Food for Thought Now that the holidays are over it is time to start the New Year. 2015 definitely had its fair share of highlights.

Cocoa Beach had a really great end to the year by breaking ground on the Minutemen Streetscape project. It will offer a new revitalized look for the downtown community and its visitors.

There must be revitalization in the air because the beachside will be getting a couple of miles of sidewalks and bike paths on South Orlando Avenue. The Florida Key Lime Pie Company moved from Cocoa to Downtown Cocoa Beach. Their new spot is very nice, you should check it out. Uptown, we hear there is a new draft house with a newly renovated outdoor seating area close to the Cocoa Beach Pier. And at the Port, Rusty’s Seafood and Oyster Bar will have new look with the same great food and service. Last month, Space X fired a rocket into the air and landed it back on the pad. Now I guarantee it wasn’t easy to achieve, and the staff here at The Beachside Resident is pretty amazed by their achievements. We look forward to see what Space X and other flights companies have to offer in the future. Thing are really looking up.

So, what’s happening beachside in 2016…

Well, this month it’s all about food and full bellies. Every great beach community offers food from all walks of life, and the Space Coast can boast some of the best. Some of you might be so local that you were conceived ‘under a beachside oak tree’, others might be just showing up today to find out what our community has to offer. Every month we highlight the best places to grab food and drinks.

We’re at it again, but this month we decided to go even further. We want you to know where your food is coming from, and where food goes. Organizations like Florida Fields to Forks bring locally sourced products from all over to the state right here to Brevard County residents. And did you know surplus food from some local grocery stores doesn’t go to waste, but goes to programs like the Central Brevard Sharing Center to help feed those who don’t get enough at home? It’s pretty amazing.

Food is a uniting factor. Everyone gets hungry, and there are hundreds of beachside joints to satisfy your

Owner of The Florida Key Lime Pie Company Louie started his company in 2006, selling his family’s fresh baked Florida Key Lime Pie to local restaurants.

Things took off from there with more and more demand for his cool and refreshing pie. In 2012, he opened his retail store in Cocoa. He dubbed it “Your All Florida Store”, selling local products made in Florida by Floridans. In November, Louie packed up his Cocoa store and headed beachside to Downtown Cocoa Beach.

Here is the recipe for a simple yet elegant chicken dish with a Floribbean flair.

“Floribbean” Spiced Chicken with Cilantro & Key Lime Butter

4 medium-sized chicken breast cutlets (pounded thin or cut into thin, even portions) Floribbean spice mix for sprinkling (1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon chili powder, 1 teaspoon dried oregano, salt and pepper to taste) 3 tablespoons unsalted butter ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped 2 key limes, juiced Canola oil Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

Directions Make sure your chicken cutlets are thin and even in thickness. Lightly dust both sides of the cutlets with the Floribbean spice mix.

Preheat a large-sized sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add one tablespoon canola oil to preheated sauté pan. Add the spiced cutlets to the pan carefully without crowding the pan. Cook chicken for two to three minutes per side.The chicken should be golden brown and cooked completely through. Insert an internal cooking thermometer into the chicken cutlet. It should read 165 degrees for correct doneness.

Remove from pan and let cool slightly.

Turn the heat on the pan down to medium-low.

Add ½ cup of water to pan and stir to remove any bits of flavor from the bottom of the pan. Reduce the water in the pan by half (this should take only a minute or so). Add the key lime juice to the pan and continue to stir. Add the butter to the pan sauce while stirring constantly. The butter should blend with the pan sauce to form a thicker pan sauce.

After the butter is combined to make the sauce, remove from heat and add cilantro. Taste pan sauce and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.

Spoon the pan sauce over the chicken. Serve the chicken with rice and fresh vegetables for a complete meal. Garnish with extra cilantro and key lime wedges.

Frank is a man with a green thumb and a taste for fresh vegetables.

He’s a great cook and enjoys sharing his bounty with the neighbors. While passersby admire his graceful palms, bird of paradise and Canna lilies, little do they realize they’re surrounded by nature’s edible bounty.

“My home faces east/west. East exposure in the front and west exposure in the back. But I have vegetables everywhere, including the front yard. If they look good and healthy, no one cares.”

Nestled inside a bed of cabbage palms are light-green, ruffled broad-leafed plants.

“You have to get pretty close to see the broccoli heads. Otherwise, they just look like nice landscaping.”

Frank has another reason for growing his own crops. “I don’t know why, maybe everything’s fresher but it takes half the time to steam my own broccoli than store bought.”

“I have to watch out for beetles and mold in late spring but otherwise they’re low maintenance most of the year.”

Frank invested in seedling packs that contained nine plants.

Seedlings cost about $4 a pack. That $4

investment yielded over 2,000 Brussels sprouts in one season. But the next batch won’t be ready until February.

The south side of his house faces the side yard of his neighbor.

“I planted multiple rows of onions at the end of October (which is the best time to plant them) and in February or March they’ll be the size of tennis balls.”

Along a trellis he has ten tomato plants he bought as seedlings. He has half Better Boy and half Early Girl. Frank credits enriching his soil as the secret to his success.

“When they built my house in the 60’s they dredged the top foot of soil from the river. Unfortunately, the river is brackish and has a lot of salt in it. I’ve dug down when I was laying irrigation and have found old sea shells. I use my tiller to incorporate Jungle Growth soil mix into my garden. It helps enrich the soil.”

He also uses Vigoro Granular Fertilizer for Tomato and Vegetables and a blossom set.

“I don’t know why but my tomato blossoms seemed to fall off in the salt air. Someone recommended blossom set and I’ve been fine ever since.”

His hidden vegetables also include cauliflower and red cabbage. I asked Bonnie, Frank’s wife, what they planned to do with the red cabbage growing on their Continues on Page 38

January is a time for making, and sometimes breaking, New Year’s resolutions. Our ideal selves versus present reality face off in an epic battle of wits and attempted quits.

Keeping and following a long list of resolutions is grueling.

