editorial This week’s editorial might be considered pre@y blunt but it needs to be to get through to the powers that be that things are definitely not Bckety boo in the South East.

So here is a message to any visiBng poliBcian, any head of department or anybody who will bother listening.

Welcome to the Eurobodalla region. Hope you bought your esky full of supplies and dunny paper because we have bugger all to offer while the madness of panic buying conBnues.

In case you were wondering why we have so many oldies it is because, as per the last census, Eurobodalla Shire has a lower proporBon of children (under 18) and the highest proporBon of persons aged 60 or older in NSW. With a populaBon of just 37,000 we have 15,000 who are older than 60 and we have 6,500 children.

That leaves 13,000 people employed and 48% of them part-Bme. In the 2019 September quarter our unemployment rate was 8.1% compared to a Regional NSW rate of 4.7%.

Unemployment was recorded at 1,320. What isn’t recorded is the numbers of residents under-employed, unable to find 38 hours per week, being most of the 48% part Bme workers. The staBsBcs for residents on the pension, disability allowance and Newstart in the South East clearly reiterate that ours is a social security boosted community. As such there is li@le disposable income but just enough to hopefully keep local businesses afloat.

IrrespecBve of these figures everyone in September 2019 was reasonably posiBve. Summer was on the way and the annual influx of visitors would help liL the region out of its fourth quarter of local recession.

Shopping, buying, giLs, food, services. Everyone ready with supplies ordered and premises prepared. 13.8% of our workforce are in retail, a sector which has taken a nose dive locally in the order of $20m over the last five years. Fortunately to offset that downturn was the increase of $52m to the growing Health Care and Social Assistance that out performs the rest of NSW. In a nutshell we have a predominantly older demographic who have low incomes and are serviced by a small workforce that is under-employed on lower than average incomes. community depends on tourism. These come in short, sharp, peak periods. Hopefully they spend enough to put away a few acorns for winter.

Our tourism industry needed a good summer. Then came the fires. Not just one, but two. Major, Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017and devastaBng fires. The impact to our local economy was massive. Tourists were unprecedented, deadly Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 turned away, then invited back, only to be turned away again as the fires conBnued around them.

While there has been recovery monies on offer to those businesses who were physically affected by flame this criteria for eligibility meant that many of our 2900 businesses who were ‘only’ financially impacted received nothing other than an invitaBon to take out a loan to buy themselves out of the pit of having zero income.

Social security opBons were offered, vouchers, cash handouts for families of businesses but nothing by way of any contribuBon towards loss of earnings. Rents were sBll required, loan payments were sBll due, suppliers sBll needed to be paid, electricity, phone, water and overheads conBnued and then there was staff.

The firestorm created a chaos like we could never have imagined Time lingered on. The recovery process had halted. Burnt material was not being removed. No block clearing meant no moving forward for 500 home sites. Paperwork, more paperwork and red tape wrapped it all up so Bght that very li@le has been done…. Moving forward in baby steps….

But everyone had hopes. It would just be a ma@er of Bme. PaBence. Visitors were invited back. The naBonal media put a spotlight on the region. Bring your Eskys, LoveNSW, came and visit, stay a while, buy stuff. The Canberra long-weekend was a bumper. And then…. The Virus.

What took the fires a month to destroy by way of tourism has taken the Covid-19 virus just a few days aLer announcements of closing down large gatherings. The announcement dominoed across the region with one cancellaBon aLer another of major and minor events.

Easter is just around the corner and the cancellaBons for holiday accommodaBon in the South East are acceleraBng. News driLs out of the shire that events have closed and that we have the same panic buying as elsewhere … so you’d best bring your own toilet paper.

As the coronavirus takes Australia into its first recession in 30 years, people across the country will lose their jobs and unemployment will shoot up from its current NaBonal rate 5.3% to levels not seen in decades.

And here we are in Eurobodalla already recording 8.1% at the last census, long before the fires, the four quarters of local recession, the closures, the empty shops and the impact of the internet on retail. And now we have the virus to confront.

