Editor’s Note Greetings Earthlings, Thanks for checking in with The Beachside Resident. Welcome to The Party Issue! This time of year is when the fun really gets started. It’s time to get weird, be spooky, dress like a goblin, drink champagne for breakfast, and crash parties. We all, more or less, love the summer months and the endless opportunity for a perfect beach day, but autumn will forever reign supreme as my favorite season. The palm trees may refrain from changing fronds colors, but the coffeeshops have released their pumpkin flavors and we’re beginning to feel cooler breezes wafting in, five degrees cooler... cheers to Fall! I’m excited to sit on the deck at Junkanoo in the Port and crush that spiced Caribbean food and jam to some reggae Sundays without falling under heat duress!

We got some intel from Mayor Ben Malik suggesting some upgrades to Cocoa Beach’s environmental stewardship. CB is taking a stand and we couldn’t be more proud. Head over to page 13 and read up on changes the city is making to improve the protection of our waterways.

Before you settle in with this issue, flip to page 19 and whip up a batch of chocolate indulgence using Blake McDermott’s (adapted) recipe in “Party Brownies”. I can’t think of a better way to usher in cooler temperatures, pumpkin patches and the parties of the season.

A YEAR IN REVIEW AND A FINAL ADIEU We’ve come full circle. We spent the last year talking about stocks, mutual funds, ETF’s, and bonds. We discussed how to build a balanced investment portfolio, and then ventured over to the dark side with options. A common tool used by investors and traders alike is technical analysis or charting.

Most anyone can look at a chart and spot a trend. However, there is a wealth of information, if you know how to look deeper. Part science, part art - technical analysis can help prevent mistakes when both buying and selling. Today’s financial websites will even analyze the chart for you. You just have to know what to ask. No math, no mess.

The beauty of charting is its indifference. No emotion and all news/ public sentiment is already priced in.

I could go in depth and drag this out another year but nobody wants that. You can find excellent books on the subject at any library or bookstore and I will be covering the topic during my seminars.

True story: A farmers favorite mule fell into an abandoned well.

When the farmer found out, he tried and tried but could not haul the mule out. He decided the humane thing would be to bury him in the well. As the dirt fell on the mules back, he would shiver and it accumulated on the floor. Soon, he was up to his knees it dirt. One leg at a time he stepped out and stayed on top of the dirt pile. This continued until he was high enough to jump out of the well. Moral of the Story: When life piles on the dirt, shake it off and step up.

October 11th-14th COCOA BEACH, FL – Due to Hurricane Dorian’s path towards Central Florida’s Space Coast during the days leading up to the Surf Fest, the event has been postponed. The Surf Fest will now take place during Columbus Day Weekend, October 11th-14th. This is the second time in all 34 years of running the event where the Surf Fest had to be postponed due to an incoming hurricane. Although hurricanes produce great waves for Florida’s east coast, they can be life threatening and very dangerous. The City of Cocoa Beach and Westgate Pier’s recommendations to postpone the Surf Fest were in agreeance with event organizers to keep competitors, volunteers, and spectators out of harm’s way.

The 34th Annual NKF Rich Salick PRO-AM Surfing Festival is still featuring the Ron Jon Surf Shop Men’s Pro, and will take place at the Westgate Resorts Cocoa Beach Pier. Surfers and beach-goers alike will enjoy the weekend festivities while raising funds to fight kidney disease.

Professional and amateur surfers will hit the waves in the preliminary heats that begin on October 12th.

Professional competitions include the Ron Jon Men’s Pro, Victory Casino Men’s Longboard Pro, and Gutin & Wolverton Women’s Longboard Pro. Amateur divisions that you don’t want to miss include the Surfer Dudes Pollywog division where 9 year old surfers and younger compete for a spot in the finals of this prestigious competition. Surfing finals conclude the weekend on Columbus Day, October 14th.

This world-class event not only features both Professional and Amateur surfing events but competitive tandem surfing, a luau and surf movies on the beach, the Taste of Brevard and Silent Auction, and entertainment throughout the weekend to guarantee something for everyone.