Instead of chasing big change, consider more modest modes of self improvement. Smaller, more reasonable ways to save money, time and effort can still bring positive changes into your life.

Modest Savings Extreme couponers save money by combing ads and coupons to get the best deal. These shoppers can spend hours combining coupons to spend pennies on the dollar. Sites such as TheKrazyCouponLady.com are great for helping first-timers learn how to maximize savings. Their inspirational tips and ideas will have you saving money in no time. Maybe you’re not ready to commit your time to scouring Sunday newspapers and clipping coupons or tracking sales. No problem. Krazy Coupon Lady’s site offers a searchable coupon database that includes printable and clipless (Smartphone redeemable) coupons. Download the app and you can search for coupons for individual products in your shopping cart at the store. Ignore the tabloid

magazine rack in the checkout aisle. Utilize extra time in the checkout line to check for coupons and save money.

Mini Habits New Year’s resolutions are usually plans to change a habit or gain a skill. Without a well developed plan for action, any resolution is mere fantasy. As writer Stephen Guise of “Mini Habits: Small Habits: Bigger Results”, describes it, new habits should be small and easy to accomplish.

This tiny goal ensures that habits can be done daily. He cited a fitness goal of one pushup daily as an example. This simple habit of one pushup daily becomes a pattern engrained in your mind.

Over time, the habit becomes routine. One pushup a day won’t make you very fit. But the routine of daily physical activity can blossom into two, five, fifteen, thirty minutes long daily fitness program. A program you made room in your life for, one minute at a time.

Anchoring Habits

automatically without even thinking. Habits like brushing our teeth or remembering to grab our house keys are ingrained memory. A major stumbling block to forming a new habit is remembering to do it. Charles Duhigg, author of “The Power of Habit,” suggests a trigger reminder or anchor to link a new habit to an old existing one. Here’s a good example.

Let’s say you want to save money and eat healthier. A homemade, nutritious lunch brought to work will accomplish both goals. The formation of a new habit (bringing lunch) can be linked to an old habit (leaving the house with your car keys).

If you leave your car keys (old habit), in the refrigerator next to your healthy lunch (new habit) you’ll be sure to remember your lunch box in the morning.

Let’s face it, we’re all busy.

There are so many places we want to go, people we want to meet and things we want to try, Until there’s more than twenty-four hours in a day, we need to value our time differently.

A few minutes a day of determined dedication to a new habit can create big changes. A small trickle of water over time can wear away a mighty mountain.

Small steps can be the pathway to big dreams.

A Forever Home is this Gem of a Dog’s New Year’s Resolution

A dog the shelter originally named “Toothless” may have had a very different path had fate not intervened.

On January 3, 2015 – now a full year ago – a female dog was picked up as a stray in Palm Bay. Even on her kennel card from the South Animal Care Center (SACC), she looks like a happy, friendly girl who is a real people-pleaser.

Several months later, during some planned renovations at SACC, some of the shelter dogs were temporarily housed at Dog Spot Hotel in Melbourne. Toothless was one of them, and during that time Dog Spot owner Anna Jayne fell in love with her affectionate personality. Jayne decided she could not send her back to the shelter so she decided she could stay at Dog Spot, renaming her Pearl to reflect her gem of a disposition around all people.

Over the past months that Pearl has been in boarding at Dog Spot, Friends for Animals Sanctuary (FFAS) has taken Pearl under their wing in the hopes of getting her adopted into a loving home. Dog Spot is one of FFAS’s community partners and provides housing for FFAS dogs when, for example, a foster family falls through or an adopted dog is unexpectedly returned. So helping get Pearl adopted is a task the rescue happily takes on.

Pearl is a Black Mouth Cur mix, a little over five years old, and just the right size at around 45 pounds. Because she came into the shelter as a stray there is not much

information about her background. But the scars on Pearl’s face and legs indicate that Pearl most likely had a tough past and may have been used as a bait dog or as part of a fighting ring. Her scars help explain why she is not friendly with other dogs and must be the only pet in the home.

But whatever Pearl’s feelings are toward other pups, she is social, gentle and loving with all the people she meets – both young and old. Pearl is frequently the belle of the ball at FFAS adoption events, seeking people to pet her and children to give gentle kisses to. Pearl’s patient, kind disposition toward people was readily apparent at a recent FFAS photo shoot where she got to play dress-up. Despite being adorned in hats, tiaras, boas, sunglasses, and even a string of pearls, she loved the attention and gave kisses to her handlers during each costume change.

The new year is beginning with Pearl marking her one-year anniversary without a home of her own. She is always affectionate and delighted to see her favorite humans, but what she really wants is one special individual or family to call her own and provide an outlet for her boundless love. All she needs is the chance!

Everyone needs a distraction some- no real intentions in the beginning, I just times and my imagination is really wanted to collect for myself. Then after a few faces popped up when I was hanging with good at taking me away.

When I don’t even notice it, I find myself chuckling over something that the quick eye wouldn’t see. While on walks in nature or on a stroll down the grocery isle, faces come to me out of the strangest things. The world is obviously trying to tell me something…

Smile, laugh!

After many random experiences I decided to start talking pictures of these faces. I had

some young bloods, I decided it may be cool to start collecting pictures to create a children’s book.

Laughter, happiness and imagination needs to be spread as much as possible and this is one of the easiest ways. Albert Einstein said “Imagination is more important than knowledge,” and I couldn’t agree more.

On Premise Craft Brand Manager This will be a new column featuring different beers that you can purchase around the Space Coast. Here is a brief history on the company I work for and myself; so we can get more acquainted.

Carroll Distributing Company 1960-present The beginning of our beer adventure takes us back to 1960. With about 111,000 thirsty residents here in Brevard and the “Race to the Moon” going on, Chad Carroll wa s awa rd e d t h e A n h e u s e r- B u s c h wholesaler for Brevard County by Gussie Busch after years of running a small AB wholesaler in Southern Illinois for several years. He was a true entrepreneur and his dedication to his customers has helped keep all of our glasses full to this day.

