editorial Welcome to this week’s editorial, So close ….. but not quite yet before we are all allowed out an about again. And when we do venture back Vol September 2017 out16there it will15th be different.

There is no doubt of that.

The bush fires made us aware of our mortality as it torched its way across the south east, destroying homes and property and impac7ng so may lives.

It leE us raFled and ill at ease. The place we called home, that was away from the madness of the world all of a sudden became a madness that very few of us could ever have imagined … right on our doorstep and threatening to burn down our doors.

For most of us we came through it rela7vely unscarred, with the excep7on that we now knew we lived in a place once surrounded by nature with its abundance of forests and na7onal parks, that was in fact an inferno wai7ng to happen again. And it will. It is only a maFer of 7me.

Following the bushfires there was a need for the community to do a reset across the region. Each and all of us looked at the bushfire maps, we each became desktop experts on knowing wind direc7ons, an7cipated ember aFack zones and home readiness with our Bushfire plans.

For those who lost their homes there has been the wai7ng for site clearing. It has taken a while but now it appears to be on track with many (or most) house sites destroyed by fire cleared of burnt material in readiness for a rebuild.

But how many will rebuild? The answer is complex as it has so many factors that contribute to the decision.

Was the house insured? Was it adequately insured?

If the insurance wasn’t enough to pay for a rebuild then what next ? Sell the block of land and move? There are those amoung the 1000 houses destroyed who were underinsured and then there were the uninsured.

For them the road ahead is going to be so much harder as they look to beginning over again with loans and debt.

For those who were insured there is a new reality when they discover that, should they rebuild, they will not be insurable, or, if they are, it will be at a premium they can ill afford.

For many the decision will be to clear the site and sell the land. To move to another town locally or even relocate to where family are, to where it is more affordable, or to rent.

Adding to those 1000 homes and families will be the newly impacted COVID genera7on who lost jobs, who are now behind in rent, u7li7es, mortgages, rates and more.

The Bushfire recovery grants have helped, the Job Seeker and Job Keeper funds will keep things buoyant for a short while but at some point those government hand outs will come to an end. And when it does the reveal of the new Normal will be stark as we discover so many shops closed and so many unemployed.

While we made much of queueing for toilet paper, sani7ser, pasta and sugar there will be many in the near distant future who will be queueing for food handouts. Sadly, once again, like with the bushfires and COVID, we will be caught unprepared.

Mike Kelly - Statement Resigna'on From Parliament Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 12thFROM 2019 RESIGNATION PARLIAMENT

It is with great sadness that I have to announce that I am resigning as the Member for Eden-Monaro effec7ve from Thursday 30 April.

This has been an intensely difficult, gut wrenching decision. I contested the last Federal Elec7on in good faith with the inten7on of serving the full term of this Parliament and beyond.

However, I’ve had serious renal health issues to work through over these last six months, related to my former Army service, which has required ten medical procedures. These issues are ongoing and I have another procedure to come in the next few months. Added to this is the recent classifica7on by the Department of Veterans Affairs that I am permanently impaired due to my deteriora7ng osteoarthri7s condi7on.

This situa7on has made it impossible to fulfil the challenging du7es that the community in Eden Monaro rightly expects of its member. At the same 7me, my wife is also having health issues and I need to provide more support to her than I have been able to.

I regret that my resigna7on will result in a by-elec7on that will be an inconvenience for the community. I hope, however, that this will also be an opportunity to bring to the forefront the extreme issues that are confron7ng us through the combina7on of the catastrophic bushfires and now the COVID-19 situa7on. In this way I hope Eden Monaro will get the extra aFen7on it needs and deserves right now.

The electorate office staff will remain in place to support all those who need help, through to the declara7on of the by-elec7on poll.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the people of EdenMonaro for allowing me to serve them throughout my 7me as Member. It has been the greatest privilege of my life. This community and region mean everything to me and I was not prepared to work on at a reduced capacity, given all the challenges ahead of us.

I intend to keep figh7ng for our region and the issues that concern me, including our security and climate change challenges. I will also stay closely in touch with our ongoing recovery effort and the community organisa7ons I am involved with.

I wish the Australian Labor Party and our leader Anthony Albanese all the very best for the next elec7on where I am sure they will form the next Government of Australia. Kristy McBain steps aside as Bega Mayor to stand as Labor candidate in upcoming Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 Eden Monaro bi-elec'on Bega Valley Mayor Kristy McBain has today announced her inten7on to nominate as the Labor Candidate in the up-coming by-elec7on for the federal seat of Eden-Monaro.

“Kristy has worked hard over the last eight years as a Councillor and I wish her well with this next chapter in her community service,” General Manager Leanne Barnes said.

