The beachside sets the bar high.

A couple of months back I was at the Cocoa Beach Skate Park and I got inspired. There was a young grom who must have only been seven or eight years old. He was ripping up the bowl. At one point, he launched over the top of my head and came down to a soft smooth landing on the concrete below.

I was so impressed. He was tiny yet talented. I thought to myself, “Wow, he didn’t learn that overnight.” Then I realized when it comes to sports, we all set the bar pretty high. We are a community that strives for excellence. Quite a few top athletes call the beachside their home. There are professional golfers and X-Games champs, and not to brag but we are pretty damn good at creating some local surf legends too. In the August issue we highlight some local celebrities in our athletic community that are continuing to set the bar high.

While we are on the subject of setting the bar high, don’t forget to attend the 30th Annual Rich Salick Pro/Am Surf Festival to benefit the National Kidney Foundation. We hope this month’s sports issue inspires you to go out there and try some new things that our beachside community has to offer.

Strange Florida

A 1,000 Year Old Mystery Sent to dig up a broken water pipe at Highland Manor banquet and wedding venue in Apopka in 2005, a work crew unearthed more than what they came for. Buried beneath the ground were four stone statues, each weighing several hundred pounds.

Heavily adorned female figures and busts that looked to be done in an Asian style dumbfounded the locals. Surmised to be ‘glorified lawn art’, the statues were brought to the Museum of the Apopkans under the curatorship of Annie Belle Gillam.

After a decade of not knowing whether the statues were valuable or simply junk, Gilliam turned to one of the volunteers at the museum, Phyllis Olmstead, for advice as to whether to keep the statues or not. Olmstead then turned to social media, ultimately getting the attention of Allysa Peyton of the Harn Museum of Art. Curious, Peyton travelled to Apopka to view the statues.

What she found surprised her.

Made of volcanic rock, the statues hailed from Indonesia and could be as old as 1,000 years.

to Apopka, and right now the Harn Museum is combing lostart registries to try and determine if the statues were stolen from a private collection.

If they are not stolen and the figures are authentic, it is a possibility that the statues will be donated to the Harn Museum.

Taking Flight Protected since 1929, Seahorse Key off the Gulf Coast has been a thriving bird sanctuary for decades. Suddenly, in May of 2015 a mass exodus occurred. Thousands of the

avian residents abandoned the island, and scientists are clueless as to why.

Blue herons, snowy egrets, roseate spoonbills and multiple other species flocked to Seahorse Key for decades to use it as a nesting place, making it the largest bird colony on the Florida Gulf Coast.

The withdraw from the island is especially disconcerting because all of the species left at the same time. Nests were left empty, the eggs kicked to the ground.

Scientists have been testing multiple theories as to why this happened, including disease and predators. Thus far, nothing conclusive can be drawn from the tests.

Some birds have relocated to the nearby Snake Key, but they don’t account for the thousands that originally nested at Seahorse Key. Scientists are concerned that the loss of the birds will create a ripple effect, affecting the other inhabitants of the island.

Previous visitors to the island say it’s now like a different world, even a “dead zone.”

NKF “Rich Salick” Pro/Am Surf Festival 9/3-9/7: Founded as a means of raising money for dialysis patients 30 years ago, this surf festival has expanded year after year to become the largest charitable surfing festival in the world. It allows the NKF of Florida to provide support for those suffering from kidney disease, and proudly carries on the work of the Salick brothers.

Cocoa 8/14: 70th Anniversary of WWII’s End. This celebration and barbecue at the Space Coast Convention Center will mark the passing of 70 years since the end of World War II. Guests are encouraged to dress in 40’s period style clothing, and will witness music and exhibits that reflect the era.

Admission is free but donations will help send WWII veterans to Washington D.C. with the Space Coast Honor Flight. For more info, call 321-242-1235.

8/26: 4th Annual Tuxes & Tails Gala hosted by the Brevard Humane Society. This pet-friendly black tie affair will raise money for the ongoing renovation of the no-kill shelter in Cocoa. Cape Canaveral 8/31: Atlas V- MOUS 4Rocket Launch. United Launch Alliance will launch an Atlas 5 rocket for the U.S. Navy built by Lockheed Martin. The rocket is intended to improve ground communications for U.S. forces. The launch window opens at 4:07AM, Day and time are subject to change.

One Less Car Trip

Dad told us as teenagers to plan on spending at least $20 each time you get in the car. Perhaps $20 is a high estimate, but he had a point.

Every time you buckle up, the car depreciates, parts wear out, and gas burns. Obviously, the more you travel the more you spend . When contrasting car to bike mileage, the savings aren’t impressive. Riding a bike roughly saves you 57.5 cents a mile. This small savings probably won’t motivate you to put down car keys. Of course cars and bikes are difficult to compare. Most people prefer air conditioning and like to travel by car for farther distances.

Many people don’t live close enough to work or school to ride a bike full-time. If you own both a car and a bike, what difference would one less car trip make?

Many non-fiction sports books offer a glimpse into a professional’s rise from obscurity to stardom. One example would be “Undisputed Truth” by Mike Tyson, which chronicles his battle from being bullied to becoming a boxer. Most inspirational sports stories begin at the beginning, and there are very A U G U ST 2015

few that start with a previously out of shape, 40-something man bursting onto an exclusive sport scene.

Rich Roll proved that with good health, talent and determination, anyone can snatch glory from the jaws of inactivity.

In the first few chapters Roll is a former college athlete who settled

car, the smell of flowers, the sea breeze, and the roar of the ocean can be missed. Cars dampen these experiences. A good bike ride can be a bonding experience for a family and provides opportunities to meet new people, or even pets.

Bikes won’t save you $20 every time you drive to the corner store. They grant small gains that are easy to miss. Cars are convenient, air conditioned and usually our default option.

But just one less four mile car trip every week for a year would save $119.60 at minimum and burn 6,656 calories. The gas saved would also prevent 131.33 pounds of CO2 from being added to our atmosphere.

Maybe the benefits won’t save the world or help you retire, but it might remind you how lucky we are to live here. We live in a screen saver picture and forget to savor it.

Clean Clay Pots Spring flowers seldom last through the summer. Ditch wilted flowers and clean out clay pots. Old clay pots can look like new with a wash.

Freshen wilted plants with succulents that can take the hot weather. Add succulents such as portulaca around mail boxes or flower beds that need a spot of color.