The Taste of Brevard and Silent Auction will take place on Sunday, October 13th at the Radisson at the Port in Cape Canaveral. This tropical event showcases all the wonders Brevard has to offer. Auction items include hand-painted surfboards, artwork from the Wyland Galleries, beach cruisers, surf packs, and much more. You are also able to enjoy samples from over 25 of Brevard’s finest restaurants. All of the proceeds go to the National Kidney Foundation of Florida to help increase awareness and prevention of kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well being of individuals and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation. Tickets are $35 and available on NKFsurf.com. They will be $40 at the door With the help of over 300 volunteers and the support of the community, this year’s event is sure to make waves. The event is in honor of the co-founder and 3 time kidney recipient Rich Salick who passed away in July 2012. Recently the City of

Cocoa Beach discontinued

the use of glyphosate (active

ingredient in Roundup) at all city

maintained parks and golf course. The

city-owned golf course abuts the Banana

River and we want to ensure we are good

stewards of protecting our waterways, while

maintaining this wonderful facility for the public to

enjoy. The replacement product Cheetah Pro is being

used in over 46 states and the active ingredient is a

naturally occurring broad-spectrum herbicide produced by several species of streptomyces soil bacteria. Unlike glyphosate, this herbicide has no known cancer risks, as well for the safety of our employees applying this product. The tradeoff is there is a cost differential of 3.5 times the cost of glyphosate, $100/five gallons for glyphosate (aka Roundup) versus $350/five gallons for Cheetah Pro, and must be applied more frequently. This is a small price to invest in a safer product for both our employees and the surrounding waterways!

The City of Cocoa Beach continues to make our water quality a top priority (memorialized in our city’s long-term goals as well) by making investments in our infrastructure. Some recent investments include the following: • New force main sewer line on the North end of town to replace deteriorated sewer line to address overflowing of sewer main during periods of heavy rains and causing back flow into our residents’ homes.

• Waste water plant improvements of $7.34 million (approximately $2.2 million from grant funding, thank you St. John’s Water Management District and Indian River Lagoon sales tax, with another $5.09 million in State of Florida revolving loan (20 year fixed rate of 1.19%!!) These improvements will further improve treated wastewater and lessen nutrient outflow.

Nourish Your Tribe: Empowering Parents to Grow Strong, Smart, Successfully Kids Nicole Magryta, MBA, RDN 9781732829603, $19.99 Though the title mentions parents and kids, “Nourish Your Tribe” is for all ages to begin to do more things to stay fit. Magryta, who has been a clinical nutritionist for many years, writes about food issues, in terms all of us can understand, to achieve a much healthier existence by being more cautious. Unlike other books of this type, Magryta does not advocate getting rid of anything.

Instead, she is a firm believer of moderation. There are tips like natural methods to treat such things as the common cold. Instead of taking antibiotics, there are many different foods that increase the body’s own abilities that are not harmful at all. Now for the fun part: Magryta has included different types of recipes that sound exquisite. Miso Tahini Dip, Curry Fish Salad, Frozen Chocolate Banana Bites, Dark Chocolate Bark with Super Seeds and Sea Salt are some of the delightful concoctions. This being party time, with holidays like Halloween and others, everyone can look into “Nourish Your Tribe” that will have your body saying, “I’m the carriage, and you’re the brain.” It’s time to party for a beautiful relationship.

Skin Game Stuart Woods 9780735219168, $28.00 Teddy Fay is back in action in “Skin Game.” Fay will have to do everything he can to stay alive while trying to expose a mole of the CIA. He must also expose a sinister plot before it can be put into play. Fay has always been one of the most fascinating characters of Stuart Woods, and “Skin Game” is one of the best suspenseful tales of Woods long list of titles. Fans of Woods will not be disappointed with “Skin Game.”

Murder Is My Business Brett Halliday 9780843963281, $9.95 Growing up, I read a number of series including James Bond, Mike Hammer, and Michael Shayne. I am happy to say that “Murder Is My Business” is better than ever because, back then, I had a very different perspective than now. The story is filled with great characters, writing, and a great description of the time period the story takes place in. If you have never read a Michael Shayne, now is the time to discover him in “Murder Is My Business.

• Phase IIB of residential muck dredging project (final phase of dredging the last 12 residential canals in Cocoa Beach). Thank you Brevard County Commission for the grant funding of $5.9 million for this project from the Save Our Indian River Lagoon Plan and St. John’s River Water Management District for the $1.5 million grant, this will eliminate 1000’s of pounds of nitrogen from our waterways to clean up our canals! (Special thanks to City of Cocoa Beach employee and Project Manager, Wayne Carragino for securing these grants!)