The triple whammy of fires, floods and now pesBlence have affected each and all of us with more impact to come. While there are recovery packages for some most will receive nothing. We approach winter with streets already empty and long months ahead. It will take an effort from all of us to get through this. CollecBvely we might have a chance. So long as our leaders truly recognise the enormity of the task ahead for the South East so that we are not forgo@en or overlooked. Take care.

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Assessment Clinics Southern NSW Local Health District has established COVID-19 Assessment Clinics throughout the District, so those with symptoms may be tested and treated quickly.

Any one heading to an assessment centre MUST call the SNSWLHD Central Intake Service – 1800 999 880 (opBon 1) before a@ending.

The purpose of these clinics is for people who have respiratory symptoms or fever and who are at risk of COVID-19, for example because they were in contact with a COVID-19 case, or have returned from overseas in the 14 days before onset of symptoms.

Recovery centres remain open Vol 16 SeptemberBushfire 15th 2017 Eurobodalla’s 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 27th 111April JulyCentre 12th 2018 2019 Recovery in Batemans

Bay and the Recovery Point in Narooma will remain open for the Bme being, although with reduced hours from this Saturday.

While COVID-19 requirements limit indoor gatherings to under 100 people, the NSW Office of Emergency Management and Council consider the recovery centres an essenBal service for residents needing bushfire recovery support and informaBon. One of the busiest recovery centres in New South Wales, Batemans Bay has registered nearly 5,000 households for assistance since opening on 15 January.

The Narooma Recovery Point has been supporBng residents with essenBal recovery informaBon since February, and is also proving popular with residents from Bega Valley’s north.

The centres are managed by Council in collaboraBon with NSW Government departments. Staff there can help idenBfy the right financial, housing and emoBonal support, get applicaBon processes started and answer quesBons.

Reduced opening hours will allow the recovery teams to begin placing a greater focus on outreach services to impacted communiBes. Council will announce the outreach schedule late next week.

Those visiBng the recovery centres are asked to follow Australian Government health warnings to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Please pracBce social distancing and stay 1.5 metres from others, and don’t visit the centres if you have cold or fever symptoms, if you’ve had contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case, or returned from overseas in the past 14 days.

The Recovery Centre is located at the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club and the Recovery Point at Narooma Golf Club. Both are currently open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. ALer Saturday 21 March, hours will be reduced to Wednesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm at Batemans Bay, and Monday to Thursday, 10am to 4pm at Narooma. Residents can also call the Service NSW Bushfire Customer Care service on 13 77 88.

A history of Framefast by Wayne Toms.

Framefast was an extension of the business Photofast that was a photo processing laboratory in Anne@es Arcade established in 1980 by Wayne and Carol Toms with partners Ross and Trish Bri@. When Photofast moved to 1 Orient Street in 1983 a framing operaBon was started in the arcade shop to frame and mount and laminate portraiture and aerial photo's.

With the closing of Jed Laurence's art gallery in North Street the framing secBon was established there and called Framefast .

The business expanded and Greg Caldwell was employed as manager and later purchased the business.

ALer several years Greg sold out to the current owner Cliff. ALer all these years it is a sorry day to see it closed.

Locals to receive energy bill relief thanks to Powershop customers Vol 16 September 15th 2017

Bushfire affected locals 28 December 7th, 2017in the South East are set to receive Vol 48 27th 111April July 12th 2018 2019 credits on their bills thanks to the generous support from Powershop customers who have parBcipated in their Power it Forward campaign and raised more than $185,000.

Powershop CEO, Jason Stein said that aLer the devastaBon of the bushfires, Powershop wanted to offer its support. "In the midst of the bushfire disaster, we’re devastated to see the impact on people, communiBes, habitat and wildlife. As a starBng point, Powershop had donated $25,000 to the Red Cross and $25,000 to the WWF bushfire appeals to support communiBes and wildlife and offered a $100 credit to customers who were volunteer firefighters and SES volunteers."

Next came the iniBaBve to provide an opportunity for their customers to support impacted communiBes. “On the 10th of January this year, we launched the Power It Forward Powerpack, allowing our customers to support Powershoppers affected by the bushfires simply by purchasing power. This gave Powershop customers across the country an opportunity to help pay the bills of customers in bushfire affected regions.”