We are a local, family owned small business serving Brevard and part of Indian River Counties only. Carroll Distributing employs around 140 Brevard County residents thanks to Joann and Mike Eubank. Mr. Carroll's daughter Joann took over the family business in the mid 90’s.

Proceeded by her son Mike in the early 2000’s who now runs the company today.

Mike and his mother have carried on a true family tradition of not only taking care of their customers, but giving back to the local community. More importantly, they created a family environment that has kept a large number of long term employees (The Carroll Family). We have to thank the many beer consumers of Brevard and Indian River Counties for years of success as well as our valued employees.

I myself, am a third generation Carroll Distributing employee . If someone were to say I have one of the best jobs a person could have, I would have to agree. I get to travel to breweries, drink beer, help educate people on the industry, work with my father, be apart of the Carroll Family and give back to the Space Coast. Oh, and did I mention drink beer?

Okay that’s enough about us, on to what brought us here.

Our first stop on this epic beer journey is going to pay homage to one beer this month. This is the beer that got us here today and will continue to be a big part of what allows us to keep bringing you new beers to the market. For years our customers have known and described us by one phrase even though we bring many different beers to the market “ The Budman”. This is a phrase we hold dear to our hearts; not everyone can be a Budman.

The Great American Lager Budweiser Known as "The King of Beers," Budweiser was first introduced by Adolphus Busch in 1876 and is still brewed with the same high standards today. Budweiser is a mediumbodied, flavorful, crisp American-style lager. They say that it’s always darkest before the dawn.

Aurora is a Latin word for dawn. Maybe Aurora Street is the appropriate location for a center who provides a light for so many.

The Central Brevard Sharing Center (CBSC) was founded in 1978 by a group of concerned citizens. Originally, local churches banded together to form the sharing aspect of it. They raised money to provide clothing, non-perishable food and eventually a daily meal program. Over 37 years later, there’s still a need for their services.

David Brubaker, CEO of CBSC, showed me his badge when we first met. He pointed to a symbol of a steaming soup bowl, shirt and house. “The logo shows what we’re all about.”

The Emergency Food Pantry Program Brubaker gave me a tour of their facilities. We started in a huge storeroom that was filled floor to ceiling with cans and shelves labeled according to their contents.

“This is an emergency food pantry program.

We provide emergency food every 60 days. Each person that comes in makes a request based on the size of their family.”

Brubaker pointed to a clipboard that hung on the wall.

“Today alone we have a family of six, another of five, and a few single individuals. Yesterday, we fed over a 100 people. We receive the majority of our cans from food drives. The latest one was run by the Boy Scouts in November.”

CBSC also participates in the Grocery Alliance program that provides surplus food from area grocery stores. Local participating grocery stores donate food that’s past its sell-by-date but is still fresh. Through CBSC’s partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and local grocery stores, area food pantries receive the

donated food.

Brubaker opened a mammoth walk-in cooler.

The walls were lined with produce boxes full of fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. One wall was full of potatoes and avocados.

“We have volunteers who go to Publix four days a week just for bread, pastries, produce and odds and ends. We pick food up in a freezer truck. You have to have a special vehicle. We were given a freezer truck about two and half years ago. Since then that program alone generates 15 to 20 thousand pounds of food, per month. Most of it’s perishable. We distribute it to those in need or serve it in our kitchen.”

Directly across from the produce cooler is a well-stocked freezer full of different cuts of meat still in their original store wrappers.

“Our partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank allows us to go to Aldis and Wal-Mart as well. We get frozen items, meat and eggs. We get quality meats that are coming out of sale date.

The best part of this program is that it’s totally manned by volunteers.”

The Children’s Bag Pack Feeding Program CBSC also has a Children’s Bag Pack Feeding Program which provides fozod over the weekend for food insecure children and their families.

SHARING CENTER

“Each weekend, while schools in session, we distribute 100 bags to six or seven different schools.

It’s given to the family of a child who has a home with empty cupboards. Each bag consists of a box of cereal, bread, peanut butter and jelly, pudding, Hamburger Helper. There’s also apple sauce and Spaghetti O’s, things like that. It’s enough things to last the weekend or if you’re really frugal, three days. “ We then toured their dry storage room lined with boxes labeled with popular snack brands.

“We also partner with different vending folks.

This overstock can’t go into a vending machine.

We incorporate the snacks into our daily lunch programs. We’re all about recycling. It’s important that nothing goes to waste.”

The Community Kitchen We made our way into a small but organized kitchen full of smiling faces. Pots, pans and spices lined the walls as we entered the kitchen at the start of lunch service.

Brubaker remarked, “I like to tell people, we call it a soup kitchen, but we rarely serve soup. Our kitchen is the only place you can come and be guaranteed a meal. I know that a lot of people ask if the remoteness of our location is a problem. We partner with churches like Riverside Presbyterian and the Cocoa Beach Community Church. They provide referrals and a bus pass to come here.

People receive food or whatever they’re coming for and then we give them a return bus ticket. It’s a partnership to provide services to those who can’t travel to us.”

Kitchen helper Wesley Smith explained the program. “Monday through Saturday, we feed 25 to 170 people hot meals between 11am and 1pm. Sunday we do bag lunches from 2pm to 3pm. Meat, starch, vegetable, hot rolls, cakes and pies and a drink. A whole meal. Today we have chicken patties, noodles, hot rolls and grape KoolAid. We build our menus around what we have on hand and we have hot dogs available daily for children who come.”

Smith raved about his job, “I’m doing what I love and thankful I can do it.

The need is there. A place that serves food seven days a week. We get a pretty good turn out. We’ve been open for a little over 30 minutes and already have served 50. Not bad.”

Brubaker noted,“ We do service a lot of families with children. That’s our number one misnomer.

People think we only help the (adult) homeless.” However, CBSC also helps food insecure families, people who work but can’t consistently stretch their paychecks to feed their families.

• Complete and sign Client Assistance Form • Household representative must present a picture ID and provide an original Social Security card for every member in the household (every time you apply).