Of significance is the study currently in the works by Dr. Austin Fox from the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) titled: “The Efficacy of Sediment Aeration as a Complement to Muck Dredging in the Indian River Lagoon”. The City will be testing the use of aeration processes in a test canal shortly to improve water flow and oxygen levels. Most of the man-made canals in Cocoa Beach suffer from a lack of water flow and stagnation. Once the muck is removed we need to look at long-term solutions to prevent algae blooms from occurring. The study by Dr. Fox used micrometer sized bubbles in residential canals in Satellite Beach. They are currently testing nanometer sized bubbles (highly-concentrated dissolved oxygen (DO)) at the Florida Tech Rivers Edged Campus and directly comparing results with the efficacy of dredging. The two aeration processes (micrometer sized bubbles and highly-concentrated DO) work differently but address the same problem of low DO. We expect to see reduced nutrient fluxes (i.e., releases of nutrients from sediments) during spring and summer months when the bottom water in canals would otherwise be anoxic and inhospitable to biota. In layman’s terms, creating some water flow could increase oxygen levels and lessen algae blooms!

The Salty Fox is one of those places you drive by and make a mental note to visit because you can just tell it’s going to be a fun and different experience. The venue and personalities inside do not disappoint. A fun and eclectic decor speak of artsy folk hell bent on having a good time and hanging out.

The couple that owns the spot fed and hunored us with their clever banter and candid responses. Be sure to check them out, you’ll want to return, just like we did.

Who owns this joint?

Sam and Veronica Lourdes, happily married, and creating as they go.

Tell us a little about your personal and professional background.

Sam: I used to own Boondocks on Sarno for four years, sold it, met the love of my life (Veronica).

How did you come up with the name Salty Fox? Well, it was originally supposed to the Fox Hole, but we found out there were NUMEROUS strip clubs called the Fox Hole. So, Salty Fox it was… “Salty” because we’re close to the water and “Fox” - well because we like foxes.

How did you come up with the concept for your restaurant & how long did it take you to perfect it?

Sam: Well, we wanted to add a hood system for our kitchen, which would allow us to fry and do a variety of food concepts, but was a pricey option. So we came up with a healthier option: paninis, soups, sliders and such. There’s a lot of cool stuff. We’ve been told it’s the BEST hangover food. I came up with the pizza roll wrap when I was home late one night, drunk, and got inspired. It’s taken about a year to perfect the concept. It’s pretty set in stone, now.

They made me laminate the menu, so it’s locked in and I’m not allowed to change it.

What inspired you to open up a restaurant?

A music venue would be a lot of work. I wanted a simple bar where we did the same thing all the time. That ended up being more work, anyhow. But

it’s good. It’s great, in fact! We’re really happy and I love this place. Normally, by now, I would’ve sold it and moved on. We love the people that come in here. It’s always fun and full of random people fully involved in having a good time.

Which dish or recipe are you most proud of? **without a hesitation to respond** Candy Jalapeños! Our jalapeños are fresh cut, candied in-house, served with ritz crackers and cream cheese; sweet with a little bit of heat. They’re awesome! Also the Cucumber Boats. They’ve got shredded chicken, crushed cashews, shredded carrots floating in a handmade cucumber boat, and they’re topped with 1/2 ginger and 1/2 sriracha and ranch dressing. The crowd loves them.

Which is one of the most popular menu items?

Definitely JaBacon Me Crazy. Mango habanero jelly with chicken, bacon, onion and pepper jack cheese, pressed into a handful of a panini. There’s TONS of flavor and the sandwich is a handful of delicious.

You’ll definitely want to try one.

Tell us what it is about your restaurant that sets you apart from the rest.

Diversity. There’s no specific type of person that comes here. We are a neighborhood bar and we serve everyone, and they all get along. Doctors, Lawyers, and first responders, to the smiley couple at the end of the bar… We have a bartender that used to be an F.I.T. coach, who was hired as security and when he tried to leave, we refused and trained him up on the bar. Now he’s the number ONE ole Fashioned maker and martinis in town. **He’s also super handsome and will charm the devil out of you** What’s a favorite party you’ve hosted?

Onezie Bar Crawl and Christmas in July. With Christmas in July we have a Bad Santa who’s packed handcuffs, whips and MD 20/20. Everyone has a great time. It’s AWEsome! For Onesie Bar Crawl, if they come in a onzie, they get a drink. Imagine this: EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN A ONSIE. And there’s hundreds cruising & frolicking down the streets of

EGAD. There’s a costume contest. It’s SUPER fun.

I mean, we’re also the number one karaoke bar in Brevard. At least that’s what we’re told. It’s WILD! Every Thursday night the bar is full.

What is something on your bucket list?