Years ago, I sparked a conversation with a woman at a garden center. My cart was full of flowers to plant. Pointing at my cart, she said, “You do know it’s summer, right?”

I nodded. She smiled and added, “I have a rule during late summer. I only water.” It was good advice that has taken me a few years to embrace. Planting flowers in late summer is like deciding to bake cookies when your air conditioner is broken.

It’s just too hot and nothing turns out right. During late summer, consider taking a backyard timeout. Do nothing but the minimum maintenance until late September. The front yard might be unavoidable but you can take a break in the backyard. If your green thumb is still itchy, here are few ideas to keep you occupied during the magma-infused dog days of summer.

Recently, I completed a personal 21-day challenge to eat at least one raw meal a day. This turned into two a day and by the end of it I decided to carry on with my new lifestyle because I feel better and I’m actually losing weight.

Here are two recipes that are great for the summer heat, sweet and spicy, and oh so healthy.

Chilled Mango Curry Coconut Soup 1 large mango, peeled and seed removed 1 cup coconut water 2 tbsp. curry powder Cayenne pepper and Himalayan sea salt to taste Blend all ingredients until smooth, and chill in refrigerator for two to three hours.

Garnish with chopped purple onion and cilantro and add a side of hot sauce! Serve with a salad, cashews and radishes.

This former spin instructor now guides beer enthusiasts on a journey toward their perfect beer. During her time off, she strives to achieve her dream of being a flight attendant for Delta Airlines.

What do you do in your spare time?

I have an extreme travel bug, and love searching for the perfect beer. I am extremely grateful to be the Project Manager and Event Coordinator for The Village Idiot. We recently had the first annual 5K for the Village Idiot called “The Village Has Lost Its Idiot”, where we raised funds for Volunteer America and Wounded Warriors of Brevard.

The next run is April 1, 2016.

Between you and me, I’m also working on a fun sports-related event here in August which may include obstacles for all skill sets.

Where do you live now? For how long have you lived there?

My mother, son and I live in Rockledge, a half a mile from the Village Idiot Pub. I have lived there for about six months now.

I previously lived in Port Saint John for ten years before moving to Rockledge.

What do you love most about working beachside?

I love working in such a tightknit community where the regulars enjoy their beer and wine and feel completely at home. When they haven’t stopped by for a while they are homesick!

What might readers be surprised to know about you?

I am a complete workaholic; I used to work five jobs at one point. I now feel content having one job at The Village Idiot.

What’s your favorite thing about tending bar?

My favorite thing about tending bar is pleasing every customer every time.

Least favorite thing?

My least favorite thing is being unable to please everyone every time. I take pride in ensuring everyone who visits the Idiot has a pleasant and memorable time. I want them to leave with happy memories.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve witnessed from behind the bar?

Recently, there were ten CrossFitters who did Burpees (jumping squats) until there was only

Al Pacino and the entire Star Trek character universe. I like to be busy.

Which one would you love to kick out?

Hitler. I would love to serve him for a while, instigate his disgusting nonsense, and then throw a beer in his face and kick him out. I could say that would be an experience.

What would you order for your last meal?

I’m trying my hardest to be vegan. I’ve been vegetarian for twenty-seven years, but my last meal would be a triple-layered grilled cheese with French fries from Five Guys with a side of ranch from Melting Pot. Also, a double IPA on the side. Boom.

What would you like to come back as in your next life?

A unicorn or a nymph (fairy).

Any parting words of wisdom?

Possibilities are endless.

Larry’s Chicken Shack Restaurant ofthe Month Larry Mullin, a local now for over 19 years, loves fried chicken. The only problem he had with the Space Coast? There were no sit-down fried chicken places around.

Kentucky Fried Chicken left the beach over three years ago, leaving a void. The only choice was a national fast food chain on Merritt Island. Larry saw an opportunity, and shortly after opened Larry’s Chicken Shack in Port Canaveral. “Spending time in Gulfport, Mississippi area inspired me,” explained Larry. “I have a secret recipe that’s the best! We have a good

product, a unique clean place with great employees, and business is great!”

Opened just about six months ago, the old little bar (formerly Kay’s) had gone through a total transformation and entire remodel. “It’s a bright and cheerful place,” Larry said with a smile. The fresh yellow paint on the outside of the building stands out

Originally a poor man’s street food in the Middle East, falafel is now found all across the globe.

This fried veggie ball is crunchy on the outside and warm, almost creamy, on the inside. They are heavily spiced for an amazing taste. Falafel contains chickpeas and is a great source of protein for vegetarians and vegans. Chef Hamed explains, “A falafel can vary depending on where in the Middle East the recipe comes from. This is my family’s recipe; we are from Lebanon and use lots of spice. Here at Pita Paradise, the falafel is definitely one of our most popular dishes. We sell about 250 pieces each week.”

While I was at Pita Paradise, a customer ordered the falafel appetizer . I overheard her as out of the blue she exclaimed “This is the best falafel I have ever had, and I’ve eaten falafel all over the country.” Spread the word!

have a great 12-speaker sound system. Cold air conditioning and a clean smell is the first thing you’ll notice. There is a great back porch complete with picnic tables, big screen TV and fire pit. It is a place with an island feel, and it’s so comfortable you’ll forget you’re not in your own home.

The newest item on the menu is chicken and waffles! Yes, I said waffles—Belgian waffles to be exact. “It’s the newest of culinary crazes, and a suggestion from one of our customers. Everyone loves them, it’s that sweet and salty thing,” Larry tells us. “We are looking to keep changing our menu,” he says.” The food is constantly evolving based on what people want.” Larry’s theory is that restaurants have to change to keep things fresh and interesting. Another new menu item, Chicken Sliders, were also inspired by a customer’s suggestion. Larry’s Chicken Shack has your standard fried chicken sides, but the potatoes logs are uniquely Larry’s. “We go through a couple cases per a week of Idaho

potatoes, sliced and freshly fried, hot and crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside” says Larry. Everything

is made fresh, there are no heat lamps or microwaves. Footlong hoagie sandwiches are also on the menu, made on the best rolls Larry could find.

Larry’s has six craft beers on tap as well as a huge selection of bottled beer, wine, sodas, ice tea and lemonade. “People love lemonade and fried chicken, it’s the perfect combination for

these hot summer days,” Larry tells us.

