editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, New days are upon us. It is a long weekend and the gates are open for visitors to return.

Restored are some of the things we have all sorely missed. FiBy of us can now return to the pub, fiBy of us can return to our favourite cafes and restaurants, up to 20 people can aDend weddings, 50 at funerals and 50 at places of worship , we can visit museums, galleries and libraries and from Saturday the 13th of June, fitness, gyms, pilates, yoga and dance studios can reopen, pools, taDoo parlours, massage parlours, brothels and even community centres can open.

While it might tale some Eme yet to reinstate fesEvals, plays and concerts the next BIG event we can look forward to coming out of Lock Down, involving tens thousands of parEcipants will be the Eden Monaro byelecEon voEng day on July 4th.

With more re-openings inevitable as we open our bubble to other states and even New Zealand it might come as a surprise that the Minister for Local Government, Shelley Hancock, is sEll insistent that there will be no Council elecEons in 2020. While the declaraEon requires an Official Order that must be GazeDed the Minister appears to be playing some sort of poliEcal game by not officially acEng, resEng on a subterfuge that sounds more like “If I announce it then that becomes fact”.

The Minister for Random Announcements this week also made another that has well and truly put the possums up Local Councils when she touted the prospect of postal voEng next year during an online meeEng of mayors on Thursday, as reported by MaD O’Sullivan in the SMH reporEng “ Ms Hancock confirmed she was considering the opEon of bringing forward universal postal voEng for the 2021 council elecEons but said a final decision had not been made.”

So, it appears that by September you will be able to go to a pub for predinner drinks with 9 of your friends, then on to a restaurant to later aDend a massage parlour, brothel or taDoo shop with no difficulty at all. Maybe some of those may have flown in from interstate or even New Zealand for the reunion. By then we would have a new Federal Member for Eden Monaro following the open public elecEons of July 4th and will have returned to the gym or the pool with 100 others.

So why exactly is Shelley Hancock refusing to change her mind? It now appears that she is considering the opEon of bringing forward universal postal voEng for the 2021 council elecEons but said a final decision has not been made. More on that to come.

Guy was an honoured guest at the wedding or Prince Harry and Meghan in 2018, so much so that the Queen was allowed to ride with hi from the church to the recepEon. The story of Guy is a good news story that should bring a tear to all dog lovers.

In 2015, Guy was found wandering the woods in Kentucky, USA. He was placed in a pound where is days were numbered to be saved by a Canadian who has a passion for rescuing and rehoming beagles. A team of volunteers agreed to drive Guy to Canada. Each person took a one or two hour segment of the journey, passing Guy from car to car and stranger to stranger unEl he arrived at A Dog’s Dream Rescue.

The story goes that Guy wasn’t long at the shelter before actor, Meghan Markle, called to find out if there were any beagles available for adopEon. She was living in Toronto, filming the series Suits, and was looking for a companion for her other Beagle rescue, named Bogart.

If federal by-elec+ons can happen in July why can't council elec+ons happen two months later in September?

In a media release issued today the Shadow Minister for Local Government Greg Warren said "CommuniEes right across the state conEnue to face confusion and uncertainty whilst the Minister for Local Government, Shelley Hancock, refuses to make an oďŹƒcial decision regarding the date of council elecEons.

"In March this year the Local Government Act 1993 (the Act) was amended to allow the Minister - by an order of the published GazeDe - to postpone the elecEons by 12 months from the date of the order.

"However, the Minister has failed to actually make the order.

"There have been recent suggesEons that the elecEons should proceed in September 2020. as originally planned due to the easing of social distancing restricEons - rather than being postponed unEl 2021.

The Shadow Minister for Local Government said "regardless of what side of the debate people stood on everyone needed certainty." "More than two months aBer Minister Hancock was given the power to postpone the upcoming council elecEons, she has failed to actually make any oďŹƒcial decision", Mr Warren said.

"To date Ms Hancock's tenure as Minister for Local Government has been plagued by indecision and its communiEes who conEnually pay the price.

"Candidates don't decide to run a day before polling booths open and elecEons aren't planned the night before.