Sam: I wanna do a Speak Easy. That’s already in the works, so my bucket list is about to happen.

Stay alert and check in with us because it’s opening and we’re excited to bring this concept to our community.

Veronica: I want an AirBNB in the Keys.

What’s your favorite perk of being a restauranteur?

None. (HAHA, we all laughed)

Really, it’s just seeing people happy.

What would you order for your last meal?

Sam: Probably a filet mignon.

Veronica: A filet mignon with bacon wrapped asparagus.

Sam: OOOHHHH yeah, me too!

**They really ARE perfect for each other** Who came up with the food concepts?

Both of us. We’ve kinda of built on things as time went on. Paninis started with a standard concept, but they’ve evolved into something incredible. It’s good food, creatively designed and cleverly executed. It’s not bar food, it’s comfort food. The menu is fun and different. There’s not one thing on there we wouldn’t recommend.

Where do you spend your time when you’re not running one of the most exciting restaurants on the Space Coast?

Veronica: Here. Other than our house, where we sleep. Really, EGAD, supporting all the local spots.

Sam: We really spend it here. We love this place.

Do you have any parting words for us?

Thanks for coming in, hanging out and drinking with us! Eat local, drink local, support local. Don’t be a dick and tip your bartender.

Party Brownies You wake up and it’s the morning of the party! You look at your watch… it’s the afternoon of the party! Crap! You fell asleep after sampling too much of tonight’s brownies’ special ingredient; this also explains why you are on the floor and why your shirt is missing. Panic starts to set in because you’re THAT guy/girl at the party that always brings homemade party brownies to the party! You were supposed to go to the store for exactly 1/3 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 cup of white sugar, ½ cup of all-purpose flour, and ¼ teaspoon of baking powder. You then remember that you have exactly one box of pre-made brownie mix and no one can tell the difference anyway… so, it’s all good.

As a sign of respect to the many brownie scientists that gave up their social lives to find the perfect temperature to cook brownies at, you read the box and find it’s 350 Fahrenheit, because this is America and we don’t F@#$ with Celsius. After reading the rest of the box, you chuck it over your shoulder.

This isn’t your first party brownie rodeo—you got this! You whisk 2 eggs, 2 tablespoons of water, making sure they are properly mixed before adding a ½ cup of your secret ingredient: special infused coconut oil. Why coconut oil? Because you’re not a fool that uses butter and you’re sensitive to people with dairy allergies, that’s why. After thoroughly mixing in your “homemade” brownie mix and few taste tests, you goop it on a 9x9 greased pan and chuck it in the oven. You spend a couple minutes searching for the tossed box to remind yourself to set the timer for 35 minutes.

As you lick the bowl clean, you start to experience a moment of chocolaty bliss. Everything is right in the world. Your inner child and outer adult are high-fiving as you laugh hysterically at all your mother’s past warnings of salmonella! Gone are the days of “regs” and “crip.” Today we have more of a knowledgeable approach as a consumer. Just like a wine connoisseur, we learn where the strain comes from, the notes, and potency.

Unlike wine though, marijuana is a great way to medicate ailments. Some medications can cause other health issues (side effects) and meds keep adding up over the years.The beautiful thing about marijuana is that it can replace multiple medications. For example, let me list a few common health issues that typically require medications: anxiety, IBS, chronic pain, and migraines. A doctor would have prescribed at least four medications, probably more, to treat that patient. I also want to emphasize that I am not pill shaming. I understand that some of us need medication to live and I am one of them. But, why not eliminate a few pills for one piece of nature? As a disclaimer, please consult your doctor. I am simply just a nerd who does a lot of research and experiments.

We’ll start with THC education. Tetrahydrocannabinol is the psychoactive cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. THC is where you get the buzzy high 20

feeling. It is also very beneficial for pain relief, nausea, PTSD, withdrawals, sleep issues, seizures, and muscle tremors. For some, THC can give that paranoid side effect; CBD actually counteracts that feeling.

Knowing the right strains and percentages is key to finding exactly what you need. You also have cannabis types: Indica and Sativa. Indica (in-da-couch) is the mellow type. This type is calming and relaxing. Sativa can sometimes light a fire under your ass. It may make you extra chatty at a party or give you energy to work on a project. So, back to being paranoid… If you have had that effect from bud, you probably had a high THC, low CBD, Sativa strain. Now you see why it is great to learn? What you really needed was a low THC, high CBD, Indica strain.

CBD, or Cannabidiol, is rich in medicinal properties.