Jason said.

The 'Power It Forward' Powerpack includes a 6.6c/kWh premium, which is pooled and credited (excluding GST) to the electricity accounts of customers who are in bushfire impacted communiBes. “To kick start the fund Powershop contributed $20,000 to the pool and we have been blown away with the generosity of our customers. We set an ambiBous target of $150,000 that we hoped would be achieved by the end of March. However, in only 35 days our customers hit our $150,000 target and to date we have raised more than $185,000.

“This will go directly towards the electricity bills of Powershop customers across 265 postcodes that have been impacted by the bushfires.” Jason added.

Powershop also has a range of support opBons available for customers impacted by the bushfires including puZng bills on hold, account payment help and bushfire relief offers.

Cancella/on of the Four Winds Easter Fes/val With sadness and regret we have decided not to go ahead with the 2020 Easter Fes/val in Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Bermagui because COVID-19 which was 28 December 7th, of 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 categorised as a pandemic by the World Health OrganisaBon on 11 March.

Our primary concern is public safety. We are parBcularly concerned about the risks to:  the many people who make up our loyal audience  our inspiring musicians who travel to Four Winds from around Australia and from overseas  our wonderful staff and volunteers who do so much to make the FesBval a success our supporBve local community On Friday 13th March the Federal Government issued advice against non-essenBal gatherings of 500 people or more and many events around the world are being cancelled for fear that the virus will be easily transmi@ed among large crowds.

Given the public health advice, we have come to the decision that the risks are too high for Four Winds 2020 Easter FesBval to go ahead. We cannot jus/fy holding an event that might put people who travel to the Fes/val as well as those who live in the area at risk.

We are acutely aware that the Easter FesBval not going ahead will be another body-blow to local businesses as well as to the many free-lance musicians and contractors involved in the FesBval. Many local businesses provide services, accommodaBon, food and hospitality to our audience members and musicians. Typically, the Four Winds audience spends up to $1 million in Bermagui so loss of this economic boost, on top of the catastrophic financial impact of the bush-fires will contribute to the ongoing challenges local businesses are facing.

However, we are confident that this is the right decision for the health and wellbeing of all involved in the FesBval, even though it will certainly have a significant negaBve financial impact on Four Winds. We are esBmaBng this to be in the region of $130,000, which equates to loss of box office income and costs incurred to date.

Some good news!

The majority of arBsts booked for the 2020 Easter FesBval have told us that they are willing to come and perform at Easter 2021.

Therefore, we are postponing the 2020 ar/s/c program and it will be presented in 2021 – when we will celebrate our 21st Fes/val.

Four Winds always presents a free concert for the community as our first major FesBval event. This year the content of that performance is inspired by the tradiBonal Indigenous stories of the region, as a response to Captain Cook’s sighBng of the East Coast of Australia, 250 years ago.

That performance will now take place on Friday 13 November 2020 at the opening of the 2020 Spring Youth Fes/val in November and forms part of the NaBonal Museum of Australia’s Cultural ConnecBons Program.

REX announces reduc/ons to flights As foreshadowed in our earlier media release, Regional Express (Rex) has finalised the first stage of network reducBons with effect from Monday 6 April 2020.

Weekly return services between Moruya and Sydney have each been reduced from 19 to 12.

Overall, Rex will be reducing capacity by 45% which includes suspending three routes. Rex's General Manager of Network Strategy & Sales, Warrick Lodge, said, "The operaBng environment is extremely fluid and we will be monitoring the situaBon closely. If the situaBon worsens we may be forced to further reduce capacity in the interests of maintaining essenBal regional air services."

"This capacity reducBon alone will not be enough and we have reached out to local councils (airport owners) to seek a reducBon in airport charges to keep operaBng costs to a bare minimum so that the reduced services can be sustainable.

Rex is appreciaBve of the hear]elt support of many councils, like Parkes Shire Council, who proacBvely approached Rex in the spirit of partnership to grant a total waiver of airport charges during Rex’s hour of need. Rex promises to also stand by these local councils in their moment of adversity when Rex is solidly back on its feet."