Specials are always changing, but they always have some of the cheapest beer prices in town. Currently a pint of Amber Bock is only $2.25 everyday, and ice cold Bud & Bud Light is always a deal at $2.75 a pint.

Because customer reviews are so important, Larry embraces them. “We are very proud of our reviews,” he exclaims, and it shows with all the positive feedback from Yelp and Facebook. Larry and his staff are doing things right; it’s well worth the trip. “We are working hard to have the best fried chicken in the State of Florida!” says Larry, and it shows!

Blend, adding water until mixture is soft. Add salt, sesame seeds, and spice and rest in refrigerator for several hours.

Form mixture into balls about the size of walnuts and fry in hot oil at 375 degrees. Serve hot with pita bread and garnish with lettuce, tomatoes, sour pickle spears and parsley.

Mitch Varnes of Smooth Running

It’s not often that you meet a sixth generation Floridan, but Mitch Varnes’ family has lived here since before Florida was even a state.

A man who always seems to be ahead of the curve, Mitch is a longtime runner, an engaged UCF alumnus, and the eco-conscious principal of Smooth Running, a race-registration website and marketing tool used to produce endurance events.

This Cocoa Beach native has been active for as long as he can remember. He started participating in events competitively in his twenties, and since then he has finished four marathons and many half-marathons and triathlons. He also co-founded the Surf Club at UCF with some friends in 1983.

Varnes credits his success to his experiences at the University of Central Florida. Last year, he was named 2014 Notable Knight for his contributions to the community as an alumni. “No one ever regrets getting a college degree, and I owe all the credit to UCF for allowing me to make it happen.

When I was a Junior at UCF, I was part of a NASA Internship called Co-Op and I was hired to be a spokesperson when I graduated.”

Varnes is still active with the school. “I still have a very close relationship with UCF and regularly have between 15-to40 Sports Management Interns helping out at our events.” His UCF professors supported and inspired him as well. “I was the first East Coast Editor of Surfing Magazine and worked that side job for ten years,” he said.

“I owe that experience to one of my UCF journalism professors who encouraged me to get into surfing journalism.”

His lifelong love of the outdoors motivated him to create an endurance production company whose goal is to preserve the environment. Varnes is very passionate about sustainability.

His Smooth Running website states that “Smooth Running strives to achieve the highest level of sustainability at all events and is recognized as one of the greenest producers of running and endurance events.

Its 2012 Melbourne & Beaches Music Marathon Weekend achieved its goal of Zero waste with all by products recycled and food items composted.”

“We focus on sustainable events. We compost and recycle wherever possible; with everything from banana peels and orange rinds to the 60,000 paper cups we use in the marathon weekend. We use biodegradable forks knives and plates. Our water jugs are recycled and we design signage and mile markers to last for several years.” Producing and creating these events offer many challenges. “Hard work, dedication, passion are key components for any business and especially so with putting together sporting

events. Those things and a lot of attention to detail.” Varnes enjoys sharing and showing off our community. “Our events directly benefit our businesses and community. Participants and their families shop at our stores and eat at the local restaurants,” he states.

“We design events to showcase Brevard in a way that many people never get to see. Our races are on the beach, in the waterways or over causeways.

With the Rocketman Florida Triathlon at Kennedy Space Center, our bike portion travels out around two space shuttle pads, past the Vehicle Assembly building and many of NASA’s space landmarks. There are so many cool places to host events around the Space Coast—you will never see us putting on a race in a parking lot, that is for sure.”

The next marathon on his calendar is the 2015 Cocoa Beach Half Marathon scheduled for Sunday, October 25th. The website is closed to race entry on the field but open for Virtual Run Registration through August 15, 2015. “We’ve a sold out the race to entrants from 30 states and 5 countries. Virtual races are relatively new and have evolved out of peoples interested in participating and getting a t-shirt and a medal.” Instead of running on the field the day of the race Continues on Page 34

Most people think that no good can come from fighting. Ever since 2012 though, Mountry (Trey) Robertson, his wife Natalie, and Coach Norm Johnson of the Cocoa Beach Fight Club have been proving that nothing could be further from the truth.

The tight-knit team led by Trey at the Cocoa Beach Fight Club (CBFC) uses Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other martial arts to help instill patience, discipline, self-esteem, and confidence into every person that walks through their doors. Members learn that they never have to accept failure or become compliant. If you believe in yourself, you can do anything you put your mind to.

Trey took some time to help us understand the different elements that go into running and being a member of the CBFC.

A ‘fight club’ may sound intimidating or aggressive to people not in the know. Can you tell us about both the mental and physical challenges that members of your gym experience?

It should sound intimidating, but for all good reasons! Living a healthy lifestyle is a daily fight. You need to look at your responsibility to eat well and exercise as a daily fight. What fight club means to me is to fight for your dreams, fight for what you believe in. Never

It started back in 2002 with two individuals, Tyler Moyer and KR Rubio. We trained on submissions and lots of ground work. About a year later I had the pleasure of meeting and training with the late kickboxing champion, Donnie Hair and local Okinawan Karate Sensei Phil Collins, two of the toughest coaches I’ve ever had.

About two years later I met Keith Mohan who trained out of Gracie Barra in Orlando, and this is when I fell in love with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In Cocoa Beach our fight club started out on some puzzle mats that were duck-taped together… Back then we weren’t using timers or bells, and the fight was over only when somebody tapped out. I haven’t stopped training since then, and we finally made a legitimate business out of it when we opened the CBFC in 2012.

I’m busy almost every moment, but waking up to my wife Natalie and our beautiful baby girl Mynina gives me all the inspiration and motivation I need to make it through the day.

You say circuit training is the most popular session at the gym. Can you tell us more about it?

Circuit training has been a stable curriculum since the opening of the CBFC. Anyone can come in and participate. It involves different timed workout stations where the participant moves from station to station (14 in total), spending approximately 2-3 minutes at each station. It’s a high intensity workout where you build muscle, coordination and cardio. It

Ten Years With the

Cocoa Beach Skate Park Loyal Beachside Resident readers are no strangers to the happenings at Cocoa Beach Skate Park.

Open for Business

We are lucky enough to get monthly reads from Scooter Newell. He keeps everybody posted on what’s going on at the park and in the skating community as a whole. Having just celebrated their 10 year anniversary in July, we decided it was a good time to revisit how the whole thing got started. We also want to touch on some of the more intangible benefits that come from the Cocoa Beach Skate Park.