You can consume CBD flower and not get high. What is the fun in that? Well, some of us have day jobs, need to drive, or get drug tested while still needing the benefits that marijuana has to offer. CBD is a strong, natural anti-inflammatory that doesn’t get you stoned. The list of medical benefits is long

enough to fill this page.You can purchase legal CBD as long as it does not contain more than 0.3% THC. Isolate contains only CBD (think isolated). Full Spectrum contains all compounds naturally present in the plant, which has more benefits in my opinion.

Hey creatures! My name is Hobbes and I am a one-year-old cat. I was born without a home or humans to call my own. I lived in a pretty cool shelter that took me in, called the Brevard Humane Society in Cocoa, Florida. People came in to see me being all cute and meowing, but one day I went on an adventure and left the shelter. A volunteer lady

er humans play video games or chase them around the house. The smaller girl, my sister human, she gives my lots of rubs but when she stops, I swat at her so that she keeps petting me. I have her trained! You should try it.

(who is now my human mom) scooped me up and I was lucky to be welcomed to my fur-ever home by a family of five crazy creatures. The smaller girl cried when she saw me, and I worried I upset her, but it turns out that sometimes human creatures cry when they are happy. There was another cat that did not welcome me… her name is Patsy.

She is a little grumpy but we get along now.

I get called “kitten boi” and “Hobbesy Boi” and all sorts of names I can’t understand.

I follow my family around, spending time with everyone and I also love to sleep in the hamper. I get lots of pets and rubs. I have this cool trick that I do when I want food.

I stand up and scratch on the pantry door so my humans can see how tall I am. Then, they fill up my bowl. I have become quite fat but life is good. I also love to snuggle on my momma human. I lie on top of her and hug her, snuggling her face. She says I am getting heavy but I just love to cuddle. I always ask my dad human how his day was when he comes home from work; sometimes he responds by making a loud noise from his butt. I like to watch the broth-

The rubs are endless, the food is forever flowing (they know better), and I get all the attention while seeing my humans smile. The only thing I wish is that my friends over at the shelter could find their fur-ever homes too. If you can’t take in a furry creature like me, it would be just as cool if you donated some items to help care for all the homeless pets. I will fur-ever be grateful for being rescued and also for being featured as Pet of the Month for the coolest magazine in the universe. I am not just saying that for treats.

FISHING REPORT INSHORE

September thru November are three awesome months to target large breeder redfish, one of the things that make the Indian River, Mosquito Lagoon, and the Space coast such a popular destination for fisherman all over. Both estuaries typically see larger schools of fish this time of the year around drop offs, channel edges and along the edge of shallow water grass flats with deep water access close by. It’s very important we handle these fish with care! Use larger setups such a 5000 series reels with stout medium heavy, to heavy action rods loaded with 20 - 30 lb braided line. It’s critical to get these fish to the bait quickly, as well as giving them a good quick release. My favorite baits for these larger fish are single hook gold spoons, large swim baits, or top-waters with a single hook instead of traditional trebles. The live bait enthusiasts can typically find a good bite on large live mullet, pinfish, or cut baits as well including ladyfish.

These fish are spawning and our future depends on our conservation, so please take great care when catching and releasing these fish, even more so than usual.

Hallelujah, we made it through September! This makes two years in a row that September was a total let down. Florence started the pattern in 2018 and Dorian this year. The huge swells from passing storms have pretty much kept us on lock down, but with any luck, just like last year, October will come strong and turn the tide.

I think we will see a very slow start to the month. The water just hasn’t been right since Dorian passed and we continue to be plagued with large swells. East wind should quickly clean the water back up and after a solid week of calm seas good things will start to happen.

large bull sharks with a few cobia will be found behind these boats on a regular basis. It is also a fun relaxing day to troll small jet heads just outside the reef to target the black fin tuna. I always like to troll a large diving plug or jet head way back for that wahoo and I will run one mono rigged naked ballyhoo just behind my shortest teaser for that occasional mahi or sailfish. This type of day will not produce large numbers of fish but it is easy and can be very rewarding with a couple trophy fish.

The big red drum & sharks will show along Cocoa Beach and north of the Cape, but the muddy water will make them hard to find. Your best bet is to throw out cut mullet or pogies and wait.

Use a sliding sinker rig with a 6/0 circle hook and 50 lb test leader with a reel capable of holding a good amount of 40 lb braid. If you start getting cut off by big sharks, change your leader to a stretch of #6 wire. The reds will not shy from the wire but using the mono is better for release.