Beach monitoring sees ci/zen science a snap Vol 16 September 15th 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019

Eurobodalla has joined the CoastSnap family. The ciBzen science project has beach-goers across the country and around the world using their mobile phones to collect images used by coastal scienBsts to assess the health of beaches.

Eurobodalla Council has installed two CoastSnap staBons – one at Melville Point, Tomakin and the other at South Broulee lookout – where visitors can snap a picture of the beach and share it on CoastSnap social media pages.

Over Bme the images are compiled to capture a long-term Bme lapse of each beach, which is analysed by scienBsts from the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage and the University of NSW Water Research Laboratory.

The resulBng data is an addiBonal tool for agencies involved in coastal management, and Cr James Thomson suggested CoastSnap as a resource that could help Council be@er understand Eurobodalla’s beaches.

Council’s coastal and flood management planner Cameron WhiBng said it was a great opportunity for the community and visitors to get involved in a ciBzen science project that started in Australia and had since gone global.

“It’s easy to get involved,” he said.

“Put your phone in the cradle, camera facing out through the gap, screen facing you, and snug it up against the leL side.

“Then take a standard photo – no zoom or filter. Remove your phone then share your photo to Facebook, Instagram or Twi@er using the appropriate hashtag: #coastsnaptomakin or #coastsnapbroulee.

“If you’re not on socials, you can also email the photo to coast.snap@environment.nsw.gov.au.”

At the Far South Coast Group Land/Cookery Day, held at Bermagui Sports Club on Tuesday 10th March, the talented members items brought home the trophy for top scoring in branch items compeBBon. Marion Cullen Narooma branch HandicraL Officer delighted in receiving trophy from FSCG HandicraL Officer Rhonda Byrnes . Mary Conley received Top award for her hardanger piece, with Pauline Co@erill being awarded best item in compeBBon. Such talented ladies meet Friday mornings 10am -noon at Narooma CWA and are willing to introduce you to new handicraL, help with current projects or just chat while you work. The cookery entrants were not successful and these were sent to give Blazeaid workers something to have with their cuppas.

Since there are less than 500 people that a@end the Narooma CWA Easter Saturday garage sale, we will be going ahead this year. Beaches geEng back to beau/ful best Vol 16 September 15th 2017

Eurobodalla’s famous beaches are geZng back to their 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 2018 111April July 27th 12th 2019 beauBful best aLer a summer marked by bushďŹ res followed by heavy rain.

While some beaches, and parBcularly those close to river mouths, sBll have ďŹ re debris washed from creeks and rivers, the majority are clearing naturally. Council's manager of environmental services Deb Lenson said while both Council and the NSW NaBonal Parks and Wildlife Service would conBnue to monitor the situaBon, it was usually best to let nature take its own course.

With 143 kilometres of coastline, Ms Lenson said it was again easy to ďŹ nd a safe spot to surf, swim or beachcomb. “Only a couple of beaches are sBll being impacted, mainly near the river mouths at Tuross and Moruya, as well as Mystery Bay,â€? she said. “Most of the beaches at Batemans Bay and Narooma now look good.â€?

Given the extent of this summer’s bushďŹ res, Ms Lenson said Council and state agencies were monitoring estuaries and beaches to see what the impact would be. “We’ve never had anything like this before, so we don’t know how long it will take for the environment to fully recover,â€? she said. “At the moment we are seeing our beaches recovering and looking forward to them returning to their usual prisBne state.â€?

Council will conBnue to regularly test water quality as part of its usual monitoring programs but advises residents and visitors to avoid swimming aLer heavy rain as a ma@er of course.

Princes Highway upgrade community informa/on sessions moved online Transport for NSW is following NSW Health advice relaBng to social distancing and has moved community informaBon sessions for the Jervis Bay Road intersecBon upgrade, Milton Ulladulla bypass and Moruya bypass projects online. Transport for NSW Regional Director Southern, Jo Parro@, said a face-to-face format was not feasible in the current environment.