Cr McBain has advised Council that she will step aside as Mayor during the elec7on campaign but remain an ac7ve Councillor in accordance with the Local Government Act. In her leFer of resigna7on Cr McBain paid tribute to the work of Council staff; “The staff of our organisa7on are second to none and they have proved to be so over and over again,” she said.

“Please pass on my sincere gra7tude to staff for the way in which they have assisted me.”

During this 7me Cr McBain will not receive mayoral allowances, and the mayoral car will be handed back to council.

Deputy Mayor Sharon TapscoF will take on the responsibili7es of Mayor in the short term.

“I will liaise with councillors and the Office of Local Government about how best to move forward following today’s announcement,” Ms Barnes says.

“The current Mayoral term runs un7l September 16 this year; one op7on is for Councillors to elect a mayor at their mee7ng in May who would see out the remaining five months before the scheduled mayoral elec7on in September.

“That person would then take us through to the local government elec7ons in 2021.”

Council will con7nue to take professional advice during this 7me as we uphold good fair and transparent governance for our community.

“Clear informa7on and leadership is key to our community’s wellbeing right now and council will con7nue to provide that during the democra7c processes ahead.”

Death of Batemans Bay man being treated as suspicious A Strike Force has been established as detec7ves con7nue to inves7gate the final movements of a man who was found lying face down in a waterway on the state’s South Coast earlier this week.

Vol 16 September 15thwere 2017 called to a property on Rauch Close, just off Island Point Road in St Georges Basin, Emergency services 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 shortly aEer 9am on Wednesday 29 April 2020, following reports the body of a man was found floa7ng face down in the water behind the house.

Strike Force Wilkin has been established by inves7gators from South Coast Police District, assisted by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, to inves7gate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, which is being treated as suspicious.

The body has been formally iden7fied as a 32-year-old man from Batemans Bay, who was believed to be staying with rela7ves in the area prior to his death.

Detec7ves are con7nuing to piece together the man’s final movements, and are appealing for anyone who may have had contact with the man between Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 April 2020, or who may have seen him in the area between 2am and 9am Wednesday 29 April 2020, to come forward.

Inves7gators would also like to speak to anyone who had contact with the man in or around Idlewild Avenue, Sanctuary Point in the aEernoon and evening of Tuesday 28 April 2020.

The man is described as being of Caucasian appearance, approximately 170cm tall, with short brown hair. He was found wearing dark pants, blue shoes and a black long sleeve shirt with circular symbols on the front and rear shoulder.

Anyone with informa7on is urged to contact South Coast police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the informa7on of the coroner.

Informa7on is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report crime via NSW Police social media pages.

Sunday 'p day Star7ng this week, Eurobodalla residents will be able to take their domes7c waste and recycling to Surf Beach and Brou 7ps on a Sunday.

Both landfills had been closed to residents since 29 March in response to the COVID-19 lockdown and the need to maintain access for essen7al services, par7cularly bushfire clean-up contractors.

Council’s director of planning and sustainability Lindsay Usher says the Sunday opening will save people driving to Moruya transfer sta7on, the only waste facility open for domes7c waste and recycling.

“We know the 7p situa7on is less than convenient for some residents, especially those without kerbside collec7on,” he said.

“Under pandemic restric7ons, however, the bushfire clean up and maintaining essen7al services like disposal of demoli7on, commercial and medical waste must be our priority.

“We hope opening Brou and Surf Beach on Sundays will bring some relief, however, I do urge people to remember that non-essen7al travel is restricted at the moment. If a trip to the 7p isn’t necessary, please don’t go.”

Mr Usher says while 7p opening hours will con7nue to be reviewed against the government’s pandemic restric7ons, there were other reasons for avoiding the 7ps if possible.

“With bushfire clean-up in full swing, Surf Beach and Brou 7ps can be quite congested,” he said.

“The clean-up contractors mostly use the sites Monday to Saturday, but if you are planning a Sunday 7p trip, it’s quite likely you’ll sit in a queue with some very large trucks. Please be pa7ent, especially with our staff who are doing their jobs under trying circumstances at the moment.”

Mr Usher said if you’re on kerbside collec7on and determined to have a lockdown clean-up, the best bet is to use your bins.

“Gradually remove your waste and recyclables using your kerbside bins rather than go to the 7p at this 7me,” he said. “That way, those who need it most will have easier access and the community and our staff are beFer protected.”

Surf Beach and Brou 7ps will now open to the public every Sunday, star7ng this Sunday, 3 May. Moruya waste transfer sta7on is open daily for residents to dispose of domes7c waste and recycling, no7ng that nonessen7al travel is banned under pandemic restric7ons. All transac7ons via EFTPOS please, no cash.

Council’s annual hard waste collec7on is scheduled to go ahead, pending NSW Government COVID-19 restric7ons. The collec7on starts on 20 July in Narooma and Tilba, working north throughout August and September.