Bottom fishing will also be off to a very slow start this month but the vermilion snapper bite is usually awesome at some point in October.

Once you get on the vermilion don’t hesitate to recycle one and see if there is a fat grouper lurking ready to inhale it. Amberjack fishing should be decent using large live baits or large vertical jigs. Focus your effort on the tallest deep structure you can find and expect to see the fish suspended in the water column.

Live bait trolling, Pelican Flats and offshore wrecks in 80 to 100ft will produce a mixed bag of king mackerel, cobia, mahi and black fin tuna once we see a few consecutive calm days. Be on the lookout for shrimp boats because they are always worth a quick stop in October. Have a handful of chum or live bait ready to throw in the water and see what swims out from underneath. A lot of bonito with a few black fin tuna and

The way to approach this month is to be flexible but be prepared to capitalize on the few opportunity’s you get. By the end of the month the fishing will be great as long as we don’t get any more big swells from passing hurricanes.

Hope Is Defiant!!

My son, Emmanuel Kofkin, chose eternal peace in May 2016. He was 21. He graduated from CBHS with honors, was the speaker for his graduating class 2013, recipient of an International Baccalaureate diploma and was accepted to Highpoint University, the only college he applied to and he walked on to their Division 1 Track and Field Team. He was living his dreams, feeling his feels, but only sharing the good feels with us, keeping the demons silent and invisible.

Suicide took my son’s life and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) saved mine. This non-profit organization provided me with ‘safe places to go’, where people knew suicide had touched my life. The Brevard Out of the Darkness Community Walk is sponsored by the AFSP. I walked in a walk the first fall after my son’s suicide and wondered why Brevard County didn’t have a walk. The opportunity existed, just waiting for people to pick it up. Pick it up is exactly what I did!

Brevard County raised close to $30,000 during the inaugural walk in 2018 and had over 300 participants.

We are on our way to being able to contribute substantially again this year, through our Brevard County Out of the Darkness Community Walk 2019. Wishing Tree Planting Fairvilla Boutique, on A1A in Cape Canaveral, has always been a supporter of the LGBTQ community and we are proud to have participated in the annual Space Coast Pride celebration on September 28th. This year we chose to mark the event with a celebration across multiple days and in the process, gifted something a little unusual to both Pride and the city of Cape Canaveral.

We brought a wishing tree!

During Pride, we encouraged celebrants to tie colorful, handwritten wishes to the branches of the tree, creating a beautiful spectacle, full of hopes and dreams. Wishing trees appear across a variety of cultures throughout the world; so make a wish! It’s one of the few luxuries that are accessible to EVERYONE. With the help of Rockledge Gardens, we chose to donate a rainbow eucalyptus tree.

The tree stood proud as the centerpiece of our booth and served as a symbol of love and unity, filled with rainbow wishing slips, creating a memory that participants will cherish.

The festivities continued over at Manatee Sanctuary Park, with a tree-planting ceremony.

Partnering with the City of Cape Canaveral and Keep Brevard Beautiful, we hope that future generations enjoy its beauty for years to come and are reminded, always, to keep making wishes.

Discovering the Benefits of Kava Call it dirt water; call it magic, the allure of kava is easy to appreciate once you experience its effects, especially in the company of others. Kava is the root of a pepper plant (Piper Methysticum) found throughout the Pacific islands, including Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga, and Hawaii It has been used as medicine and a ceremonial herb for centuries. Typically, the root is ground into a powder, strained with water, and served in a small bowl or ‘shell’ (like the traditional coconut shell).

Kava’s origins trace back 3,000 years when it was used as a form of currency, gifted at weddings, and perhaps most importantly, used to bring peace among warring tribes and resolve conflict between neighboring villages. In the South Pacific, if two tribes are not seeing eye to eye or two people within a tribe are not getting along, kava is used as a peace offering, with participants gathering for what they refer to as a “kava ceremony” to put their differences aside.

Community is an essential part of the kava experience, as it brings people together, helps them relate, and fosters connection, making it a unique social tool. Kava increases sociability and elevates the mind by promoting positive emotions through the limbic system, which is largely responsible for the unique communal vibe you will find at most kava bars. Many kava bars honor the ceremonial tradition as they host their own variations of the kava ceremony, gathering people to drink kava together and cheers to “Bula,” which means “to long life and good health.” Downtown Cocoa Beach has its own kava bar that goes by that very name, Bula Kava Bar and Coffeehouse.

