Why did we send you this Guide?

They say human beings are “social animals,” and that deprived of human contact, we wither away. But what are we to do in an age when social distancing can be a matter of life and death?

Fortunately, we humans are also highly creative and resourceful, so there are many answers to that question: We hold FaceTime or Zoom conversations, virtual events, and small-scale, outdoor gatherings as best we can.

If I were to ask you how much these substitutes feel like the real thing, what would you say? Would your answer be, “It’s the best we can do under the circumstances,” “It’s almost as good as it used to be,” or “Actually, in some ways it’s better than it used to be”?

I know I’ve been in situations these last few months where I came away with each of these feelings. Certainly, attending a wedding, anniversary and other family celebrations via a computer screen, without all the hugs and kisses, personal conversations and shared experiences, can be

painful. It’s just not the same.

Attending a networking event or business conference can have some of the same downsides, but also saves one the time, expense and aggravation of air travel, staying in hotels and living out of a suitcase.

There’s more of a balance there.

So, what’s an example of something that’s actually better virtually? I’m going out on a limb here, but I’m going to say that 50+Expos might be such a situation.

The Beacon has hosted live Expos for our readers and their families for more than 20 years. For me, it almost feels like a family gathering now. There are so many familiar faces I get to see only once a year, and so many lovely conversations I get to have with our readers as well as our exhibitors and wonderful speakers.

So, I certainly wouldn’t have asked for this year to be one where we couldn’t in good conscience hold an in-person expo event.

But the more we at the Beacon thought about it, the more we realized there could really be some huge benefits to having an Expo virtually.

First, there’s the time issue: An in-person Expo event takes place over a day; two at most. If you’re not available at that time, or aren’t feeling your best, you miss it.

Our Virtual Expo lets you visit every class, speaker, performer and exhibitor whenever you want for a full three months! (And we are holding weekly door prizes for each week’s visitors, so you’re not missing out on that nice aspect of live Expos, either. Come back and enter as many weeks as you like.)

Then, there’s the space issue. No matter how big the convention center (or tent), we’re going to have some trouble fitting in all the entertainment, speakers and classes we’d like to offer, while still leaving room for an exhibit hall of any significant size.

With a web-based Expo, there’s nothing stopping us from providing all the interesting subjects and types of entertainment you could possibly want to enjoy.

And if you’ve been accustomed to attending many different 50+Expos around the area, you’ll be glad to know we are partnering with both the Baltimore County Department of Aging and the Howard County Office on Aging & Independence, each of which have held their own popular 50+Expos for decades. Attend the 2020 Virtual 50+Expo, and you’ll find the best of all these events rolled into one.

Starting November 1 at noon, you can visit www.beacon50expo.com. You’ll find a very simple, user-friendly web page with four main choices: Classes, Speakers, Entertainers and Exhibitors.

Click on any one of them and you’ll see a few categories to choose among to help you decide which video to view first. Altogether, there will be literally dozens of programs available to you to start and stop any time of day or night for a full three months.

Okay, you might say, I can surf the internet for three centuries and not see everything there is to offer. What’s the point of that?

The difference is, we have pulled together the information and material you have told us you most want to see. The hundreds of readers who answered our survey back in July gave us direction that we have done our best to follow.

Our hope is that we have done a good enough job to make it worth your while to come once, twice, maybe even many times to the Virtual 50+Expo site in the coming weeks and months.

Resident Stories Loving Life at Maplewood

Paul and Sally Schlein met on a blind date in 1963 at the Iron Gate Inn in Washington, D.C. A second date followed, at the Mayflower Hotel for dancing and dinner. “I’m not sure how I pulled that one off,” Paul says. “I was a resident physician making $160 a month.” A year later, they were married and living in Bethesda. In 2017, they sold the house where they’d lived for 44 years. Destination: Maplewood Park Place.

“I had lots of reasons for wanting a change,” Sally says. “We knew people who’d grown old on their own, and they’d struggled. We’d been in good health, but we wanted the assurance of built-in care, should we need it.”

The Schleins purchased a two-bedroom apartment with den, and completely renovated the space. “Unlike entry-fee communities, where you don’t own your home, here – as a resident/owner – you can renovate any way you like. You gain the value of home appreciation and your investment in improvements.”

Paul and Sally are enthusiastic about recent updates at Maplewood, including the renovations of the main dining room, full-service bars, onsite fresh market, entertainment center, library, billiard room, boardroom, and onsite bank. “We were active before we moved into Maplewood, and we’re active now,” Sally says. “We’re fortunate to have lots of friends, and we’ve made even more at Maplewood.”