"Appropriate polling venues need to be located and leased out. and most importantly communiEes need certainty around who will be their councillors both in the short and long-term.

"It's budget Eme for councils and they need to know whether to allocate funding for an elecEon in 2020/21 or 2021/22," Mr Warren said. "I can understand the arguments from both sides of the debate but what I cannot fathom is a Minister who doesn't have enough convicEon or backbone to make a decision and stand by it.

"CommuniEes. candidates and councils need answers and they need those answers now." Mr Warren concluded.

State forest campers reminded to be COVID-19 safe this long weekend With reopening of State forests for camping this week, Forestry CorporaEon of NSW is reminding visitors Vol 16the September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 12th 2018 2019 planning a 27th long weekend trip to take COVID-19 precauEons. Forestry CorporaEon’s Tourism & Partnerships Manager, Louise Faulkner said that visitors are now welcome to camp on State forests and visit picnic areas, but should plan ahead for a safe trip.

“We are pleased to reopen most of our camping and picnic areas to visitors in Eme for the long weekend, but please remember that social distancing sEll applies, numbers for large groups are sEll limited to 10 and hand hygiene is essenEal,” said Ms Faulkner.

“This means you’ll need to pack your hand saniEser, soap and water, and need to be across the current Public Health Orders.”

Visitors should also check the Forestry CorporaEon of NSW website for any forest closures and register their visit through the online form there.

“As part of the NSW Government’s efforts to track COVID-19 cases, we are encouraging visitors to lodge their contact details when camping in NSW State forests, via our website,” Ms Faulkner said. “This informaEon will be used to help track any COVID-19 cases connected to our campgrounds and for no other purpose. We also encourage visitors to download the COVIDSAFE app from the Australian Government website.”

Bumper field lining up for RALLY OF THE BAY Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Over 60 entries have so far been received for the 2020 AMH Vol 48 April 27th 111 July 12th 2018 2019

AutomoEve Group Rally of the Bay, just two days aBer entries were officially opened by the Eurobodalla Shire Council Mayor, Liz Innes.

Tony Sullens and Kaylie Newel in the The event has a maximum field of 90 and with many outright Citroen DS3 contenders on the list, the rally is going to be a spectacular opening to the rally season for 2020. With the COVID-19 Pandemic forcing event organisers to cancel their events earlier in the season, the AMH AutomoEve Group Rally of the Bay will be the first opportunity rally teams will have to get their cars back into the forest.

The rally is the first round of the MTA NSW Rally Championship and the ACT Regional Rally Series, however there are also many Australian Rally Championship teams using the event as a test before their first championship round gets underway later in the year. The list of outright contenders is headed by the Factory Toyota team of brothers and team-mates Harry and Lewis Bates in a Toyota Yaris AP4.

Nathan Quinn is a former Australian Rally Champion and the 2019 East Coast Classic Rally Series winner. He will be lining up to take on the Toyota Team in a Lancer EVO 10 and with his recent win at the Alpine Rally late last year, he is one of the favourites to win.

Another contender for outright victory is Richie Dalton and Dale MoscaD in a Ford Fiesta G4. The pairing from Sydney have won the event for the past two years and are looking to make it three in a row. In the MTA NSW Rally Championship, Tom Clarke and Ryan Preston in a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO are favourites, but they will have last years two-wheel drive champions, Tony Sullens and Kaylie Newell snapping at their heels in a Citroen DS3.

The AcEv Rallysport Team from Melbourne is sending a conEngent of drivers including JJ HaDon and Troy Dowell, both driving Hyundai i20 G4’s. They will be joined by father and son Darren and Arron Windus, who will both be driving in Subaru WRX’s.

Classic rally fans are also in for a treat with the welcome return of Tom Dermody in a Ford Escort RS1800, Clay Badenoch in a Toyota Celica RA40 and Mal Keough in an Audi QuaDro S1 set to headline the East Coast Classic Rally Series.

Narooma Camera Club news Narooma Camera Club has been conEnuing to funcEon as a club and run online to maintain a monthly compeEEon for our16financial members.

Vol September 15th 2017 It has been an interesEng Eme and a 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Eme to adapt but to also provide our members with a way that they can all see the judging and run the compeEEons sEll. Thankfully our commiDee this year came up with a way that has worked well.