Kava’s benefits are prolific. It is a diuretic, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, a topical anesthetic, and FDA approved as a dietary supplement. Some people (including I) find that it helps with anxiety and relieves stress. Kava is a muscle relaxant that can help relieve insomnia and aid in treating depression. It does not make you drowsy but can improve sleep. The calming effects of kava are due to a combination of its main active ingredients, known as kavalactones.

Kavalactones build up in your system over time resulting in a reverse tolerance which requires less kava to get the same dreamy feeling. And while it can induce feelings of euphoria or make you feel relaxed, it’s subtle and doesn’t affect or impair judgment. Kava is generally said to be non-addictive, though like anything, you can like it enough to want it on the regular. If feeling good is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

With all that said, there are some warnings to heed to reap kava’s benefits without harming yourself or having a negative experience. Number one, kava and alcohol do not mix. Kava can accentuate the ethanol in the alcohol by about 10-15% and inhibit your liver from being able to break down the alcohol as usual. Liver damage can result, and you can get very sick. To be safe, it’s recommended to wait 24 hours between consuming alcohol and kava. There are also certain medications that could interact so if you have any doubt, consult with your physician before consuming kava.

For all the benefits it provides, kava is gaining popularity in the United States. There are about a hundred kava bars nationwide and that number is rapidly growing as more people reduce their alcohol consumption and discover alternatives like kava. Whatever brings you to kava, I hope you find your way there and experience your own kava bliss.

Toe-tappin’, head-boppin’, finger-snappin’, boogie woogie Blues from the first beat; this CD will light a fire under you and get your engine revving! Old girl Shemekia takes a shot at the vocals and lets you know straight up on the second cut, “It was the wine talking” as she says, “Pardon me, but baby that wasn’t me!” Cash Box Kings are are not new on the Blues scene, but after their 2017 Alligator Records Debut “Royal Mint”, the Blues World stood up and took notice. Combining Chicago and Delta Blues with Memphis’ Rockabilly to create what The Kings call “Bluesabilly”, they shred on every cut with modern authority and oldschool vibe. Great tracks sing about stuff like how he “doesn’t want a skinny woman”, how he “wants some hog jowls”, how he wants a “big leg woman”, how his woman is trying to poison him - you know, the usual everyday stuff. With nine previous releases to their credit, and hundreds of live performances under their belts, these guys have made the Blues World take notice.

Having played at well-known Blues Festivals such as Chicago, Tampa, Doheny, and Mississippi Valley as well as tours overseas in Belgium, France, Spain, and Germany, these cats ain’t going nowhere but to the top. So go get this scorcher of a CD and Hail to the Kings!

Joe Louis Walker, Bruce Katz, and Giles Robson are no strangers to music in general or The Blues in particular. After meeting in 2016, they decided to put together a trio consisting of Guitarist/Vocalist Walker, British Harpmaster Robson, and famed Piano Virtuoso Katz. The result is this masterful CD of rare and classic Blues sung in a traditional Blues style. Many of the artists covered are at the top of “Fursey’s Most Wanted Bluesmasters List”, including Sonny Boy Williamson, Blind Willie McTell, Papa Lightfoot, Big Maceo, and Smiley Lewis.

From the first few beats you realize that Joe Louis Walker’s phenomenal vocals and massive array of guitar techniques blend well with Giles Robinson’s smooth harp mastery and Bruce Katz’ piano domination.

Slow cuts like “I’m A Lonely Man” are balanced by the antithesis in jams like “You Got To Run Me Down”, where the toe-tapping is plentiful. Slow creepers like “Murderer’s Home” take you back to the old-time Blues masters. “Chicago Breakdown” is another toe-tapper that will have you ready to jump up and hit the floor.

So get on up and dance. This is a great CD especially for the Blues Purist as well as the newbie so go get it and start your Journey to the Heart of The Blues.

Elvin Bishop is sort of a goofball. I’ve seen him in concert, in his signature bluejean overalls, hair uncombed and totally disheveled is the look of Elvin Bishop.

But he is a famous musician, an excellent guitarist, and this CD is another good one to add to his credit. Although, I have to admit I like the songs better when Bishop doesn’t sing. Elvin has some help on this CD with his buddies Bob Welsh (piano and guitar), and Willy Jordan on cajon. No, not cajones, he doesn’t play those. Or maybe he does. But for the purposes of this review, he plays the cajon, which is a handplayed Peruvian drumbox. He also does some vocals. Together they have stacked up a line of credits to include Grammy nominations, Album of the Year at the Blues Music Awards, and Song of the Year from the Blues Foundation. As expected, the CD starts off with Bishop’s tongue in cheek political satire with Somethin’ Smells Funky ‘Round Here, as he takes a swipe at those in political office at the current time. They then roll into a cover of Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher”, which does it justice.