• Households will be eligible for emergency food assistance no more than every 60 days.

If you are not sure if you meet the time requirements you may call 631-0306 and staff will provide that information.

A lot of people think we’re enabling and that they depend on us. People do depend on us but only when there is nothing else.”

SHANE EDGAR

Skilled Labor

with I.C. Air

I met Shane Edgar while he was fixing a fridge in the hot kitchen of the Tiny Turtle.

The air was seasoned with the tangy spice of a sofrito bowl prepared earlier by Moises, the chef. The short in the fridge took only five minutes to fix. It was quick work for the air conditioning technician with 15 years of experience who also happens to be an ex-chef.

Shane discovered the importance of refrigeration years ago while working in restaurants.

“I was working as a chef and realized the most expensive thing to fix in a restaurant was the refrigeration. My step-dad wanted me to learn a trade. He talked me into air conditioning and refrigeration.

It was a good fit.”

As a Marine, Shane utilized the GI Bill to pay for school. He attended a two year, 3,000 hour certification program offered by Santa Fe College’s School of Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Heat Technology in Gainesville. He worked at several local air conditioning companies such as Steve Hoskins Air Conditioning, American Air and Heat, and USHAC Home Buyers before he went after his Certified Mechanical Contractor License for the state of Florida.

In 2012, he got his Mechanical certification. “I thought I bombed it. There were a hundred people that took it with me.

Electricians, carpenters, general contractors, plumbers. [After the test] I kept seeing these packets being passed out. The guy handing them out kept telling them, ‘Sorry, read the packet to see when you can retest.’ I started planning to retake the test. Then it’s my turn and he hands me a packet. ‘Congratulations, you passed.’ I asked him how he knew. ‘The thickness of the packet. The thicker packets contain retesting information. The thin packets only have your certificate.’ I couldn’t believe it, I passed it the first time.”

Over the last few years he’s developed a client base of local restaurants and bars.

“I put in air conditioning for the Fat Donkey (Ice Cream Shop) here in Cocoa Beach. Coastal Produce, Tiny Turtle, Jazzy’s Mainely Lobster, Frozen Heads, Fat Snook and Surfinista are all commercial customers. But I try to work with whoever calls me.”

Shane enjoys working for local restaurants. He joked, “My best calls are when someone forgets to do something simple. Bartenders love to unplug Kegerators to plug in their phones. Then they wonder why the beer’s warm.”

Shane is dedicated to saving his clients money. “I try to keep people’s equipment working for as long as possible. As long as the compressor is working and the coil isn’t leaking too much they’re usually happy. Clients usually tell me when it’s time to get new equipment.” Shane explained the most common thing people forget. “I’d have to say it’s lack of maintenance. If you don’t clean your coils, they work harder. You also need to clean your drains.”

A tip for winter. “I get so many calls in the winter. People wait till the coldest day to check their heater. Do yourself a favor and check your heater before the heating season, run it for an hour to burn off any dust or buildup. It gets dusty and moldy. Turn it on for an hour and burn the junk off the coil. Heating coils are like a toaster oven. When you burn off this buildup it’s going to stink up the house. Pick a nice cool day when you don’t mind opening the

windows and air out the house. I get tons of panicked calls when a cold front comes in.”

Shane offered advice for entrepreneurs just getting into business for themselves. “Have a business plan. Be frugal. Roll money back into the business. I got a loan from my brother that really help me out. I used a lot of word of mouth when I first started. I worked with a lot of friends of a friend. It was a good way to pre-screen customers. Sometimes, people don’t like to pay you.

I’d also say, don’t get greedy. Let the business pay you. Let the business be its own entity. I work for I.C. Air.” Shane was eager to thank the man who helped him launch his business.

“I want to thank my brother, Jeremy Edgar. He loaned me the money to start my business. I was lucky he was in the position to offer me the loan. I’m also lucky that he had faith in me. Not everyone has someone like that in their life.”

ORGANIC

Want to know who is growing your food?

Community Supported Agriculture is a national program that links independent farmers to customers by allowing individuals to prepay for a share of whatever the farm produces. The farmer gets resources upfront to help defray growing costs and consumers build a relationship with ‘their’ farmer as the season progresses from seedling to a weekly basket of produce.

Many Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms sell only the products from a single farm. This limits the variety and availability of items as well as the number of members they can serve. Florida Fields to Forks (F2F) is a local CSA farm which brings together ‘beyond organic’ produce, eggs, meat and dairy products, and much more. Everything is curated from

partner farms and ranches here in Florida. In this way, F2F can serve an ever growing number of loyal members.

The F2F farm in Malabar is owned and operated by Jan Pence and her son Brock Hall. They aim to serve discerning consumers in search of food containing all the flavor, health and nutritional values Mother Nature intended. This means locally sourced and sustainably farmed produce, free range organic eggs and boutique meats that are humanely raised, with all organic inputs, Non-GMO feeds, and processed to Animal Welfare Approved standards. These are the “most rigorous standards for farm animal welfare and environmental sustainability currently in use by any U.S. farm program.” You can go to their

website for full information but Jan and Brock were kind enough to take time to give us a personal tour and chat about their unique business.

Jan explained that ‘beyond organic’ involves carefully selected partner farmers and ranchers who produce the diverse products F2F is able to offer all year round. Partners must meet their stringent beyond organic standards. Jan explained that she doesn’t stop at the USDA certification since there are so many exemptions allowed for the seller, but some of which are not so desirable for the consumer. Instead, she and Brock carefully source produce from farms with well-developed organic soils, so produce contains all the natural and essential phytonutrients they should. Ranchers not only commit to providing organic Non-GMO feed, but they must also avoid hormones, antibiotics and other chemicals.

Like other CSAs, members can buy shares of a variety of produce and meats selected by the farmer at a predetermined price. What makes F2F unique is the variety of product categories you can choose from, and you buy only what you need. A basket is filled with beyond organically grown and raised produce. However, when local produce isn’t in season, fruit and vegetables are purchased from Global Organics in Sarasota.