Thirteen new fee-free TAFE NSW online short courses are Vol 16 September 15th 2017 available to2017 anyone wan'ng to 28 December 7th, Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 upskill Free short courses to support NSW Thirteen new feefree TAFE NSW online short courses are available to anyone wan7ng to upskill during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

In April 2020, TAFE NSW announced an ini7al suite of 21 fee-free short coursesto help assist job seekers and workers learn new skills, with over 84,000 people enrolling in the courses.

The NSW Government will use the new courses available to replace those which have reached enrolment capacity to ensure there are 21 accredited courses available to people wan7ng to study through TAFE NSW. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the addi7onal range of short courses will con7nue to provide opportuni7es for people to upskill during COVID-19.

“The incredible uptake to the ini7al 21 fee-free short courses shows that while many businesses across NSW are in hiberna7on there is a strong desire to upskill and gain new qualifica7ons during this challenging 7me,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Minister for Skills and Ter7ary Educa7on Geoff Lee said more than 33,000 people who enrolled in the feefree courses were studying at TAFE NSW for the very first 7me.

“We’ve had some reports of cane toads in the shire but so far they have all turned out to mostly be na7ve frogs. Bibron’s toadlet can superficially look like a juvenile cane toad, as can Peron’s tree frog - we’ve had quite a few reports of those guys.”

Mr Mar7n urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any unusual sigh7ngs or calls, but not to kill frogs they may find.

“A lot of our tree frogs are actually brown and they don’t look like those green tree frogs that you see on the postcards. They’re really special liFle frogs, so we don’t want people killing them,” he said.

“You can get the Frog ID app on your phone and record their call, or you could take a photograph and send it to us.

“With the climate warming up, cane toads could establish a popula7on here. We were very lucky this was a male - a female can lay a staggering 30,000 eggs at a 7me.”

It’s thought the toad hitch-hiked into the area. www.iga.com.au/catalogue Mr Mar7n praised the Benjamins’ for their quick work.

“It’s a great example of ci7zen science protec7ng our shire,” he said.

'OUT of the ASHES' rises like phoenix for local ar'sts The recent bushfires, and now Covid-19, have Vol 16 September 15th 2017 brought a major impact 28 December 7th, 2017 to the South East. From Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

the ashes of the fires that destroyed so much of our region there has also come warmth, generosity and a collec7ve community spirit that comes from so many sharing the same traumas and emo7ons. Denise Straty was one of the many recovery personnel called into the region aEer the fires. She saw for herself the impact and she learnt of the lives of those affected. By way of a mee7ng with Amanda, of Amanda's at Mogo, Denise learnt of the impact to the many South East ar7sts and of their responses by way of art to the bushfires. Wan7ng to do what she could for those she met she returned to Sydney with an idea. To hold an ‘Out of the Ashes’ exhibi7on next month at The Wellington Gallery – a stunningly chic warehouse space in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Waterloo.

Gallery owners Mark and Ray had generously offered the use of their exquisite venue and kindly waived any commission so that the full proceeds of each art sale would flow through to the par7cipa7ng South Coast ar7sts.

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, they have had to put the dream of a physical exhibi7on on hold for the moment, but the good news is they’ve created the exhibi7on as a Facebook e-gallery where they invite visitors to read ar7sts’ posts describing their individual tales of survival during the unprecedented deadly fire season and view their spectacular artworks.

The ar'sts profiled in this Beagle series is Rod Hayes Rod Hayes has lived on his 100 acre block at the top of the mountain for 10 years.life. He lives a life embedded in a diverse community of the Southern Shoalhaven, sharing his skills and crea7vity wildly. He hosts refugees, dinner par7es and music nights, and up un7l the fire which took his home, studio, workshop and shed, he hosted his youngest daughter and her 9 month old child in spaces he created for their use in his house.

One of the first things Rod will rebuild is his Ar7st’s Studio. As an ar7st, Rod seeks to make sense of this terrible experience through his crea7vity. Since the fire he has produced a series of lino cuts related to the fire. He has also been drawing the coast of Shoalhaven.

The Mee'ng You Have When You Are Not Having Vol 16 September 15th 2017 A Mee'ng 28 April December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 2018 Vol 111 July 12th 2019

In mid-March the EuroSCUG CommiFee made the reluctant decision to cancel all face to face mee7ngs un7l further no7ce.

BC Photos (Before Covin-19) However the commiFee was reluctant to abandon mee7ngs altogether. Video mee7ngs for such a large number did not allow the opportunity for enough individual par7cipa7on so a novel approach was tried. Many of us will remember the catch cry Calling All Argonauts- well this was Calling All EuroSCUG Members.