We were lucky to have remote judges who are happy to do their judging and email us back the reports then we do up a video with the images and the feedback for our members. We have the results of the compeEEon on our website and a list of the winners for the month too.

The Set subject for May 2020 – Wild and Vivid Colours we had some very interesEng and colourful images submiDed. CompeEEon was fierce in all grades.

We were very lucky to have Linda Fury she is the current president of the Kiama Shellharbour Camera Club (KSCC). We would like to extend our thanks to Linda for a great job in judging over 40 images and awarding the Gold, Silver and Highly commended to the Grades of A, B and C. Margaret BenneD, Chief ExecuEve Southern NSW Local Health District says whilethe flu vaccine won’t combat COVID-19, it will help reduce the severity and spread of flu.

“We’re urging everyone who can be vaccinated to do so and help stop the spread of the infecEon in the community especially to others more vulnerable, like children and the elderly.

“The flu can lower a person’s immunity and make them suscepEble to other illnesses such as COVID-19.”

If you're feeling unwell – even with the mildest of symptoms such as a runny nose or scratchy throat – come forward for a free COVID-19 test, so cases in the community are idenEfied as quickly as possible. People who may show no obvious symptoms or have very mild symptoms can unwi[ngly pass it to others if they are incubaEng the infecEon. Meanwhile people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, Aboriginal people and those with high-risk medical condiEons can be vaccinated for the flu for free by GPs under the NaEonal ImmunisaEon Program.

There’s also a free NSW-funded vaccine available to all children aged six months to five years. It’s recommend you call your GP, clinic or pharmacist to ensure the vaccine available.

The NSW Government has invested approximately $130 million in the 2019-20 ImmunisaEon Program budget, including Commonwealth and state vaccines.

Historical Society turns 50 The idea of a Historical Society began with a meeEng in the Zanadvoroff’s house in Broulee Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th,ornithologist 2017 Vol April 2018 to48 hear noted and historian Alec 111 Julya27th 12th 2019 Chisholm lecture on local birdlife. It was he who suggested that a place so steeped in colonial history should have a Historical Society.

Harry Lou[t and Frank Finlayson (Frank was the editor of the Moruya Examiner) took up his idea. A public meeEng in the CWA hall was sufficiently enthusiasEc for Harry to have the leaflet printed adverEsing the first meeEng to be held at the High School on Sunday night the 14th of June 1970. The Society was to be called the Eurobodalla Historical Society, a society to encompass the whole Shire.

In 1970 John Gorton was Prime Minister and Joe Bjelke-Petersen Premier of Queensland with Gladys Berejiklian about to be born. It was also the year Pope Paul IV visited Australia, the Beatles were definitely breaking up and the younger generaEon were listening to Johnny Farnham singing “Raindrops keep falling on my head”, the Beatles “Let it be” and John Williamson’s “Old Man Emu”. It was a Eme when you could get a free secretarial training course with the Commonwealth Public Service and some Moruya High School parents were slightly shocked by the school’s producEon of “Hair”.

In the first year of its life the Society conducted an exhibiEon at the Moruya Show where old photographs and artefacts were displayed. The members explored many avenues to obtain suitable premises for the Society to enable the establishment of a Museum and in January 1972 they secured a lease on the front 2 rooms of 39 Queen Street and that summer opened the Museum. The next year 39 Queen St. was put up for aucEon by the Church of England and the Society was not able to match the $5,000 offered by the highest bidder so were once again looking for premises. Their quest eventually led to the purchase of 85 Campbell Street the western half of two terrace houses which had been built by Abraham EmmoD in 1872.

Once ownership of 85 Campbell Street was secure work began in earnest repairing the building to a more habitable standard. As with any old building restoraEon is an ongoing process and sEll conEnues today.

Today the Historical Society has on display many artefacts depicEng the history and culture of the area, along with a library containing informaEon on local history and genealogy. There is also an extensive archival collecEon of informaEon from local businesses and families. Don’t stand alone on solar Over 20 percent of Eurobodalla homes have solar power. New regulaEons allowing energy providers to power their customers with stand-alone systems could see that percentage rise further.