Body of second man found aDer boat capsized - Narooma The body of a man Vol 16 September 15thhas 2017been located on the state’s 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 2018 111coast, July 27th 12th 2019 south aLer a boat capsized early last week.

Shortly aLer 6.15am on Tuesday 10 March 2020, two men launched their boat at Apex Park boat ramp, Narooma, before it capsized navigaBng the Narooma Bar. One of the men, a 75-year-old, was retrieved from the water and members of the public performed CPR on him before emergency services arrived.

Despite their efforts, the man died at the scene.

Officers a@ached to the Marine Area Command commenced a search for a 32-year-old man.

The search effort included officers from South Coast Police District, Marine Rescue, Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Surf Lifesaving Australia.

About 7.30am today (Wednesday 18 March 2020), the body of the 32-year-old man was located approximately 200m offshore by a member of the public near Glasshouse Rocks, Narooma.

Police and NSW MariBme a@ended and the body was brought to shore. The body was formally idenBfied as that of the missing 32-year-old man.

A report will be prepared for the informaBon of the Coroner.

Mr MarBn said the ďŹ res and subsequent oods that swept across the region laid soil bare in many areas across Eurobodalla.

The increased light, water and nutrients have created condiBons which are perfect for colonizing plants, especially weeds,â€? he said. “In the Bega Valley to our south, African love grass is coming up as never before; it’s been lying in wait for some kind of disturbance and now ourishing in the absence of pasture. Parthenium weed can spread like wildďŹ re with devastaBng consequences to local agriculture if not contained and eradicated quickly.â€?

In less troubled times, Mark Willacy’s Four Corners report on the appalling actions and ethos of a group of Australia’s SAS operatives in Afghanistan would have dominated the Vol 16 September 15th 2017

headlines.

For those 28 December 7th,who 2017missed it, the episode, Killing Fields revealed in the starkest detail the Vol 48 27th 2018 111April July 12th 2019 ‘murder’ of a young, unarmed Afghan after his capture by a special forces soldier, and aired plausible allegations of war crimes within the regiment.

As the author of three biographies of SAS soldiers – two of whom I still regard as good friends – I was appalled but not really surprised. Two of the three are now PTSD sufferers, though only one admits it. All three – for different reasons - are enraged by the report. But they all agree that it’s one thing to view the actions from the comfort of our lounge chairs, quite another to be there at the time, fighting to stay alive, mourning mates, hating the Afghans and deep down knowing that the whole war was about as phoney as it gets.

They could see the poppy fields; they could see and hear the ‘good guy’ Afghans – those ones on our side - doing their deals to harvest the opium. They knew it was headed to the gaping maw of the American appetite for illicit drugs. And they knew that it was damn near impossible to tell who was Taliban and who was a passive supporter. Most telling of all, they knew that one big element of their job was to assassinate – that is, murder - leaders of the ‘bad guys’.

So how and where, may I ask, do they calibrate their moral compass?

Oh sure, there’s the code of behaviour, The Law of Armed Conflict, that they’ve sworn to abide. What a pity there’s no Taliban equivalent; for them it’s ‘Whatever it takes, and the dirtier the better.’

I am not trying to excuse the men who Willacy displayed doing rotten things. On the contrary, I’m simply saying that this is what happens when your government trains young, malleable men to be killers and sends them off to war.

The problem is not the men, it’s the war and the government that chooses – from their comfy seats around the Cabinet table – to put them in mortal danger.

Because if the coronavirus can teach us anything, it’s that as humans, we are one huge family and the geographic boundaries we laud as ‘nation states’ can be a toxic disease quite as deadly as anything thrown up by swine fever, avian flu or the bats of Wuhan. There’s a fascinating symbolism at work when Anzac Day ‘celebrations’ are abandoned in the face of Covid-19.

It would be nice to think that we’d take the right lesson from it, but I fear not. Already, the propagandists are hinting at ‘Chinese plot’, if not as the initiators of the virus (‘It started in China,’ said Scott Morrison in his nationwide address) then certainly in their daring to offer help to other countries now that they have it under control within their own population. What they’re really up to, we’re told, is using their ‘soft power’ to extend their influence over the victims of the disease.