Thing slow down in “Another Mule” and “I Can’t Stand the Rain”, then switches gears and speeds up on “Bob’s Boogie” and “Stomp”. Plus, I get another message from Blues Boy Willie Stevens in “That’s The Way Willie Likes It”. So, overall, this is a great CD and a dynamic addition to anyone’s musical collection.

This self-titled LP captures the essence of all that is Hispanic, Latino, and Chicano culture.

Harnessing the power of the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, ADP & the LA7’s ripped up the 70’s, touring throughout the USA and South America, entertaining countless audiences along the way. Incredible horns accent many cuts on this platter as brothers Salvador and Hector Flores rip one track after another. A personal favorite is the epic “Guantanamera” sung by the great Jose Gonzalez.This Cuban classic is about a woman who gets fed up and leaves her man after being mistreated, and the man is pining away for his “pulpa de tamarindo”. Many other great cuts including “Viva Espana” and a chilling version of “Taps” (El Silencio) make this great vinyl one of my prized possessions. Anita even rips off a few classics like “Cu-Cu-Ru-CuCu”, a great Mexican classic taken from an old Indian Legend of a crying dove who waits for death to be reunited with his beloved. Anita de Palma went on to achieve much fame as a Hispanic Activist until her death a few years ago. Arguably one of the best drummers in a generation, Michael John Smith, aka “The Animal”, went on to achieve success in other bands and genres, including “The Uprising” and “Vessels of Honor” after years proving himself in the garages with ‘Mike and the Disrespects’, among other projects. As for the rest of the band…who knows? Maybe a reunion tour is in the works. Quizas? Quizas? No further information is available about the artist.

Established in 1852, Captain Tony’s Saloon is not only known for being the oldest saloon in Key West, but also for its unique design of being built around a growing tree.

Though that may seem like a thoughtful idea, the original use of the building is far from it. When first built, it was an icehouse and the island’s only morgue. The tree it’s protecting was used as the town’s hanging tree for executing pirates. During the late 1980’s, the original floors had been replaced and more than a dozen bodies were found underneath. Patrons have been said to experience anything from bizarre noises and flickering of lights to doors opening, closing and locking all on their own.

A house, in West Palm Beach, which was originally used as a funeral home, was turned into a family home by Karl Riddle in the 1920s. According to his diary, there was a strange energy and even stranger occurrences in the house after a worker hung himself in the attic of his home. In an attempt to save his family from the bizarre hauntings, he removed the beam that held the rope, but it did no good. Though the historic house has now been preserved and relocated, it seem as though the ghost within has moved right along with it and still attacks workers who wander into the attic.

THE MONSTER UNDER THE BED THE DEVIL’S TREE Inside Port St. Lucie’s Oak Hammock Park sits a tree, haunted by the spirits of two young women who were killed and buried under this age old oak. Years after the discovery of their bones, claims of blood curdling screams, and devil worshippers in hooded robes performing rituals, have been responded to by local police. Attempts to remove the spirits from the tree include an exorcism by a local diocese. Numerous efforts to cut down the tree have all since failed; the oak, along with the spirits that possess it, still remain.

There is an old urban legend of vacationing people finding a dead body under their hotel bed, and it really did happen in Florida - twice! A man in a Miami hotel followed a horrible stench in his room and discovered the body of a 24-year-old woman under his bed. At another hotel in Fort Lauderdale, a couple complained to staff about the odor near the platform bed they’d been sleeping on. The staff lifted the bed and discovered a 47-year-old person tucked underneath.

Though both of these happened in the early 90s, if you smell anything off in a hotel room, you might want to consider saying “Bloody Mary” three times into the bathroom mirror. Just kidding… check out!

Halloween in Florida can feel a bit redundant; living here is often a horror. The state is known for its terrifying creatures that stalk the streets and swamps, flooding us with the heebie-jeebies… and that is just the creatures with birth certificates and opposable thumbs. Let us not forget to add the many creatures of air, ground and sea that we share our home with. There aren’t enough chapters, even in the Never Ending Story, to tell you of all the strange and scary things that have happened here. For vampires and cannibals alike, here’s a little taste:
