GAME PREVIEW:

Benedictine fell behind early in its secondround matchup with Cairo. Down 17-3, LeShon Brooks scored from 5 yards out for the first BC touchdown before Bryce Pashke intercepted a pass from his defensive line position and returned in 15 yards to tie the game. BC led, 24-23, at halftime and outscored the Syrupmakers, 21-0, in the second half. Holden Geriner was 16-of26 passing for 269 yards and three TDs. Duke-bound senior Trent Broadnax hauled in six passes, including scores of 80 and 11 yards. Justin Thomas was dynamic with a receiving TD, 87 yards rushing, and a firsthalf interception which set up a score. The offensive line was efficient in the run game and creating time for Geriner. After giving up 23 first-half points, BC’s defense pitched a shutout in the second half. Holden Sapp

Coordinator, Linebackers Carey Harriott ’76: Director of Equipment Transport Susan Dress Johnson: Director of Football Operations

led the effort with 11 tackles and a sack.

Riverdale, in the state quarterfinals for the first time since 1998, is red hot with six straight wins and an average margin of victory of 42 points. The Raiders’ offense is led by quarterback Avaun Rucker. The senior is a great athlete who is more than capable of doing damage as a runner but has put up huge numbers as a passer. Last week in the win over Northwest Whitfield, he ran for two scores and threw two TD passes. Senior Derwin Burgess is one of the best two-way players in the state. The South Carolina commit leads the team in receiving and interceptions. Running back Malik Harris leads the ground game and Frederick Collins III (2 TDs last week) gives Rucker another weapon on the perimeter. The Raiders’ defense did not give up a point in region play and finished the regular season with four straight shutouts. Friday night’s winner will host the semifinals against the winner of Carver/Jefferson.