Eurobodalla Council’s sustainability coordinator Mark Shorter said it took ten years to get from the first gridconnected solar installaEon to 10,000 kilowaDs of solar, but only two further years to reach 20,000. “Since then, there’s been another 2,034 kilowaDs added and it would be great to see the shire reach 30,000 by the end of the year,” Mr Shorter said.

He said there was an argument for increasing baDery storage too and welcomed new Australian Energy Market Commission rules that enable energy networks to use stand-alone systems. “The changes mean networks like EssenEal Energy can use solar and baDery, with generator backup, to service remote customers and communiEes,” Mr Shorter said.

“Council has also advocated for these changes, which could increase grid resilience in remote areas of the shire; power is more likely to remain available during emergencies and more quickly restored if lost.”

Mr Shorter said there was a strong business case to install stand-alone systems where small numbers of customers were located at the end of a long electricity distribuEon lines, and “reducing vegetaEon management costs and bushfire risk makes electricity cheaper for everyone overall.” He said householders could also look to solar and baDery opEons.

“We had electricity blackouts this summer and houses with solar panels were oBen in the same boat as everyone else – no power,” he said. “However, solar and baDery can power through a blackout, though you pay a bit extra for the right setup. It’s about weighing prioriEes against cost savings and that varies for each household, business and organisaEon. “For example, Council has installed 750 kilowaDs of solar power across its faciliEes but only a single baDery system, at the Dalmeny hall. At the moment it’s solar panels delivering beDer financial and environmental outcomes for Council.”

Conserva*onists on the South Coast of NSW are worried about the future of their marine sanctuaries Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

ConservaEonists on the South Coast of New South Wales are concerned about the future of their marine environment aBer the NSW government opened up five sanctuary zones in Batemans Marine Park to the public in December, 2019.

From the prisEne shorelines of Potato Point in Eurobodalla, Bill Barker (right) is worried that opening the sanctuary zones to recreaEonal fishing will reverse 15 years of conservaEon efforts.

“Marine parks are important places where marine life can grow and flourish, and restore the habitat to something approaching its natural state aBer years of destrucEon caused by human acEvity and polluEon,” said Mr Barker.

As a member of the Nature Coast Marine Group, a non-profit organisaEon located on the South Coast of NSW, Mr Barker believed that the group’s work in educaEng the community about marine conservaEon has been “completely wiped out. We have programs in the local schools where we teach students about the role of sanctuary zones in protecEng the marine environment’s biodiversity now and into the future,” said Mr Barker.

Jenny Edwards, secretary of the Nature Coast Marine Group, said that sanctuary zones have protected threatened species in the Batemans Marine Park. “It’s not just fish we are worried about, there are many other organisms that are endangered,” she said. “The grey nurse sharks, which are found in Montague Island, are now vulnerable to irresponsible fishing.”

Montague Island was one of the five sanctuary zones in Batemans Marine Park that the NSW government opened up for recreaEonal fishing on December 12, 2019.

Mr Barker said sanctuary zones stopped over-fishing and were the only areas where fishing was banned in the enEre Marine Park. “These no-fishing zones made up less than 20% of the total Marine Park, and were placed in low-usage areas. So that leB over 80% of the Marine Park open for fishing,” he said.

“In naEonal parks, people have accepted that there are places you can and cannot hunt. The same idea needs to be applied to the marine environment. We can’t have endless amounts of fishing otherwise fish stocks won’t grow and their habitats will be destroyed. Sadly, some people think they can fish wherever they want, whenever they want.”

However, President of Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club Les Waldock said that local fishers had felt “cheated” by the sanctuary zones’ previous bans on fishing. “Sanctuary zones were introduced in places that were favourable and popular for fishing, and to the wrong effect,” he said. “People never agreed with sanctuary zones.”