Scooter grew up here, and therefore he’s had years to witness the evolution

of the skate scene in Cocoa Beach. “We had no park.

We had to paddle out to an island to ride a halfpipe with no pads, helmets, supervision or even permission from the ‘old guys’ like John Butler, John Mazziotti and a few others,” he tells us.

“One time, Sean Slater broke his wrist and had to deal with an arduous hike, canoe ride, and finally a car ride before getting to the hospital.” Skaters who didn’t feel like leaving the island had to have a more DIY approach. They

started building their own parks around town and getting as much practice in as possible before the city would tear it down.

In the early 2000’s, the concept of constructing a permanent skate park started to get serious attention. “It was an idea… initiated by a lot of people like Joey Spector (RIP), the Taylor’s, and many other families and supporters. Tony Sasso was on the City Commission at the time and was a huge advocate of the facility’s construction. After determining a location, meetings with the school board and park builders, it was completed and opened in July of 2005.”

Fast forward ten years, and the Cocoa Beach Skate Park is still going strong. Holding firm against difficulties such as extremely strict operating hours and the fickle Florida weather, the park is still able to flourish. Boasting a small shop with skateboards, accessories, some apparel and footwear, the park also offers both private and group lessons, and skate camp

during the summer. On a larger scale, CBSP puts on a ton of events like the “Surf N Turf ” skate and surf contest which benefits the NKF of Florida, and the Cocoa Beach Open Pro/AM bowl with a $5,000 purse sponsored

by Rusty’s and Coconuts. They’re also keeping up with modern technology.

Scooter tells us that they’ve “produced six live webcasts since May of 2014, and not too many parks are doing that for their contests.”

There is a whole lot more to the CBSP story than just what has to do with athletic ability.

It’s easy to watch a child work on a trick over and over until they can do it with their eyes closed.

What isn’t so easy to see are the ways the CBSP affects their lives outside the park. “Some kids learn how to read a clock at the skate park (the kind with hands). Kids learn how to count change,” Scooter explains. “Some kids have been bit by the gardening bug since we started our Skate Garden…

Last year we threw together a small event called “Diversity Day” where we invited all kids from the schools to come to the park to just hang out and celebrate individuality. It was an attempt to squash bullying and let the kids know that we all have had to deal with tough times as a teenager and that it is okay to be exactly who you are.”

This habit of focusing on more than just the sport is something that the CBSP plans to continue and elaborate upon in the future. Scooter is excited to partner with The Community Foundation for Brevard to start the “Skate to School” competition series, which will allow high school students to compete for scholarship opportunities. The program will begin in September of this year.

With skateboarding constantly becoming more popular among the masses, we asked Scooter for some parting words…

Something that could prove useful for those who are both just starting out and for those who’ve been skating for years. “Skateboarding… is about losing yourself and finding yourself at the same time while you embrace and defy gravity. It is about teetering on the edge of pain to experience pleasure.

It is individuality and creativity and dance. It is a balance of the mind, body and board. But most of all, it is always about having fun.” Bravo.

I always prefer to be the guest DJ instead of the House DJ. I am DJing select events once a month at Jamaikin Me Crazy at Mambo’s in Cocoa Beach.

I also do my yearly Dub Massive event at the Cocoa Beach Sandbar.

Tell me about how you were exposed to and or how you got into DJing. Do you play any other intruments and or produce your own beats?

Cocoa Beach’s Mark Longenecker pursues two forms of artistry, tattooing and DJing. Through his skill in the former and his love for the latter he has managed to become both proficient and profitable.

Originally from Medford, New Jersey, Longnecker is widely known as the owner of Endless Summer Tattoo. He recently took time out from his busy schedule to share insights on his other profession and passion, music.

How did you get into DJing and where do you perform?

I often get asked how long I have been DJing since I am more known for my tattooing. I usually am quick to say I have been DJing longer than I have been tattooing, and I have been tattooing for 21 years. I focused my career on tattooing and that is my passion in life. DJing has remained a lifelong hobby. The fact I never had to rely on DJing to pay my bills makes it very enjoyable for me and takes any of the stress out that a DJ job would have. Music acts I have opened for are Yellowman, Toots and the Maytals, Stephen Marley, Collie Buddz & Eek-a-Mouse.

I try to stay away from weekly gigs because it is hard to keep a fresh vibe on those and they can quickly go stale unless you rotate guest DJs.

I always played guitar and wrote music when I was young. My mother played guitar, banjo, fiddle and many bluegrass instruments when I was growing up and there were always live jam sessions at my house. My mission in college was to put together a great band with a fun party vibe. I started a band and immediately got booked with gigs at bars and house parties. I was singing and playing some rhythm guitar and a little trumpet. I was the front man of a band on the rise and living the dream. But times were changing, and I noticed people were becoming less and less interested in live music and more interested in the new “rave” DJ scene that was increasing in popularity at mach speeds. The techno music I had heard up until that point was terrible and I thought the whole DJ thing was ridiculous. I couldn’t understand why people would be more interested in listening to a DJ spin other people’s music when I was writing my own and playing it live. It made no sense to me and I started to hate the whole DJ thing. My musician friends and I went to go see and support one of our favorite local bands. The music was good but the vibe was dead because everyone, including the hot chicks, were at a house party where my DJ friends were spinning. We decided to go check out that party and my friends showed me what they were doing with the turntables and how they were creating their own unique mixes. They let me hear what was in the earphones and showed me all the possibilities of sounds and effects. It was that moment I realized a DJ was a musician and the turntable is an instrument of expression.

Who are some of you favorite DJs and musicians?

Many of the people I started DJing with over 20 years ago are still diehard DJs such as Archer, Norplant, TBM, Ransome and Mezmer. I would buy records out of the back of Norplant’s truck in the back alleys of Savannah, Georgia. I started spinning with electronic music and looked up to European DJs like Sasha and Digweed and really love Philly DJ Josh Wink. Then I started to discover Trip Hop and Breakbeats. I really looked up to DJ Icey and Baby Anne. Rabbit in the Moon was probably the most influential DJ act I have ever seen. The combination of art, design, music, costumes, theatrics and an amazing stage presence was unlike anything I have ever seen to this day. I always loved reggae, so when Jungle and Drum n Bass came out I felt that was really my vibe. I always loved the idea of a live MC alongside the DJ and LTJ Bukem was always one of my favorites in that genre.