How to find and hire a reliable handyman By: Jim Miller Dear Savvy Senior: What’s the best way to find a good handyman or tradesman to do some work around the house? I’ve had some bad luck lately with unprofessional workers who do shoddy work and charge too much.

— Frustrated Senior Dear Frustrated: Hiring a good home repair handyman can be a bit of a crapshoot. How do you find someone who will return your calls, show up on time, do the job right, and finish it, all at a fair price?

Here are some tips that can help.

Who to call

While it may seem obvious, who you call on for help will depend on what you need done. If, for example, you have a small home repair or improvement project that doesn’t require a lot of technical expertise, a handyman may be all you need.

But if you have a job that involves electricity, plumbing, or heating or cooling systems, you’re better off going with a licensed tradesman. Bigger jobs like home renovations or remodeling may require a general contractor.

Whatever type of work you need, the best way to find it is through referrals from people you trust. If your friends or family don’t have any recommendations, turn to professionals in the field, such as local hardware or home improvement stores, or real estate agents.

In this area, the publication Washington Consumers’ Checkbook, www.checkbook. org/washington-area, offers consumer-generated reviews on myriad local services.

The Internet can also help. If you are a

member of a neighborhood online list serve, you can also get recommendations there.

Websites like www.HomeAdvisor.com can put you in touch with prescreened, customer-rated service professionals in your area for free. Or try www.AngiesList.com, a membership service that will connect you with contractors and service companies with various types of expertise.

Sites like these provide ratings and reviews of local professionals who’ve done work for other members in your area, plus details about the type of work they’ve done, prices, professionalism and timeliness. Angie’s List offers an upgraded silver or gold membership for $25 or $100 per year, respectively, which offer discounts, a magazine, complaint resolutions and more.

Another option for finding handyman services is through a local or national service company like www.MrHandyman. com, www.HouseDoctors.com, or www.

HandymanConnection.com. You’ll probably pay more going through a company than you would with an independent handyman, but service companies typically promise professional workers who are screened, licensed, bonded and insured.

To find local handyman services in your community, check your yellow pages or go to any Internet search engine and type in “handyman” plus your city and state.

Vet candidates, get estimates

Once you’ve located a few candidates, your next step is to get written estimates that list the materials, costs and details of the project. It’s a good idea to get at least See HANDYMAN, page 86

Protect yourself from fraud by a fiduciary By: Timothy Barrett One in 20 older adults is a victim of financial mistreatment, according to the National Adult Protective Services Association. Most fail to report their victimization, fearing a loss of independence.

In part, that’s because the most common perpetrators of financial abuse are family members, unscrupulous caregivers and professional advisers, such as lawyers, accountants and financial advisers.

Advocacy groups use the term “endangered person” to refer to anyone who is a target of abuse due to a cognitive or physical impairment or other susceptibility.

Third-party scammers, unscrupulous vendors or service providers commonly prey on the endangered, but let’s focus on another group that sometimes takes advantage of endangered persons despite legally owing them a heightened duty of care: fiduciaries.

Who are fiduciaries?

A fiduciary is someone who has agreed to manage the affairs of another person with

three estimates from different sources to be sure you’re getting a fair deal.

Before hiring someone, check out his or her work history with your state consumer protection agency (go to usa.gov/state-consumer for a list) and the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org/council). You can also search the Web using the company or individual’s name and such words as “reviews” and “complaints.”

You also need to find out if your candidates have an approved contractor or

a duty to act always in the endangered person’s best interests, avoid conflicts of interest and self-dealing, and not exceed their authority.

The most common fiduciaries are: • Guardians (appointed by a disability court); • Attorneys in fact, also known as agents (appointed under a power of attorney); • Relatives serving as trustee (appointed by the trust settlor); and • Professionals, such as trustees, attorneys, accountants and investment advisers (selected by the endangered person or a family member).

Sadly, there isn’t much official oversight to identify and stop an abusive person acting in one of these roles.

Guardians are usually monitored by a court that reviews annual reports. Agents have no court or regulatory oversight. Individual trustees usually have only the trust agreeSee FRAUD, page 87 tradesman license. Using an unlicensed worker in a state that requires a license is dangerous — you’ll have little legal recourse if the job goes bad.

Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia all require licenses for various types of work. (To find out which jobs need licenses in your state, visit www.contractors-license. org.) Contractorcheck.com is another good resource for researching local contractors.

Also, ask to see their proof of insurance, which covers any damages they may cause while working on your home, and ask for several references from past jobs — and check them.

Professional trustees, attorneys, accountants and investment advisers are subject to rules, regulations, an internal audit and an independent disciplinary tribunal/ agency that may audit them and acts on registered complaints.

And yet, despite these measures, malfeasance still occurs with regularity. It is usually discovered well after the fact, and often results in great loss, with little or no recoverable funds.