The goal is to put together a share that has the

most nutrient-rich, healthiest, and tastiest produce available, at a competitive price.

For the carnivore, F2F has lots of options. In every case, the adage ‘you are what you eat’ holds for livestock as it does for us. The cows, pigs, lambs and poultry are pasture raised and hormone, growth supplement, and antibiotic free.

The beef is 100% grass fed and finished Angus and Angus-Wagyu while the pork is Berkshire and Mangalitsa-Berkshire, heirloom breeds desired for their full flavor and excellent larding.

Their Katahdin lamb has a more delicate flavor than commercial breeds. Game hens, holiday turkeys and eggs are also beyond organic.

Animals are individually processed and cuts are commercially flash frozen and wrapped so you are confident that your share has only been handled once. F2F sells all the cuts from each animal but deliberately limits the number of their restaurant customers since chefs generally want only the prime cuts. A wide range of meat shares is available, but to keep prices down, F2F includes a variety of cuts. Since every carcass yields a mix of prime and ‘not so much’, their website provides useful charts showing where the various cuts come from. Shakti

Shakti is a Cocoa Beach favorite with big ambition and the motivation to keep moving forward.

The guys – Rob Surowicz (guitar & lead vocals), Art Winstanley(drums), Bobby Durr (percussion), and Ryan Styer (saxophone) – sat down to speak with me before a show at Cocoa Beach Sports Pub for Ladies Night. They are a relatively new band, but they are making waves with music lovers and venues around Brevard County.

The name Shakti was inspired by “Om Shaki Om”, a song by one of Rob’s favorite artists, Trevor Hall. When Rob formed the band with Bobby they felt the name worked perfectly. Rob and Bobby met about nine months ago, when Rob was filling in as the host at Venice’s Open Mic night in Cocoa Beach. Bobby was the only musician who showed, so he and Rob then took over the show for the night. Ryan played with the two at Cocoa Beach Sports Pub one night and then kept playing together, two shows a week right off the bat. Ryan has been playing open mics for almost ten years. Art met Rob four years ago, jamming every now and then. Art originally played bass before taking over as drummer.

Shakti plans to add bassist Stephen Coats – who will be working with Rob and Bobby “to get him up to speed and then it will be a complete project,” said Rob. “We’re really excited.”

Understandable.

Shakti may be a new band on the scene, but they are booking more shows and the crowds keep getting thicker. They are booked for the next season of Jamaican Me Crazy at Mambos – in large part due to the help of their friend J.P. Sakson, who they want to give a big shout-out for all his hard work. Many of their shows have been in Cocoa Beach, most recently at Slow ‘N’ Low. But they have been booking all around Brevard County.

On January 27, they will be at The Boondocks Live in Melbourne with Part One Tribe, Bullet Dodgers, Coastal Breed, and Bumping Uglies.

Over the next 24 months, Shakti wants to tour.

“We want to start off with a small tour, just an East Coast, three-week tour,” said Rob. “Maybe up to New York and back.”

Before touring, they plan on releasing an EP that they will be producing themselves with the help of a sound engineer.

“We have a ton of originals,” said Rob, “but we have two that we usually use in our shows because they’re in that funky fusion genre we’re going for.

We’re almost done with our third song, and our EP will be coming out in the next couple months.

We’ll have about a five song EP to start.”

The name of those three songs? “I Wonder”, “Forever Alone”, and “Melodic Flowy.”

Always the entertainers, their set lists are throwbacks that everyone knows and loves. It’s music to get down to on the dance floor and rattle off the lyrics with Rob while enjoying Shakti’s original twist on known songs.

“We like to go for the old school rap,” said Rob. “It started off as a joke, honestly, but people really seem to love it, especially the college kids. We do everything from alternative 90s to reggae to funky rap.”

“We try to entertain and create a positive message, so people can come out to the show and have a good time with good music. It’s a fusion, so even though it’s covers, our covers are never like the originals,” said Ryan.

“We change up all the chord progressions. The way the melody is sung, it is all different from the original; we do it on purpose,” agreed Rob.

When people say they like Miles Davis, it’s important to ask, which Miles? The dead sexy, restrained “Kind of Blue”, Miles, the agitated swingin’ bop Miles, or perhaps even the late 60’s fusion freakout Miles? Each one has its merits but most Miles aficionados lean harder to one period more than another.

This four CD set documents Davis over 20 years of performances at The Newport Jazz Festival. The 1955 show is introduced by none other than Duke Ellington and he’s accompanied by Thelonius Monk on piano. The set feels like a cautious seatof-the-pants performance, but has some truly beautiful moments. For his 1958 set, he stands alongside John Coltrane and Bill Evans for a more confident delivery.

In 1967, Davis fronts a quintet with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams. Williams (on drums) drives the whole thing, pushing, always pushing. The band responds with a dizzying intensity. The final two discs are electric sets with selections from ‘69-’75 and will not be confused with his earlier work, the highlight being “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down.” The electric sets are intense in their own way. Volatile and aggressive, chaotic and nervy, this is Miles taking a leap in a different direction, because once he’d done something, there was no sense in repeating himself.

They say it’s important to keep active and intellectually engaged once you retire. For a lot of reasons. Good for the mind and body. Some people even use this time to embark on second career.

Such is the case with the four gents in Geezër, who have been inspired to use their golden years to make a sensational racket.

With a collective age of 327 (the youngest member is bassist Calvin Sizemore at 79), Geezer has decided to try their liver- spotted hands at this rock thing. With this, the band’s first and eponymous release, they take out their hearing aids, turn up the amps, and go for broke.

The band is in fine form on the classic “California Sun,” making sure it’s still a great number to cut a rug to. And “Silly Putty Buddy” is as mindlessly fun as you’d expect it to be. Leonard Geezer pulls off a jagged, and positively combustible solo here.