At exactly 10 am on Wednesday 1 April, the 7me of the regular EuroSCUG mee7ng, all members received in their inbox a message from our president beginning : ”It’s 10:00 am and .me for our EuroSCUG mee.ng. Water is available in your kitchen, facili.es are in your bathroom and the emergency exit is your front door. Obviously we can’t meet face to face at the moment but we are s.ll a club and we can s.ll pursue our interests together.”

The email went on to offer a range of ac7vi7es, each to be completed in a specific room of the member’s house. For example it was suggested that in the lounge room people watch a selec7on of You Tube videos, followed by a cup of tea and a phone call with another EuroSCUG member.

Following morning tea, as we do at our mee7ngs, members were invited to choose from a selec7on of ac7vi7es, including use of What’s App, Naviga7ng Online Shopping and Home Delivery, Photo Edi7ng (what beFer way to spend some of the new found free 7me), a variety of Brain Games and some useful stuff such as how to print from your phone and tablet. Each of these ac7vi7es was to take place in a designated room of the house and all were 7med to finish at 12 noon, when our normal mee7ng was due to finish.

Our members really entered into the spirit of things and we had such posi7ve feedback that it is being done again in May.

BAFFLED AT THE BEACH Beachwalkers at South Durras were puzzled and amused by the strange things that washed ashore recently. Carolyn Morey, of Bay and Beyond Kayaks, sent some photos to Nature Coast Marine Group to see if anyone Vol 16what September 15th 2017 knew they2018 were.

Despite ribald jokes and sugges7ons, the things turned out to be fascina7ng marine creatures, gela7nous colonial animals called Pyrosoma atlan.cum. They can grow to 60cm long and 6cm wide although the ones at Durras were smaller. The name “Pyrosoma” comes from the Greek meaning “fire body” because they oEen bioluminesce. As for the “atlan.cum” part of the name that is rather misleading as they are found in many temperate oceans as well as the Atlan7c, including the seas all around the southern half of Australia. However, as they usually live in deeper water they are not commonly stranded on beaches.

A pyrosome is a colony in the shape of a tube wider at one end and closed at the other and is made up of many cloned individual animals (zooids), each about 8mm long. They are closely related to animals with backbones because the animals have a notochord as do their solitary rela7ves the sea squirts like cunjevoi.

These primi7ve looking organisms could teach us a thing or two. The individuals all work together in harmony. Tiny hair-like projec7ons, called cilia, on the inner surface of each zooid beat in unison to draw in sea water through gill slits. This not only allows them to trap their planktonic food in mucus but also makes a current that propels the colony through the water.

While Pyrosoma spends the day at depths, some7mes as far as 800m down, the colonies are known to come nearer the surface at night. No mean feat for swimming by cilia ac7on! It is thought that their bioluminescence could aFract plankton when the sun has set.

Eurobodalla Youth zoom to catch-up online Young people across the shire can now join in Vol 16 September 15th 2017 aVol weekly catch-up online!

28 December 7th,–2017 48 27th 111April July 12th 2018 2019 Eurobodalla Council’s youth development officer Mark EFridge will be hos7ng a weekly Zoom mee7ng on Thursdays from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.

“It’s a new opportunity for people aged 12 to 24 to get together and talk about how they’re coping with COVID-19 restric7ons and share ideas on making the most of social distancing,” Mr EFridge said.

“All you need is access to a smart phone, tablet or computer with online camera and an internet connec7on.”

Off-season beach access for dogs from today From today, off-season Vol 16 September 15th 2017 7mesharing condi7ons come into 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th effect at designated dog exercise areas.

111April July 12th 2018 2019 For the next six months dogs are allowed on 7meshare beaches – on or off leash – at all 7mes. Eurobodalla Council’s manager of environmental services Deb Lenson said Eurobodalla was a dog friendly shire which allowed leashed dogs full access unless signage indicated otherwise.

“Our beaches and parks are for everyone, and our 7meshare arrangements at designated beaches helps strike a balance for dog owners and for those who don’t want to interact with dogs,” Ms Lenson said.

“Please remember, there are dog-free beaches in the shire – clearly signed – and dogs are not allowed in Na7onal Parks.”

Ms Lenson said off-season 7meshare would con7nue un7l Sunday 1 November, when peak-season restricts dog’s access to 7meshare beaches between 9am and 5pm. She advised to check the signs on the beach, visit Council’s website or call Council on 4474 1000 for the correct informa7on.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been great to see many people out exercising with their pets, but it’s important animals are effec7vely controlled,” Ms Lenson said.“No one wants likes a dog jumping over them or their children, and some people can become very frightened.”

During April, Council Rangers have issued 25 warnings to dog owners not adhering to regula7ons. Four fines of $330 each were issued to people who had been previously warned; two for having a dog in a prohibited area, and two for dogs not under effec7ve control.

Yes, I know, reams have been written about the orange elephant in the that oval

America as its final guarantor of sovereign security.