Forget that the entire medical research community is working together to create a vaccine. Forget that next time – from some other quarter - it will be even more deadly. Instead, it now looks like there will be a retreat to insularity and protectionism so that in future we’ll be more comfy in our own little patch, more ‘self-sufficient’ in medical masks and… whatever.

Narooma and the1919 Inuenza pandemic

Soldiers returning 28 December 7th,from 2017the First World War Vol 48 111April July 27th 12th 2018 2019 ba@leďŹ elds of Europe in 1918-1919 took home the highly contagious and someBmes fatal ‘Spanish’ inuenza.

It mainly spread where people were concentrated in areas, such as the mass movement of men in armies and aboard ships. It then spread quickly around the world even to remote areas. Unlike most inuenzas, it could develop quickly with people someBmes waking up ďŹ ne in the morning but dying by nigh]all.

Tight quaranBne restricBons by the edgling Australian Government to prevent the virus from entering Australia ulBmately failed. The ďŹ rst diagnosed case was in NSW in January 1919. In Sydney, public gatherings were restricted, schools and Sydney University closed, while pubs opened for short periods at a Bme. Victory parades were cancelled and it was compulsory for people to wear masks on public transport or face heavy ďŹ nes.

CommuniBes in country NSW prepared for the inevitable and made their own quaranBne arrangements, usually on local medical advice. Narooma’s main community venue the School of Arts was closed from February as a precauBon. Many country shows were postponed because of both severe drought and inuenza fears, including Cobargo’s usually held mid-March.

Inuenza reached Bega in early June following a visit by a Bega man to a conference in Sydney. Bermagui soon followed.

A public meeBng in Narooma on 25 June decided the School of Arts hall (the original one, part of which is now Narooma Newsagency) would become the emergency hospital. Dr Birmingham, who had recently established a hospital opposite, supervised its conversion and Mitchell’s Mill provided labour. The hall was parBBoned into two wards equipped by residents. Mr and Mrs Dawson Hansen took charge while Matron McLachlan of Narooma Hospital trained volunteer nurses.

Two days later, three quarrymen building the Inlet’s training walls were admi@ed. Within days there were 20 paBents, peaking at 35. Narooma residents wore masks in public areas and the school closed for several weeks.

By the end of June, Spanish Inuenza had also reached Cobargo and Moruya.

Narooma’s Volunteer Aid Detachments (VADs) were locals Queenie CosBn, Queenie Fuller, Amy Woolle@, EZe and LoZe Fuller, Dorothy ‘Dos’ O’Connor, Eileen and Alice Lynch, Dolly CosBn, Edith Wood and Alma Jones. Eileen Lynch did the cooking and some laundry.

John Hyland of Narooma Hotel placed his horse and ‘vehicle’ and motor car at the Red Cross’ disposal, and his hotel laundered gowns, masks and uniforms. Residents helped by ‘sending cooked viands, linen, milk, literature’ and other requirements. reading nursing gowns, George Fuller potatoes and turnips, Herbert Snell and Thomas Barker wood. Constable Barry supplied bed clothing and pyjamas and was ‘on duty day and night’, as were leading local businessmen John McMillan and Carl Mitchell.

Four returned Vol 16 September 15th 2017soldiers were wardsmen; Ned Lynch 28 December 7th, 2017 chopped wood.

Vol 48 27th 111April July 12th 2018 2019 Four died. James Giltron of Cremorne and teamster Edward Heycox of Narooma died in hospital, while Mrs Dawson Hansen and Mrs Amelia Lynch died at home.

By 2 August 1919, ‘the dreaded epidemic’ had leL Narooma and the Emergency Hospital had been closed a week.

Meanwhile influenza arrived in Central Tilba on 13 July, brought in by George Ling who had come to work at the recently opened granite quarry. His fellow workers quickly became infected as well as their families and friends.

Cr H J Bate’s ‘commodious’ Red House at Tilba Tilba became Tilba’s emergency hospital. A 15-man working party quickly organised the Red House to receive paBents with 22 beds in large airy wards.