“Bad Luck” is probably the brightest moment on the disc. Pumped up and positive, despite the title, “Bad Luck” is a broad shouldered tune for the ages. “Teenage Tragedy” appears twice, in the finest traditions of Neil Young and other artists who do this sort of thing.

Once electric and then again acoustically. It’s a standout track and I’m favoring the quieter version.

Sarah Jean Balarezo, on backing vocals throughout the disc adds a great deal of depth and color to the performances. More altrock than anything else, the band deliver a youthful album of tunes that’s not to be missed. Geezer can go the distance so long as they catch a nap on the way.

Scholarship Success

Back in the late 1900’s, just before the turn of the century, I was in a college class with a nineteen-year-old who had received a scholarship for playing basketball.

He was cool and I thought it was awesome that he was using that opportunity to further his education. We had a writing class together (it hardly shows, I know), and we played hoops during a two hour break between classes. He schooled me. Always. We only knew each other for one semester, but I never forgot about him and what he said about his scholarship. “It’s not a fullride, but every little bit helps with tuition and books.”

Recently, I started a scholarship fund with the Community Foundation for Brevard. The fund is set up so that any skateboarder in 9th-12th grade can compete for scholarship money as the top prizes. We selected pro judges and ran the competition like we have for so many years, only this time it is

geared directly at high school skateboarders. On December 19, 2015, a solid crew of people helped me put this into motion. We hosted a contest at the Cocoa Beach Skate Park and skaters competed in the highly intense bowl competition. 1st Place Nick Wallace $1,000.00 scholarship, 2nd Place Killian Horne $750 scholarship, 3rd Place Miles McKinney $500 scholarship. After graduation, these three skaters will have up to one year to apply their prize money to a post-secondary institution. For instance, the scholarships can be used for community college, vocational school, culinary school, massage therapy school, university, etc.

All scholarship dollars are managed by the Community Foundation for Brevard. We will host another competition

in April, then again in the fall. We will continue with the fundraising and host two contests per year for student skaters alternating between a “bowl event” and a “street event”. Currently, there are no “college skate competitions”, teams, or universities to award any type of scholarships. Hopefully, one day they will. For now, we have the Skate To School contests and the Skate To School Scholarship Fund. As my friend the basketball player, told me, “It’s not a full-ride, but every little bit helps with tuition and books.”

save lives. Their best friend and fellow passionate Cocoa Beach soccer player, Rafe, passed away on the field due to a heart issue. They knew that they had to do something to help. They help student athletes who may have a latent heart condition like Rafe. The guys and their team always say “From Tragedy to Trajectory”. Never once forgetting their friend.. They’ve taken action to help other student athletes who have no idea they have a heart problem. Many may have been saved due to the screenings that Who We Play For provides. The New Year is with us and the Florida Surf Museum has had its first year under our new name. Although we are still a local museum with our roots in the Cocoa Beach and Space Coast surfing community, we have begun expanding our horizons toward the history of Florida Surfing in general, primarily through our website and Facebook pages. Please visit our website and please feel free to contribute stories and photos, even if it is just a picture and a few sentences.

By the time you read this, the museum-sponsored Surfing Santas of Cocoa Beach event will have been a huge success. Probably many of you were there to share in the fun and craziness. We are honored that the Trosset family has made the museum the focus of this event and we are proud to be supporting Mike Roger’s worthy charity, Grind for Life.

We continue into the new year with our current exhibits- Shortboard Evolution Revolution and Sidewalk Surfing/ The Florida Connection. Check them out on our website, or better yet, go to the museum and see the real thing. Upcoming exhibits for 2016 will include a show from noted surf photographer, Tony Aruzza, which combines surfboards from some

of the world’s most respected shapers with Tony’s unique photographic art.

We won’t be neglecting the important things- hanging out at the beach and partying.

Coming up again on March 26th will be the 16th Annual Florida State Paddleboard Championship. The Waterman’s Challenge will be held on June 4th and 5th and the Florida Women of the Waves gathering will be in October.

In the meantime, we will be having even more of our swap meet/cookouts that were so popular last summer.

I would like to start off with wishing everyone the best in this upcoming New Year! Really, when I think about it I can’t believe it’s 2016.

Life is going by so quick and living in our sub-tropical paradise, the days begin to blend together.

I also believe that blending is going on all around us, and it’s something we need to pay more attention to. One person that is paying attention to the changes and unification of the area is this month’s Boardrider, Ben Malik. Currently a Cocoa Beach Commissioner, he’s also a father, husband, and surfer. Ben shows that surfing is a blended mix of people from all walks of life. He is a leading force in integrating this community every single day. Talking with Ben is a delight, always giving a slight glimpse into the future.

During our talk I asked Ben to tell us a little about himself.

“I was born in Belgium. Dad was a retired journalist from Bangladesh, mom is a retired librarian from Belgium. We moved to Florida in 1975. I went to UF and graduated with a degree in Business Administration. I married my college sweetheart, Kelly, 24 years ago.

We have two children, Megan, 20, who is completing her AA at Eastern Florida State College, and Christopher, 15, a sophomore at CBHS. I can’t forget our dog, Holly. We live in South Cocoa Beach. I completed the Masters of Banking program at UF in 2015 and work as VP/

Commercial Banker for the Florida Bank of Commerce. I’m currently a Cocoa Beach City Commissioner, and I’ll be running for Mayor in 2016.”

I see Ben out in the water constantly and I asked him how he got involved in surfing. Ben said “I grew up in Lakeland and attended Lakeland High School. There was not much to do in the area in the early 80’s, so me and my friends used to drive over to Cocoa Beach during the summer to go to the 12th Street South.” Ben and his friends were hooked!

After college and careers, they still are. “After almost 20 years most of these guys now live on the West coast of Florida.

We still get together to surf in Cocoa Beach for an annual surfing reunion (as long as the surf is good and time permits!” he told me.

Knowing Ben on a personal and professional level, I get some insight on what kind of stress he goes through on a daily basis. I asked how does the surfing attitude and culture transcend into his career and day-to-day life?

