HEADMASTER
Dear Friends of BC,
E
nough cannot be said for the commitment that Coach Britt, his assistants, and the players have shown to date this season. None of us have seen before the challenges that the COVID – 19 virus has placed on everyone and, amid this deluge of decisions, Coach Britt has fashioned a team that the BC Community can take much pride in. Obstacles have been overcome, and the challenges have been many. Our hats are off to this team for the discipline, high morale and focus they have displayed.
So much credit belongs to our seniors for the leadership they have displayed in maintaining a team that has persevered through unprecedented challenges. In times past, a senior class could rest assured of its final memorable season. This year, the team can only hope that their expectations of such a season will be realized. Each week has brought its own unique questions, and the team’s leadership, coaches and players have faced them bravely and candidly. Thank you for your support this season. Forward always forward. Sincerely,
Fr. Frank Ziemkiewiz, O.S.B. Headmaster

PRINCIPAL
Dear BC Family,
W
elcome back to BC Football! My how time flies, and it sure has been a roller coaster ride. In the face of all this uncertainty, our coaches and young men have continued in the face of adversity by devoting so much time and effort toward playing football this fall. Athletics adds so much to our cadets’ experience at Benedictine, and our offerings serve as a constant light for the entire Benedictine Military School community. Our football team may only represent one of many extracurricular activities offered; however, it represents everything that we hold dear as an institution: team over self, hard work, discipline, dedication in the face of all odds, leadership, resilience, and mental toughness. Please join me in celebrating our football program, which is the best in our greater area. This is only possible thanks to your support, the passion of our coaches, and the studentathletes who dedicate themselves to perform at the highest levels. We thank you for your continued support of Benedictine Military School. God bless you all and our beloved institution.
Sincerely,
Jacob Horne Principal

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Dear BC Football Fans,
L
ike you, I am beyond excited to see our Cadets on the field this season. Through all the challenges and adversity over the past few months, our players, coaches, and staff have continued to work as hard as ever, while taking every precaution necessary.
The pride and tradition which is ever present with Benedictine are unmatched on the high school level. The same can be said for our football program. From the legendary Thanksgiving Day games at Grayson Stadium to the State Championship victories at the Georgia Dome, the BC spirit has never faded. I look forward to that unwavering support from the BC faithful again in 2020. As we move up in classification to AAAA and take on the most challenging schedule in the area, I have no doubt our Cadets will represent our school, alumni, and community in such a fashion that everyone who wears maroon will be proud. Thank you so much for your support of our young men and Benedictine, and I look forward to another great chapter of BC Football! Hut 2! Hut 2!

a tribute to
Coach James Robert Walsh, Sr.
Coach Walsh was born in Philadelphia, PA, where he attended Northeast Catholic High School and was a standout football player. He received a football scholarship to Auburn University, where he received a BA in Education. Coach Walsh played fullback for Auburn rushing for 831 yards (5.2 yards per carry) and two touchdowns during his college career. In 1960, Coach Walsh married the love of his life the former Barbara Ann Leonard of Columbus, GA. Coach Walsh retired as one of the winningest football coaches in the state of Georgia with a record 234-113-6 for a winning percentage .671 over his 35 year career. He began his coaching career at St. AnnePacelli Catholic School in Columbus, GA where he served as the first head football coach of their new program. Coach Walsh coached there for 10 seasons with a record of 49-35-5 winning 61 percent of his games as he built the Pacelli football program. Coach Walsh took over the helm of the Benedictine football program in 1970 and served as the head football coach and athletic director for 25 years until 1994. Coach Walsh continued
23
serving as the athletic director until 2008. During his tenure as head football coach, he lead the Cadets to a record of 185 wins (still a BC record), 82 losses, and 1 tie for a .692 winning percentage while playing in the highest classification in the Georgia High School Association. Known for his wishbone offense that pounded opponents and a tough, hardnosed defense, he led the Cadets to four Region Championships in 1977, 1978, 1979, and 1983. During his tenure, the Cadets won 10 city titles. He also lead the Cadets to two undefeated seasons and was coach of the year six times. His BC teams also reached the state playoffs 12 different times. He had a record of 16-9-1 against our arch rival Savannah High School is the state’s oldest rivalry. Coach Walsh’s career win/loss records against other notable football program include Beach (19-6), Brunswick (17-4), Buford (2-0), Glynn Academy (7-1), Groves (17-8), Jenkins (23-2), Johnson (4-3), McEachern (2-0), Mount De Sales (4-1), Northside Warner Robins (2-0), Statesboro (137), and Windsor Forest (19-4). Coach Walsh was inducted into the Greater Savannah Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. The Savannah Sports Council honored him in 2004 with the John F. Hodges OASIS Award, which stands for Outstanding Achievement in Sports In Savannah. More importantly, Coach Walsh was a mentor and father figure to thousands of Cadets during his four decades of service to Benedictine. His tough love approach in Benedictine’s Catholic, all-male environment was a perfect fit as he helped develop young boys into men. His players were drawn to him and they wanted to play hard for Coach Walsh. Discipline, hard work, and attention to detail were hallmarks of his teaching style that still carry on today through his former players. Coach Walsh is survived by his wife and six children, Jim Walsh, Jr. ‘80 (Rebecca) of Cumming, Margie All (Sigbert) of Townsend, Patrick Walsh ‘81 (Beth) of Richmond Hill, Billy Walsh of Savannah, Lenny Walsh of Savannah, and Wendy Stewart (Brandon) of Savannah. He is also survived by his grandchildren Ashley Nunnally, Sigbert "Shay" H. All ’06 , IV, James "Jake" R. Walsh, III, Erin Elizabeth Gregos, Bragan Walsh, Bailey Walsh, Brad Stewart ‘15, Casey Walsh, Sarah Stewart, Gavin Stewart ‘20, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

GAME PREVIEW: Benedictine advanced to the second round of the GHSA Class 4A playoffs with a thrilling, back-and-forth victory over Troup County. This is the ninth consecutive season that BC has won a first-round playoff game. Justin Thomas once again had a big night, scoring both rushing and receiving. He ended the night with four touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Sophomore Za’Quan Bryan hauled in a career-high 10 passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. Holden Geriner ended the night with 302 yards passing while connecting with seven different receivers. The defense gave up four touchdowns in the first half before bouncing back in a big way and surrendering only one score in the second half. Nick Dillon was key in the victory going a perfect 4-for4 on extra points and connecting on field goals from 24 and 29 yards. This week will mark only the second time the Cadets have played Cairo, with BC falling, 42-0, on the road in the 2007 playoffs. Cairo, one of the winningest programs in the history of Georgia football, is one of the hottest teams in the state. The Syrupmakers have won five consecutive games and are coming off a 37-0 win over West Laurens. Tay Solomon leads a rushing attack that gained over 360 yards last week. Solomon is a two-time, first-team all-region selection. Cairo has a number of weapons on offense, including quarterback Kevin Speed. The defense is fast and physical at all three levels and bases out of a 4-3. Junior linebacker Gary Davis is a force in the middle and racked up 114 stops a year ago. Noah Jones impacts the game tremendously as both a kicker and punter. The senior is committed to Georgia and one service has him ranked as the top punter in the country. The winner will play Riverdale or Northwest Whitfield.