Revolt!

–1984 Demos Royal Holland Volume Two: Flamingos Royal Holland

Independent Release, 2015

Cincinnati gives us Royal Holland, which may sound like the name of a cruise ship bound for the Caribbean. But no, it is the singer/songwriter behind this five song EP. It is a brilliant blend of sparkling folk melodies which suddenly burst into flat-out rockers.

“The Grave” opens up this collection. The music starts off timidly but with the second verse, Holland and the band take ownership of the song and the moment.

After a light and airy intro, “Flamingo” catches fire toward the end with a spirited, combustible lead. “Polaroid Blues” is a rollicking number sweetened by vocals extolling “She looks pretty good to me.”

Holland is a relatable everyman who doesn’t so much opt for storytelling as he does for conveying incidents most people can identify with. “My tears are engineers/they’re working overtime,” he sings easily on “These Mundane Lives.”

What Royal Holland needs to do with this smart, punchy collection of melodies is to continue his hard work with the tour eternal and allow everyone everywhere hear what he has to say, post haste.

This is picture perfect pop.

With enough jangle, distortion, and melody they could be the sort of act who can write the next batch of songs we would otherwise expect from Cheap Trick or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. In other thebeachsideresident.com

No Fraud

Six Weeks Records, 2015 “We play both types of music; punk and hardcore.”

One of my favorite lines ever uttered on stage came from the mouth of lead vocalist, Dan Destructo. No statement about No Fraud could be more true.

These songs were originally tracked as demos, so the quality is pretty thin. But this is what original hardcore was about.

No Fraud’s version of this was pure unfiltered attitude distilled through Florida’s mind numbing humidity, small town condescensions, and youthful frustration.

Punk was really too slow for these guys by the time they got around to grinding their axes.

Everything needed to be rougher.

Faster. Edgier. Thus punk morphed into hardcore.

The songs are all short, sturdy, sucker punches, meant to leave the listener uncertain and off balance.

“Revolt” demands the band to stay in third gear when really they want to let loose and blow the thing to pieces. “Another Part of the Machinery” shows No Fraud tenuously eyeballing expanding their musical horizons while still being true to their hardcore roots. There’s a tempo shift, the musicians stretch out more and it kills.

I’m partial to side two. It’s faster, dirtier, more unhinged. Everything feels like it’s about to come apart at the seams. Listening to something move at this speed is daunting. The faux country send up of “Venice Hillbillies” can be

well understood by anyone who dared to be strange or different in a small town.

If this is as close as you ever come to catching No Fraud live, it’s a brilliant portrayal. This band in full flight is more a force of nature than art.

No Fraud are hardcore legends who stuck to their ideals, and did things one way. Theirs.

If you’re just now getting hip, relax. You bought the record.

Play it till the grooves wear out.

Then get another one.

Lazy J And the Dirty Shuffle

Independent Release, 2015 There are four songs here, but you’ll wish there were more.

These four numbers are substantial and fleshy. The lead track, “’Til The Devil Knows I’m Dead,” comes on strong like a brawler, and then, with the agility of a speed skater, slips in and out with an unexpected gracefulness.

There are even hints of reggae and ska here. The way these blend allows space to work in their favor. Remember kids, it’s an insecure person who doesn’t know when to be quiet.

“Double Down Boogie,” is to remind you this is a Texas blues band after all. It’s the sort of number that’d be perfect for the next “Sons of Anarchy” knock off show someone is currently scheming.

“Let’s Let Love” features a wonderful guitar part. There’s an Allman Brothers/Dickey Betts-ish melodic lead which is tasty and soars effortlessly. If there was ever a song perfect for radio, it’s this one.

The field of blues-rock bands can be a crowded, middling and really milquetoast in nature.

Lazy J and the Dirty Shuffle pull far ahead of the largely undistinguished pack with exceptional songwriting and solid playing.

They’ve probably played more shows than you thought were humanly possible, and it shows with the confidence expressed.

Get Out Town of

Putting on the Ranch Ritz

By Emily Emerson even a western-themed ‘town center’ with laundry, apparel, and a general store flanked with live oaks.

Our group consisted of four adults and four children ranging from seven years old to eleven, and their attention immediately gravitated to the petting zoo and activity area replete with zip lines, mini golf, rock climbing wall, and mechanical bull.

Every Saturday night there is a rodeo followed by a street party. At the rodeo there was bull riding and horseback riders performing stunts, zooming around the perimeter of the corral while standing or half hanging off their horses. Children even participated in a calf-chasing activity. They dashed around trying to grab a ribbon from the tail of a scampering calf, amounting to about five minutes of chaos and laughter.

Although none of the rodeo entertainment was very daring, the show was captivating enough to hold the attention of the young and old alike.

Florida has a long history of ranching, spanning over 400 years. The industry is still thriving today, and only a short drive away from the beach allows you to see cattle gathering under sentinel palms in the distance.

Ranching is an integral aspect of the Florida economy and livelihood. It is also something that tends to be romanticized. There’s nothing wrong with people wanting to get a bit of exposure to ranching without getting their hands too dirty, and that is why there are places like Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo in Central Florida. Located just over an hour and a half from downtown Cocoa Beach, River Ranch is a great place for families to get away from the busyness of everyday life.

The resort is located down a winding road off of 60W, and guests are welcomed by statues of rearing stallions and signs proclaiming welcome in typical cowboy jargon.

Different accommodations are available, ranging from basic tent camping to private cabins to the elaborate ‘glamping’ opportunities. There’s

The party that followed was the highlight of the trip. Adults were able to sit back and relax with some drinks while the kids ran amok. They had a blast making friends, dancing, and ultimately exhausting themselves.

Guests have a bevy of entertainment options to fill their days with. There were activities like horseback riding, fishing in a catch-and-release pond, swamp buggy and fan boat rides, and golf. It is important to plan ahead and see what activities are available on what days as some are only available on weekends.

It’s also a good idea to take note of how much each activity costs.

The other thing to keep in mind is to plan on being on your own for a few meals. Westgate River Ranch has only a couple dining options, and it is a solid twenty minutes to half hour drive for other restaurants. Based on accommodations you can cook in your room or on charcoal grills, but pack accordingly!

