Benedictine Baseball Missing Out On Usual Postseason Run Due To Coronavirus Pandemic

By Dennis Knight The second weekend in May is approaching – a time when Benedictine baseball coach Kevin Farmer and his team are usually in the midst of pressure-packed playoff games with their season on the line.

But the coronavirus pandemic cut the Cadet postseason push short. BC was off to its usual excellent start – going against top-notch competition before settling into region play the Cadets were 11-5 with a 6-0 mark in Region 3-3A play before play came to a halt.

“I think we were ready for another good run in the playoffs,” said standout junior Carter Holton, who committed to Vanderbilt before his sophomore season. “We had some good arms and a real good lineup.”

Holton was the Savannah Morning News player of the year as a freshman, when the Cadets won the Class 2A state title, and as a sophomore.

The left hander was off to another stellar season on the mound and at the plate. He was 2-2 with a 1.66 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 21 innings pitched. He was hitting .400 with an OPS of 1.053, with 13 runs and six RBIs. As a sophomore, he was reaching 89 mph on the radar gun, but this fall his top fastball was touching 94.

“I’ve been working out a lot and getting stronger,” said Holton, who is 5-11 and 175 pounds. “So I’m throwing harder. This year I was starting to throw my changeup a lot better too.”

Holton had a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Oconee County on Feb. 28 in an amazing performance as he struck out 17 batters and walked just two.

The Cadets graduate five seniors in Austin Tse, a standout pitcher who has signed with Erskine College, Connor Daily, Joseph Schwalbe, Clayton Greene and Rome Dean, the star infielder who has signed with Savannah State.

Tse was 1-0 with a 3.89 ERA in nine innings and Greene was 1-0 with a 1.53 ERA in 18 1/3 innings. Dean was hitting .325 with a .429 OBP, 11 runs and eight RBIs. Dean and his teammates can’t help but

wonder what might have been if the season had played out, but they are trying to keep things in perspective.

“In the short time we had together this year, we developed a really strong bond,” Dean said.

“We had a lot of talent and could have made a deep playoff run.”

Dean was an All-Savannah Morning News first-team pick as a shortstop last year and was playing second and third base this season. He said playing at BC has prepared him well for the next level.

“Coach Farmer has really high standards – we do everything the right way,” Dean said. “This year I developed as a leader, and I’m going to be ready to play at Savannah State.”

Sophomore Justin Thomas, a standout center fielder who was an All-Savannah Morning News first-team pick last season, was having another great year with a .532 OBP and .999 OPS. He had 12 runs, nine stolen bases and 10 RBI. His classmate Kam Edge, another firstteamer as a freshman at second base, had made the move to shortstop, where he was playing well.

Catcher/outfielder Cody Cowan was swinging a hot bat with five doubles and a pair of triples while hitting .400 with a .578 OBP and a 1.278 OPS and 13 RBIs. Will Walker had 10 RBI and Trent Warren had 12 RBI while hitting .368. Trent Markiton was hitting .400.

BC showed its potential playing in The Perfect Game High School Showdown in Hoover, Alabama March 5-7 in a tournament that included eight teams ranked in the top 50 nationally.

The Cadets lost the opener 10-0 to Bob Jones as Alabama commit Dylan Ray threw a complete game gem. Thomas and Schwalbe pitched well in a 4-1 loss to Denham Springs in the second game.

The Cadets turned things around in the third game as Greene gave up just one earned run in six innings. The Cadets rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh behind the strong at bats of Walker, Thomas, Brooks Glover, Edge

into seasoned leaders. Dean was a consistent force as always, Farmer said.

“Our senior class was leading by example and we had great team chemistry with the older guys and younger players,” Farmer said. “I know the boys were disappointed -- we all were. It was hard to have it shut down when we were just starting to play our best baseball. It was tough to explain to them at the moment, but everyone realizes that what happened was bigger than baseball.

“Our motto this year was ‘I got your 6’ (a military saying that means ‘I got your back’), and our players displayed that during the season and the quarantine by showing support to one another.”

Farmer is now focused on helping his seniors make the transition as they graduate while looking forward to next spring when the Cadets will be looking toward another successful campaign.

BC won the final game of the tourney behind a strong outing from Tse, as Holton had four hits in a 9-2 win over Smiths Station of Alabama, ranked No. 44 in the nation.

Earlier in the year, BC played in another topnotch tournament in Atlanta and faced pitchers committed to Auburn and South Carolina.

“We ran them through the gauntlet early in the season on the road against some Division I arms,” said Farmer, a BC alum who led the Cadets to state crowns in 2014 and 2018. “Some of the squads we faced seamed like college level teams. But we were finding our groove and started turning the corner right when the season ended.”

Farmer praised the senior class saying Daily and Schwalbe were making key contributions on the mound, while Tse and Greene had matured