Of course, the services these fiduciaries provide are all necessary and highly beneficial. And the vast majority of fiduciaries take great pains to act always in the endangered person’s best interests.

However, when a fiduciary abuses those powers, early detection is essential.

How fiduciaries defraud

Common abuses include: • Writing checks from their account or cashing their pension or Social Security checks for the fiduciary’s own benefit; • Pressuring them to make gifts or personal loans to the fiduciary; • Taking out loans and reverse mortgages to transfer home equity to the fiduciary; • Purchasing long-term annuities for them that mature well after their life expectancy, leaving the remainder to the fiduciary; • Investing their funds in pyramid schemes and investments that pay the fiduciary commissions and bonuses; • Using their credit cards for the fiduciary’s own expenses; • Selling or taking their personal possessons, such as autos, jewelry, etc.

• Inducing them to change their wills to better favor the fiduciary.

Signs to look for

Educate yourself and your family on the warning signs of financial abuse. Watch for these common signs, and be prepared to intervene if the endangered person: • Is purchasing numerous, repetitive or unnecessary costly home improvements, landscaping and repairs; • Has their utilities, services or coverages suspended for lack of payment; • Is isolated by a person who exerts a high degree of control over their finances, purchases and/or caregiving; or • Suddenly complains of having little or no money, of running out of medications, of a lack of suitable clothing, of losing valuable personal items, or that someone keeps asking for funds or personal items.

How to protect yourself

Here are some tips for anyone who is at risk to help stop or discover financial abuse: • Enlist several members of your family, siblings and children, to monitor your fiduciaries. Don’t rely on just one relative as gatekeeper for your finances.

You may need to sign releases so they can access the fiduciary’s records and receive periodic statements. Have them meet monthly to review your finances as a checks-and-balances measure.

• Make sure all your estate planning documents are in order. Execute an advanced healthcare directive and a durable power of attorney for financial affairs. Authorize more than one relative to serve, and have them present when you discuss your plans with your attorney and accountant.

To get the CFP credential, they must have a college degree and be educated in a wide range of personal finance subjects, pass a rigorous certification exam, have three years professional experience, meet continuing-education requirements and abide by a code of ethics.

You’re also probably better off hiring a CFP that’s a fee-only planner, verses one who earns a commission by selling you financial products. Fee-only planners charge only for their services — for example, you might pay $150 to $350 an hour for a financial tune-up, a flat fee per project, or fee based on a percentage of your assets.

It’s a shame to think that you have to protect yourself from those who are supposed to care for you the most, or from supposedly trustworthy professionals.

Questions to ask before investing money By: T. Eric Reich Many people who ask me about investments or setting up an appointment often preface it by saying, “I’m sorry, this is probably a stupid question, but…”

Most people are afraid to ask questions about their investments for fear of sounding ignorant or admitting in some way that they don’t have all of their “stuff together.”

But there truly are no stupid questions when it comes to investments. Every question leads to more knowledge, and that’s a good thing.

Here are some questions you should always ask before investing your money: First, let’s start with questions about the investment itself: Is this product registered with the SEC or my state agency?

Does this investment match my investment goals? Why do you feel it is suitable for me?

How does this investment make money?

Dividends? Interest? Capital gains?

Be leery of many other financial advising titles, designations and certifications that are out there, like the Certified Financial Consultant (CFC) or the Wealth Management Specialist (WMS). Many of these require no more than a few courses at a seminar or online, which means they’re not worth much.

Is this investment liquid? Are there any fees associated with accessing my money?

Can you tell me about the management team? Many companies tout past performance, but that may have come from a team that isn’t there anymore.

What is a reasonable return to expect for this investment? How has it performed over the long run? Many managers who highlight performance do so after a great year. If you are a long-term investor, that might not be meaningful to you.

What are the risks associated with this investment? What would cause it to lose money?

Next is a list of questions you should ask about the adviser: How long have you been in business?

What education or credentialing do you have? The credentials should match the advice you’re looking for. For example, if you need planning advice, the advisor should be a Certified Financial Planner professional. If you want investment advice, then they should hold designations such as Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA®),

What is your investment philosophy?

How do you get paid? Do you get paid more if I buy this vs. that?

How often should we meet to discuss my investments?

If I leave your firm, what fees will I be charged, if any? Most custodians charge a fee for outgoing transfers and/or closed accounts.

These questions are not inclusive, and you may have more depending on your situation.

Ask a question more than once if you don’t understand the answer the first time — or ask your adviser to rephrase the answer.

Understanding your investments and doing your due diligence on the adviser you’re working with is similar to researching a physician and understanding your prescribed medications.

You wouldn’t leave your health to chance, and the same type of care should be taken with your money.