The location offered beautiful and expansive views of the landscape, and offered tastes of ranch life with all the comforts of a resort. It’s perfect for a visit of two to three days, especially for people like me who haven’t been on a horse for roughly twenty years. Skating, Surfing, and Scholarships, Oh My!

Fall is upon us and for the skate park that means contest season is starting up again. I remember the first time I ever competed. It was 1985 at an indoor roller skating rink called “Pandemonium” in Orlando somewhere.

I was in a jam with two other skaters and I did my best to land my launchramp tricks. I hoped I would make the cut to the finals. I didn’t. I was bummed out a little bit at myself for not preparing enough. I didn’t know how to “compete-compete” I didn’t understand the need for a quality run based on maneuvers and style and difficulty. I was just a kid who could land a couple tricks and I thought that was enough to win. After my first public failure on my skateboard, I worked hard at our spots, progressing and trying to get better and grow. I gained experience with “fake” contests among my friends. I eagerly learned how to construct a good run from Bruce Walker and Chuck Dinkins. I stayed with it and eventually started placing in the top five then the top three then 1st or 2nd. I remember wanting to search out contests all over the state.

We’d drive hours to skate a parking lot set-up competition. And more often than not, there were only makeshift awards. Sometimes there were quality trophies, but no prizes like what is expected these days. Anyway, I still enjoy skating in contests. Mainly to challenge myself to create a run and

land everything, but without such a great emphasis on “winning”. These days I am enjoying hosting contests for skaters. We have some interesting ones coming up in August and September.

NKF Starting in August we kick off the National Kidney Foundation week with a skateboard contest. We will have Street and Bowl Divisions as well as the Surf n Turf. The Surf n Turf was started five years ago and is a skate contest (bowl) and surf combined event. Competitors earn points for both contests to determine a winner. The skateboarding will take place Aug 29th at the Skate Park. The surfing portion will happen at the NKF Surf Festival the following weekend (Sept 6th/7th) at the Cocoa Beach Pier. Skateboarding Scholarships Starting in September we will embark on a new journey in competitive skateboarding. We will have a new contest series specifically for high school students with scholarship money for the prizes. We teamed up with The Community Foundation for Brevard which is a 501c3 non-profit organization that specializes in managing scholarship funds. We are lucky to have them manage our scholarships! The Skate to School series is specifically for skaters between 9th and 12th grade and will be an open division series(no age groups). Each contest will have three scholarship winners. Skaters can earn scholarships each time they place in a contest and may earn multiple scholarships throughout their high school career. Students will be able to use their scholarship money for educational institutions like community colleges, vocational schools, culinary schools, universities, massage therapy schools and more. The goal is to help skateboarders further their education—just in case that pro deal never comes to fruition. Global Shark News Shout out to Mick Fanning on the World Surf League Championship Tour for dealing with a shark encounter during the finals at J-Bay South Africa. The sharks are always a possibility and we were stoked Kelly was already on the beach and that Mick walk away unharmed!

Oh Buoy!

Smack in the middle of a July flat spell, Brevard County surfers were hit with a double-dose of bad news: the 20-mile and 120-mile Canaveral buoys— those sacred heralds of wave size, period, and wind information—were scheduled to be taken offline, ostensibly in the spring.

The ramifications for amateur surf prognosticators were dire.

How were we expected to forecast the swells and to plan out our day-to-day lives without this vital information? Primitive methods were recalled: wind surface maps, satellite imagery, 976-SURF...

As of this writing, hope remains that the buoys will be saved, either by private space interests or other interested groups. Kickstarter, anyone?

The cost of maintaining the buoys is apparently $60,000 per year.

Buoy troubles aside, here’s this month’s Surf Museum news:

Fireworks Celebrations Cause Nationwide Pollution Spike

The pollution comes not just from community fireworks displays, but also from millions of private celebrations in front yards, streets and beaches around the country.

NOAA scientist Dian Seidel authored a report in the journal of Atmospheric Environment that found that average concentrations of microscopic particulate matter known as PM2.5 rose to 42% greater than on the days preceding and following the holiday. At the McMillan Reservoir in Washington, DC between 8 and 10 pm the concentration peaked at 400% above average levels. In Ogden, Utah the peak level at 10 pm was 3700% above average daily concentrations.

EPA health studies have shown a significant association between exposure to PM2.5 particulates and premature death from heart or lung disease. They are also known to aggravate asthma and other respiratory problems.

EPA rules allow short-term spikes in the PM2.5 if states demonstrate that the source was fireworks. However, the EPA does recommend that those with sensitivity to particulates limit their exposure by viewing fireworks from upwind—or as far away as possible and, “Be sure to have their quick relief medicine handy.”

Water pollution is another side effect of fireworks displays. Heavy metals give the explosions their characteristic colors. The smoke and dust produced in these explosions include barium to produce

brilliant greens, despite being both carcinogenic and radioactive.

Copper is used to produce blues,

even though they contain dioxins which have been linked to cancer.

Cadmium, lithium, antimony, rubidium, strontium, lead and potassium nitrate are also commonly used to produce different effects, even though they can cause a host of respiratory and other health problems.

Eventually all of the particulate and air contaminants end up in the water...either the ocean or the lakes, rivers and lagoons. And of course, fireworks displays are not limited to the 4th of July. According to The Ecologist, millennium celebrations in 2000 caused environmental pollution worldwide, filling the skies over populated areas with “carcinogenic sulphur compounds and airborne arsenic.”

The use of fireworks also deposits litter on the ground as well as into water bodies for miles around.

Walking the beach between 1st St N and 3rd St N in Cocoa Beach on July 5th produced thousands of fireworks tubes, hundreds of bottle rocket sticks, dozens of metal sparkler rods and uncountable litter from exploded pyrotechnics.

So, what are the solutions?

Communities can enforce their fireworks ordinances to limit use of banned devices trash left behind. Disney has replaced the explosive charges used to launch pyrotechnics with environmentally benign compressed air in their nightly displays. That is a step in the right direction.

Many public safety advocates and environmental groups would rather see the 4th of July and other holidays and events celebrated without the use of pyrotechnics. An obvious alternative is a laser light show that can wow a crowd with out the negative effects associated with fireworks. A compromise could be a mixture of each of the above.

The Mullet Run!!

Fall is almost here which means the mullet are starting to make their annual migration. This also brings on the spawning of bull redfish.