The Spanish Influenza pandemic of 19181919 killed more people than the First World War which killed an es/mated 18 million worldwide – 11 million military personnel and 7 million civilians. It is regarded as the biggest natural disaster in recorded history; es/mates of deaths worldwide vary from 20- 40 million to 50100 million people.

Australia’s popula/on in 1919 was 5 million.

During the War 416,809 people enlisted, 60,000 of whom were killed.

Spanish Influenza infected possibly up to 2 million Australians. An es/mated 13,00015,000 died but it was possibly more because many deaths in remote communi/es, par/cularly Aboriginal, were unrecorded.

Two trained nurses Verrender (in charge) and Motbey were employed for the duraBon; Verrender had assisted earlier at Bermagui. Lieut Godfrey from Bermagui came across as a volunteer a@endant with Jack Horne as wardsman. Mrs John McFaul of Henkley took up residence to do the cooking and housework, assisted by Miss Fookes. Funds were raised to support the hospital and van loads of food were donated by locals. ABC factory manager Alex Livingstone used his car as the ambulance. Dr Lister a@ended daily with no one else permi@ed to enter the grounds.

By 17 July, there were 15 cases. Ling iniBally refused to leave the Palace Hotel (now the Dromedary) where he was staying but was eventually carried to the ‘hospital’ on Dr Lister’s orders. As soon as illness was reported, paBents were moved to the hospital to minimise the spread of infecBon, yet several paBents stayed on at the Palace Hotel. By 24 July, 40 paBents had been treated, including nine in their own homes.

Through this period, Tilba was ‘dead’ with no sports or other social events; everyone staying home.

The Age of Anxiety—a review by Trevor Moore Pete Townshend, Coronet, 2020, 265pp, ISBN 9-781-473-62294-4 They say things come in threes. I am not sure who “they” are but whoever they are they Vol 16 September 15th qualified the type of 2017 things that come in threes. Bad things apparently come in threes.

There’s a website called The Book of Threes that proclaims that “something, nothing, and everything comes in threes”.

It purports to be the largest collecBon of all things three. I am wriBng about this because of three parBcular events that happened to me each of which involved Pete Townshend who is, as you all know, the guitarist with The Who. The first was, as you may have seen in an earlier arBcle in The Beagle, in which I expressed my amazement that it was 50 years ago since The Who’s seminal Live At Leeds album.

Just aLer I wrote the Live At Leeds piece I had a long exchange with my good friend Macman. We found ourselves needing urgently to address the quesBon of what is the greatest bass line ever played in a rock song. I tossed in Tina Weymouth’s bass on Talking Head’s Psycho Killer. Macman came back with Pink Floyd’s Money. And back and forth we went unBl Macman sent me a playlist by Steve Kilbey who the bassist for The Church. He had five songs on high rotaBon and fiLh on the list was Overture which opens 1969’s brilliant rock opera Tommy. I hadn’t listened to this for several decades and as Kilbey himself remarks it is “sBll jawdroopingly good aLer 51 years.”

The third of this parBcular set of three things happened when I visited Moruya Books to relieve some recent heavy reading through the acquisiBon of a novel or two. My eyes alighted on The Age of Anxiety by some author called Pete Townshend. There’s a small picture on the back of the author and a glance confirmed that he was indeed our special friend; the Pete Townshend. It was the work of a moment to add the book to the heap. ALer all the man who wrote Pinball Wizard would surely be able to write a half decent novel. And it is a half decent novel – in fact, it’s more than half decent.

The novel is narrated through the voice of an art dealer called Louis Doxtader. It is pre@y clear early on that Doxtader is Townshend. There’s a notable autobiographical angle to the book. Doxtader is well-acquainted with the business of rock music. He’s a recovering heroin addict. At one point he writes “drugs had opened a door for me too, and slowly, as that door had closed, I se@led down to live a more normal life. But I could not forget what I had seen, what I had experienced.”

The novel is based on Townshend’s inclinaBon to push the boundaries, in this case the boundaries of rock music. There’s a frustraBon that comes through; clearly Townshend believes that rock music needs to develop further, in new and different ways. That’s what he has spent his career doing. Yet in his heart I think he recognises that his age and youth culture may be against him. The true innovator is a young person.