Of course, that was always a chimera, a racist construct of the Anglosphere who disdained the Keating notion that we should find out security ‘in’ Asia not ‘from’ Asia. And for evidence they point to WWII when America entered the fray against Japan. They neglect to mention that this was only after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour; and that China’s resistance engaged a million Japanese soldiers who would otherwise have been free to spread their fascist expansion southwards.

But that was then. Today Japan is a staunch American ally and even the Tony Abbotts of the Hard Right wanted to buy their submarines. (Well, they must be pretty good – their midget predecessors made it into Sydney Harbour after all).

That too was pre-Donald. Today, hardly anyone suggests Trump’s America is a good place to store your sovereign guarantee. Oh yes, there’s Angus Taylor with his ludicrous idea that we stockpile $94 million worth of oil for emergency…but store it in America! (Some day we’ll need to talk about Angus.) And Scotty Morrison, Marise Payne and Peter Dutton jumped on Donald’s ramshackle bandwagon to demand an ‘independent’ investigation into the Chinese source of coronavirus. I guess that’s the Liberal Party that Malcolm has been writing about, the one that’s taking us into the teeth of climate change with barely a policy to bless ourselves. And guess who trumpets that whole thing as a hoax?

So, hands up everyone who thinks that in November Donald is going to go gentle into that dark night of defeat at the presidential polls. Maybe one or two down the back who haven’t been paying attention? Those of us following the rocky horror show up close are in no doubt - Donald will do almost anything to avoid the public humiliation of defeat.

He knows deep down that his only legitimate electoral asset is a bounding economy, and pre-Covid-19 thanks to the Obama recovery, he had just that. But as the pandemic shuttered businesses and the unemployment lines grew, his cries of another ‘hoax’ gave way to demands to ‘liberate’ the return to work despite the medical experts’ warning of certain death for hundreds if not thousands of Americans.

Donald’s response - injections of disinfectant perhaps?

What’s next? His challenger, Joe Biden, hunkered down in his basement, is already warning that Donald might ‘postpone’ the election if the pandemic is still raging by then. Donald’s already ruled out voting by mail, so why not just a few months of himself as ‘Acting President’ until it’s safe to have a proper election?

Don’t laugh. He and his Republican Senators have already drop-kicked the Constitution with their refusal to deal with Obama’s Supreme Court nominations so they could stack their own men in place. Just imagine what an unbound orange elephant could do to it if he thought the men in white coats would come knocking on the Oval Office door while his base exercised their Second Amendment rights to shoot their guns.

Beagle Covid-19 Lockdown wri'ng compe''on: John Longhurst It had to be Johnny Bodalla. Always Johnny Bodalla.

Vol 16 September 15th were 2017 joined at the hip. He was either at the centre of it, Trouble and Johnny 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 responsible for it but in all cases blamed for it. Johnny took to his year 9 ‘studies’ at Batemans Bay High School like a seasoned veteran or as his favourite simile went like a Batehaven seagull aEer a loose chip.

Placing cling wrap over the toilets was funny but it was Johnny’s aFempt to sell the local high school to an overseas real estate developer linked to a ...... well..... very prominent United States of America poli7cian that had landed him in his current predicament. And here he was, with a crowbar in hand, doing penance for the local shire council just outside of Durras.

His job was to dig out charred stumps from the bushfires that had ravaged the area in a summer from hell.

The consensus amongst teachers, peers and indeed students was it would be impossible for him to stuff up.

The mayor himself had even marked the stumps to be dug out and his work was to be checked hourly.

Johnny laboured away, resis7ng all forms of reflec7on. It was his inability to deliver on a casino licence that had brought his real estate deal undone was the sum total of his thoughts. He rammed the crowbar into the earth and it wedged in some underground rock. With all his weight and strength he pulled the crowbar towards himself and an almighty crack split the calm silence of the bush, bringing on a cacophony of screeching parrots that echoed across Lake Durras, startling paddle boarders and canoeists alike.

Johnny looked up at the blackened tree trunks now shrouded in a new slow burning revenge fire of green ferns burs7ng with life and recovery from the devasta7on of previous months. He leaned again on the crowbar and this 7me the whole ground around him shiEed ever so slightly.

A crack in the forest floor emerged as far as he could see either side of him extending all the way over the hills in the distance. He threw all his weight on to the crowbar and this 7me there was a very no7ceable shiE in the land. A metre wide gap sliced the forest floor. As was his habit, Johnny spun around to see who was watching. Stunned, he dropped the crowbar into the now chasm and stepped back. The land beneath him was now crunching eastwards.

Seawater was rushing to fill the gap. Sirens pierced the air and helicopters hovered above.

He flicked his phone to the ABC Radio and emergency warnings were once again se]ng the rhythm of this once idyllic area.