Mr Waldock said that many local fishers applauded the government’s “common sense” in its decision to liB the Marine Park’s fishing restricEons. “Fishing is a top of the tree hobby in our community,” he said. “For some people, it’s a lifestyle. Opening these sanctuary zones means that recreaEonal fishers can go back to some of their favourite fishing areas around the Eurobodalla Shire. There will also be fishermen coming in from all over NSW and the ACT to access these spots once things return to normal. community The member for Bega Andrew Constance said in an interview with Narooma News that he wanted to balance “recreaEonal, tourism, and conservaEon values” across all marine Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 parks in NSW. Mr Constance also told reporters at Narooma News that the Batemans Marine Park’s sanctuary zones were introduced “without any sound ecological reason”.

The offices of the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Mr Constance were contacted for an interview. Both offices declined to comment.

Mr Barker said, “Mr Constance’s off the cuff decision ignored the government’s requirement for public consultaEon before they rolled back the sanctuary zones.“Mr Constance decided he’d make a decision first and have a consultaEon aBerwards.”

Ms Edwards said that no government agency has approached the Eurobodalla community for consultaEon since they opened up the sanctuary zones in December. “The government is taking the back door approach and they are not speaking with the people in the community who are very worried about the environmental impact of this decision,” said Ms Edwards. “The government has shown that they are quite happy to listen to a vocal minority of angry fishers, and ignore the conservaEon groups.”

Mr Waldock said that Mr Constance had a lot of pressure from recreaEonal fishing groups, including his own, to open up the sanctuary zones to the public. Environmental educaEon officer for Eurobodalla Shire Council BernadeDe Davis said that the coastal community is made up of residents who care about the marine environment.

“In the local Dhurga language, Eurobodalla means ‘land between waters’. So the people who live down here are passionate enough that they want to live here and enjoy the natural beauty and resources we have,” said Ms Davis.

As a community that “shares a love of the water”, Mr Barker believed the state government could have made a decision that involved all parEes concerned about sanctuary zones in the Batemans Marine Park.“Our organisaEon knows that for some people, recreaEonal fishing is a spiritual part of their life,” he said.“Fishers love being out in the water and in tune with the environment and we can all respect that.

“But Mr Constance has decided to ignore the conservaEon groups who are commiDed to protecEng the Marine Park. This is nothing new. The state government has had a hosEle a[tude towards marine parks since they were elected into office back in 2011. This has created division in our community, and it is really disappoinEng.” Ms Edwards said the Nature Coast Marine Group has reached out to Mr Constance to raise the group’s concerns about rolling back the sanctuary zones, but her organisaEon is “not holding out a lot of hope.The coaliEon government has signalled they do not want to protect our sanctuary zones in the future,” she said.

Ready for COVID Care through Innova*on An innovaEon partnership involving the region’s three major health services is ready to be trialled, providing Vol 16 September 15th local 2017 residents with access to a Virtual Community Care Centre. The Illawarra 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 Shoalhaven Local Health District, Southern NSW Local Health District and COORDINARE – South Eastern NSW PHN have joined forces to prepare the first collaboraEve, cross-regional virtual care approach in NSW. The technology will enable clinical teams to extend tailored paEent care when required, across a large geographic boundary. Illawarra Shoalhaven LHD Chief ExecuEve, Margot Mains, said this would assist COVID-19 paEents at home by providing increased opportuniEes to be assessed, while staying in touch with a mulEdisciplinary team which includes their GP. “If someone tests posiEve, the Virtual Community Care team will assess them to determine the best individual treatment plan in close collaboraEon with the paEents’ local GP,” she said.

As part of Virtual Community Care, the paEents will receive a Health Care kit containing tools to check their blood pressure, blood oxygen levels and temperature. The kit contains a small computer tablet to record results so these can be sent wirelessly to the team for assessment. The Bell in the Lake—a review by Trevor Moore Lars MyBng, MacLehose, 2020 (Gyldendal Norsk, 2018), ISBN 978 0 85705 938 3, 392pp Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 111 July 27th 12th 2018 2019 This is Lars My[ng’s second work of ficEon. His first was 2017’s The Sixteen

Trees of the Somme which I reviewed, I am surprised to see, in these columns in September 2017. My word, how Eme flies and how the world has changed since then. And it has changed even more since the late nineteenth century when the story told in this book is set. Janice’s Moruya Books is open again which is a sure signal that the world is regaining some sort of balance. It was there that I found The Sixteen Trees of the Somme and it was there that I found The Bell in the Lake.