In his art dealing Doxtader has formed a business relaBonship with an arBst and former rock star, Nik. Nik has been having disturbing episodes both visual aural. As it turns out he shares this problem with Doxtader’s godson, Walter, is also a rock star (you can see the autobiographical theme) who sings and plays the mouthorgan (an odd choice of instrument, but perhaps Townshend is making some point that is beyond me) with his band Big Walter and His Stand, known to its fans as The Stand. Walter decides to cope with his problems by taking a 15-year break and building a maze before eventually pushing his music to a new level.

The weak aspect of the novel lies in the development, and the treatment, of its female characters. There are three: Doxtader’s daughter, Rain, and two sisters, Siobhan and Selena. These women seem to be props for the acBons and desires of the male characters. They are support actors.

On the whole, however, the novel romps along in an easy-to-read and engaging style. I was not disappointed to have bought the book and not disappointed to have read it. It is not a great novel, but it is just about a good one. I suspect you would read this if you like stories about rock musicians and if you want to read one that is wri@en by a rock star and if you are a Pete Townshend fan. Your Up to Date fishing report from the team at Tackle World Moruya Moruya River Improving with15th every day that passes. With no notable rain falls this week, the river is starBng to clear up.

Vol 16 September 2017 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 111 July 12th 2019 The upper secBons around Yarragee are sBll running fairly fresh, with the water clear but very tannin stained. As the fresh run off eases up from the catchment, these secBons will salt up again. This has the fish pushed down in the system. Under the bridge good flathead can be found on a Bde that peaks aLer dark.

Estuary perch and the ever-present bream will also be found. Jackson Bo@om Magic’s, Berkeley pumpkin seed coloured Gulps and metal blades, can all account for their fair share of fish.

Further down the system schools of tailor have been seen busBng up on schools of small bait fish. Small metals cast through the bust ups can be a way to tempt these fish. Good numbers of bream and flathead sBll conBnue to be caught in and around Preddy’s wharf and the hole in the wall, while further down the system flathead can be found in the channels on a run out Bde. While out in the Bnny last weekend, it was amazing to see how quickly the areas around Mogendoura and Yarragee are greening up aLer the fires went through. The up-side to all this fresh water is that the bass have made a come back in the upper reaches of the river. Good catches and more than a few “smokings” have been reported. Shallow to mid diving hard body lures such as Atomic Cranks, Jackson Athletes, TT 1/8oz spinnerbaits, flies and soL plasBcs will all catch this enigmaBc and hard fighBng naBve. Tuross River On fire at the moment, was one anglers descripBon of fishing in this system at the moment, provided you get the Bming right! Good tailor, trevally, bream and flathead have all been reported busBng up on prawn schools that have exploded in the system since the flush out. ALer dark has been the Bme to get out and target these fish, as soon as the sun goes down, the fish have been coming on. All manner of techniques have been working, but if some live prawns can be caught, I’m pre@y confident that a good Bme can be had. Up in the fresh, the bass should also be making a come-back in this system.

Rock and beach The Moruya wall has been “going off” to quote one of our regular anglers this week. With literally hundreds of tonnes of salmon on the coast at the moment, dozens of salmon per session have been landed by a few lucky anglers as well as some really good sized trevally being taken on whole pilchards.

Surprisingly, at Bmes, there have only been a few anglers on the wall enjoying the hot bite. Come down and visit, get out on the wall and enjoy some fresh air, space, sunshine and screaming drags for yourselves.

If the wall does get a bit crowded, the beaches also conBnue to produce good catches of salmon as well.

The bream and whiBng are also available in the close gu@ers on lighter gear. Expect the odd salmon to be tempted by the lighter presentaBons also, hold on and enjoy the fight. The wind sock has a really nice gu@er at the moment, as will the other beaches along the coast.

OffshoreInshore grounds have been producing good numbers of flathead and reef species in 30-40m of water, with the snapper holding out wider. We haven’t heard from any game crews this week, so I am unaware what has been happening wider out in regards to marlin etc.