The whole Eurobodalla Shire had become unstuck from mainland Australia. It was beagle weekly : Vol 153 May 1st 24th 2020

Geophysicists, scien7sts and engineers were immediately able to iden7fy the cause of the crisis and descended on poor Johnny Bodalla within the hour. Johnny had severed the land link aFaching the shire to Vol 16 September 2017 the mainland at15th its weakest point and set off a chain reac7on from Durras in the north to Wallaga Lake in the 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 South and west to include the inland na7onal parks within the shire. The whole shire was now afloat.

It was an absolute disaster that dwarfed the turmoil of the summer passed. Desperate measures were soon in place to re aFach to the mainland. The en7re fishing fleet of the coast were joined by the surf boats of the the various lifesaving clubs, all with ropes aFached tying to guide the shire back to the mainland. Surfers even jammed their boards against the headlands and paddled furiously to help out. The shire just con7nued to edge out to sea.

Fortunately, it manoeuvred in such a way that Snapper Island slid up the Clyde River but Tollgate Islands loomed as a poten7al disaster. The coastal towns evacuated to the inland. One hundred metres from Tollgate Islands, the Shire shuddered to a halt. The suddenness made the sedate Casey’s Beach rear up like a lion and then relax as the waves dissipated.

The whole shire then swivelled leaving Durras facing west towards the mainland. Tollgate Islands now safely 100 metres due east. Johnny Bodalla was the loneliest of figures, ashen faced, shamed and remorseful on the now western 7p of the new island. He thought about swimming to the mainland. It was preFy obvious he could not talk his way out of this trouble. However, the first dawn of the new island brought a calmness to the community. The soE oranges and deep reds birthing a welcoming sun soEened brows.

People returned to their homes. Sea views now greeted some of the inland outposts of the shire. The coast line of the shire had tripled in length. People began to muse about the new reality. Any threats from future bushfires could be easily handled. Snapper Island could become a pris7ne Na7onal Park accessible from the banks of the Clyde River. The unstable weather generated by the proximity to the Great Dividing Range would no longer be an issue. Indeed, Tollgate Islands could be a mini ManhaFan. People began to embrace the new reality. But it was the developments on the mainland and indeed world wide that clinched the fate of Johnny Bodalla. A deadly virus COVID 19 had swept down from the Northern Hemisphere and was dismantling life on mainland Australia. Isola7on and social distancing became the order from the Prime Minister. The Shire was perfectly posi7oned. It was now bushfire proof and virus free. Johnny Bodalla was beckoned back from the sea off Durras. He was feted. He was honoured.

The shire was renamed HEROBODALLA aEer him. On the beach off Durras facing west, a massive bronze statue similar in size to the Statue of Liberty was built of Johnny. It captures Johnny grinning, school shirt untucked, arm outstretched and middle finger poin7ng skyward back at the mainland.

It's s7ll quite dark, even with the candles sparsley placed on the ground. I feel the cold can and wrap my hand around it.

Bill fumbles in his pockets Vol 16 September 15th 2017 eventually finding his cigareFes and Bic lighter. It snaps on, the light temporarily 28 December 7th, 2017 in front of my eyes, somehow finding the end of Bill's smoke then disappearing. blinding me27th as 2018 it2019 shakes Vol 48 111April July 12th I sit there as my eyes readjust, Bill smoking quietly. The smell annoys me but I don't say anything. Wouldn't maFer anyway, Bill isn't one to care too much.

Its not that he's inconsiderate, far from it, he's just at that age where opening his eyes simply means he has to fill his day, and smoking is about his only pleasure.

His bony hand remembers his beer and he reaches for it in the darkness. I'm surprised at how warm his hand is. There is s7ll a strength I can feel.

"Best 7me of the day" he states, to anyone listening, "I'm up every day, earlier than this".

Another puff.

More silence.

A couple join us on the street. I recognise the McIntyres from 5 houses down. It's a good feeling to have others come out in the early morning.

There's 8 of us now, all spaced apart.

A "joining with distance".

I'd tried to get Bill to move his seat but he wouldn't.

"Stuff it", he'd said, "infec7ng me would be merciful!" and he uFered a raspy laugh that let me know it wasn't up for discussion.

"Besides, I'm hardly likely to infect you, I don't go out anywhere and the Meals On Wheels people don't come inside".

He smoked.

More silence.

I saw a couple of people looking at us si]ng there in our chairs.

Bill never wore his medals, as apprecia7ve as he was at being awarded them he'd told me the loss he'd suffered couldn't be soothed by some bits of metal.

I'd rarely asked him much about his war years, even though we'd sat and chaFed about life, poli7cs and day to day issues many 7mes, more now since his wife's passing.

I figured if Bill wanted to tell me he would.

It had been 6 years since Elizabeth had leE the earth, leaving our family a not spoken about "adopted Grandfather" over our fence.