When I reviewed The Sixteen Trees of the Somme I said that I had picked it out because the author had wriDen a work called Norwegian Wood and because it started with a quote from Dylan’s Mr Tambourine Man. The Bell in the Lake also starts with a quote but this Eme it is from Joseph Conrad’s The Heart of Darkness: “And this also,” said Milo suddenly, “has been one of the dark places of the earth”. My[ng clearly likes bleakness: like its predecessor, the novel is set in a landscape that you are pleased that someone else inhabits.

I could not describe this a tale with a happy ending, but it is at least a tale with an ending. It is brilliantly told and wonderfully paced. It is, as they say, a page turner. Whenever I read a translaEon it made me wonder what it would be like to read it in the original, in this case, Norwegian. How much, if anything, has been lost in the translaEon. The translator of The Bell in the Lake is Deborah Dawkin and when I looked for informaEon about her, I found that The Bell in the Lake is Volume 1 of a trilogy called The Sister Bells that will develop into a grand family saga. The sister bells are at the centre of this book; one of them is “the bell in the lake”.

They were cast to commemorate conjoined twins born in the remote Norwegian village of Butangen, where the winter is hard and the people poor and supersEEous. My[ng writes, “The sister bells had neither a sad nor fearful ring.

At the core of each chime was a vibrancy, a promise of a beDer spring, a resonance coloured by beauEful, sustained vibraEons.” But this is a story the revolves around the bells and around the ancient church in which they hang and the poverty, isolaEon and the unpredictable climate of Butangen.

Butangen is “twenty years behind its neighbouring villages, which were thirty years behind Norway’s towns and ciEes, which were fiBy years behind the rest of Europe”.

The church in Butangen is an old mediaeval stave (or wooden) church, constructed on Ember with elements of old Norse supersEEons interwoven with ChrisEanity. Academic interests in Dresden are concerned that these old churches are being demolished and wish to preserve this one by dismantling, shipping it to Dresden and reconstrucEng it. They send a young architect and draughtsman, Gerhard Schonauer, to oversee this project. Butangen has a new parson Kai Schweigaard who is struggling to gain acceptance in the community but who wants to build a more modest church for the community.

To achieve this he has sold the old church to the Dresden people.

This is all excitement for a local community that is isolate from the rest of the world and that is not used to visitors. Of course, to make a story that has two leading men, you need a woman. The woman is Astrid Hekne who is descended from the family of the conjoined twins and, therefore, spiritually

But the book is more than that. My[ng, through his translator, offers us descripEons of the bleakness of Norwegian life in the winter that draws us in. There is always an underlying current of culture and supersEEon that the newcomers, Gerhard Schonauer and Kai Schweigaard can never come to terms with and will never be part of. Interwoven with the cultural backdrop are the tradiEons of Astrid’s family.

The Bell in the Lake is a wonderful read. If you read and enjoyed The Sixteen Trees of the Somme then this is definitely a book for you. And even if you didn’t, it’s sEll a book for. No doubt Janice has your copy waiEng for you when you call into Moruya Books.

Sure, there are some cultural and trivial ethnic differences as any geneEcist will aDest. In fact, it’s the remarkable advance in geneEc science allied to similar progress in paleo-anthropology that has exposed the various ‘races’ that perished via natural selecEon unEl there was just one survivor. Us. Unhappily, it’s the knowledge carried deep in our lizard brain of the struggle between those races that has persisted unEl today. But even it would have probably died away had it not been for one parEcular group who we can thank for the tragedy that besets America.

UnEl only 12,000 years ago the people of the BriEsh Isles and Northern Europe were themselves dark skinned. It was only their conEnual habitaEon in their cold, wet, environment that gradually bled the need for melanin from their DNA and made their skins pallid. And Britain was favoured with the arrival 2000 years ago of an invasion from swarthy southern Europe led by Julius Caesar who brought them their first wriDen language. This allowed them to keep records in LaEn and then their several vernaculars.