“Surfing is very much a part of who I am and I will be a surfer until the day I die. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to some great surfing destinations. Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Baja

Mexico, Europe and Central America, meeting new friends and sharing waves! It offers me a sanctuary from the stresses of everyday life and is the best form of therapy while getting a great workout. Surfing keeps me alive, literally!”

While finishing up I asked Ben a few staple questions.

First, what does he look forward to in the New Year?

“Given the heart attack I suffered on July 5th last year while surfing at O’club, I am very thankful to be here and view every day as a blessing. My doctor said I had three 100% blockages in my LAD artery and 97% blockage in my right artery. Now, four stents later, I am paddling faster than ever.

Looking forward to another great year in Cocoa Beach with my family and friends!”

I also asked for some shout outs and advice for the groms.

Ben said, “My wife Kelly, for being the understanding spouse and letting me surf ! The awesome staff at Cape Canaveral Hospital & Dr. Palaniyandi for saving my life. 11th Street Crew, and Nicolle Williams for always taking pics and all the CB locals. Remember, surfing is a wonderful way to stay fit and make new friends. Enjoy the ocean!”

It was a pleasure to talk to Ben and I hope you all do the same soon.

A New Beginning!

Fishing Reports

I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas and New Year’s celebration. The fishing the last couple weeks has been awesome, both inshore and offshore.

Hopefully, it will stay that way for us throughout the month. The redfish bite has been extremely good both on artificial and on cut bait. Gulp shrimp and the gulp jerk shad in the new penny color are the way to go with a 1/8oz jig head or jerk bait hook. Try concentrating on fishing the sand holes.

With these cooler water temps, you can also find sea trout in the same area. I’ve been seeing a lot of nice schools of big sea trout ranging from 3-7lbs on the flats, so don’t be surprised if you come across some big ones! Cooler water also brings schools of black drum, which fight just as hard as redfish. Black drum can be a very dumb fish, but like I said, they put up a good fight. When they’re chewing good, it’s fun to get them to eat a fly. My favorite fly to use on them is just a simple black clouser with a little crystal flash with purple in it to give it some

contrast. It has worked well for me, so give it a try! They will also eat jigs and dead shrimp.

The offshore fishery has been a lot of fun. I’ve been having some good days catching

kingfish, cobia, and tripletail. The tripletail bite has been alright. There’s been a lot of small fish caught but those big ones are there also. Shrimp and

finger mullet are the way to go for bait. If you prefer jigging for them, then I would recommend using a 5/16oz jig head with a live shrimp on it. You can also find them on weed lines and other garbage debris that’s floating around.

The kingfish bite has also been extremely good, with a lot of fish in the 10lb range and some in the 25lb range. Slow trolling live bait and dead cigar minnows will bring them in. I also caught a few on ribbon fish, but the best was on the live bait.

2016 Resolution: Fish More!

If you are reading this, then the New Year has come and gone. The old adage is true, the years go by faster each year. All the more reason to try and fish more this year! No better time than the present, as they say.

Besides all those presents under the tree, December had a big surprise for the fishermen. There was a pretty significant run of dolphin last month which came as a welcome gift to many anglers. And doesn’t everybody enjoy a pleasant surprise? I know I do.

With a little luck, the dolphin run will continue into the New Year. It might be a little much to hope for, but a man can dream. The fishing will depend on the water temperature and if there’s a decent edge offshore. Most of the action last month was due to an edge that had horribly dirty water on one side, blue water on the other, and sargassum lined up along the edge. If this phenomenon continues, we should continue to see the hot action.

If the water turns into a

slow blend, the fish will be much more scattered. With the phins, there should be a few sails and an occasional wahoo or blackfin tuna.

The kingfishing last month

was a little bit hit or miss, but remained pretty steady for the most part. If the water temps remain above 70 degrees and not too dirty, the

action could get even better. The numbers of fish last month wasn’t exactly what we would expect, so I would expect to see some better numbers as the water cleans up a bit. Along with the kings, there should be some cobia, sailfish and blackfin tuna. Live bait will work best if you can find it, but spinning minnows should do the trick too.

The shallow water grouper complex is closed from Jan-

uary 1 through the end of April, so there’s not a whole lot to say about the bottom fishing. If you want to catch a gag just to say you caught one, it should be easy as pie after January 1! If you do still want to bottom fish, you might be able to find an amberjack or two, but they have been difficult to find for the last couple months.

Either way, make your New Year’s resolution to fish more and eat more fresh fish.

And not that crappy import garbage!

Paris Climate Talks During the first two weeks of December 2015, leaders from over 150 countries met in Paris to discuss averting climate change.

The event was highly anticipated because “never have the stakes been so high [because this is about the future of the planet, the future of life]” said French President Francois Hollande. The goal of the climate talks was to limit global temperature increase above 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit by each country making a specific pledge. The Paris agreement was accepted and is the first universal climate agreement in history. President Obama pledged to reduce emissions by 26 percent below 2005 levels by 2025 and asked other nations to do the same. India and France announced a one trillion dollar plan to promote solar power in developing nations. Smaller, poorer nations most negatively affected by climate change (rising sea levels) that contribute essentially nothing to carbon emissions are asking for 100 billion dollars in climate aid by 2020.

Although the Paris summit was more promising than any previous summit, climatologists say the pledges aren’t enough to avoid major consequences. The overwhelming consensus is that we have to do more. The problem of climate change is so massive that anything big enough to reverse it also has to be massive. So, we all need to work together.

Large corporations used Paris as a platform for economic advantage in a warming world. A handful of them paid significant amounts of money to help sponsor the conference, among them: energy companies, airlines, and auto makers. It would seem like an environmentalist’s nightmare, but these corporate players are doing so on the theory that climate change itself will disturb their businesses.

Warming temperatures threaten all sorts of industries and investors need better ways to assess it. This is evidence of an emerging shift in capital.

There is more than one way to address the problem of temperature rise other than solely reducing emissions. Perhaps there will be a new breakthrough in

energy storage making solar and wind more sufficient.