My kids loved him.

My curiously faFening Labrador loved him.

"I don't normally drink this 7me of the morning but with all these restric7ons in place and no real Anzac Day I got to thinking a morning toast facing the sunrise was the least I could do for them".

Somehow it DID seem the right thing and I told Bill I'd be back in a minute.

Not long aEer I plunked down in my chair, ripping a can open.

"Cheers Bill" I said clinking my beer against his "here's to you and all your mates, thank you".

Bill spoke soEly "I think there's a few heads turned! ".

"Who cares mate" I said "you bloody well earned it" "Absolutely, but I don't want them thinking I'm a pisshead, they might start talking about me!"

Our muffled laughter earned a few more looks so we took a swig of beer to shut ourselves up.

The light was beginning to increase quickly now.

"Whats the 7me boy?"

(It was always "boy" even though I'm 56.)

I flicked my phone on.

"About a minute to go".

"Here, help me ouFa this damn chair, my hips playing up a bit, must be some rain coming".

I eased my arm under Bill's, his frail frame slowly straightening as he got himself erect.

"Pass my hat will you".

I handed Bill his prized possession.

A slouch hat he'd kept all those years.

The only piece of war he reckoned joined him to all his mates, alive or dead.

I could almost hear the guns in Bill's head. The roar of baFle. The horror of the trenches. The screams of the dying.

The blood and mud.

He staggered slightly and I reached out quickly to support him but he brushed my hand away.

"Stop fussing boy" he gently chided "its like having Lizzie here!"

Bill reached up to his hat, moving it slightly on his head. In the pale light I could easily see the pride.Hat raked at an angle, cockily perched, the strap snugged against his frail chin.

For a moment, as I looked, I could see the young Bill.

Tall and straight backed.

Keen and sure.

A boy really.

A boy with a sureness that he was headed off to save his country from invasion. A boy with a sureness that his contribu7on was cri7cal to the worlds beFerment.

And for that moment as Bill stood, it seemed that from deep within he found the strength and determina7on to stand his ground once more.

I never meant to cry, but it was impossible to halt the tears, the haun7ng sound of the lone bugler ringing out through the neighbourhood.

I sneaked a look at Bill, his cheeks wet as well, his lips quivering.

He saluted to nobody, yet to all.

The images racing through his mind as he honoured those memories. We stood there in total silence. Shoulder to shoulder.

It felt good.

All too soon it ended.

An awkward moment seFled on us. People thanked Bill, obviously wan7ng to shake his hand or hug him.

The forced distance serving to rob Bill of the only real contact he had with the neighbourhood these days.

"Anybody says they've never been affected by war doesn't have a damn clue what freedom is" he mused "come on, grab those chairs and you can make me an egg on toast".

We ambled slowly down my driveway.

"You got any Scotch?" he enquired.

"Easy mate" I said.

"I had to ask" Bill chuckled….

FAMILY HISTORY CORNER No 4 Star'ng a Family Tree. Today I will assume that you have signed up to Ancestry.com.au and that you wish 16 September 15th 2017 toVol start a family tree.

You do not need to be a paid 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 subscriber yet.

Go to the “Trees” tab at the top leE-hand side of the page and select “start a new tree”. If you already have a tree then you will need to navigate to “create and manage trees”.

It is usual for the star7ng person to be a living person – just in case you need to use DNA tes7ng at a later stage. The public will not be able to view the details of living people.

The next step is to add the parents. If they are no longer living then their details will be visible to other users.

When you save the first parent you will be asked to name the tree and allow/ disallow others to see it. To my mind part of the joy of genealogical research comes from sharing informa7on and discovering new rela7ves. This is facilitated by allowing others access to your family tree. They will not be able to see living members. However, you may have reasons why you wish to keep your tree private.

Now we have 3 people in our family tree. Con7nue adding people. Most of us know the names of our grandparents and great-grand parents – but perhaps not their dates of birth and death. These are not necessary at this stage but can probably be found by free research on Familysearch.

Use Familysearch and other sources to drive the boundaries backwards and sideways (looking for siblings of your ancestors).

In Ancestry it is possible to view your family in three different ways: Pedigree View shows only the direct line of ancestors.

Reading—history 100 Years ago—May 1st 1920 WEDDING.- A quiet wedding was celebrated in the Sacred Heart Church on Monday evening, when Vincent, youngest son of Mrs W. Ryan, of Mynora, was united in the Holy Bonds of matrimony to Miss Jean, daughter VolMr 16 and September 15th Rankin, 2017 of Mrs John of Eurobodalla, and sister of Mr E. J. Rankin of Kiora. Rev. Father O’Sullivan 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 officiated.