Gradually, through further invasions from Scandinavia and Germany - and centuries of religious warfare - the island naEon developed a mastery of the seas and began to colonise distant lands. Needing a cheap workforce, they absolutely dominated an horrific trading of less mechanised communiEes in Africa. In the centuries from 1640 their ships made more than 10,000 journeys from Africa to the European colonies of the Caribbean and America carrying 2.7 million slaves to be bought and sold at the whim of their (white) masters.

So the lizard brain’s noEons of race as the ‘other’ to be feared and resisted was planted within the very naEon born of a rebellion that declared: ‘All men are created equal; they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’

Add to that liDle moral dilemma the BriEsh industries which demanded cheap coDon for their satanic mills, then spice it with the noEon that poverty equals inferiority, and you have the perfect predicament for the American community to solve.

They tried civil war, a civil rights movement and even the elecEon of a melanin-rich president in Barack Obama. Nothing worked. The evidence of failure is all around us in the fires of prejudice most recently lit by the orange man in the White House.

Now with the great fires burning, the contagious diseases spreading, seas rising and the climate rebelling, the melanin-poor fellas are at last looking to them for at least some of the ways back to preserve and protect our land and our future. They hear the cry, “We’re all in this together.”

THE TRIALS OF TECHNOLOGY

Last night I experienced a technological triumph. I turned off the television.

You might snort in derision but this was not just any old T.V. Oh no. We had worn out the old one during IsolaEon and decided the Eme had come to upgrade in the holiday coDage. Our son did intense research and we now possessed the latest, thinnest, blackest and almost biggest set that is available in the modern world. It came with three instrucEon manuals that were completely incomprehensible, three remotes and something called a Sound Box. Naturally he had to do the installaEon and promised to explain everything which is why you have children. Their technology prowess almost makes up for their teenage years. We went out. He phoned wanEng a screwdriver which I thought was a strangely old fashioned request and then much later, summoned us home.

When we walked into the small living room I nearly fell over with shock. The enEre sideboard was engulfed and the sun that used to blaze through the kitchen window, was now bloDed out.

“I had to get this size for the very best recepEon,” he said proudly and began to instruct. I ordered my brain to focus because I did not want to be one of those silly old farts who don’t understand anything modern. I did take note of the long , thin remote which he waved at us like Harry PoDer with his wand and said was only to be used for ON and OFF. However, when he began to work down the list of HDMIs I began to driB and by the Eme he reached HDMI IN 3 e ARC/ ARC I was gone.

Of course you don’t absorb anything unless you are moEvated, interested and pracEse. I had mastered the advanced technology of my new washing machine and latest dishwasher in ten minutes. All my favourite Vol 16 September 15th could 2017 be accessed through the free-to-air ALL CHANNELS. AnEques Roadshow, Hard television programs 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Quiz, World Championship Ice SkaEng, Selling Houses Australia and Landscape ArEst of the Year were easy and familiar.

But I forced myself to listen again because knowing how to record the Lifestyle programs and be able to whizz through the millions of adverEsements, would surely add to my quality of life. Sadly, I had missed that informaEon. However my husband had not wavered in his concentraEon because he regards the mastering of the latest technology as akin to ge[ng up the hill at Iwo Jima, planEng the flag and ending WW2.

And I must say that this man who can’t work the washing machine or the dishwasher, was awesome. We watched the ABC and SBS first and the recepEon was so amazing I saw that Dr. Norman Swan had aged through the Pandemic, Laura Tingle had fingernails shorter than mine and when the Ginger Nut was giving a sunny Press Conference, I could see right through his hair.

Then we went to NETFLIX to watch the gripping BriEsh series “Bodyguard”, then back to a Channel 9 to record “Have you Been Paying ADenEon?”, zoomed over to SBS Streaming , back to Media Watch and finally, HYBPA which is short without the ads and a laugh before bed.

This wasn’t as easy as it sounds and at one stage, an instrucEon manual went flying and knocked over a mug.

But at last, with a saEsfied sigh, he waved a remote at the TV and staggered off to the shower. But wait a minute-the set hadn’t gone off. Down in the right hand corner were flashing lights and techno jargon which meant “SYSTEMS STILL RUNNING YOU IDIOT!” “I can do this!” I told myself rummaging through the baDered manuals, woolly bed socks, Milo dregs and orange peels on the coffee table. Under the cheese and crackers plate was the long, thin remote. I grabbed it, pointed, pressed. And the monster screen went black.