Lyndon Rive, CEO of SolarCity, wants to put a tax on carbon. He said, “Right now we are incentivizing the world to pollute. If you pay people to pollute, they’ll pollute. We are paying people to pollute now.” His idea is not to increase taxes, but to reduce sales tax by one percent and raise the carbon tax by that one percent. In 2008, British Columbia imposed a carbon tax and lowered income taxes. By 2011, green house gas emissions fell ten percent. Fiscal conservatives like these revenue-neutral carbon taxes because they lower other taxes and environmentalists like them because they lower carbon emissions.

Money spent on energy subsidies could also be diverted into renewable energy projects. It’s a better investment, both morally and financially.

Emissions from burning oil are making the planet hotter.

Since the emissions limits alone won’t stop climate change we need to make changes as individuals.

Reducing our use of plastics is a good start since they are made mostly from petrochemicals. We have a moral obligation to leave the planet in an inhabitable condition for our children and grandchildren.

12/21/2015 - CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla. -- The U.S. Air Force’s 45th Space Wing successfully supported the launch of a Falcon 9 rocket during its mission to put ORBCOMM’s OG2 communications satellites in to orbit Dec. 21 at 8:29 p.m. from Space Launch Complex 40 here.

Then just nine minutes following the launch was the first-ever successful landing of the Falcon 9’s first stage booster at Landing Zone 1 (formerly Complex 13) at 8:38 p.m. EST on CCAFS. “Today clearly placed the exclamation mark on 2015, by closing out another successful year for the Eastern Range in historic fashion,” said Brig. Gen. Wayne Monteith, 45th Space Wing commander and launch decision authority. “This launch and flyback speaks volumes to the hard work this team puts in every single day driving innovation and success. This was a first for us at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and I can’t even begin to describe the excitement the team feels right now having been a part of this historic first-stage rocket landing.”

The Falcon 9 launch was the second and final launch of ORBCOMM OG2 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The OG2 is a commercial satellite network uses low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide

reliable and cost-effective M2M communications to and from in the most remote areas of the world.

Before any spacecraft can launch from CCAFS, a combined team of military, government civilians and contractors from across the 45th SW provide the mission assurance to ensure a safe and successful lift-off for their range customers.

Eastern Range instrumentation provides radar tracking, telemetry, communications, command/control sites, camera and optical sites, and other support capabilities such as meteorology. Instrumentation is necessary to safely and successfully conduct civil, commercial, and national security spacelift operations and ballistic missile tests and evaluation. Album Reviews Thrash Metal was, and still is, a genre muddied with Captain Caveman sound-alike singers and a lot of uninspired songwriting, forgoing hooks for warmed over, tired riffs. The choice of Joey Belladonna, with his soaring voice, has always been key to Anthrax standing apart.

The punkishly frantic blast of “A.I.R”. feels like an animal trying to break free of a trap. ”Madhouse” is a more contracted groove and offers squealing leads. “Armed and Dangerous” sounds as crisp and irascible as ever. Frank credits his twenty years of gardening success to trial and error and a gardening course.

The illegitimate son of Apollo Creed (Jordan) aspires to become a boxer and enlists the help of Rocky Balboa (Stallone). Not having the “Italian Stallion” as the main character this time around was a bold choice and ultimately, the right one.

Rocky’s story has come full circle, now becoming a version of “Mick,” the aged trainer. With the introduction of Jordan’s character, “Creed” also continues Rocky’s story, acting somewhat as a sequel to “Rocky Balboa.” Bill Conti’s original Rocky theme is used but altered with a hip hop influence to help give the film a modern feel.

Tying together the continuing Rocky theme of overcoming life’s obstacles, the boxing matches will have you root for the good guy while the heartfelt scenes have you sympathizing with him.

The story and the characters are given depth so they seem real and not just cinematic plot devices. Stallone gives possibly his best performances since “Rocky”, playing an imperfect man proving that you don’t need to be a champion to be admired.

As Adonis himself is the product of the Rocky legacy, “Creed” resumes the spirit of the franchise while able to stand proudly and forging its own path.

Grade: A-

Based on a real life case, “Spotlight” focuses on a team of reporters (Keaton, Ruffalo, Banks) investigating reports of abuse in the Catholic Church.

At first the accusations are ineffectual but as victims come forward, a case is made that leads to staggering discoveries. There aren’t too many films centered on investigative reporters and the few that do aren’t as immersive as “Spotlight”. The film follows the individuals digging for answers and collecting evidence. It also shows how the case weighs on them personally. The entire cast is splendid but Ruffalo especially gives an impressive performance as the most involved and determined member of the group. As the reporters get closer to the truth, people try to cover up events, seal evidence and turn a blind eye, transforming what seems like an isolated incident into a huge religious conspiracy. Sometimes appalling acts are committed which in turn act as lessons on how to become better as a society. The topic will make people uncomfortable but the film, just like the reporters themselves, is compassionate and courageous to shine a light on such events. “Spotlight” is an important movie telling an important story with an important message.

Grade: B+

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Dir: Francis Lawrence

Stars:Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth After uniting the Districts, Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) marches the rebellion towards the Capitol.

Audiences who suffered through the uneventful Mockingjay Part 1 will be satisfied with the follow up. The second part contains all the action, emotion and drama absent from the first and has a much darker plot. Just as the first part dragged on, this movie spent 10-20 minutes on scenes that should’ve taken only five. The “Mockingjay” story didn’t need to be split into multiple parts. But in Hollywood, the only thing more powerful than revolution is the almighty dollar. The acting from Lawrence and Hutcherson shines as she plays a

girl distraught with loss and he plays a mentally troubled boy trying to distinguish fiction from reality. Many characters featured in the first part are now on the sidelines making brief appearances.

The journey has been tough for our characters and exciting for audiences. Unfortunately, the ending to the story falls flat, jumping to an epilogue with little to no resolve. “Mockingjay Part 2” is an impressive follow up to Part 1 but a poor conclusion to the series overall.