SOMETHING SPECIAL.- The Australian Kinema Picture Company announces a special aFrac7on for Friday next 7th inst. When a sensa7onal Australian produc7on ‘The Bermagui Mystery” will be unreeled. Scenes and familiar faces at Bermagui, Narooma, Tilba and Central Tilba will also be screened.

LAWN TENNIS.- The annual mee7ng of Moruya Lawn Tennis Club was held in the Shire Hall on Monday, 19th April. …….The Secretary men7oned that the past year was a record one for the Lawn Tennis Club as regards matches, prac7ce and general interest. Matches were played with Narooma, The Heads, Mogo, Eurobodalla, Nerrigundah, Bodalla and Convent Clubs. Moruya Club won on every occasion excep7ng one…… The following officers were elected: President, Mr. S. Bas7an; Vice Presidents, Messrs. F. Knight and W. Jermyn; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr. C. Carter; CommiFee- Mrs Ison, Mrs Simpson, Mrs Cheesman, Messrs. C. Selden and R. Dixon; Selec7on CommiFee – C. Carter, C. Selden, Mrs Simpson and Mrs Ison.

STEAMER AUGHINISH. A diver’s inves7ga7on of the steamer Aughinish showed that a piece of rope was embedded in the torn plates of the steamer’s boFom, clearly proving that the steamer had struck some submerged wreckage.

FATAL ACCIDENT.- An accident occurred on Tuesday, through which the death of Mr. C. Rootsey, of Queen Street was caused. The unfortunate man was returning home with his horse and cart, & when within a few yards of his own gate the horse suddenly stopped, precipita7ng the driver onto the metalled road. On examina7on Dr. Quilter found that the spine had been injured and gave no hope of recovery. The vic7m lingered un7l Thursday evening, when he peacefully passed “Out Beyond” surrounded by his grief-stricken wife and family. Deceased who was only 61 years of age leaves a widow and four children.

TURLINJAH. (From our Correspondent) On Wednesday evening, 14th inst. another returned soldier in the person of Sergeant Knox M.M. was accorded a “Welcome Home” in the Coila-Turlinjah Hall. Sergeant Knox, who is a Military Medallist and has also been recommended for the Victoria Cross, is a na7ve of Coila, though it is many years (over three of which he spent on ac7ve service), since his departure from the district. The hall was very pre]ly decorated with flags and greenery, and reflected the greatest credit on the ar7s7c skill of the two capable and energe7c secretaries, Mesdames T. Davis and E. Bown.

Sergeant Knox entered the Hall to the singing of “Home Sweet Home,” which ended with bursts of cheering. Dancing was then commenced to music supplied by Mr. R. Hawdon (clarionet) and Messrs Marsden and Worland (cornet and violin).

Your Up to Date fishing report from the team at Tackle World Moruya Moruya River 15th 2017 Vol 16 September 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 111 July 12th 2018 2019 The river fishing has definitely seFled with the cooling water temps this last week. The estuary perch con7nue to be an op7on off the bridge with a run out 7de aEer dark. SoE plas7cs and Jackson BoFom Magic’s in the 55mm size producing the goods. There are s7ll a few good flathead and bream around the airport flats, with baits and lures s7ll managing to tempt a few fish. Further upstream around the hospital, baits and soE plas7cs worked in the deeper channels offer the chance to tempt a good estuary perch or bream. Whi7ng could also be found in these deeper holes as well.

Tuross River The fishing in this system, like Moruya, has started to quieten down. The lower sec7ons of the river have con7nued to see most of the ac7on. With flathead and bream offering the greatest chance of being caught.

Baits and lures are all s7ll working. With the river mouth flowing well, and the water temps star7ng to fall, hopefully a few salmon will start to take up residence in the lower river. These provide lots of fun on both light spin gear and also fly gear. Fingers crossed we get some taking up posi7on in the river. One of my customers reported being biFen off three 7mes aEer big runs down on Preddy’s wharf this week. A good size shark was the most likely suspect, but whilst no sigh7ng was made, he will always be guessing as to the species.

Rock and beach These areas are offering the best chance of a fish at the moment. Salmon and tailor on the beaches, whilst drummer and luderick are star7ng to hold up off the rocks and the breakwall. James, from one of our local coffee shops managed a few luderick on fly before being dusted up and losing the only weed fly he had on him. He also reported good drummer in the crystal clear waters as well as a few salmon. The drummer can be tempted on bread or peeled prawns, while the luderick can be tempted on weed suspended under a float.

Offshore The captures of good flathead and snapper con7nue this week with fish coming in from as liFle as 15m of water, with the beFer fish coming in from the 40m mark. Expect the bigger snapper to become more prevalent with the dropping water temps. Out wide around Moruya and Tuross canyons XL Yellowfin Tuna are being caught with great reports of fish up to 80 kilo being caught on surface s7ck baits so hopefully the weather gods will be good while the fish are around so you can get out to chase them.
