fishing Your up to date Tackle World Moruya Fishing report Moruya and Tuross River Vol 16 September 15th 2017 The Moruya bridge7th, area is holding some large schools of fish 28 April December 2017 Vol 48 27th 2018 including luderick, bream and perch. Fresh and live baits have worked for the luderick and bream. Paddle tail soft plastics and surface lures are working great for the Perch. At the hole in the wall, if you can get your lure or bait past the pinkie snapper there are a few nice sized bream sitting under the school's. Perch and bream are hanging around the oyster racks in Tuross with 80 mm bloodworm wrigglers and Atomic crank baits working best. Some flathead have been caught up in the shallows around the four-ways using Gulp soft plastics particularly in pumpkin seed colour. Rocks and Beaches Off the rocks at South Heads and Bingi is fishing well for squid with the most popular colour jigs being red and pink this week. Crayfish are still around the rocks at the moment and our cray pots have been catching plenty. The break wall in Moruya is the place to go for some good salmon and tailor sessions. Pillies and gang hooks or Arma metals are both working well. A little further south has seen several nice catches of groper and drummer off the rocks using crabs for bait. Offshore Plenty of table sized flathead are being caught drifting Windsock beach. Baits like pillies and squid have been working well. The reefs at roughly 60 to 70 metres have been producing some good numbers of fish including snapper, nanygai and mowie. The tuna are patchy out wide but good numbers of fish are still being caught. This week’s freshwater report is brought to us by Josh, owner, Tackle World Goulburn. Wyangala Dam Hit & Miss!! Not the way I like to start a fishing report but that’s how it is at present at the dam. Fishing in winter can be hard work but can also be very rewarding if you fish the right way. The best way to fish the dam at this time of year is from the bank or in shallow water no more than 3 metres. Most fish will be in the shallows looking for the warmth through the day. Try using worms from the bank, this is by far your best bet. If you’re in a boat worms or grubs around the trees and rocky banks - the slower you can move the baits the better the results. Pejar Dam Very quiet. Pejar dams water level has dropped a good deal and therefore the fishing has shut down. The easterly weather didn't help things last weekend but that could all change this weekend with another nice weekend predicted. Try using a Hester jointed minnow or Tassie from the bank, these should find a cruising fish. If baits more your thing worms are by far your best choice. Wollondilly River Good numbers of redfin in the lower parts of the river below Tefco, with most fish being caught on lures - the favoured being a red celta. Dropshoting close to the trees is the secret to larger fish - work the bait slowly and the action won’t be far away. Most parts of the river are fishing well but the favoured area is the lower parts from Victoria St Bridge down. Tight lines my friends and remember “every day’s a good day for fishing … “ Team Tackle World Moruya

Several tourists have vanished while relaxing on the beautiful beaches of the Channel Coast. There lives a small community of fishermen and other oyster farmers. Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Human Flow 29 July at Narooma Kinema 28 April December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27thSunday 2018
Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact. Captured over the course of an eventful year in 23 countries, the film follows a chain of urgent human stories that stretches across the globe in countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, France, Greece, Germany, Iraq, Israel, Italy, Kenya, Mexico, and Turkey. Human Flow is a witness to its subjects and their desperate search for safety, shelter and justice: from teeming refugee camps to perilous ocean crossings to barbed-wire borders; from dislocation and disillusionment to courage, endurance and adaptation; from the haunting lure of lives left behind to the unknown potential of the future. Human Flow comes at a crucial time when tolerance, compassion and trust are needed more than ever. This visceral work of cinema is a testament to the unassailable human spirit and poses one of the questions that will define this century: Will our global society emerge from fear, isolation, and self-interest and choose a path of openness, freedom, and respect for humanity? Amazon Studios and Participant Media present, in association with AC Films, Human Flow, a film directed by Ai Weiwei. Human Flow is produced by Ai Weiwei, Chin-Chin Yap and Heino Deckert and executive produced by Andrew Cohen of AC Films with Jeff Skoll and Diane Weyermann of Participant Media. Bay Theatre Players are delighted to announce that the mid-year production for 2018 will comprise four Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 April December 7th, 2017 monologues from Alan Bennett’s famous Vol 48 27th 2018 ‘Talking Heads’ series. On stage from 20 - 29 July 2018. 7:30pm 20, 21, 27 & 28 July and 2:00pm 22, 24, 28 & 29 July. All four one-act plays will be performed at each show. Tickets will be on sale on line now. Also available from 10am - 12 noon on Saturdays only at the theatre box office at 33 Gregory Street Batemans Bay. Adult $20.30; Concession $18.30; Group of 20 or more $17.30. Written by British playwright Alan Bennett, author of many well-known works including ‘Lady in the Van’, ‘The History Boys’ and ‘The Madness of George III’, the ‘Talking Heads’ series of one-act plays were first produced for BBC TV in the 1980s. Amusing and witty, with a touch of pathos, the four monologues chosen by director Jenny Kohlhagen for inclusion in Bay Theatre Players Inc July 2018 production give us an insight into the mindset of four very different women.

‘Soldiering On’ features Ursula ‘Nik’ Nixon, well known to our local audiences from her many appearances on our stage, including in the unforgettable ‘Shoehorn Sonata’. Nik’s character Muriel is recently widowed and evolves to be a master of self-deception and moral blindness. Narrell Murdoch is Susan, the vicar’s wife in ‘Bed Among the Lentils’ – a woman with a lot to hide from her husband and his parishioners. Susan’s tragic story is not without moments of hilarity! Narrell has performed in many BTP productions, including roles in ‘Annie’ and ‘Minefields and Miniskirts’ in recent years. We encounter someone we all know in ‘A Cream Cracker Under the Settee’, as Jenny Grinlinton, who we last saw on stage in the 2016 production of ‘Forget Me Not’, plays the elderly Doris. Doris is determined to remain in her own home rather than be ‘put away in a nursing home’. Doris, however, is disillusioned with the home help that has been arranged by the council to enable her to manage at home. Recipient of multiple CATS nominations and awards for her theatre work, Candy Burgess will entertain you as ‘A Lady of Letters’ - a woman who has taken the concept of neighbourhood watch to the extreme. In this final monologue, our ‘Lady of Letters’, Irene Ruddock will amuse and delight you as she draws you into her world. beagle weekly : Vol 57 June 29th, 2018

Victor Ego is a ‘one-man’ play, conceived, written and performed by Patrick Dickson. Hugo is at work in his studio as he pulls together the essential ingredients of a ripping yarn which will become a best-selling novel. He conjures up a cast of characters and spices their relationships with betrayal, obsession, love, sacrifice and a dash of skullduggery. The beautiful, rugged seascape of the Norman Archipelago isn’t simply a back-drop; for Hugo it’s a powerful and unpredictable player in the drama of life and death. The play is both a distillation of a gothic romance and an exploration of the imagination and alchemy of one of the greatest literary figures of the nineteenth century. This production can only happen with the creative support of O’Punksky’s Theatre, a Sydney company Patrick has been associated with for nearly 30 years. The project also features the essential and welcome contribution of local media artists. Patrick Dickson is a well-known and well-respected Australian actor. He played a pivotal character in the ABC’s famous Seachange series and is extremely well known in the Sydney theatre circles. He also appeared in Janet King, Bridge Too Far, Home & Away and Rogue Nation