Well, the month of Independence Day has come and gone and I’m not exactly sure what to say about it.

I don’t watch the news much, but the little bit I heard about the 4th of July weekend has led me to one conclusion. I think the Darwin Awards should be given out in the middle of July after the random idiocy of the holiday events has been sorted out. I know people do stupid stuff every day, but the the 4th always brings that stellar combination of alcohol and explosives. Yeah America!!!

The fishing last month may not have been as entertaining as watching some drunk guy on the beach blow a few digits off, but it may have been a close second. Unfortunately, there were really only a couple gigs worth doing. The summertime thermocline moved in and cools most everything down.

Although the thermocline shut the door on some things, it opened other doors for some pretty fine fishing. Like many times the cold water comes in, the amberjack moved in on the inshore wrecks. Some of the wrecks with the taller relief were loaded with AJs of all different sizes. With the jacks, there were a few cobia,

barracuda and Mangrove Snapper. This held for the first portion of the month and tapered off the later as we continued through July.

This anomaly could extend into August as long as the cold water stays around. If the AJs are there, they will likely be hanging high in the water column where there is

warmer water than the chilly stuff on the bottom. If they’re there, both live bait and jigs will work, but the bigger fish will likely come on larger live baits. Keep your eyes open for a cobia too.

Much like years past, the cold water also pushed the bait, rays and cobia up on the Hetzel Shoal. This year, there were a bunch of kings, bonito and barracuda there too. Many a day were spent slow trolling live bait on the shoal catching kings and cobia. This tapered off a little bit later in the month when the water got a bit dirty.

Hopefully, the water will clean back up and it’ll be game on again. If conditions get right again, expect to see a mix of kings, cobia, bonito, barracuda and sharks. The sardines have been loaded on the shoal, so you can catch them there and start trolling. Some of the time, you can actually catch bait while you’re trolling. Keep the jig rod handy as the cobia are likely to swim right up to the boat.

The bottom fishing will remain dead until the cold water leaves. The only option here would be finding the jacks and mangroves hanging somewhere above the cold water.

Whatever the case, get out there and get after ‘em. I’ve got to go now and finish painting the rebel flag on the roof of my boat.

See ya on the pond!!

This is one of my favorite times of the year to use a topwater lure that imitates an injured mullet swimming on the surface. It doesn’t get any better catching redfish on topwater lures. Concentrate on throwing your favorite lure into the schools of mullet on the flats as this is where you will mainly get your strikes. If you are not a lure fan there is plenty of lady fish in the lagoons, just look for the birds working in the middle of the lagoon.

Tarpon is my next agenda.

If you’re looking for tarpon in the river, maybe focus on looking for them in small creek canals and marinas. White jerk baits and live pogies will do the trick. The tarpon are also still here on the shores of Cocoa Beach, fish around the bait pods with live mullet or pogies. Remember to hold on tight with these fish, they’re ranging from 50-180lbs.

You can also find redfish and snook around these bait pods on the beach. The snook bite in Stuart has been really good with fish in the mid- 20 pound range.

I ran quite a few of my charters last month in the ocean and caught a wide variety of species including flounder, cobia, kingfish, dolphin, and goliath grouper. The bite was pretty decent. The bait of choice for flounder would be small finger mullet. You can cast net these little mullet in the lagoon and if you have some way to keep them

alive overnight then you’re set. The cobia on the other hand have been chewing the live pogies really well, just work your bait on pieces of structure offshore. The kingfish and dolphin have been on the reefs just off of Port Canaveral. Look for water temps in the 80’s and if you start seeing flying fish start trolling for the dolphin. Rigged ballyhoo and live pogies will work excellent for these dolphin. I’ve been catching some monster goliath grouper on handline using whatever I can catch for bait. Some of these groupers are over 300 pounds!

You can’t eat them because they are federally protected but they are a lot of fun if you are able to pull one up off the wrecks.

Patrick AFB Delta IV Rocket Launch at Cape Canaveral a Success by 45th Space Wing Public Affairs

The Delta IV rocket launched into its 30th flight on July 23 at 8:07p.m. from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Built by United Launch Alliance, the Delta IV was carrying the seventh Wideband Global Satcom (WGS) satellite. The WGS is a military satellite provides communication services for warfighter, and is the only system that can support both X and Ka band communications. The services provided are integral for Combatant Commanders to command their tactical forces.

The launch was the fifth time using the Medium+ configuration (five meter fairing, with four solid rocket motors) for the Delta IV. The previous four times the Medium+

configuration was used were also for WGS missions.

The Commander of the 45th Space Wing, Col. Shawn Fairhurst, said the mission team did outstanding, and that everyone involved deserved to be commended.

The Delta IV rocket launch came only days after the the successful launch of Atlas V on July 15. The next launch will be Atlas V, mission MUOS-4 on August 31, 2015.

You are a well-known tattoo artist. Do you ever integrate your art with music? If so, how?

DJ Longneck About 10 years ago I met my favorite DJ to date, Lance-O. I had what I thought was a decent reggae collection at the time and we DJ’d an anniversary party for Surf World Surf Shop. I watched and learned from him and saw what it was to be a true reggae DJ, lots of mic control and fast song selections that ride on the same riddim (rhythm). There are other local DJs like J. Boogie and Nick Michael who keep me very inspired with their progressive DJ skills. I think the number one local on the rise is Cerino. He is really an all in one package, his father was a DJ so it’s in his blood and he produces his own tracks.

What type of equipment do you use to DJ? CDJ’s, turntables, Traktor, Serato, etc.?

Do you ever play vinyl and if so tell me about your vinyl collection?

I have really gone full circle with DJing. I originally fell in love with vinyl and turntables, then I progressed to a Numark all- in- one double CD player and mixer. Next I upgraded to Pioneer CDJ’s, got Serato, then Traktor and a controller.

I have had turntables on and off the whole time. I just recently got new Reloop turntables as I have never stopped record collecting. I gave my record collection away once to a record store when I thought I needed to downsize, I have always regretted that move. But I guess I paid it forward. My prime focus now is to spin roots and culture reggae 45s. Most old 45s come

The tropical vibe of the music transcends with the “tropistyle” artwork I am known for. The music and my art go hand and hand and are part of the whole experience of getting a tattoo.

There seems to be a group of reggae style DJs in Florida and the Caribbean. Can we find out more about these guys who’s cool interesting up-and-coming and what this movement is like?