Whoopee!

Well, it wasn’t Iwo Jima, but in these tesEng Emes, it’s important to enjoy the smallest triumph.

Reading—history 100 Years Ago 5th June 1920 PRESENTATION.—At the service in the Kiora Church on Thursday even-last an interesting little ceremony was witnessed when Miss Nella Parbery was made the recipient of a gold brooch on the occasion of her discontinuing the duties of organist. The brooch, which was a mark of the goodwill of the Kiora friends, was pinned to the frock of the retirVol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 ing by her successor in office, Miss Dulcie Shumack. Rev. E. W. Hyde made the presentation on behalf of the Volorganist 48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 congregation.

THE SILVER MINE.– Now that the amalgamation of leases 2, 10 and 11 is complete, the Moruya Gold Syndicate is only waiting the final sanction of the Department, so that a start may be made. Machinery to the value of £6,750 is ready and awaiting shipment. It is the most up-to-date plant procurable, and consists of a 10-head stamper battery, concentrating plant and everything required for the extraction of the precious metals contained in the ore. Mr. G. Gordon has received word from the Board of Directors that local miners shall have first preference for employment and that the Log wage will be paid.

LAND SALE.– The land situated about 10 miles south-east of Bateman’s Bay and consisting of 44 acres 2 rds. which was advertised for sale at the upset price of £34 was purchased for that amount by Mr. H. B. O’Neill of Tomakin.

DESTRUCTION.– We have been asked to draw attention of the Police to the destruction of our feathered tribe in this district especially in the vicinity of town, through the free use of the catapult by youngsters. Our informant says that as many as 30 of the smaller specie of birds such as silver-eyes, etc. are killed a day. Scientists have figured out that if all bird life was destroyed, in nine years the world would be so over-run with insects, etc, that it would be impossible for human life to exist.

FOOTBALL.– Moruya footballers will play Narooma on the latter’s ground to-day (Saturday), the match to start at 3 p.m. A lorry will leave McKeon’s Hotel at 12 o’clock, and Hanscom’s car at 1.30 for those who cannot leave earlier.

There is room for about four barrackers.

LAND SOLD.– Mr. H.R. McWilliam, the well-known land salesman, has recently sold Messrs. J. Duncan’s and W. Taylor’s splendid properties at Eurobodalla for Soldier Settlements.

FLYING FOX SKINS At a recent conference of orchardists, representatives from many fruit growing districts testified to the increasing hordes of flying foxes which visit their trees each season, and it was even proposed to introduce compulsory poisoning provisions to combat the pest. The Government was asked to make further investigation with a view to the destruction of foxes in their camps. If the suggestions now made by Mr. C.W. Burrows, an officer of the Department of Agriculture, in regard to the possibility of utilising flying fox skins commercially prove practicable, there are good prospects of carrying out the work of eradication without loss. Mr Burrows reports that the skins when tanned can be readily sold, and are worth sixpence each when in a green state. He has tanned a number of skins without the aid of chemicals, only bark being used. The result was very satisfactory, and local furriers consider there is a good market for them. The skins were stretched and dried in the same way as rabbits skins, and if necessary arsenate of soda can be used to keep blowflies away. The tanning process gives a fine, soft and pliable skin suitable for manipulation in many commercial processes.

EMPIRE DAY AT BERGALIA.– After a brief address at the Bergalia, the children, parents and residents assembled at Bergalia Cheese Factory where an enjoyable picnic was held. The excellent gathering and hearty manner in which the playing of games was indulged in shows that interest in Empire Day is not waning. ….

BANK OF COMMERCE.– Bateman’s Bay, one of the most progressive towns on the South Coast, has been successful in having a branch of the Bank of Commerce opened there, Mr. Cameron being appointed manager.

MASTER STAN RICHARDS leaves Moruya with a bright future before him, being one of the most intelligent youths who has graduated from the local Post Office since the late Flight Lieut. Leslie Ross’ departure.

Took a while for me to trust her, but it looks like she's won me over. I like to play with the horses but never bet.