Most of the DJs that I run with have their own DJ crews they run with all over Florida.

Names to keep a look out for are Lance-O and all the Kulcha Shok DJ’s, Badda Skat, Franky Sly, Ragga, 74 Soundsystem, Ragga P, Jimmy South, Selector Red-I, Soufside RudeBoys, Righteous HiFi, J-Punky, C-Lioness and all the Reggae DJ’s at Jamaikin Me Crazy.

“Basically you pay to enter and we send you data via email on how to participate and you provide confirmation that you ran 13 miles within a certain time frame,” he explains. “You can run on the beach with a friend or group to run a simulated run.”

Virtual running is appealing to a lot of runners who for whatever reason can’t race at a specific location or time. Varnes said he’s even come across military members on ships participating in races while on treadmills in the middle of the ocean.

Mitch has produced and participated in so many endurance events, but one stands out for Varnes. “They are all fun, but the Rocketman Florida Triathlon is very memorable as it is the first public sporting event ever allowed on the Kennedy Space Center.”

Many people are nervous to run their first 5k, 10k or Marathon. In my briefings before the Cocoa Beach Triathlon— which always has a lot of first timers—I always remind them to relax and remember to have fun. Whether it is a running or triathlon event, these entrants have trained for a long time, and their families have supported them through the process. We want to make their experience as fun and memorable as possible.”

Fight Club is a great program to lose weight, get fit, and stay healthy.

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced since you opened?

Overcoming injuries, sore muscles, and flat out exhaustion are all challenges, but the biggest is definitely the ‘business’ aspect of running the organization. It’s a lot of effort to keep track of the daily administrative responsibilities such as accounting, membership drives, transporting students, and basically everything that keeps the place up and running! I greatly appreciate Natalie for handling 95% of these duties. Without her I would be a lost soul. Training clients is easy for me as it is my passion, but running a business is work!

What do you think you’ve achieved since you started?

What do you like to do in your spare time?

One huge accomplishment is within the last year we became affiliated with Sensei Marcelo Cohen, first degree black belt under Marcelo Saporito and the Carlson Gracie family. I am honored and privileged to have the opportunity to learn and train under his leadership.

In the bigger picture, CBFC has helped me achieve so much.

I lived a tough life in the early to mid 90’s. I ran around with the wrong crowd and led a life of crime. At one point I was wrongfully charged with a serious crime where I was facing 30 years in prison with a 20 year plea offer. Fortunately for me the charges were dropped.

It was around this time that I knew I needed to change my life and I did. Martial arts was my savior and is now my life.

The CBFC is my and my family’s passion and commitment.

God truly gave me a second chance and I’m making the most of it. I love my life. I have a beautiful wife who loves and cares for me. And of course we have our daughter, Mynina. I am truly blessed.

When we are at home it’s all about relaxation. We rent a movie for Saturday family night, and Sunday is all about church and recovery. We attend Cross Ridge Church of Rockledge, led by Pastor Brad.

After church we relax a little, eat a good meal and then I go fishing. Whenever I have the opportunity, I like to watch Dr. Phil to learn more about how to help others through giving good advice and sharing life experiences.

The CBFC is a business that is dedicated to helping people use martial arts techniques to bring out the best in themselves. As Trey says, “We are a family at the fight club. Many people have come and gone throughout the years, but no matter why someone must leave, they carry the lessons they learned here with them forever.”

seen the entire plot along with all the best parts. Talented actors Michael Keaton, Jon Hamm and Sandra Bullock seem to enjoy doing the voices for their silly, over the top characters. Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jai Courtney, Emilia Clarke Kyle Reese (Courtney) is sent back in time to 1984 to save Sarah Connor (Clarke). He’s not only greeted by a different timeline: Sarah is not the scared victim he heard about but is a strong and prepared individual. She’s also joined by a protective Terminator (Schwarzenegger). The nostalgia for the 1984 setting from Terminator is satisfyingly rich yet only temporary. Once they exit the 80s setting, the movie goes downhill and becomes messy. It goes from being a (well crafted) tribute to James Cameron’s beloved story to an entirely new plot using mediocre filmmaking. Clarke does a fine job filling Linda Hamilton’s shoes as Connor. It’s great

to see Arnold back in the role he was born for, this time as a father figure and comic relief.

Any importance and charisma established by Michael Biehn in the first Terminator is non-existent in Courtney. Reese goes from being the protector to just a tag along.

If Hollywood has taught us anything, it’s by the time a franchise reaches a fifth installment (Dirty Harry, Die Hard, Death Wish,) it’s probably time to move on. Unless you’re a diehard Terminator fan, you’re better off saying, “Hasta la vista” to this time-traveling travesty. Grade: C

Stars: Michael Keaton, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm The lovable sidekicks from “Despicable Me” star in their

own movie exploring their origins and yearning to serve a master. Three of their own, Kevin, Stuart and Bob, set out to find a new master and they meet Scarlet Overkill (Bullock), who gives them temporary employment. Just like the “Cars” and “Madagascar” films, “Minions” takes side characters of a successful franchise and decides to exploit it. What’s next- a Willy Wonka spin-off starring the Oompa Loompas?

They should’ve stuck with mini movies instead. After a while, the gibberish dialogue and slapstick humor becomes tiresome and doesn’t translate well for a 90-minute feature. If you’ve seen the trailer to this movie, then you’ve

Ted (MacFarlane) and his wife decide they want to have children but the government does not see Ted as a person. With the help of his best friend (Wahlberg), he must fight for his civil rights. The semi-serious plot and the multiple courtroom scenes drag on a bit, prolonging the film’s length. Thankfully, the jokes surrounding those parts make up for them. Like MacFarlane’s television series “Family Guy,” “Ted” contains all the random, rude and out of left field type of humor you’d expect. They decide to throw in as many sex, drug and offensive jokes an R-rating will allow. Wahlberg shows that he and MacFarlane still have great chemistry and is also able to display

his brilliant comedic timing.

Just about anyone that has ever lent their voice to the “Family Guy” series also has a cameo in “Ted.” Some celebrity appearances seem like missed opportunities while most enjoy making fun of themselves, providing some hilarious and unforgettable moments.

The laughs are bigger, bolder and more outrageous as Ted and John reunite in one of those rare, “better than the original” sequels.
